- RéalisateurGeorge A. RomeroVedettesJan WhiteRaymond LaineAnn MufflyUne femme au foyer de banlieue malheureuse qui s'ennuie se retrouve mêlée à la sorcellerie et au meurtre."The Witch is a Hungry Wife! Her day will come"....
Writer/Director George A. Romero's "Season of the Witch", aka "Hungry Wives", stars Jan White, (as Joan Mitchell), a disaffected housewife, whose husband, Jack, (Bill Thunhurst), treats her and his daughter, Nikki, (Joedda McClain), badly. He puts his wife down; he is disconnected; he is abusive; he is...a man who can't control his violent outbursts.
****
Joan, in the meantime, attends a ladies' dinner. Shirley Randolph, (Ann Muffly); Sylvia, (Esther Lapidus); Grace, (Shirlee Strasser); Gloria, (Jean Wechsler); Mary, (Charlotte Carter); and Patty, (Linda Creagan)-are witches. When they hear that Jane is wanting to be a Witch, (after she is having strange dreams and visions), (including being assaulted by an Intruder, (S. William Hinzman), (as Bill Hinzeman), in the scariest scene....Jan reads books on Wicca and Witchcraft from a bookstore; she then indulges in Wicca magick, as she gets more and more heavily involved, she notices her face, hair, and body changing, as she IS A WITCH!
Romero's "Lost movie" is finally on DVD, (complete and uncut). Due to its very low budget, sound and images are affected. BUT, despite this, the addition of Scottish folk singer-songwriter Donovan's "Season of the Witch", (1966), an hour so so in, adds to the horror, in a psychedelic way. With the birth of feminism, post Woodstock, the movie is an excellent horror movie about magick, sex, and searching for a new way to live...that jolts you, until the end!
Complete and uncut from Amazon.com. The Donovan song "Season of the Witch" can be heard if you can get "The Essential Donovan" CD, along with "Hurdy Gurdy Man", (used in the end of David Fincher's 2007 true crime movie "Zodiac", and "Mellow Yellow", among other songs!). - RéalisateurBryan ForbesVedettesKatharine RossPaula PrentissPeter MastersonJoanna Eberhart est venue s'installer dans la petite ville pittoresque de Stepford, dans le Connecticut, avec sa famille, mais elle découvre bientôt qu'une vérité sinistre se cache dans le comportement trop parfait des habitantes."Perfect Wives must do all the work"
Based on the novella by Ira Levin, director Brian Forbes and screenwriter William Goldman, deals not with Witches who are wives; but wives who are quote, "Controlled", unquote by The Men's Association, a group lead by Claude Axhelm, (George Coe)....Joanna Eberhardt, (Katherine Ross), is convinced by her husband, Walter, (Peter Masterston), to move to Stepford, Conneticut...Why the move? Well, Walter wants to control his wife, and be part of the Men's Association....where the women are robots, and do all the housework; cleaning, washing, all the quote, "Women's work", unquote that was done in the 1950's...two decades before.
****
Joanna's best friend, Bobbie Markowe, (Paula Prentiss), knows what's going on...but is scared. Her husband is a member. As other women: Carol Van Sant, (Nanette Newman); Charmaine Wimpiris, (Tina Louise)-whose husband, Ed, (Franklin Cover)-is also a member; Kit Sunderson, (Carole Mallory); and Mary Ann Stravros, (Barbara Rucker), all go about their duties-their black, Zombie eyes staring into nothingness; their robotic movements stilted...as Joanna tries to escape....
****
But Dr. Fancher, (Carol Eve Rossen), (as Carol Rossen), (who's working with Ike Mazzard), (William Prince), who's fellow members, Raymond Chandler, (Robert Fields); and Mr. Cornell, (Micheal Higgins), prevent her from leaving....But, when she finds out her husband is part of the group, she flees in horror....
****
And when Joanna finds Bobbie is now a "Stepford Wife", she is attacked and transformed into a robot...The movie ends with her in a supermarket, with black, blank vacant eyes....staring into nothing....
Ira Levin's satire on feminism, is one of the best horror movies of the early-to-mid 1970's.
Complete and uncut on DVD from Amazon.com. Forget the insipid 2004 re-make with Hollywood's worst actress Nicole Kidman. - RéalisateurAmando de OssorioVedettesTony KendallFernando SanchoEsperanza RoyIn this second startling film in the BLIND DEAD series, writer/director Amando de Ossorio returns to the horrific origin of the depraved Templar:El ataque de los muertos sin ojos (1973), "The Return of the Blind Dead", stars Tony Kendall, (as Jack Marlowe), a man who is holed up in a Cathedral, where, 500 years ago, Templar Knights roamed the Portugual Village, spreading terror...With some people escaping from the first movie, "Tombs of the Blind Dead", (1971), Jack is joined by a woman called Vivian, (Esperanza Roy); Lone Fleming, (as Amalia); Nancy, (Maria Nuria)-her daughter; Mayor Duncan, (Fernando Sancho); the Governor, (Juan Cazalilla); Governor's maid, (Betsabé Ruiz); Howard, (Frank Braña); Murdo, (José Canalejas); Monica, (Loreta Tovar); Juan, (José Thelman)-the boyfriend of Monica; Bert, (Ramón Lillo); Doncella, (Marisol Delgado); Francisco Sanz, (as Paco Sanz), (as The Station Manager), who all try and escape from the Executed Knight Templar, (Luis Barboo).
Writer/Director Amando de Ossorio, succeeds again. It is an excellent sequel, that is full of violence, sex, intrigue, and mystery.
It is complete and uncut on Blue Underground DVD from Amazon.com. David Menard.
After the success of "Dawn of the Dead", (George A. Romero, 1978), (who worked with Dario Argento on the Italian cut), Lucio Fulci decided to make his own Zombie epic. Entitled "Zombie 2"?, the movie stars Richard Johnson, ("The Haunting", (1963)); and "Beyond The Door", 1974), as Dr. David Menard, a man who heads to the Carribbean, where voodoo and magick happen, thanks to the locals. He has brought a Zombie from Matul Island, and plans to study it. But things go wrong, onto the way from New York....
****
Peter West, (Ian McCulloch), is a Journalist, who is with Anne Bowles, (Tisa Farrow),-Mia's sister!, his daughter...when they arrive at the Antilles, (another Island), where Brian Hull, (Al Cliver), an ethnologist...as well as his girlfriend Susan Barrett, (Auretta Gay), all meet up to do a scientific study....Afterwards, they make a misake going to Matul Island, (where they meet Dr. Menard, and his Nurse, (Stefania D'Amario)); and his wife, Paola Menard-(Olga Karlatos), who takes care of the Doctor, who's stricken by a, quote, "Tropical disease", unquote...that leads to him displaying Zombie-like behavior...As the Undead walks the Island: biting human flesh; eyes get violated; and carnage ensues, as they use flame throwers, (and other weapons), to kill the Zombies.
Fulci's movie was banned for years. But it is now complete and uncut on DVD, it is one of the best Zombie movies to end the 1970's, as he prepared for the overkill 1980's with "The Beyond", (1980); and "House by the Cemetery", (1981). - RéalisateurRichard FranklinVedettesSusan PenhaligonRobert HelpmannRod MullinarA young nurse who's just started working at a public clinic begins to suspect that a comatose young man may possess the powers of psychokinesis.Patrick, (Robert Thompson), is in a coma in a Mental Institution, run by the eminant Dr. Roget, (Sir Robert Helpmann). Patrick has psychic powers, like Carrie White, (Sissy Spacek), in "Carrie", (1976)...but he uses his power to kill people; Carrie kills only as revenge against her schoolmates, (that's another story)....
Kathy Jacquard, (Susan Penhaligon), treats Patrick. But, others get in the way of their, quote, "Relationship", unquote: Kathy's lover, (Paul Young); Matron Cassidy, (Julia Blake); Sister Williams, (Helen Hemingway); Nurse Panicale, (María Mercedes), (as Maria Mercedes); Day Desk Nurse, (Marilyn Rodgers); Night Desk Nurse, (Peggy Nichols), who try and stop Patrick's terror; and Captain Fraser, (Walter Pym); Patrick's Mother, (Carole-Ann Aylett), (who struggles to cope); a Barman, (John Murphy); and a S.E.C. Worker, (Ray Chubb), are also victims.
Can Detective Sgt. Grant, (Frank Wilson), take control of Patrick, before more people die?
Written by Everett De Roche, and directed by Richard Franklin, this Australian horror movie, (shot in Sydney), is a low budget gem. On DVD complete and uncut. - RéalisateurDaniel HallerVedettesSandra DeeDean StockwellEd BegleyWilbur Whateley travels to the Arkham Miskatonic University to borrow the legendary Necronomicon. But, little does anyone know, Whateley isn't quite human..."The Horror I saw befell me; befell me as I struggled to live to end the Horror"....
H P Lovecraft's imagination was so, that when he imagined horror creatures invading the spaces of man, and woman, his short stories and novellas, rang Roger Corman's doorbell in the 1960's, along with his adaptions of fellow horror scribe, Edgar Alan Poe. But, unlike Poe, and his grim poems, Lovecraft's work was harder. Stuart Gordon and Brian Yuzna did "Re-animator", (1985), and its sequels; and "From Beyond", (1986), stretching the 8 page short story....(but more on that later on in Best horror movies of the 1980's Part 3)....as I'm digressing....
****
Director Daniel Haller's "The Dunwich Horror", (1970), stars Dean Stockwell, (as Wilbur Whateley), who borrows The Necronomicon, "The Book of the Dead", which is situated at the Arkham Miskatonic University. But, before he can unleash Hell, Dr. Henry Armitage, (Ed Begley), horrified, tries to prevent him, (since he's owner of the University).
Soon everyone is affected: Nancy Wagner, (Sandra Dee), as a woman in danger; Lavinia Whateley-Wilbur's wife, (Joanne Moore Jordan), (as Joanna Moore Jordan); Dr. Cory, (Lloyd Bochner); Old Whateley, (Sam Jaffe), (who is eager for his son to get the evil book); Elizabeth Hamilton, (Donna Baccala); Talia Shire, (as Talia Coppola), (as Nurse Cora), (Talia changed her name from Coppola to Shire because like Nicholas Coppola changed to Cage, they wanted to make their own stardom, away from Francis and Eleanor Coppola); Beach Dickerson, (as Mr. Cole); Barboura Morris, (as Mrs. Cole); Michael Cole, (as Mike Fox), (as Dr. Raskin); Michael Haynes, (as a Guard); Toby Russ, (as a Librarian who knows where the evil book is); Jack Pierce, (as Reeger).
Can Sheriff Harrison, (Jason Wingreen), stop the horror as well?
Written by Curtis Hanson.
On DVD from Amazon.com complete and uncut.

Is it: Barker, (Brian Rawlinson); or: Steve Reding, (Norman Eshley), a gay man who had various lovers: Steve's lover #1, (Max Faulkner); Steve's lover #2, (Scott Fredericks); and Steve's lover #3, (Reg Harding), who was sick of having sex with men, and killed them all in a rage? But, if the killer was gay, why kill women?....

Or is it Jacko, (Paul Nicholas); or Frost, (Christopher Matthews)? And can Susan survive, and get out of the house?
Directed by Richard "Amityville III-d" Fleischer, "Blind Terror" is a early 1970's horror classic....On DVD from Amazon.com complete and uncut. But is expensive...Hopefully a cheaper copy will be released soon. - RéalisateurIrwin AllenVedettesMichael CaineKatharine RossRichard WidmarkUn énorme essaim d'abeilles africaines mortelles répand la terreur sur les villes américaines en tuant des milliers de personnes."The Bees of death"....
Ah, Irwin Allen. A man who produced "Poseidon Adventure", (1972); "The Towering Inferno", (1974), kicked himself in the foot with "The Swarm", (1978).
When South American bees attack Houston, Texas, Sir Michael Caine, (Brad Crane), and General Slater, (Richard Widmark), try and stop the threat, before a lot of people die. Doctor Hubbard, (Richard Chamberlain); Helena, (Katherine Ross); Maureen, (Olivia de Havilliand), (as Olivia De Havilland); Felix, (Ben Johnson); Ann McGregor, (Lee Grant); Dr. Andrews, (José Ferrer), (as Jose Ferrer); Rita, (Patty Duke), (as Patty Duke Astin); Jud Hawkins, (Slim Pickens); Fred "The Apartment", 1960 McMurray, (as Clarence); Paul Durant, (Christian Juttner); with Cameron "Blood and Black Lace", 1964; "The Toolbox Murders", 1978 Mitchell, (as General Thompson); and Henry "Rollercoaster", 1977 Fonda, (as Dr. Krim)-who has a solution to the menace, give support.
"The Swarm" has a lot of stars...but a lot of vapid dialogue.
But, in the end, that's why it's fun. The last great-good movie Irwin Allen made.
On DVD from Amazon.com. - RéalisateurRichard MarquandVedettesKatharine RossSam ElliottJohn StandingAn American couple in England stumble upon a rambling mansion where a number of powerful individuals have been summoned by its patriarch regarding the home's legacy."The Legacy will haunt you forever".

Directed by Richard Marquand, and written by the late Jimmy Sangster, "The Legacy", is an excellent Gothic horror movie, (at a time of slasher/giallo movies), that scares you.
Starring: Marianne Broome, (as Maria Gabrieli); William Abney, (as a Butler); Patsy Smart, (as a Cook); Mathias Kilroy, (as a Stable Lad); and Reg Harding, (as a Gardener).

Donald Cammell's 1977 sci-fi/horror classic, (based on the 1973 novel by Dean Koontz), stars Julie Christie, (as Susan Harris), whose husband, Alex Harris, (Fritz Weaver), is a scientist. Harris has invented Proteous IV, a machine that is capable of human thoughts and feelings. One day, Susan is alone in the house, when Proteus IV locks the house down and tells Susan that It wants a baby with her; Susan is horrified. Then she is raped by the machine; she is then left to her own devices afterwards....Rape movies in the 1970's like "Last house on the Left", (1972); "Straw Dogs", (1971); "A Clockwork Orange", (1971); and "I Spit on Your Grave", (1978), have been set in normal times; other times in a futuristic setting...."Demon Seed" is between "Clockwork"...and "Spit"...with mixes of "Straw...", thrown in....
In short, Susan's terror is complete.....

"And Now The Screaming Starts" is a wonderful horror movie. - RéalisateurPaul AnnettVedettesCalvin LockhartPeter CushingMarlene ClarkEight people are invited to an island estate for the weekend. One of them is a werewolf. Can you guess which one?"Who is the Beast?"
Director Paul Arnett's gimmicky 1974 horror movie, stars Calvin Lockhart, (as Tom Newcliffe), a black man, who has rich men and women, (six in all), to come to his private, Idyllic resort/Island, where high-security fences, and other security systems, are enforced? Why? Because, one of the six guests, is a Werewolf....So, The Beast Must Die....
****
Like the cheesy horror gimmicks of William Castle, we have an annoucement to let the audience know that there is a Werewolf, and a 30 second timeclock, near the end, to let us know, WHO IS THE WEREWOLF!
Is it: Dr. Christopher Lundgren, (Peter Cushing)-(Cushing is holding a rifle with a picture of the Beast on the DVD cover, but this is misleading, as Mr. Cushing doesn't hold any rifle in the whole movie!); Arthur Bennington, (Charles Gray)-who hides his own secrets; Pavel, (Anton Differing)-who is scared of dying at the hands of the Beast; Jan Jarmokowski, (Sir Michael Gambon), who keeps, quote, "disappearing", unquote, and raising the ire of Tom, who is a stickler for keeping his guests safe---while secretly wanting to know who the Werewolf is, and where it is, upsetting his wife, Caroline, (Marlene Clark)-who thinks her husband is insane in going about the Werewolf business in the first place; Davina Gilmore, (Ciaran Madden); and Paul Foote, (Tom Chadbon), who are all disturbed by Tom's rantings and ravings...Until the deaths happen, and, as the moon's rays hit the Island, THE BEAST IS LOOSE!
Do you know who The Beast is?
I did.
Get the Amicus DVD Collection: "Asylum", (1972); "And Now The Screaming Starts"; and "The Beast Must Die", (1974), to see this curious horror movie...all 3 movies are complete and uncut on Dark Sky Films DVD, from Amazon.com.
Highly recommended. - RéalisateurRoman PolanskiVedettesRoman PolanskiIsabelle AdjaniMelvyn DouglasUn bureaucrate loue un appartement à Paris où il plonge dans une dangereuse paranoïa."The paranoia is rife"....
After cutting Jack Nicholson's face with a knife in "Chinatown", (1974), a grand crime movie, Roman Polanski's "The Tenant", (1976), is a exercise in paranoia, mirroring his early horror movies like "Repulsion", (1965); and "Rosemary's Baby"....
****
Le locataire, "The Tenant", stars Polanski, (who writes with Gerard Brach), and directs, a horror movie, as Trelkovsky, a Bureaucrat, who rents a Paris apartment, where murder has occurred...The former tenant died under mysterious circumstances, and the Police haven't found the killer...Or explained who, and why, anyone would kill the other tenant... Trelkovsky, at first, meets the tenants: Stella, (a young Isabelle Adjani)-whom he forms a relationship; Shelley Winters, (as The Concierge); and Monsieur Zy, (Melvyn "The Changeling, 1979; Ghost Story, 1981, Douglas), tells him about the rules and codes of proper behavior.
****
Trelkovsky, notices that there isn't a bathroom. Why? Because the other tenant, Simone Choule, an Egyptologist, committed suicide...but was it suicide, or murder?
****
Madame Dioz, (Jo Van Fleet); Madame Gaderian, (as Lila Kedrova); Scope, (Bernard Fresson); Scope's neighbor, (Michel Blanc); a Neighbor, (Claude Pieplu); Rufus, (Georges Badar); Simon, (Romain Bouteille); a Cafe Owner, (Jacques Monod); Robert, (Patrice Alexsandre); a Office Worker, (as Josianne Balasko); and a Policeman, (Jean-Pierre Bagot), who investigates the death of Stella, (which prompts everyone to force Trelkovsky to commit suicide).
"The Tenant" is on DVD, and was the last movie Polanski made before the underage sex controversy in 1977, which caused his exile for the next 34 years...Even though he continued making movies. He couldn't accept the Best Director Academy Awards in 2002 for "The Pianist" because US Authorties would've arrested him! - RéalisateurDavid E. "Inspired by Serial Killer Charles Manson and George A. Romero's "Night of the Living Dead", (1968), writer/director David E. Durston's "I Drink your Blood", (1970), was the first horror movie rated "X". The new rating, was a clampdown on explicit horror, dramas, thriller movies, that had explicit sex and violence, (and language), that heralded in the 1970's.

Horace Bones, (as Bhaskar), leads a Satanic, hippy Cult, that attack and rape a girl, Mildred Nash, (Elizabeth Marner-Brooks); and her Grandfather, Doc Banner, (Richard Bowler); injecting him with LSD, then the Grandson, Roger Davis, (John Damon); tries to stop them...as the locals are infected by a rabid dog, (this was 11 years before Stephen King's "Cujo", was published), and they all become blood-drinking Zombies....
****
Brutal, violent, and extreme, "I Drink Your Blood", pushes the boundaries, a year before "Straw Dogs", (1971); and "A Clockwork Orange", (1971), and "Macbeth", (1971), were considered shocking, forty years ago....
Starring: Jadin Wong, (as Sue-Lin); Rhonda Fultz, (as Molly); George Patterson, (as Rollo); Riley Mills, (as Pete)...With Tyde Kierney, (as Andy); Iris Brooks, (as Sylvia); Alex Mann, (as Shelley); and Bruno Damon; and Mike Gentry.

Writer/Director Miguel Madrid's 1971 Spanish horror movie is not "TOTBD", (Tombs of the Blind Dead)...But, it is ultra cheesy....It''s not Jorg Buttgereit's "Nekromantik", (or its sequel)...
Bill Curran, (as Michael Sherrington), enters a Graveyard, where the dead come alive...Lady Anne, (Catherine Ellison), and Barbara, (Maria Paz Madrid-the director's wife), (as Yocasta Grey), are hiding the fact that a monter is on the loose...that defiles the dead, and eats the bodies...But whether this is a ghoul, or a necrophilic killer, like Ed Gein, is up in the air...
