- DirectorMarc WebbStarsZooey DeschanelJoseph Gordon-LevittGeoffrey ArendAfter being dumped by the girl he believes to be his soulmate, hopeless romantic Tom Hansen reflects on their relationship to try and figure out where things went wrong and how he can win her back.My favourite Romantic Comedy film ever. The scene with 'You Make My Dreams' in it is amazing. Worth the £9.
- DirectorAlejandro G. IñárrituStarsBrad PittCate BlanchettGael García BernalTragedy strikes a married couple on vacation in the Moroccan desert, which jump starts an interlocking story involving four different families.A film similar to Crash, by Paul Haggis, where four story are all connected with each other. This makes you laugh, cry and think about your world.
- DirectorNicolas Winding RefnStarsTom HardyKelly AdamsLuing AndrewsA young man who was sentenced to seven years in prison for robbing a post office ends up spending three decades in solitary confinement. During this time, his own personality is supplanted by his alter-ego, Charles Bronson.A very funny take on a menacing character. Loved this film mainly because of Tom Hardy super acting. This makes me very excited for his take on Bane in The Dark Knight Rises.
- DirectorAlex De RakoffStarsMark HeapMichael LernerMichael PeñaFollowing a bizarre series of events, Jimmy, a local amateur boxer, finds himself pitted in a match against the world champion.Fantastic British mock-umentary. Omid Djalili is super in this as Orlando Bloom's boxing manager. Best boxing movie ever - beating The Fighter, Rocky and Ali
- DirectorAlfonso CuarónStarsJulianne MooreClive OwenChiwetel EjioforIn 2027, in a chaotic world in which women have somehow become infertile, a former activist agrees to help transport a miraculously pregnant woman to a sanctuary at sea.Still haven't met anyone who has seen this brilliant film yet. It's dark, touching and scary all at the same time. The same director as the best Harry Potter film as well (Prisoner of Azkaban), Alfonso Cuarón.
- DirectorPhil JoanouStarsDwayne JohnsonXzibitL. Scott CaldwellTeenagers at a juvenile detention center, under the leadership of their counselor, gain self-esteem by playing football together.Loved this film. Has moments very similar to Remember The Titans (another great American Football film). The Rock, sorry Dwayne Johnson's performance is one of his best. Please Mr Johnson stop doing kid films and focus on more serious ones.
- DirectorDaniel BarberStarsMichael CaineEmily MortimerDavid BradleyAn elderly ex-serviceman and widower looks to avenge his best friend's murder by doling out his own form of justice.Michael Caine. Fighting Chavs. What more do you want from a film! Watch it now!!!
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsJeremy TheobaldAlex HawLucy RussellA young writer who follows strangers for material meets a thief who takes him under his wing.Christopher Nolan's first ever feature length film, is a masterpiece in storytelling - that helped him with success in the Batman films, Prestige and Inception. Told completely out of order, this is the type of film that you have to focus on.
- DirectorBrad BirdStarsEli MarienthalHarry Connick Jr.Jennifer AnistonA young boy befriends a giant robot from outer space that a paranoid government agent wants to destroy. This was one of my favourite films as a kid, with great themes - that still ring true nowadays. Brad Bird (M:I4 director) can do no wrong in my eyes - this film and Incredibles.
- DirectorMichael BayStarsScarlett JohanssonEwan McGregorDjimon HounsouIn 2019, a mercenary pursues a man and woman who escaped a research facility after learning their true fate.Half the budget went to marketing this film!!! Does anybody remember anything about the marketing campaigns? OK, Michael Bay is one of those directors who wants you to sit back and enjoy a film so this is a great film to watch on a Saturday night whilst eating a slice of pizza
- DirectorAndrew NiccolStarsNicolas CageEthan HawkeJared LetoAn arms dealer confronts the morality of his work as he is being chased by an INTERPOL Agent.OK I'm guessing most people have seen this film, as it's on the BBC every week but some still haven't. A ballsy, slick film that makes you adore Nicolas Cage again.
- DirectorJohn AugustStarsRyan ReynoldsHope DavisMelissa McCarthyA troubled actor, a television show runner, and an acclaimed videogame designer find their lives intertwining in mysterious and unsettling ways.If you want a film to make your brain explode trying to work out the story, then watch this.
- DirectorSusan StromanStarsNathan LaneMatthew BroderickUma ThurmanAfter putting together another Broadway flop, timid accountant Leo Bloom teams up with down-on-his-luck producer Max Bialystock in a get-rich-quick scheme to put on the world's worst show. The best musical I have ever seen. Normally can't stand anything with dancing and singing in but this has laugh out loud dialogue, brilliant songs and Will Ferrell playing a German.
- DirectorMike BinderStarsAdam SandlerDon CheadleJada Pinkett SmithA man who lost his family in the September 11 attack on New York City runs into his old college roommate. Rekindling the friendship is the one thing that appears able to help the man recover from his grief. One of only two films I have cried watching (the other being Click, don't judge). Adam Sandler plays a serious (yes, serious) character who loses his family in 9/11 and refuses to accept that. Breathtaking performances, lovely cinematography and a cracking soundtrack.
- DirectorsBibo BergeronDon PaulJeffrey KatzenbergStarsKevin KlineKenneth BranaghRosie PerezTwo swindlers get their hands on a map to the fabled city of gold, El Dorado. One of my favourite films growing up. Elton John soundtrack, a search for a city of gold leads to the main characters being seen as mighty gods.
- DirectorAkira KurosawaStarsToshirô MifuneTakashi ShimuraKeiko TsushimaFarmers from a village exploited by bandits hire a veteran samurai for protection, and he gathers six other samurai to join him.Widely regarded as the best film ever made - even though not many people have seen it. Thousands of films borrow action pieces, jokes and the storyline from this masterpiece.
- DirectorMarc ForsterStarsWill FerrellEmma ThompsonDustin HoffmanI.R.S. auditor Harold Crick suddenly finds his mundane Chicago life to be the subject of narration only he can hear: narration that begins to affect his entire existence, from his work to his love life to his death.Brought this film for my mum because she loves Emma Thompson but ended up watching it myself and found it fascinating. Great ideas, emotionally deep characters and Will Ferrell playing straight. Brilliant.
- DirectorGary ChapmanStarsEwan McGregorRicky GervaisTim CurryAt the height of World War II, a tiny wood pigeon enlists in the elite Royal Homing Pigeon Service to serve Britain, as the fearsome General Von Talon (Tim Curry) and his deadly squadron of falcons patrol the English Channel. Is he a war-hero in the making? Not many people went to the cinema to see this pigeon war film and I can understand why. There was no marketing for it. I got this for Christmas because I love Ricky Gervais and it's no where near an awesome film but it's alright. The jokes are very British and the action is thrilling.
- DirectorsJoel CoenEthan CoenStarsGeorge ClooneyJohn TurturroTim Blake NelsonIn the deep south during the 1930s, three escaped convicts search for hidden treasure while a relentless lawman pursues them.Saw this film in my US Cinema class and wrote a thesis on it about the Coen brothers being modern day autuers. This is very similar to a modern day road trip film where George Clooney (who I never really rated until watching this movie) has to get back to his wife - similar to Homer's Odyssey. A toe tapping movie that is awesome.
- DirectorsRicky GervaisStephen MerchantStarsChristian CookeFelicity JonesTom HughesA 1970s-set comedy centered on three young working class friends in a dreary suburb of Reading.Really annoyed that I missed this film in the cinema because it's a masterpiece. The story isnt the greatest but I loved everything Gervais and Merchant have done before. Though the jokes are great, the movie is more of an emotional journey and it's plays on your heart strings. Great film.
- DirectorChristopher MorrisStarsWill AdamsdaleRiz AhmedAdeel AkhtarFour incompetent British terrorists set out to train for and commit an act of terror.Maybe the smartest (and bravest) idea for a film ever. Four Lions is a comic look at terrorists in the UK, and, boy, is it a comic look. One of the funniest films of all time. Absolutely a dark/black comedy but it's well worth it.
- DirectorNiels Arden OplevStarsMichael NyqvistNoomi RapaceEwa FrölingInfluential industrialist Vanger's niece Harriet disappeared under mysterious circumstances 40 years ago. As a last attempt at solving the case, he hires investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist.I sure everyone has heard of this film but has never seen it (or is waiting for the Hollywood remake) but the original one from Sweden, is brilliant. 100% darker than I thought it was going to be but thats why I liked it. Watch this verision before going to the remake next year.
- DirectorTomas AlfredsonStarsKåre HedebrantLina LeanderssonPer RagnarA bullied boy forms a unique friendship with his new neighbor, who is a vampire.Again this film was Hollywood-isd last year with Let Me In. I watched this with subtitles on and the film didn't disappoint. A chilling story that makes you wary of the neighbour's little girl incase she is a vampire.
- DirectorJohn WooStarsBen AffleckAaron EckhartUma ThurmanA technical wizard learns that his memory has been erased. If you love Bourne films, you are going to think this is a rip off. But I'm not a the biggest fan of Jason Bourne and I loved this. John Woo directed this 'Memory Loss Action' film. Action set pieces are a bit boring, storyline isnt the greatest but I liked it.
