- DirectorDavid FincherStarsJesse EisenbergAndrew GarfieldJustin TimberlakeAs Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg creates the social networking site that would become known as Facebook, he is sued by the twins who claimed he stole their idea and by the co-founder who was later squeezed out of the business.Best Motion Picture - Drama
This category will presumably go either way, The King's Speech seems to be the better film, however, the current Awards Buzz is that American societies will go for David Fincher's latest. This may be a way of rewarding Fincher for Benjamin Button, but this could be the film that goes all the way.
Runner-Up: The King's Speech - DirectorLisa CholodenkoStarsAnnette BeningJulianne MooreMark RuffaloTwo children conceived by artificial insemination bring their biological father into their non-traditional family life.Best Motion Picture - Musical/Comedy
The Musical/Comedy category seems to be full of rather random picks. Alice is neither Musical or Comedy; Burlesque has been prone to some rather scathing reviews; Red is more action than comedy and The Tourist... Well The Tourist was what it was.
Lisa Cholodenko's somewhat personal, small film about family, values and the generational gap packs a great script, heartwarming and strong performances by Bening, Moore and Ruffalo and seems to be a true jumping point for younger leads Wasikowska and Hutcherson.
A definite synch!
Runner-Up: Burlesque - DirectorTom HooperStarsColin FirthGeoffrey RushHelena Bonham CarterThe story of King George VI, his unexpected ascension to the throne of the British Empire in 1936, and the speech therapist who helped the unsure monarch overcome his stammer.Best Actor - Drama - Colin Firth
There are many who say that Colin Firth was robbed last year, when he won the BAFTA, but not the GG or Oscar for A Single Man. This year, however, it could all turn around. I have yet to see this film, but from what I have seen, Firth seems to provide a strong and broad performance, in a film that makes you proud to be British. I would love for Helena Bonham Carter to win in her category as well, as I think it would be tremendous for both her and Firth to be the first on-screen monarchs to win GGs and Oscars for their work.
Runner-Up: James Franco - 127 Hours - DirectorRichard J. LewisStarsPaul GiamattiRosamund PikeJake HoffmanThe picaresque and touching story of the politically incorrect, fully lived life of the impulsive, irascible and fearlessly blunt Barney Panofsky.Best Actor - Musical/Comedy - Paul Giamatti
Despite being a devout fan of Johnny Depp's work, I don't fully feel as though he deserves to win for either of his performances in The Tourist or Alice In Wonderland. The rest of the nominees I am also undecided on. But with Barney's Version, Paul Giamatti seems to be back doing what he did best in films like Sideways, giving a simple, heartwarming performance that appeals to the common man.
Runner-Up: Johnny Depp - Alice In Wonderland - DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsNatalie PortmanMila KunisVincent CasselNina is a talented but unstable ballerina on the verge of stardom. Pushed to the breaking point by her artistic director and a seductive rival, Nina's grip on reality slips, plunging her into a waking nightmare.Best Actress - Drama - Natalie Portman
Miss Portman's career is probably the only one that has not been ruined by Star Wars, and with this film, she delivers on the promise of her previous work in Closer. As a woman whose sense of identity deteriorates as she prepares to play one of the greatest roles in ballet, Portman is truly unforgettable, which means that, come Oscar time, it will be a toss up between her and Miss Bening for the grand prize.
Runner-Up: Jennifer Lawrence - Winter's Bone - DirectorLisa CholodenkoStarsAnnette BeningJulianne MooreMark RuffaloTwo children conceived by artificial insemination bring their biological father into their non-traditional family life.Best Actress - Musical/Comedy - Annette Bening
This is the category that many think Annette Bening will waltz away with, and I will not be one to disagree!
Bening provides a warm funny and subtle performance that many have said will mean she wins in February, which is exactly what I foresee. This award will be a stepping stone to the Oscars and will prove Bening is indeed at the top of her game.
Runner-Up: Emma Stone - Easy A - DirectorDavid O. RussellStarsMark WahlbergChristian BaleAmy AdamsBased on the story of Micky Ward, a fledgling boxer who tries to escape the shadow of his more famous but troubled older boxing brother and get his own shot at greatness.Best Supporting Actor - Christian Bale
Bale has provided some of the kmost memorable performances of the 21st century and his somewhat maverick approach to film is what will most likely set him apart from the rest of the nominees. Andrew Garfield probably needs this as a way of marking his way into the Hollywood A-list, but Bale has been around longer and has had more time to develop as an actor.
Runner-Up: Andrew Garfield - The Social Network - DirectorDavid O. RussellStarsMark WahlbergChristian BaleAmy AdamsBased on the story of Micky Ward, a fledgling boxer who tries to escape the shadow of his more famous but troubled older boxing brother and get his own shot at greatness.Best Supporting Actress - Amy Adams
Amy Adams has been nominated before in this category for Doubt and she is by far one of the most versatile actresses working today. This award would not only acknowledge that versatility, but mark her out as one of the best actresses of her generation as well.
Much as I want the award to go to Helena Bonham Carter, I feel it will most likely be Adams that takes home the prize.
Runner-Up: Helena Bonham Carter - The King's Speech - DirectorChristopher NolanStarsLeonardo DiCaprioJoseph Gordon-LevittElliot PageA thief who steals corporate secrets through the use of dream-sharing technology is given the inverse task of planting an idea into the mind of a C.E.O., but his tragic past may doom the project and his team to disaster.Best Director - Christopher Nolan
With Inception, Christopher Nolan has re-invented the action film. The film truly proves that you don't need to sacrifice story, plot and emotion to make a thrilling and intelligent film. The concept itself is also wonderfully original and I truly hope that this is recognised by the Hollywood Foreign Press. - DirectorDavid FincherStarsJesse EisenbergAndrew GarfieldJustin TimberlakeAs Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg creates the social networking site that would become known as Facebook, he is sued by the twins who claimed he stole their idea and by the co-founder who was later squeezed out of the business.Best Screenplay - Aaron Sorkin
Sorkin's sharp and smart screenplay is fantastic. He has by far the best of the bunch, although he could be threatened by David Seidler (The King's Speech) or Lisa Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg (The Kids Are All Right).
Runner-Up: David Seidler - The King's Speech - DirectorTom HooperStarsColin FirthGeoffrey RushHelena Bonham CarterThe story of King George VI, his unexpected ascension to the throne of the British Empire in 1936, and the speech therapist who helped the unsure monarch overcome his stammer.Best Original Score - Alexandre Desplat
Desplat is a composer who has created some of the most beautiful and fascinating scores of recent years ( Girl With A Pearl Earring, The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button) and this year, with King's Speech and Harry Potter 7 to name but a few of his pieces, I feel that this could be the opportunity to reward him for his body of work.
My head says that Trent Reznor will win for The Social Network, but my heart says that Desplat will be the one to beat.
Runner-Up: Trent Reznor - The Social Network - DirectorMichael AptedStarsBen BarnesSkandar KeynesGeorgie HenleyLucy and Edmund Pevensie return to Narnia with their cousin Eustace where they meet up with Prince Caspian for a trip across the sea aboard the royal ship The Dawn Treader. Along the way they encounter dragons, dwarves, merfolk, and a band of lost warriors before reaching the edge of the world.Best Original Song - "There's A Place For Us"
Most people seem to think that either Burlesque or Tangled will be the one to beat in this category. Personally, I find this song to be truly emotive, heartwarming and genuinely thrilling, despite the fact it has been sung by BOTH Carrie Underwood and Joe McElderry. The Lyrics are true to the spirit of the film and it has a wonderful melody, therefore, this is the horse to bet on methinks!
Runner-Up: "I See The Light" - Tangled
