I know they got cancelled without much ado, but they did have 4 additional episodes to wrap the story up.
They did NOT stick the landing.
Don't get me wrong, it was a good episode. Loved the whole thing, right up until the end.
This did not feel like a satisfying end to the series. A season finale? Sure. But they left this thing so open ended, like they just lost the thread of what they were trying to do.
I had such high hopes for this show.
Please, don't misunderstand, the show was, and IS, great. I watched every episode with relish. Waited each week for the new episode to be available. Watched the calendar for the new seasons whenever they were announced.
If they could only have wrapped the story up correctly.
If they had a 5th season to work with, the ending here would be fine. It set up expectations for new episodes.
But there are no new episodes.
They should have wrapped it up with finality. Close the loop, finish the stories.
I could go on for days about Ben alone, and his exposure to the accelerator.
Meh. It was fine, but should have been better.

First, let's get the elephant in the room addressed: The title Dark Matter is NOT chosen to sound "edgy" or "cool". The title is literally the title of the novel Blake adapted into this series. Come on reviewers, at least do a LITTLE homework before crapping all over something as basic as the title of the series.
Second, as to the "slow pace" and "where's the science" whiners: THIS IS MOSTLY A SHOW ABOUT A HUSBAND/FATHER WANTING TO RETURN TO HIS FAMILY. It's as simple as that. The box, it's a McGuffin. It's there to drive the drama of the story. If you're expecting hard science, move along, nothing to see here.
What this is, is a damn fine, and faithful, adaptation of a really excellent novel, which I ate up in like 3 days, it was so good.
I read the Wayward Pines novels long before FOX turned it into a series, and frankly the novels were FAR superior. That's because Blake Crouch, while the author of the source material, had only a very small amount of input into the TV show. And don't get me wrong, I loved the TV show, but it couldn't hold a candle to the series of novels.
This show, being DIRECTLY influenced by the master himself, is every bit as good, as nuanced, as the novel it's derived from.
I started this hoping for a good show. Didn't expect I'd get a great show, and I'm happy for that.

What can I say, this final season started off with a giant bang, and I can't imagine they're going to drop the ball on this, the final season of this amazing show. They're setting up the endgame right out of the gate, all the pieces from the previous three seasons are falling into place, and the stakes are literally all life on earth, at least from the hints given to us on this first season 4 episode.
I can't wait to see the rest of this play out, but at the same time I'm dreading each new week's episode because each one is one episode closer to that sad, sad day of the finale.
I'm going to miss Kristen, David, Ben and the rest of this sublimely talented cast of people who keep us wondering each week.
Thanks to the cast of Evil for never letting us down.
