Ingmar Bergman Made One Horror Film & It's Terrifying
Image
In many ways, Hour of the Wolf (1968) is just like many other films directed by Ingmar Bergman, one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. It stars two of his most frequent collaborators, Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann (the latter of whom was Bergman's partner at the time); it was filmed on the Swedish island of Fårö, where Bergman lived for much of his life; and its script was heavily inspired by Bergman's own life and relationships.

Even so, Hour of the Wolf is a unique entry in Bergman's acclaimed oeuvre for one simple reason: it's a horror film. While many of Bergman's films dealt with dark themes and featured Gothic imagery and foreboding atmospheres, Hour of the Wolf remains Bergman's only attempt to truly frighten his audience on a visceral level, taking heavy inspiration from his own nightmares. But Bergman didn't dabble in the horror genre just for shock value.

‘My Fault London’ Movie Cast And Character Guide
Image
Directed by Dani Girdwood and Charlotte Fassler, Prime Video’s romantic thriller film, My Fault: London is the remake of the Spanish drama, Culpa Mía, which is based on the novel series. The idea of the romantic drama germinated as a Wattpad story. With complicated characters populating the tight plot, My Fault: London is expected to grab enough attention over 2025 Valentine’s week.

Asha Banks as Noah

Young, impulsive, and unpredictable—these three words accurately capture Noah’s energy in My Fault: London. Noah’s character is brought to life by the 21-year-old English actress, Asha Alice Banks. After a successful tryst with the English stage since her early childhood, Asha’s foray into films occurred with the German musical film The Magic Flute, directed by Florian Sigl. Banks is also a known face on television among the English audience, with her brief appearances in EastEnders and Call the Midwife.

My Fault: London ~ To Be Released February 13, 2025
“My Fault: London” is an Amazon Prime Video Original movie, based on a best-selling novel, that will be released on February 13, 2025.

“Everyone kept telling me that London would be a fresh start.”

From Florida to London – Climate Change, Culture Change, and Love

In “My Fault: London“, a woman, living in Florida, with her teenage daughter uproots her family and moves to London because she married a man who lives in London. For both mother and daughter, it’s supposed to be a “fresh start”. But especially for the daughter. Even though she’s only 18, apparently, her life already needs a reset. Sometimes, teens need to move to a new environment and start all over again. In Noah’s case, her new environment is an entirely different country and a brand new family. Her mom’s new husband also has a teenage son, Nick.

Noah asked someone about Nick and apparently,...

Flute Film Reverts To Flimmer As Company Name; Roland Emmerich & Marco Kreuzpaintner Join Advisory Board
Image
Exclusive: Germany’s Flute Film will operate as Flimmer going forwards, after Christopher Zwickler reacquired rights to the Flimmer brand. Roland Emmerich and Marco Kreuzpaintner, who co-founded Flimmer with Zwickler, have joined its advisory board.

Zwickler, who is Managing Director and producer at Berlin-based Flimmer, bought the rights back from France’s Webedia for an undisclosed fee. He had originally launched Flimmer as a marketing agency and film trailer maker with director Emmerich and Kreuzpaintner.

Flimmer will now unite film and TV production with the marketing and audience engagement operation under one roof. Independence Day director Emmerich and Kreuzpaintner, who recently co-directed Emmerich’s Sky and Peacock Roman Empire drama epic Those About to Die, are rejoining the fray.

Furthermore, Zwickler has hired as filmmaker Solmaz Sohrabi, who spent the past eight years collaborating with Gabriela Sperl, as a producer in the TV and film division. Charlotte Marie-Claire Kretschmer, who...

The Perfect Victim: “The Night Porter” at 50
Image
The Night Porter.Fascism is not only an event of yesterday.… It is with us still, here and elsewhere. As dreams do, my film brings back to the surface a repressed “history.”—Liliana CavaniThe aesthetics of fascism, and how they enable the perversion of cultural memory, are interrogated even as they are instrumentalized in The Night Porter (1974), a film that remains confounding and polarizing 50 years after its release. Its director, Liliana Cavani, knew that portraying the compulsive sexual charge between a young Holocaust survivor and her former Nazi tormentor was bound to turn stomachs. An Italian socialist, best known at the time for her four-hour television documentary, History of the Third Reich (1962–63), Cavani was well positioned to address the shifting modes of historical representation and the nuance-flattening power of the moving image, which can so readily be put in service of propaganda. During research for Women of the Resistance (1965), another television documentary,...

BFI London Review: The Brothers Quay Find Stunning Textures In Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass
Image
Timothy and Stephen Quay have developed an entirely unique style in the world of stop-motion animation: vigorously kinetic yet meticulously controlled; balletic in its interweaving of aural and visual rhythms; full of the sort of trivia and esoterica that fascinated Borges and Pessoa; and given to looped sequences of pure, sensual, cinematographic abstraction. Their latest production, Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass, which draws generously from Bruno Schulz’s novel of the same name, adds yet more stylistic oddities to the foregoing list, albeit in a more conventional, narrativized context.

The precise details of this context are hard to elaborate completely, but we can be sure of a few things. The protagonist is Jozef, a lithe, ruddy man who is visiting his father at a sanatorium in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. In the real world his father is dead; but at the sanatorium, where the clocks have...

Exclusive: Buckle up, the sequel to Prime Video’s 2023 hit romance movie Culpa Mía (My Fault) is coming down the road.

“There’re a lot of cars, just like the first one!” quipped Culpa Mía star Nicole Wallace when speaking with Deadline about her new movie, Culpa Tuya (Your Fault), at the Prime Video Presents Trailblazers event in London yesterday (October 1).

Culpa Mía is an adaptation of Argentinian author Mercedes Ron’s novel of the same name, which is part of the bestselling Culpables trilogy that became popular through Wattpad. There she meets Nick (Gabriel Guevara), her new stepbrother. They fall madly in love in secret.

Why Does Beetlejuice Have to Be Said Three Times?
Image
The following reveals spoilers for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, now playing in theaters.

Beetlejuice is one of Tim Burton's most beloved films and a staple of any Halloween fan's collection. The film came out of nowhere to become a surprise hit in 1988, and 2024's sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has proven just as popular. The 1988 supernatural comedy follows a young couple, Adam and Barbara Maitland, who are tragically killed in an accident. However, their time as ghosts becomes more eventful than their actual lives when a new family moves into their home.

Adam and Barbara try scaring them away but to no avail. They end up calling the bio-exorcist Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) for help, saying his name three times before he appears. The film never thoroughly explains why Beetlejuice must be summoned in this way, nor does the sequel. However, the lore behind the film goes on to clarify this is because Betelgeuse...

Producer Pierre-Olivier Bardet, Honored at Ji.hlava, Relishes Filmmakers Who Go Their Own Way
Image
Producer Pierre-Olivier Bardet has become a hero to filmmakers who rock the boat – feature and documentary revolutionaries who work in ways that he says are “completely unique,” as he puts it: Albert Serra, Frederick Wiseman, Wang Bing and Alexandr Sokurov.

And it’s hard to imagine anyone else who would have agreed to produce an English version of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute,” directed by Kenneth Branagh (after Francis Ford Coppola and several luminaries declined the project), set in World War I.

But for Bardet, the fascination of working with those who reject the usual conventions of filmmaking is what drives him – which is a key reason he was honored at this year’s Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival for his contribution to cinema by the Czech producers association.

Bardet’s new film with Serra, focused on the rituals of bullfighting in Spain, is likely to push boundaries still further,...

Actor-Director Kenneth Branagh’s Career In Front Of And Behind The Camera From ‘Henry V’ To ‘A Haunting in Venice’
Image
This generation of filmgoers mostly probably thinks of Irish actor-director Kenneth Branagh as Agatha Christie’s mustachioed detective Hercule Poirot in Murder on the Orient Express (2017), Death on the Nile (2022) and the upcoming A Haunting in Venice.

But there is so much more to Branagh’s career. As a director, he’s dabbled in multiple genres, including fantasy, action, science fiction, thriller, comedy and superhero.

Branaghs career as an actor has been equally as diverse. He’s acted in legal thrillers, Westerns, romantic thrillers, animation, fantasy pics and dramedies.

And then there’s Shakespeare. There’s always Shakespeare. Branagh has a self-professed love of the Bard. He’s acted in and directed...

‘The Magic Flute’ (2023) Ending Explained & Movie Summary: Did Tim Get To Be Prince Tamino?
Image
Love conquers all. But it’s not really that simple, is it? Love should be true and a conscious choice. The Magic Flute weaves this theme of love and friendship into the narrative and tries to recreate a magical universe the likes of which we have seen in movies like Harry Potter. There is a naive young protagonist, and he goes to a music school after his father dies. There, he meets his friends and enemies, but most importantly, he discovers the magic present in the world. Through a fairy tale, he learns what’s important in life and how to go about achieving greatness. The movie is a musical where characters sing in moments that overwhelm them. Based on the opera by Mozart himself, who is credited as one of the film’s writers as well, this is one of the most famous fairy tales ever, and the film...

The P. Craig Russell Library of Opera Adaptations, Vol. 2
Image
I love idiosyncrasy. Even if I’m not as into Idea X as a creator is, the fact that creator is so into it is appealing – I like to see the things creators are passionate about, the things they have to do, even if it doesn’t make commercial sense.

P. Craig Russell adapts operas into comics. He’s been doing it since nearly the beginning of his career, and I see from his bibliography list on Wikipedia that he has a few adaptations of songs from this past decade, though they’re still unpublished.

And what I have today is the second book collecting that work, the grandly titled The P. Craig Russell Library of Opera Adapations, Vol. 2 . It’s a 2003 book, collecting four adaptations spanning the late ’70s to the late ’90s, and Russell worked with different collaborators on each of them, some more involved than others. I...

Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson Thriller ‘The Kill Room’ Lands at Shout Studios (Exclusive)
Image
Shout Studios acquired North American rights to “The Kill Room,” a thriller starring Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson and Joe Manganiello.

The distribution and production division of indie Shout Factory has emerged victorious in a bidding war at Cannes Film Festival. Shout Studios plans to release the film in theaters this fall.

“The Kill Room” was directed by Nicol Paone and written by Jonathan Jacobson. The dark comedic-thriller follows an art dealer (Thurman) who teams with a hitman (Manganiello) and his boss (Jackson) for a money laundering scheme. The plan accidentally turns the hired killer into an overnight avant-garde sensation, forcing the dealer to play the art world against the underworld.

“’The Kill Room’ is a sharp, darkly comic evisceration of the art collecting scene, delivered with wily relish by Uma Thurman and director Nicol Paone. We’re confident this will play very well with audiences who like their entertainment both witty and visceral,...

Lizzo and Gigi Hadid Dancing Together at the Met Gala Proves They Were the Life of the Party

Lizzo wasn't shy about performing in front of some of the biggest stars in the world at the 2023 Met Gala. While playing some of her hits at the May 1 event, the star left the stage and moved out into the crowd. She soon began dancing with Gigi Hadid, who seemed more than happy to join in on the fun as Broadway producer Jordan Roth looked on. Fortunately, a photographer was on hand to capture the moment.

According to Vogue, Lizzo started her surprise performance by showing off her flute skills alongside fellow flautist James Galway. They played an excerpt from Mozart's "The Magic Flute." She then removed her silver Fendi cape to reveal a glittery Yitty bodysuit. She also performed "Truth Hurts," "Good as Hell," "Cuz I Love You," "Juice," and "About Damn Time," as well as "Flight of the Bumblebee" alongside Galway.

Though those of us who didn't...

‘The Magic Flute’, With A ‘Harry Potter’ Feel And YA Cred, Hopes To Hit A High Note – Specialty Preview
Image
Shout! Studios presents The Magic Flute by Florian Zigl, executive produced by Roland Emmerich, at 325 theaters with expansion likely. A reimagining of the Mozart opera, it follows a present-day teen sent from London to the Austrian Alps on singing scholarship at the legendary Mozart boarding school. There, he discovers a century old forgotten passageway into the magical world of Mozart’s famed opera.

This Harry Potter-ish adventure fantasy stars Jack Wolfe as Tim Walker, who passes from school into the world of the opera and its many adventures as hero Prince Tamino. Wide releases may be picking up steam and Scream, but in terms of new specialty, and family fare, these isn’t much new competition this weekend.

Melissa Boag, EVP of Family Entertainment at Shout! Studios, hopes it will play with fans of magical adventure, Harry Potter, and classical music. Wolfe is a star of Netflix YA series Shadow & Bone.

His Dark Materials' Dafne Keen And Amir Wilson On Episode 4's Heartbreaking Moment [Exclusive Interview]
Image
This post contains spoilers for "His Dark Materials" season 3.

"His Dark Materials" hasn't wasted any time getting to the meat of the last book in Philip Pullman's trilogy, "The Amber Spyglass." The plot has only thickened in episodes 3 and 4 of the show's third and final season, with Will (Amir Wilson) and Lyra (Dafne Keen) entering the Land of the Dead to rescue her friend Roger. In order to do that, they first need to restore the subtle knife, which was broken in episode 2. Luckily, they know just the bear for the job.

Of course, a living person can't just head into the afterlife without suffering any consequences, and for Lyra, the price is indeed a steep one. In order to make the trip, she must part with her daemon, Pan. Anyone familiar with "His Dark Materials" knows that this is tantamount to being separated from your soul, and the scene is absolutely heartbreaking.
