The series hails from writers and executive producers David Slack, Josh Campbell, and Matt Stuecken. McG is also an executive producer along with Mary Viola and Corey Marsh via Wonderland Sound and Vision. Wonderland is currently under a non-exclusive broadcast direct development deal with Fox.

The official logline for “Borrowed Time” states: “Neuroscientist Mimi Peters is working to extract memories from the human brain. Her technology is too dangerous to test on the living. Exclusive: Sf Studios, the Nordic film and TV studio behind A Man Called Otto, is shutting its UK production arm as part of a restructure.

Sf Studios Production Limited is being wound up in the UK, with PricewaterhouseCoopers appointed to oversee a voluntary liquidation five years after the company was first established.

Tim King, executive vice president of production for Sf Studios, said the studio was “restructuring” its UK entities. “There are still rights that we wish to exploit, but in a different format,” he said.

Sf Studios Production had two employees in the UK, both of whom have left the company to “continue with other opportunities” elsewhere, according to King.

Sf Studios Production’s revenue was £1.3M ($1.6M) in its most recently published earnings for the year to March 2022. This was a 94% decline on sales of £20.7M in 2021.

Sf Studios, the 104-year old Nordic giant, has crashed into the awards season with Tom Hanks’ “A Man Called Otto,” which it produced with Playtone and fully financed.

Buzzed about as a potentially strong Oscar candidate since its first official screening in L.A. last week, the Sony Pictures film is a remake of “A Man Called Ove,” the Swedish hit also produced by Sf Studios. The 2015 film, adapted from Fredrik Backman’s global bestseller, earned two Oscar nominations.

Exclusive: Finding Neverland, World War Z and The Kite Runner director Marc Forster has been set to direct Oscar winner Tom Hanks in the anticipated U.S. adaptation of Swedish comedy hit A Man Called Ove, we can reveal.

Two-time Oscar nominee David Magee is scripting the project and re-uniting with Forster after their collaboration on drama Finding Neverland, for which both were BAFTA nominated.

Production is due to begin this year on the feature, which has been in the works for a few years and is based on the Swedish hit novel by Fredrik Backman. The life-affirming comedy about love and unexpected friendships sold more than 7 million copies worldwide and remained on the New York Times bestseller list for 77 consecutive weeks at the time of its release.

The novel was subsequently adapted for the big screen by Sf Studios, which released the movie in 2015, garnering two Oscar nominations.

While the other streaming services set up recurring franchises, Hulu has opted to get a bit more experimental with its original offerings in August 2021.

Hulu’s list of new releases this month is highlighted by three original series concepts with promise. Reservation Dogs premieres on August 9. Co-created by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), this story will follow four indigenous teenagers in Oklahoma as they stave off boredom and adulthood. Next up is Nine Perfect Strangers on August 18. This miniseries, based on a book of the same name, is produced by David E. Kelley and features staggering cast of Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, Luke Evans, Samara Weaving, and more.

Only Murders in the Building is likely the biggest thing to look forward to in August though. Premiering on August 31, this comedy stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez as three true crime-obsessed friends who stumble into a true crime of their own.

The promise of an actual theatrical blockbuster, “Godzilla vs. Kong,” seems to have thrown the VOD charts into stasis. All three of the current #1 titles on four VOD charts also held top spots last week, with no new or reduced price offerings giving much competition.

“Monster Hunter” remains #1 at GooglePlay, and is the only title to rank on all four lists. Paul W.S. Anderson’s film, initially PVOD but now at standard pricing, has been #1 on all of the charts at different times. Based on the East Coast, Baker will participate in AFM 2020 Online next week when he presents a session on marketing for producing and filmmakers.

Exclusive: Los Angeles-based Swedish singer songwriter Tove Lo has been cast for her acting debut in The Emigrants, the $10M Scandi epic from local major Sf Studios.

Erik Poppe (Utøya: July 22) is helming the adaptation of Vilhelm Moberg’s classic novels which chronicle the one and a half million Swedes who sought a better life across the Atlantic in the mid-19th century. Production is scheduled to get underway in the Western part of Sweden in September.

One of Sweden’s biggest musical exports, Tove Lo’s hit singles include Habits (Stay High), which reached number three on the U.S. Billboard chart and has had close to 700 million streams on Spotify and Youtube, while she has also co-written songs including Lorde’s Homemade Dynamite and Ellie Goulding’s Love Me Like You Do, which was on the Fifty Shades Of Grey soundtrack and was Grammy and Golden Globe nominated.

The film landscape in Scandinavia is far from homogenous. In Sweden, where no drastic coronavirus restrictions were enforced, shoots were not suspended so long as no more than 50 people were assembled, while elsewhere in the Nordics, a lockdown was imposed and film productions were stopped.

On April 14, film production resumed in Denmark — after a pause that lasted more than a month — under a new set of rules relating to the coronavirus crisis that also apply to Sweden, according to the Nordic Film Guide, which was put together by the Swedish banner Hobby Film and based on information released by government bodies. Besides leaner crew numbers, the guidelines also require at least 4 square-meters (43 square-feet) between each person on interior shoots and no buffets or coffee stations on set. Crowd scenes are out of the question right now. Shooting in public places in Sweden is permitted, while Denmark is allowing such lensing on a case-by-case basis.

As it continues to expand its global profile, Nordic major Sf Studios is ramping up its U.K. operations with high-profile new hires and is developing “Don’t Move,” an English-language survival thriller project to be directed by Scandinavian up-and-comer Alain Darborg (“Alex”).

At an event held today in Berlin, Scandi powerhouse Sf Studios revealed that it has boosted its UK office with two executive hires as it looks to increase its output of English Language film and TV projects.

Joining the company are Sudie Smyth as VP Production UK & International, and Indy Datta as VP Legal & Business Affairs UK & International.

Smyth was previously Head of Production at Pinewood Pictures, and more recently worked at European Film Bonds as a completion guarantor on titles including How To Guild A Girl and Wild Rose. Datta is an established lawyer who has worked producers, distributors, broadcasters and financiers.

The pair will report directly to Fredrik Wikström Nicastro, the company’s Stockholm-based Senior Vice President International Production, and work closely with Kate Myers, VP Development UK & international, who heads up the London office.

As Sf Studios bulks up its pipeline with ambitious in-house productions, the company’s international sales division is now aiming to widen its scope through third-party pickups, with an eye on non-Scandinavian projects.

Spearheaded by Anita Simovic, Sf Studios’ international sales team will be bringing to Cannes a couple pickups: Santiago Requejo’s heartfelt comedy drama “Grandpas,” the company’s first Spanish-language acquisition, and Kasper Torsting’s Wwi-set Danish love drama “A War Within.”

Simovic says the company is now actively seeking projects from independent producers which have definite international potential. “These can be Nordic, but can be of any origin and in any language, as long as we find them commercial from an international perspective,’ says the sales exec, who added that Sf Studios is primarily looking for actioners, thrillers, crime tales, family animation and genre films.
