“Words of War,” the upcoming political thriller based on the life of murdered Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya and a film that boasts Senn Penn among its exec producers, has been acquired for a number of international territories.

The film — starring a trio of BAFTA nominees in Maxine Peake, Ciarán Hinds and Jason Isaacs — has been bought for the U.K. and Ireland by Signature Entertainment, with plans a theatrical release. Meanwhile, it’s been picked up by Eagle Pictures for Italy, Divisa Films for Spain, Dimeo Films for Poland, and Front Row Entertainment for the Middle East. The film is being released theatrically in the U.S. by Rolling Pictures.

Amy Adams charmed fans with her widely appreciated portrayal of Lois Lane during Zack Snyder’s DC stint.

“Words of War,” the political thriller executive produced by Sean Penn, will be released in theaters on May 2.

Rolling Pictures and Decal announced the release date along with an official poster. Directed by James Strong, the film is also executive produced by Representative Eric Swalwell (CA-14).

“Words of War” is based on a true story and follows world-renowned journalist and human rights activist Anna Politkovskaya on her brave crusade, fighting to be an independent voice of truth for the Russian people, putting her own life in jeopardy despite numerous acts of intimidation and violence. Exclusive: Mad Distribution, the pan-Arab releasing arm of Cairo-based pan-Arab film company Mad Solutions, has acquired all Middle East and North African rights to Annemarie Jacir’s Palestine 36.

Cape Fear is based on John D. MacDonald’s novel The Executioners — which inspired the 1962 feature of the same name directed by J. Lee Thompson from storyboards devised by original director Alfred Hitchcock — and the 1991 remake directed by Scorsese.

The 10-episode series greenlit in November, is described as a tense, Hitchcockian thriller and an examination of America’s obsession with true crime in the 21st century. Everything’s Coming Up Carrie!

January proved to be a busy, varied month on Horror Queers. We kicked off 2025 with a look at Sophia Takal’s examination of toxic friendships in Into the Dark: “New Year, New You” (listen), tackled Quentin Tarantino’s half of the Grindhouse double feature with Death Proof (listen), revisited George Waggner’s 1941 classic The Wolf Man (listen), then begged for Aylmer’s juice in Frank Henenlotter’s Brain Damage (listen).

To wrap up January, we’re taking Carrie White to prom in Brian De Palma‘s adaptation of Stephen King‘s debut novel, Carrie. The classic film about telekinesis follows timid, bullied Carrie (Sissy Spacek) struggling to fit in at high school and get out from under the thumb of her overbearing religious mother (Piper Laurie).

Unexpected kindness arrives courtesy of popular girl Sue Snell (Amy Irving), who volunteers her boyfriend Tommy (William Katt) to take Carrie to prom.

Blu-ray.com is reporting that Universal Home Entertainment has announced that not only is Nosferatu getting a 4K Uhd Blu-ray release, but there will be an extended cut of the film as well. The Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray physical media items is scheduled to hit retailers on February 18.

Filmmaker Robert Eggers delivered a daring new take on the iconic Count Orlok in Nosferatu and, understandably, the undead vampire's appearance was kept under wraps leading up to the movie's release.

We've since seen a few blurry shots of Bill Skarsgård's grotesque blood-sucker but now have officially released footage of the Count in all his horrifying glory. That's thanks to a featurette exploring the It and Eternals star's transformation into one of the most iconic movie monsters in history.

The mustache remains a point of contention for many horror fans, though as Eggers has pointed out in multiple interviews, it made sense to head down that route with the nightmare-inducing Transylvania nobleman. In fact, Orlok looking so real is what makes him so scary in this remake.

Long before Aaron Taylor-Johnson became the iconic Spider-Man villain in Kraven the Hunter, the Marvel actor played a much, much more sinister role in one of the more underappreciated thrillers of the 2010s. The role garnered Taylor-Johnson a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture, but the actor has now admitted to having a "real issue" taking on the part of serial killer Ray Marcus.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson has quickly become a notable name in Hollywood, having appeared in a handful of memorable films over the last decade. He will still be best known to many audiences for his starring role in Kick-Ass (2010) and the 2013 sequel, but he also played the lead in 2014's Godzilla, which remains a highlight of Legendary's MonsterVerse.

Since debuting in Marvel Comics' The Amazing Spider-Man #15 back in 1964, Kraven the Hunter has become an important part of Spider-Man's lore, becoming obsessed with hunting down the web-slinger to proclaim himself as the world's greatest hunter. Kraven has been at the center of some of Marvel Comics' most iconic storylines.

There’s a saying among filmmakers about comedy movies: you can’t keep them on the shelf for long or else they’ll go stale.

The same is equally true about superhero films, and it’s a fate that Sony’s Kraven the Hunter suffered this weekend, becoming the lowest opening in the studio’s Marvel canon with $11 million three-day total.

The bomb is the third strike for Sony/Marvel following 2022’s Morbius ($73.8M) and this year’s Madame Web ($43.8M). These are films made strictly by the Sony brass without the nuance of Lord & Miller, who steer their Spider-Verse animated movies, and Marvel Cinematic Universe boss Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal, who shepherd their Tom Holland-starring MCU movies. Combined, the Holland and Spider-Verse titles have grossed $6.85 billion worldwide.

From director Joshua Oppenheimer comes a poignant and deeply human musical about a family that survived the end of the world.

The family consists of a couple and their young adult son who has never seen the outside world. There’s also a maid, a doctor, a butler and a young woman who managed to survive and find her way in. Initially feeling righteousness over their survival, the couple are soon haunted by regret for those they lost and guilt over their own contribution to the apocalypse.

The medieval action-drama stars Claes Bang. The film was written and directed by Hamm.

CAA’s Roeg Sutherland is set to be honored with the Zurich Film Festival’s Game Changer Award for his outstanding achievements and contributions within the film industry.

The co-Head of CAA’s Media Finance department as well as its International Film Group, will be presented with the award during the festival’s industry-focused Zurich Summit, which takes place in October within the framework of the 20th Zurich Film Festival (Zff).

As part of the recognition, FilmNation Entertainment CEO Glen Basner will host the Game Changer Award recipient conversation, in which he will speak with Sutherland about his journey.

Munich-based sales company Beta Cinema unveiled the all-rights deals to Altitude (UK & Ireland) and SquareOne Entertainment for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, following the film’s well-attended press and industry screening in Toronto on Thursday.

Both distributors are targeting a release date in Q1 2025.

Beta Cinema has already announced deals with Sf Studios, Beta Fiction (Spain), Eagle Pictures (Italy), Dutch Filmworks (Benelux), Pris Audiovisuais (Portugal), Monolith Films (Poland), Cinemart (Czech Republic), Blitz (Former Yugoslavia), Ads (Hungary and Romania), Beta Film (Bulgaria), Tfg (Greece), Ukraine (Top Film) and The Plot Pictures (Middle East & Turkey) earlier this year.

Director Hamm’s adaptation of Friedrich Schiller’s classic play is fresh out of post-production.

Bang stars as titular hero opposite Farahani as his wife. They are joined by Connor Swindells, Jonah Hauer-King, Ellie Bamber, Rafe Spall and Emily Beecham, with Academy-Award winner Ben Kingsley and Academy-Award nominee Jonathan Pryce.

A movie adaptation of Blood on Snow has major stars attached. The project is based on the 2015 crime novel of the same name by Norwegian author Jo Nesb, which was the first installment of the Olav Johansen series. Set in Oslo in the 1970s, it follows a turf war between two major gangs. A previous film adaptation of the novel was announced in 2017 with Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire at the helm making his directorial debut, though that project never came to fruition.

Per Deadline, as Blood on Snow heads into pre-sales at the Toronto International Film Festival, it has attached two major stars.
