Exclusive: Netflix and Jennifer Lopez are building on their strong partnership for the superstar’s next project, with plans to team her with an iconic director. Sources tell Deadline that Oscar winner Robert Zemeckis has come on to direct an adaptation of The Last Mrs. Parrish, with Lopez on board to star.

The film is in development with Andrea Berloff and Oscar nominee John Gatins penning the script. This marks a reunion for Zemeckis and Gatins, who worked together on the Oscar-nominated Denzel Washington drama Flight.

Liza Chasin is producing for 3dot Productions along with Molly Sims for Something Happy Productions, and Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina for Nuyorican Productions. Margaret Chernin of 3dot will exec produce as will Lynne Constantine and Valerie Constantine, Jack Rapke and Derek Hogue.

Based on the Liv Constantine novel, the story follows a con artist (Lopez) who targets a wealthy couple — the Parrishes — as her next victims.

Things are moving faster than a Mos Espa podrace over at Lucasfilm. On Wednesday, we wrote that heavyweight writer-producer Damon Lindelof and his new partner (padawan?) Justin Britt-Gibson had walked away as writers of the upcoming (and untitled) “Star Wars” film. The project, currently more shrouded in more mystery than Emperor Palpatine, is set to be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, a “Ms. Marvel” vet and director-producer on a long list of documentaries.

But the Kathleen Kennedy-led production shingle has found its new scribe. Steven Knight, the writer-director of Tom Hardy vehicle “Locke” and creator of “Peaky Blinders,” is currently suiting up to travel to that galaxy far, far away. The British Knight has also written the screenplay for the Steven Frears film “Dirty Pretty Things,” the David Cronenberg film “Eastern Promises,” and the underrated Robert Zemeckis spy thriller “Allied.”

As it battles to become one of Europe’s foremost production hubs, its service sector has grown with the Mediapro Studio and Secuoya Studios recently launching international shoot service divisions. Following, profiles of five of Spain’s top service players.

Babieka

For over 50 years, Babieka has helped handle big budget international shoots in Spain. Ridley Scott’s “Exodus,” Terry George’s “The Promise” and Reed Morano’s “The Rhythm Section” figure amongst its recent titles. Babieka also produces (Netflix film “The Paramedic”) and co-produces. “Top international productions are in our DNA. These prove an amazing training ground for our cast and crew that we benefit from in our own productions,” says CEO Denis Pedregosa.

Although she broke out playing the tough-skinned Andréa in the French show “Call My Agent!,” Camille Cottin comes off as gentle, bubbly and down to earth in real life. The hard-working Cottin didn’t shoot to fame; she became one of France’s hottest actors in her late 30s, after appearing in numerous stage plays, shorts and TV series over more than 15 years. Now, she is navigating between big American movies and French cinema with Tom McCarthy’s “Stillwater,” which bows at Cannes, and Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci” lined up for later this year, as well as Rachel Lang’s war drama “Our Men,” the closing film of Directors’ Fortnight.

What was your reaction when you read the script of “Stillwater” and what did you think of the character you played?

I read it in one go, and it was a very nice feeling because I got completely pulled in.

Tom Hanks’ “Bios” will move from April 16 to August 13, Universal Pictures announced on Thursday.

Amblin Entertainment’s film will take the place of an untitled Blumhouse film on Universal’s release calendar.

Miguel Sapochnik will direct, from an original screenplay by Craig Luck, who will be making his feature-film writing debut, and Ivor Powell.

“Bios” follows an ailing inventor, the last man on Earth, who builds an android to keep him and his dog company as he goes on a journey across the country.

Caleb Landry Jones, Samira Wiley, Laura Harrier and Skeet Ulrich also star.

The film is produced by Kevin Misher, Jack Rapke, Jacqueline Levine, and Powell. Robert Zemeckis, Craig Luck, Miguel Sapochnik, Andy Berman and Adam Merims are executive producing.

Currently, the Aretha Franklin biopic “Respect” will hit theaters on August 13, as well as Ben Affleck’s “Deep Water.”

“Witches, they’re real, and they hate children,” Chris Rock warns us in the first The Witches trailer. Yes, even with Everybody Hates Chris-style narration, Four Tops orchestration, and CGI animation, Roald Dahl’s message lives on. “It doesn’t matter who you are or what you look like, so long as somebody loves you.” You can rest assured that person will not be a witch.

The children are entrapped in the bodies of mice, and the Warner Bros. feature adaptation of Dahl’s 1983 novel was supposed to be released in theaters. But it will hit HBO Max on Oct. 22. Just in time for Halloween. The film will fly into theatres internationally beginning October 28.

“Based on the timeless story, the reimagined Roald Dahl’s The Witches … brings a fresh sense of humor along with warmth and the unexpected to what is sure to be a Halloween favorite,” reads the official synopsis.

Delayed due to Covid-19 concerns, the Newport Beach Film Festival is still intent on bringing attention to innovation in the film industry. The virtual event, scheduled to take place Oct. 1-11, follows a drive-in opening night film screening that took place Aug. 13. “A Life of Endless Summers: The Bruce Brown Story” unspooled in a parking lot in Fashion Island mall between Bloomingdales and Nordstrom.

Brazil’s Globo media group has secured a nomination each in the news and the current affairs category at the International Emmy Awards nominations that were announced Tuesday by the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

In the news category, TV Globo is nominated for “Ghost Staff,” an investigative program following staff at Rio de Janeiro’s state legislature who received high salaries from public money without showing up for work. In the current affairs category, GloboNews/Globo TV is nominated for “Allies” where journalist Gabriel Chaim was embedded with the Syrian forces fighting against the Isis.

The rest of the nominations are spread evenly with nods for the BBC, Channel 4, Al Jazeera, ITN, Rt International, Sveriges Television and ITV. The nominees span six countries – Brazil, Nigeria, Qatar, Russia, Sweden and the U.K. The nominated programs were broadcast between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2019, the competition’s eligibility period.

With his latest drama To the Ends of the Earth finally securing U.S. distribution, Kiyoshi Kurosawa embarked on production on his follow-up, the suspense/romance Wife of a Spy. Coming from the director who named Robert Zemeckis’ romantic spy thriller Allied his favorite film of the past decade, our expectations are quite high and now the first teaser trailer and poster have landed.

Starring Yu Aoi and Issey Takahashi, the director’s first wartime drama is set in 1940 in Kobe as World War II approaches. It follows a merchant who witnesses a horrific act and attempts to reveal it to the world, only to have his wife try to stop him out of safety. Co-written by the director and Ryūsuke Hamaguchi, the film is set for an October 16 release in Japan, and it’s one of the titles being presented in Cannes virtual market, which kicks off next week.

Universal Pictures said on Friday that the studio has pushed the release of its heartfelt Tom Hanks-led sci-fi film “Bios” to April 2021.

The film was initially set to hit theaters on Oct. 2, 2020 but will now premiere on April 16, 2021. The news comes after Warner Bros. shifted a major portion of its future slate, including moving “Wonder Woman 1984” to Oct. 2, 2020, from its August release date.

Emmanuel Acho has been selected as Jason Whitlock’s replacement on FS1 series “Speak for Yourself.” He’ll join Marcellus Wiley on a “revamped” version of the sports debate show.

“Emmanuel is the perfect fit for the Fox Sports family because he is thoughtful, inspiring and passionate,” Charlie Dixon, executive vice president of content at FS1, said in a statement on Wednesday. “He has already achieved an extraordinary amount of success in his short broadcasting career, and we all firmly believe this is just the tip of the iceberg.”

“To join the Fox Sports family and have the opportunity to co-host one of the most notable sports talk shows in sports entertainment is an absolute dream come true,” Acho said. “Marcellus is like a big brother to me, he’s provided tremendous advice throughout this process, so I’m beyond eager to begin working with him.”

Disney's Pinocchio live-action remake is finally happening as director Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future) has closed a deal to direct the movie. This has been a long-gestating project, and one that has seen several filmmakers come and go over the years, including Paddington and Paddington 2 filmmaker Paul King. Now, it's in Zemeckis' hands and it looks like things will be getting serious in a hurry.

According to a new report, Robert Zemeckis has locked down a deal to co-write and direct the Pinocchio remake. As we previously reported last October, Zemeckis had been in discussions with the studio for the gig, but nothing materialized until now. It's said that Zemeckis will write a new draft of the screenplay alongside Chris Weitz. The expectation is that production could begin before year's end. Should that hold, we are likely to hear of possible casting decisions and maybe even some story details in the coming months.
