There was once an era in which Robert Zemeckis would have been considered one of the greatest living filmmakers, but the last few decades have marked a significant downward spiral in his career trajectory. Zemeckis proved with early films like Back to the Future and Who Framed Roger Rabbit that he could utilize emerging technology in a way that reflected the narrative goals, but he has grown so concerned with pushing the boundaries of the medium forward that he no longer seems interested in telling complete stories. Although he has dedicated a majority of his time to making computer-generated animated films aimed at children, Zemeckis proved he was still capable of making mature dramas when he teamed up with Brad Pitt on the World War II thriller Allied. It’s not a surprise that the film was such a fresh and exciting turn for the director, as it came from...

War films have been a staple of Hollywood filmmaking for over 100 years, captivating audiences with stories about the heroics and sacrifices of people who fight in, or are trapped inside, wide-scale conflicts. World War II has provided an especially deep canvass for directors, being a conflict that so broadly affected many people around the world.
Though many World War II films focus on grand battles and explosive combat, some of the best movies about the conflict focus on emotional romances between characters who are caught in the crossfire of the war. These movies provide captivating looks into how powerful love can be, even in the middle of devastation.

Wedding bells are stinging (sorry) in a new action comedy starring Anne Hathaway and Dave Bautista. Jonathan Tropper, who wrote 2014's This is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project in 2022 (and was the creator and showrunner of Banshee) is scripting the new film for Amazon MGM Studios and Agbo. In an exclusive Deadline report, the outlet says that the two stars have signed onto the project and will co-produce with each of their respective companies.
The story is based on a wild series of actual events where two FBI agents played a couple in order to infiltrate a criminal enterprise in, you guessed it, New Jersey. The sting operation came to a head at the couples' staged wedding, where the criminal bosses were arrested as they checked in for their table assignments. While it sounds like a plan slightly more sophisticated than a free boat giveaway that would nab Homer Simpson,...

Few cinematic characters have left as big of an impression as Ellen Ripley, Sigourney Weaver’s iconic “Alien” survivor, who led four films in the franchise and left behind some massive shoes to fill for everyone who’s come since. In “Alien: Romulus,” that’s a young cast of franchise newcomers, led by “Priscilla” and “Civil War” star Cailee Spaeny.
Directed by “Don’t Breathe” and “Evil Dead” filmmaker Fede Álvarez, the latest installment heads back between the events of “Alien” and “Aliens,” introducing a young group of friends desperate to escape their grungy mining colony. Robert Zemeckis reunites with Tom Hanks and Robin Wright for an ugly de-aged nightmare that boringly follows the same house throughout time
A swirl of concern and outright fear has long been following Robert Zemeckis’s unusual big bet Here, a 30-year reunion for his Forrest Gump co-stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. The film, based on Richard McGuire’s comic strip turned graphic novel, was heralded as the most ambitious use of digital de-aging yet, following the pair through the decades, from teenage years to final days, as part of an ensemble of characters who have lived in the same space over time. Early stills, and a trailer, had clued us into the film being plainly terrifying but nothing had quite prepared us for just how unforgivably dull it would also be. Here lies the year’s most eerie and embarrassing misfire.

Robert Zemeckis has always been a filmmaker who doubles as a magician. His films are loaded with neat little tricks, and, as is the case with any good magician, you find yourself wondering how he pulled them off. His debut "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" used clever editing, archival footage, and stand-ins to recreate the Beatles' debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. The "Back to the Future" trilogy is bursting with eye-popping special effects. "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" seamlessly blended live-action and animation. "Death Becomes Her" is overloaded with gross-out gags. "Forrest Gump" found fun little ways to insert Tom Hanks into moments of televised American history. The list goes on and on. But at some point, the trickery began to overwhelm the process. His "Beowulf," "The Polar Express," and "A Christmas Carol" embraced heavy motion-capture animation with ghastly, uncanny valley results ("The Polar Express" has somehow become a recurring...

Critics' reviews for Tom Hanks' new movie, Here, have arrived, but they are not so great. Based on the 2014 graphic novel by Richard McGuire, Here tells the story of multiple generations of couples and families who have lived in the same house spanning centuries. Killers of the Flower Moon screenwriter Eric Roth co-wrote the film with Oscar-winning filmmaker, Robert Zemeckis, who also produced and directed the film. Here stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright in lead roles, reuniting onscreen for the first time since co-starring in Zemeckis' 1994 movie Forrest Gump, along with Paul Bettany and Kelly Reilly.
The first reviews for Here are in, and critics have found themselves generally unimpressed with the Forrest Gump reunion. The Daily Beast called the Robert Zemeckis movie "an embarrassment." IndieWire echos the same sentiment, calling out the director for wasting "a de-aged Tom Hanks and Robin Wright." IGN points out that the movie...

Brad Pitt and George Clooney are definitely Hollywood heartthrobs, but while their work is all glam and glory, their personal lives tell a different story — especially for Pitt. Since the ’90s, when he first shot to fame, he’s had two big relationships that people still can’t stop talking about.

Pitt and Angelina Jolie were once seen as the ultimate couple, even with the shadow of Jennifer Aniston over them. Their split was a hot topic for years, and to maybe steer clear of more love drama, it looks like the actor is now taking relationship cues from Clooney.

Never tell “Star Wars” the odds!
Things are moving faster than a Mos Espa podrace over at Lucasfilm. On Wednesday, we wrote that heavyweight writer-producer Damon Lindelof and his new partner (padawan?) The project, currently more shrouded in more mystery than Emperor Palpatine, is set to be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, a “Ms. Marvel” vet and director-producer on a long list of documentaries.
But the Kathleen Kennedy-led production shingle has found its new scribe. Steven Knight, the writer-director of Tom Hardy vehicle “Locke” and creator of “Peaky Blinders,” is currently suiting up to travel to that galaxy far, far away. The British Knight has also written the screenplay for the Steven Frears film “Dirty Pretty Things,” the David Cronenberg film “Eastern Promises,” and the underrated Robert Zemeckis spy thriller “Allied.”

“Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight is set to write the screenplay for the untitled “Star Wars” movie that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (“Ms. Marvel”) is attached to direct, as original screenwriters Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson have departed the project, Variety has confirmed.
The movie is widely expected to be among Lucasfilm’s first “Star Wars” films since 2019’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.” More information about the movie, including a possible title, is expected to be announced at the Star Wars Celebration in London in April. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has so far left out Celebrían, Galadriel's daughter in Tolkien canon, but the speculated cast list for season 2 suggests that this may change. In season 1, the legendary elf revealed that she believed her husband, Celeborn, was dead (something that Lotr fans know isn't true), but nothing was mentioned of Celebrían. It's possible that she hasn't been born yet, since Middle-earth's timeline has been altered in Rings of Power, but it may instead just be that Galadriel has been thus far unwilling to mention a daughter she believes to be dead, like her husband.
In The Rings of Power season 1, The absence of Galadriel's husband, Celeborn, raised several questions. According to Tolkien canon, she should have been married by this point in the history of Middle-earth. However, with her focus on avenging her brother, Finrod, and removing Sauron's power from Middle-earth,...

Bidding to attract some of the biggest movies on earth for far longer shoots, Spain’s Canary Islands has powered up its maximum tax relief available on a single film lensed there to €36 million (38.9 million) per movie. That is one of the highest movie shoot caps in Europe.
In a parallel move, ceilings on fiscal incentives enjoyed by TV productions – whether made for established players or streaming services – have been raised to an extraordinary €18 million (19.4 million) per single episode. There is no limit on the number of episodes which can enjoy this facility.
Rolling off a Canary Island Special Zone (Zec) tax status offered to regions on the periphery of the European Union, the Islands already offered one of the highest deduction rates for film and TV shoots anywhere in the world: 54 for a first €1 million (1.1 million) eligible expenditure and 45 on further spend.

There’s a scene in Bullet Train that perfectly illustrates what a misfire this supposed action comedy is. A bunch of rival assassins with overlapping and clashing objectives are all on the same overnight high-speed train from Tokyo to Kyoto. Two of them — Brad Pitt’s “Ladybug” and Brian Tyree Henry’s “Lemon” — find themselves in a face-to-face encounter in the quiet car. Naturally, the confrontation turns violent. In a movie that actual took action comedy seriously, this might have been hilarious: How do you beat someone up, maybe even kill them, without making any noise? But here, after the barest nod to the need for silence, rowdy fisticuffs commence, and the only concession to comedy — allegedly — is Pitt snapping at the civilian who shushes them to “eat a bag of dicks”… and then apologizing, because, you see, he’s on a journey to be a better person.

The meltdowns were aplenty in this week’s episode of The Challenge, and while some of the sobbing was game-related, the rest of it was just a classic case of the beer tears.
Episode 2 seems a bit early for things to fall apart for the “agents,” but with that much money on the line and a pressure-cooking competition at hand, emotions are running at an all-time high. As the house continued its efforts to snipe out the rookies, a love triangle (of sorts) formed around Nelson that sent Ashley Mitchell into quite a dramatic tizzy. What went down, and who was eliminated?...

Although she broke out playing the tough-skinned Andréa in the French show “Call My Agent!,” Camille Cottin comes off as gentle, bubbly and down to earth in real life. The hard-working Cottin didn’t shoot to fame; she became one of France’s hottest actors in her late 30s, after appearing in numerous stage plays, shorts and TV series over more than 15 years. Now, she is navigating between big American movies and French cinema with Tom McCarthy’s “Stillwater,” which bows at Cannes, and Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci” lined up for later this year, as well as Rachel Lang’s war drama “Our Men,” the closing film of Directors’ Fortnight.
What was your reaction when you read the script of “Stillwater” and what did you think of the character you played?
I read it in one go, and it was a very nice feeling because I got completely pulled in.

“Witches, they’re real, and they hate children,” Chris Rock warns us in the first The Witches trailer. Yes, even with Everybody Hates Chris-style narration, Four Tops orchestration, and CGI animation, Roald Dahl’s message lives on. “It doesn’t matter who you are or what you look like, so long as somebody loves you.” You can rest assured that person will not be a witch.

The film was initially set to hit theaters on Oct. 2, 2020 but will now premiere on April 16, 2021. The news comes after Warner Bros. shifted a major portion of its future slate, including moving “Wonder Woman 1984” to Oct. 2, 2020, from its August release date.

Emmanuel Acho has been selected as Jason Whitlock’s replacement on FS1 series “Speak for Yourself.” He’ll join Marcellus Wiley on a “revamped” version of the sports debate show.
“Emmanuel is the perfect fit for the Fox Sports family because he is thoughtful, inspiring and passionate,” Charlie Dixon, executive vice president of content at FS1, said in a statement on Wednesday. “He has already achieved an extraordinary amount of success in his short broadcasting career, and we all firmly believe this is just the tip of the iceberg.”
“To join the Fox Sports family and have the opportunity to co-host one of the most notable sports talk shows in sports entertainment is an absolute dream come true,” Acho said. “Marcellus is like a big brother to me, he’s provided tremendous advice throughout this process, so I’m beyond eager to begin working with him.”

Brad Pitt knows how to take his shirt off all on his own.
The Oscar-winner, 56, featured in one of the most memorable scenes in Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood when his character, stuntman Cliff Booth, strips off his top while fixing an antenna.
When it came time for Quentin Tarantino to direct the scene, he was quickly brushed aside by Pitt, who has a bit of experience getting shirtless on camera.
“It was funny because actually in public Brad is kind of shy about things like that,” Tarantino, 57, said on the latest episode of Amy Schumer’s 3 Girls, 1 Keith podcast.

Disney's Pinocchio live-action remake is finally happening as director Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future) has closed a deal to direct the movie. This has been a long-gestating project, and one that has seen several filmmakers come and go over the years, including Paddington and Paddington 2 filmmaker Paul King. Now, it's in Zemeckis' hands and it looks like things will be getting serious in a hurry.
According to a new report, Robert Zemeckis has locked down a deal to co-write and direct the Pinocchio remake. As we previously reported last October, Zemeckis had been in discussions with the studio for the gig, but nothing materialized until now. It's said that Zemeckis will write a new draft of the screenplay alongside Chris Weitz. The expectation is that production could begin before year's end. Should that hold, we are likely to hear of possible casting decisions and maybe even some story details in the coming months.
