The dangerous in We Were Dangerous are three rebellious teen girls at a New Zealand reform school in 1954. New Zealand director Josephine Stewart-Te Whiu’s satiric We Were Dangerous is surprising – entertaining, funny yet terrifying – as these three independent girls resist the institution’s efforts to break their spirits and break their deep bonds of friendships. At the same time, the film goes from comedy to thriller, and delves into the abuses, not just of reform schools, but other institutions of that era and earlier ones, like orphanages, mental hospitals and boarding schools for indigenous children. At the same time, this is also a coming-of-age tale of friendship with moments of searing heart-breaking and touching ones of the bonds of teen friendship.

"Star Trek: Enterprise" ran for four seasons between 2001 and 2005. A prequel set in the 22nd century before Captain Kirk or the Federation, "Enterprise" also holds an embarrassing dishonor. It was the first "Trek" series since the original to not make it to seven seasons and more than 100 episodes. ("Enterprise" barely missed the mark at 98.) That, and a not-so-stellar first half, mean that "Enterprise" has a black sheep reputation. "Enterprise" didn't kill "Star Trek" — J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" film came out only four years later — but it did end 18 years of new "Trek" being continuously produced.
For "Enterprise" co-creator Brannon Braga, that hiatus wasn't the worst thing for "Star Trek."
"I thought it was time, ['Star Trek'] needed a break, it needed some time for people to want another show," said Braga at the STLV17 convention. "Enterprise" wasn't the show that made people want more, but it could've been.

Paapa Essiedu may soon be set to don the dark robes of Severus Snape in HBO’s “Harry Potter” series, but the British actor will first be getting into the black cloth of the clergy.
The “I May Destroy You” and “Black Mirror” star will play a Catholic priest alongside Keeley Hawes as a devoted nun in the Channel 4 drama “Falling,” which marks the first ever love story from BAFTA-winning “Adolescence” writer Jack Thorne. The Forge Entertainment, a Banijay U.K. company, produces.
In “Falling,” Essiedu’s priest and Hawes’ nun are both deeply committed to their work in the church and in their community. Neither are expected to fall in love. But when they do, both are forced to wrestle with what it means for them, their vows, and their relationship with God. Another day, another brutal cancellation. This time, the bad news comes courtesy of the streaming service Disney+, which has made the shocking decision not to continue a unique superhero series with a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Beginning back in 2023, Extraordinary drops audiences into a world where everyone develops superpowers once they hit 18. Well, everyone apart from Jen, who, six years after her 18th birthday, is still waiting for her superpowers to show up.
Both the first and second seasons of Extraordinary were well-received but, sadly, the superhero show will not return for a third. The cancellation of Extraordinary comes alongside another ax dropping, with this one landing on the historical drama Shardlake, which itself has an impressive 81% “certified fresh” score, after just one season. As per Variety, a Disney+ rep thanked the creative teams on both shows, saying:
“Disney+ Original series ‘Extraordinary’ will not be returning for a third season on the service.

Disney+ has cancelled two of its original series, Extraordinary and Shardlake, it’s now been revealed. More here.
Just after Paramount+ decided to pull the plug on the revived series of Frasier, according to Variety Disney+ have announced the cancellation of two of its original British dramas – Extraordinary and Shardlake.
Extraordinary, created and written by Emma Moran, is set in a world where teenagers develop super powers at the age of 18. The show follows Jen, the one girl who did not gain powers. The cancellation is especially upsetting for fans, as the second series ended on a cliffhanger that will now not be resolved. It feels like the 1990s and 2000s all over again.
Shardlake, based on the book series by C.J. Sansom and adapted for television by Stephen Butchard, is set during the dissolution of the monasteries in the Tudor era. Physically disabled barrister Master Matthew Shardlake is sent...

An acclaimed Denis Villeneuve sci-fi movie is performing well on Netflix. Villeneuve is an acclaimed Canadian director who became an international sensation with the release of his 2010 French-language feature Incendies. His first English-language feature was the 2013 thriller Prisoners, starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, which kicked off a star-studded run of English-language productions that also includes the 2015 crime drama Sicario, starring Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro, and Josh Brolin.

Christopher Nolan's Oscar-winning movie that made $740 million at the box office has landed on Netflix's Top 10 US chart a decade later. The visionary filmmaker is known for masterfully combining complex storytelling with visual spectacle, which often does very well at the box office, making him the seventh-highest-grossing director of all time, and is often showered with major accolades, including two Oscars. One of Nolan's first films, 2000's Memento, did very well at the box office, grossing over $40 million on a small $5–9 million budget and received two Oscar nods, one for Nolan's nonlinear screenplay.

There are 323 feature films eligible for the upcoming Academy Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Monday, though a whopping 36% of those – 116 feature films – are not eligible for consideration in the Best Picture category.
The discrepancy between films that have qualified for the top category and films that are eligible in other categories comes either because the filmmakers did not attempt to qualify – likely the case for several documentary, animated or international films. Or because of new eligibility rules that require Best Picture candidates to meet additional benchmarks for diversity and inclusion. This is the second year that Representation and Inclusion Standards (Raise) have been enforced, though they did not appear to disqualify any serious contenders in the category.
Among titles excluded from Best Picture consideration are Andrea Arnold’s “Bird,” starring Barry Keoghan, Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut “Woman of the Year,” Michael Keaton’s directorial debut “Knox Goes Away,...

“Carry-On”, Jaume Collet-Serra’s thriller with Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman, continues to add to its claim to be one of the most watched Netflix original movies ever. During the high-end viewership holiday period, it now has been #1 for three weeks in a row. Even being in the top spot for two consecutive weeks is rare among Netflix films, but a third return to #1 elevates it into a position not seen at least in the last two years.
Even “Glass Onion,” the “Knives Out” sequel, only managed two weeks at #1, and it is currently the #10 English-language film on the Netflix All Time list. Netflix will release worldwide statistics on Tuesday, but based on its current position, look for them to elevate “Carry-On” among their biggest successes.
“Gladiator II” (Paramount) immediately took over the #1 position on PVOD with its release after five weekends in theaters. It’s another sign of how lucrative these platforms are,...

Squid Game Season 2 was released today, Dec. 26, 2024, which follows arguably the biggest breakthrough in international television of all time. The first season of the South Korean drama became Netflix's most-watched series, prompting the platform to bring in many more acclaimed non-English shows. Even before Squid Game, though, Netflix was airing great international series like Undercover, the Belgian-Dutch crime show that led to the acclaimed prequel film, Ferry. While hardly as successful as Squid Game, the franchise developed a fanbase nonetheless, so, of course, there's now another title — Ferry 2.
The film follows Ferry and Ferry: The Series, which both earned a strong following and became beloved by fans of international crime dramas. While Ferry 2 is becoming another hit in terms of streaming numbers, fans of the franchise aren't too happy with it and how the movie treats its titular character, Ferry Bouman. A24’s “A Different Man” won best feature at the 2024 Gotham Awards Monday night at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.
Meanwhile, “Sing Sing” swept the acting categories, with Colman Domingo winning for best lead performance and Clarence Maclin for best supporting performance.
Each category for nominations is decided by a different jury of critics, journalists and other industry professionals, and screening links must be provided to all its jury members. An entirely different group determines the winners. That’s in contrast with the Oscars or the BAFTAs, which are determined by actors, filmmakers and other artists who are in the entertainment industry.
In addition to the nominees, the Gothams bestowed special tributes to some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, including Oscar winner Angelina Jolie (Performer Tribute) for “Maria,” Emmy winner Zendaya (Spotlight Tribute) for “Challengers,” Timothée Chalamet and James Mangold (Visionary Tribute) for “A Complete Unknown,” and the...

When the 34th annual Gotham Awards took place in Cipriani Wall Street in New York City on Monday, December 2, the Oscar race officially began. The Gothams traditionally occupy a spot on the awards calendar as the first major film-centric ceremony of the season, giving fans their first opportunity to see the year’s biggest stars on the red carpet. The event also marks awards watchers’ first chance to gauge the state of the race.
The night’s top prize went to “A Different Man,” Aaron Schimberg’s A24 body transformation comedy that premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. The film, which stars Sebastian Stan as a facially disfigured actor who undergoes an experimental surgery to boost his career, beat out Oscar frontrunners such as Sean Baker’s “Anora” and Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers.” The win could boost the award chances of both Schimberg and his stars Stan and Adam Pearson.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a major hit on VOD after achieving box office success in theaters. Directed once again by Tim Burton, the follow-up to 1988's Beetlejuice features the return of Michael Keaton as Betelgeuse, Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz, and Catherine O'Hara as Delia Deetz. The film follows three generations of the Deetz family as they return to the town of Winter River when Astrid Deetz (Jenna Ortega), Lydia's daughter, accidentally opens a portal to the Afterlife. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice reviews were mostly positive from critics and the film was a box office success, grossing just over $421 million worldwide.

The fiasco of “Joker: Folie à Deux” is something that Warner Bros. can’t hide from — other distributors question its officially reported $7 million gross for its second weekend, now #4 after initially ridiculously claiming #3. But the success of its “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” the actual #3, remains a nice counterbalance.
Tim Burton’s sequel, at $275 million in U.S./Canada gross, came out as a PVOD rental only 32 days after release (unusual these days for a WB hit — “Dune Part 2” and “Godzilla Vs. Kong” had 47 day windows). But even without specific figures, it’s clear that it got a lot of action.
It replaced Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the year’s second biggest grosser (more than double “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”) after the Marvel film’s first week out. And it likely wasn’t close — it is #1 at Fandango, which calculates by revenue. With “Deadpool” costing 25 percent more to rent ($24.99 to $19.99), that means it had a clear victory.

The Forge was one of this year's big surprises at the box office, with the faith-based movie from prolific director Alex Kendrick proving a huge hit with audiences following its theatrical release on August 23 earlier this year. The Forge is the latest movie from Kendrick, who is one of the few directors in history to have four movies receive an A+ grade on CinemaScore, while the movie also grossed over $30 million off just a $5 million budget. The Forge is available to buy and rent now, and to mark this launch, Collider is thrilled to exclusively present a deleted scene from the movie to our readers. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 73% of 11 critics' reviews are positive, but it also has a 99% positive rating on the Popcornmeter, which represents the audience satisfaction of the film, from over 2,500 verified ratings. Well, wasn’t it Aristotle who mused, “Excellence is never an accident”? He probably wasn’t talking about Dave Bautista’s career, but the shoe sure fits the metaphorical wrestling boot here. After hanging up his wrestling tights, Bautista could’ve settled for easy & explosion-laden blockbusters, but instead, he’s chosen a less traveled path, flexed his acting chops, and proved he’s more than just a muscle-bound action star.

Last year, Bautista made headlines for hanging up his Drax role and stepping away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So, what’s next after Marvel for him? We recently witnessed the grand spectacle of his latest film, The Killer’s Game. But rather than delivering a hit, the film ended up taking a nosedive at the box office, hitting a low note no one saw coming.

Dave Bautista's latest film The Killer's Game proves he can carry and lead action flicks. However, the film did not perform to expectations on its opening weekend at the box office.
Deadline reported The Killer's Game as one of this weekend's box-office casualties. Dave Bautista's action comedy earned $2.6 million in three days of screenings, setting a new record as the lowest-grossing theatrical film in the actor's career (beating Hotel Artemis' $3.2 million in 2018). Early reviews for The Killer's Game are also mixed with polarized consensus between audiences and critics. The report also revealed that casual and frequent moviegoers were largely unaware (and did not anticipate) the film's theatrical release, which in turn reflected in its first-weekend earnings. The Killer's Game reportedly has a budget of less than $30 million before marketing.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice scared away the domestic box office with a new record-breaking weekend, passing an important milestone globally on its way. For the new releases, Speak No Evil, the remake of the 2022 Danish horror, has bested other new releases.
Per Deadline, as of Sunday morning, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has added another $51.6 million this weekend. It marks it second weekend at number one, with a total of $188 million domestically. On international markets, the film has surpassed the $200 million milestone and has reached a total of $264.3 million. This means the film is on its way to making a profit, as it boasted a budget of $100 million. Per Hollywood's rule of thumb at the box office, a film needs to make roughly twice its budget to start earning money and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a certified success for Warner Bros.
