Sony Pictures Entertainment’s operating income for the full fiscal year ended March 31 fell 4 percent to $774 million from $808 million in dollar terms for the comparable period a year before, with Fy sales dipping 4 percent to $9.899 billion from $10.315 billion.

In the fiscal fourth quarter, Spe saw income increase over the previous quarter, rising over 70 percent to $354 million from $208 million. Revenue for Q4 was relatively flat, falling slightly to $2.729 billion from $2.743 billion.

Spe comprises the motion pictures division, television productions and media networks.

The motion pictures unit (which comprises sales from theatrical, home entertainment and streaming sales) saw Fy revenue rise 7 percent to $4.008 billion from $3.742 billion. "Star Trek: Enterprise" ran for four seasons between 2001 and 2005. A prequel set in the 22nd century before Captain Kirk or the Federation, "Enterprise" also holds an embarrassing dishonor. It was the first "Trek" series since the original to not make it to seven seasons and more than 100 episodes. ("Enterprise" barely missed the mark at 98.) That, and a not-so-stellar first half, mean that "Enterprise" has a black sheep reputation. "Enterprise" didn't kill "Star Trek" — J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" film came out only four years later — but it did end 18 years of new "Trek" being continuously produced.

For "Enterprise" co-creator Brannon Braga, that hiatus wasn't the worst thing for "Star Trek."

"I thought it was time, ['Star Trek'] needed a break, it needed some time for people to want another show," said Braga at the STLV17 convention. "Enterprise" wasn't the show that made people want more, but it could've been.

Exclusive: Boutique distribution company The Forge has acquired North American rights for award-winning New Zealand drama We Were Dangerous.

The film originally world premiered at SXSW last year, where it won the Special Jury Award, and has since been given a theatrical run by Madman Entertainment and Piki Films in New Zealand and Australia.

The Forge plans to release the film theatrically in more than 20 markets from April 4, 2025.

Starring the ensemble cast of Rima Te Wiata, Erana James, Nathalie Morris and Manaia Hall, the coming-of-age film follows a trio of Māori teenagers at the Te Motu School for Incorrigible and Delinquent Girls on an isolated island in 1954.

The girls develop a strong friendship as they rebel against the institution’s Christian indoctrination.

It is the debut film of Josephine Stewart-Te Whiu, with a screenplay by Maddie Dai and Taika Waititi, Carthew Neal, Bill Way, Elliott Whitton and Emily Gotto serving as executive producers.

Another day, another brutal cancellation. This time, the bad news comes courtesy of the streaming service Disney+, which has made the shocking decision not to continue a unique superhero series with a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Beginning back in 2023, Extraordinary drops audiences into a world where everyone develops superpowers once they hit 18. Well, everyone apart from Jen, who, six years after her 18th birthday, is still waiting for her superpowers to show up.

Both the first and second seasons of Extraordinary were well-received but, sadly, the superhero show will not return for a third. The cancellation of Extraordinary comes alongside another ax dropping, with this one landing on the historical drama Shardlake, which itself has an impressive 81% “certified fresh” score, after just one season. As per Variety, a Disney+ rep thanked the creative teams on both shows, saying:

Extraordinary, created and written by Emma Moran, is set in a world where teenagers develop super powers at the age of 18. The show follows Jen, the one girl who did not gain powers. The cancellation is especially upsetting for fans, as the second series ended on a cliffhanger that will now not be resolved. It feels like the 1990s and 2000s all over again.

Per Variety, Extraordinary has been canceled after two seasons, meaning the show will conclude with the cliffhanger ending in the Season 2 finale. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced on Monday the 207 feature films eligible for Best Picture consideration, two days before voting for the 2025 Oscar nominations begins.

There are 323 feature films eligible for the Academy Awards, but just 207 met the Best Picture competition eligibility requirements.

As stated by the Academy in a press release, “To be eligible for consideration in the general entry categories, under rules implemented for the 97th Academy Awards year, feature films must open in a commercial motion picture theater in at least one of six U.S. metropolitan areas: Los Angeles County; the City of New York; the Bay Area; Chicago, Illinois; Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas; and Atlanta, Georgia, between Jan. 1, 2024, and Dec. 31, 2024, and complete a minimum qualifying run of seven consecutive days in the same venue. Feature films must have a running time of more than 40 minutes.”

Or because of new eligibility rules that require Best Picture candidates to meet additional benchmarks for diversity and inclusion. “Anora,” a free-wheeling comedy about a sex worker who becomes entangled with the family of a Russian oligarch, led the Gotham Awards, picking up four nominations, including a nod for best feature.

“Nickel Boys,” the story of two African-American teens who are sent to an abusive reform school, and “I Saw the TV Glow,” a psychological horror film about high schoolers who begin to lose touch with reality, were close behind with three nods apiece.

“Nickel Boys” will vie for best feature alongside “Anora.” Other nominees for the top prize include the erotic drama “Babygirl,” the black comedy “A Different Man” and “Challengers,” a love triangle that unfolds against the backdrop of professional tennis. There were several notable omissions, with critically heralded films like “The Brutalist” and “Conclave” passed over for a best feature nomination. “The Brutalist” did earn two nominations for its star Adrien Brody and for the supporting turn of Guy Pearce.

Awards season is officially underway, according to the Gotham Film & Media Institute, and “Anora,” “Babygirl,” “Challengers,” “A Different Man,” and “Nickel Boys” are among the films in competition at this year’s Gotham Awards.

On Tuesday, the membership-based, non-profit independent film group announced its nominees for the 2024 Gotham Awards, the “start of the annual awards season” according to press materials. “Anora” led with four nominations, including Best Feature, Best Lead Performance for Mikey Madison, Best Supporting Performance for Yura Borisov, and Best Director for Sean Baker.

The other Best Feature nominees included “Babygirl” (which landed Nicole Kidman a nomination for Best Lead Performance), “Challengers,” “A Different Man” (which also received recognition for Adam Pearson in Best Supporting Performance), and “Nickel Boys” (which had two other nominations – Best Director for RaMell Ross and Breakthrough Performance for Brandon Wilson).

Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers from Orion/Amazon MGM was nominated for Best Feature. The studio’s Nickel Boys by RaMell Ross had noms for Best Feature and Best Director.

The indie-centric awards last year removed a longstanding budget cap on eligibility, an opening for bigger budget studio and streamer fare to submit for consideration.

A24 films were everywhere with multiple nominations for Babygirl, I Saw The TV Glow, Sing Sing and A Different Man. The Brutalist, Janet Planet and Love Lies Bleeding had noms as well.

The October noms and early December ceremony are industry bellwethers, coming at the start of awards season in the crush of fall festival buzz.

The Forge has acquired North American rights to Guan Hu’s Cannes award winner “Black Dog,” and worldwide distribution rights to Alison Tavel’s “Resynator,” which won the best documentary audience award at South by Southwest.

The Forge also recently acquired North American rights for French horror-comedy “The Balconettes,” which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and plays the American French Film Festival in Hollywood next week.

“Black Dog,” which won Un Certain Regard’s prize at Cannes 2024, follows ex-offender Lang (Eddie Peng) who “returns to his hometown where he forms an unexpected bond with a stray black dog. Both outcasts, they embark on a transformative journey together,” according to an official logline. The film grossed more than $2.4 million after just two days at the Chinese Box office.

But the success of its “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” the actual #3, remains a nice counterbalance.

Tim Burton’s sequel, at $275 million in U.S./Canada gross, came out as a PVOD rental only 32 days after release (unusual these days for a WB hit — “Dune Part 2” and “Godzilla Vs. Kong” had 47 day windows). But even without specific figures, it’s clear that it got a lot of action.

It replaced Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the year’s second biggest grosser (more than double “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”) after the Marvel film’s first week out. And it likely wasn’t close — it is #1 at Fandango, which calculates by revenue. With “Deadpool” costing 25 percent more to rent ($24.99 to $19.99), that means it had a clear victory.

This gives the film a three-week total of $226.8 million. In second place, Paramount Pictures saw Transformers One debut with $25.0 million mounting a substantial challenge to the dominance of Beetlejuice Beetljuice. This pushed Speak No Evil to third place this weekend where it added $5.9 million to bring its two-week total to $21.5 million for Universal Pictures.
