Stefan and Damon are angry when they find out that Elena has taken matters into her own hands in the battle against Klaus. Tensions also rise between the brothers over the best way to protect her.

Revived by Elena, who even hands him the dagger as proof of alliance, Elijah explain to her how his Bulgarian family became the first, still most powerful vampires, but witches prevented them from becoming invulnerable. He loved Niklaus 'Klaus', being his brother, but had to turn against him in the end. They ingeniously staged the moon curse in order to get vampires and werewolves to help look for a cure for Klaus's real curse, doubly monstrous genes. Alari-Klaus toys further with Katherine and instruct Maddox to fetch a new body so he can leave Ric's. Stefan bickers with Damon over how to protect Elena, who shocked both of them but also prevents a fraternal fallout.—KGF Vissers

Elena removes the dagger from Elijah to revive him. Then she gives the dagger to him to prove that she will not betray him again and she asks Elijah to help her kill Klaus. Stefan and Damon discover what Elena did and Stefan calls her, but she asks to be alone with Elijah. Damon delivers vervain to Katherine to keep her from being further compelled by Klaus. Meanwhile, Elijah discloses to Elena that Klaus is his brother and the curse is fake. Stefan and Klaus, possessing the body of Alaric, tell Jenna about the vampires, werewolves and moonstone curse, but she doesn't believe them. When Elena confirms that everything is true, she realizes that she is the only member of the family who didn't know the truth. Elena returns to Elijah and he tells her that Klaus is a hybrid of vampire and werewolf, and he wants to build his own bloodline. Further, a witch could only kill Klaus in the full moon during the transition. Stefan and Damon are furious when they discover that Elena has defied them both to make a new ally and take control of the plan to out-maneuver Klaus. Disagreement over how to protect Elena leads to growing tension between the Salvatore brothers. Meanwhile, Stefan has his hands full trying to keep a confused and frightened Jenna safe. Flashbacks to 1491 reveal Katherine's introduction to Elijah and Klaus, along with the origin of the moonstone curse. Elena learns shocking new information about Klaus' motives.—CW Publicity

Elena (Nina Dobrev) waits in the basement for Elijah (Daniel Gillies) to come back from the dead to the, uh, dead, after she pulled the white ash dagger out of his chest. Suddenly, he wakes up and sees her. He thinks she's Katherine (Nina Dobrev).

England, 1492 Elijah talks to a man at a party about a mystery girl. Katherine meets Elijah.

Back on the cellar floor, Elijah doesn't seem happy to be upright. He says he can't breathe. Then he says he can't be in the house. She realizes he's not invited in. He races for the door.

At the doorway, he stands outside and she doesn't let him in. She promises to tell him what's going on but doesn't want the boys to hear. He asks if he can trust her. She hands over the dagger.

Stefan (Paul Wesley) wakes up alone and goes in search of Elena.

Damon (Ian Somerhalder) makes out with Andie Starr (Dawn Olivieri), girlfriend-reporter. She leaves.

Stefan sees the door to the basement open and finds the cellar empty.

Still stuck with Klaus-in-Alaric's body, Katherine watches as he sends his witch off to get his body. The full moon is coming and he's ready to break the curse. He says it has to be broken here, because it's the birthplace of the doppelganger.

Katherine assures him Elena will die before she lets anyone she loves get hurt. He's counting on it.

Elena drives around with Elijah. She wants his help. She knows he needs her help to kill Klaus (Joseph Morgan). Stefan calls. He doesn't think she can trust Elijah. She tells both Stefan and Elijah that Elijah is an honorable man and she can trust him.

Stefan tells Damon they should let Elena try it her way to avoid Bonnie sacrificing herself. Naturally, Damon has other plans.

1492 Katherine waits for the party's host with Elijah. He arrives. It's Klaus.

Elijah and Elena visit Carol Lockwood. He compels her to help them. He tells Elena he got Carol off vervane before they killed him.

Jenna (Sara Canning) calls Stefan. She's back in town and has lunch plans with Ric/Klaus. Stefan goes over to explain.

Damon pouts, pretending he's following Elena's lead. Then with Stefan gone, he tells Andie Starr they're going rogue.

Elijah doubts Klaus would have killed Katherine. He says it'd be "too easy" for her. Even though he wants Klaus dead, he wants to make Katherine pay.

1492 Klaus calls Elijah "brother."

Present day Yea, that's right. Elijah and Klaus are brothers. Elena processes.

At Ric's, Katherine hears voices outside the door. It's Damon and Andie. Katherine can't open the door or respond.

Damon breaks the lock. They see Katherine.

Stefan arrives at Jenna's. But Ric/Klaus is already there.

At the Lockwoods, Elijah explains there's a family of originals. He has six siblings. They were born human, but are the original family of vampires.

Damon has vervane which might allow Katherine to break free of Klaus's compulsion. But first he asks why she double crossed them with Isobel. "I didn't think you could stand a chance against Klaus, I was looking out for myself," she says. He gives her the vervane and she chokes it down.

"You owe me, and I will collect," he tells her as they leave.

Jenna wonders what is going on with Ric (Matthew Davis) as he acts all weird in her kitchen. He asks if she believes in vampires. He says he's obsessed with them. He mentions the Aztec curse on vampires and werewolves.

Jenna thinks he's joking. Stefan takes his point as he says vampires would do anything, kill anyone to break the curse.

Elijah tells Elena nothing can kill an original except the wood from one tree -- the white ash. Sun doesn't hurt originals.

1492 Elijah and Klaus look over some of Klaus' parchment scrolls. Elijah says the Aztec drawings were Klaus' best work.

Present Day Elijah explains they planted clues about the curse to get vampires and werewolves looking for moonstones and dopplegangers. "The curse of the sun and the moon is fake," Elijah says. "What?" Elena says. WHAT?!

Back at Jenna's, she's had enough and tells Ric to get out. He doesn't leave and eyes a knife. Stefan grabs the knife and holds it to Ric/Klaus' throat. Stefan vamps out at Jenna to scare her into leaving.

Ric/Klaus dares Stefan to kill him, saying he's determined to break the curse. Stefan just kicks him a few times instead and runs.

Elijah explains the sun and moon curse might be fake. There is, however, a curse much worse. It is placed on Klaus. He's been trying to break it for 1,000 years and Elena is his only hope.

Stefan calls Elena. She runs off to see Jenna, promising to return.

1492 Elijah playfully chases Katherine through the grounds. She says Klaus is charming, but she doesn't think he really cares about her. She makes a pitch for true love. He says he doesn't believe, yet he's clearly sweet on her.

Klaus walks up, wearing ripped and bloody clothes. He takes Katherine away.

Jenna freaks out at the Salvatores. Elena arrives and tells her vampires are real. And there you have that. Elena explains she kept her in the dark to protect her. Jenna's upset to realize everybody else knows.

Stefan listens in the other room and clearly feels awful.

Later, Elena reports to Stefan that Jenna is in shock. She tells him she has to go back to Elijah.

Damon returns and stops her. Stefan gets in his way. The brothers stare each other down.

Back at Ric's, Katherine rocks out alone and boozes it up. Ric/Klaus returns.

She offers him a drink. He compels her to sit down and shut up.

Klaus' witch returns with back-up witches, including Greta. She asks if he's ready to get out of Ric's body. Another witch rolls in a Klaus-sized steamer trunk.

Elena returns to see Elijah. She asks about Klaus's curse.

He explains Klaus is the son of his mother and her lover. His dad killed the lover and his entire family when he found out. That ignited the war between the werewolves and vampires.

So Klaus is from a werewolf bloodline and is a vampire.

"So what does that make Klaus, a werewolf or a vampire?" Elena asks. "He's both," Elijah says.

But the witches made sure his werewolf side was dormant. He wants to break that curse and become both and sire his own bloodline.

But werewolves heal from silver and an original can only be killed with a silver-tipped white ash dagger, quite the conundrum.

Elijah explains only a witch with enough power can kill Klaus and only during the full moon when he's in the middle of his transition.

But there's one more thing....

1492 Ye Olde Klaus and Elijah prep for the full moon. Elijah says the witches might have a way to spare the doppelganger. Klaus is unconcerned about that. He scolds Elijah for caring about Katherine.

In the present, Elena hears Elijah say the doppelganger doesn't have to die. But back then Katherine took matters into her own hands.

Back at the house, Damon and Stefan gear up for a face off. Stefan calls Damon out for being in love with his girlfriend. Stefan is OK with that if it means Damon will protect her. "I have the one thing you never will, her respect," Stefan says.

Damon throws Stefan across the room and they start to brawl.

Elena interrupts. Elijah is with her.

1492 Klaus comes in angry, telling Elijah that Katherine ran away. Klaus says he'll kill Elijah if he doesn't find Katherine.

At the house, Elijah tells the brothers he won't hurt them as long as they apologize. Stefan apologizes for his part, saying he was protecting Elena.

Elena tells Damon that Bonnie can kill Klaus and live and she will too. But Damon tells them to go to hell and storms off.

Stefan explains to Elijah that Damon is upset with him and will come around. Elijah of all people gets brother anger.

In his room, Damon is angry to find Andie waiting for him. He told her to leave, but didn't compel her. He warns her he's upset, then chomps down on her neck. She screams and after a bit he stops. "Get out of here before I kill you," he compels her.

At Alaric's, Klaus's witches perform the ritual to switch Klaus back into his body. Ric comes out of it and thinks Katherine is Elena. Then he passes out.

They open the Klaus-sized steamer trunk and out steps Klaus.
