- On the eve of her college graduation, Natalie's life diverges into parallel realities: one in which she becomes pregnant and remains in her hometown to raise her child and another in which she moves to LA to pursue her dream career.
- Tells the story of Natalie, whose life, on the eve of her college graduation, diverges into two parallel realities: one in which she becomes pregnant and must navigate motherhood as a young adult in her Texas hometown; the other in which she moves to Los Angeles to pursue her career.
- On the eve of her college graduation from the University of Texas, Natalie (Lili Reinhart) decides to have sex with her friend Gabe (Danny Ramirez). Gabe is in a band which just got sponsored for a tour. Natalie wants to graduate with honors, move to LA and have a career in making animated movies. Natalie is an artist and has ambitions to make her own movie one day. The next day, Natalie feels sick, and her best friend Cara (Aisha Dee) gets her a pregnancy test. Natalie is sure that she and Gabe used a condom. Natalie loves to plan her life and a pregnancy at this stage is not in her plans. When Natalie takes the test, her life diverges into two parallel realities based on the result.
In the reality where Natalie's test is positive, she informs Gabe, who is stunned and cannot believe that this has happened to them. Gabe says that he will support Natalie in whatever she decides for the baby. Natalie decides to have the baby. Natalie asks Cara to move to LA by herself.
Natalie moves back home with her mom Tina (Andrea Savage) and dad Rick (Luke Wilson), who are less than thrilled, especially when Gabe proposes to her prematurely. Gabe is a history student and has no career prospects other than being a drummer in his band. Natalie rejects Gabe's proposal as they are not in love with each other.
Natalie starts getting bored with her life at home. Meanwhile, Cara has found a job in LA and has found a different roommate to take the room meant for Natalie. Gabe is with Natalie throughout the pregnancy and eventually the baby is born. After her daughter is born, her life is even more tied up in just taking care of the kid and with no identity of her own. Tina explains to Natalie that Post-Partum depression is normal as Natalie is letting go of her old self. Her parents encourage Natalie to still pursue her career in animation while she struggles with the realization that she is a mother.
Natalie and Gabe struggle to co-parent their daughter Rosie. Gabe wants Natalie to move in with him, but Natalie does not reciprocate feelings and tells him to date. Natalie admits to Cara later that she made a mistake by pushing Gabe away. Gabe meets a woman named Miranda, who Natalie exhibits jealous feelings towards. When Natalie goes on a trip to Los Angeles to visit Cara and her girlfriend, she gets a call from Rosie (who is now a toddler) who says she is left overnight with Miranda's sister. On that trip Natalie runs into Jake. Natalie doesn't trust Gabe and later finds out he proposed to Miranda. Natalie throws herself into her career as a therapeutic tool to get over Gabe.
Natalie has a career breakthrough. She gets accepted to the South by Southwest film festival in Austin where she sits on a panel of creators including Lucy and discusses a comic inspired by Rosie.
Natalie and Rosie also watch Gabe's band perform at a bar to catch up with him after five years. Afterwards, she asks him why Miranda isn't at the gig. Gabe tells her that he broke off the engagement because he is in love with her, not Miranda. Gabe and Natalie have a serious conversation about how they would like to develop a romantic relationship for the sake of their daughter and because of their romantic feelings for each other.
In the reality where Natalie's test is negative, she moves to Los Angeles with Cara, and they look to start building their careers. Natalie applies to be an assistant to animator Lucy Galloway (Nia Long). After pining for the job (she attends a party given by Lucy, where she was not invited, just to get Lucy's attention. But she finds that Lucy doesn't even attend these events), the next day she gets an offer. Natalie forms a strong bond with her colleague Jake (David Corenswet) whom she had met at the party and who coached her for the interview with Lucy. They encourage each other to follow their dreams, with Jake desiring to be a successful producer. Jake also believes in making long term plans, just like Natalie.
Natalie and Jake develop a strong romantic relationship (They start dating and have regular sex) and consider moving in together. That is, until Jake receives a year-long job producing in Nova Scotia. They try long distance, but Natalie finds it isn't working for her as Jake is always busy with work and their internet connection is very patchy, so they are not able to do video calls. Cara is revealed to be a lesbian. Natalie knows that Lucy does not see her as an artist, and only just as an assistant. Lucy dismisses Natalie every time she approaches her to show Lucy her portfolio.
One day, Natalie shows Lucy her portfolio, and Lucy gives her some very critical notes, saying her work is unoriginal. She encourages Natalie to quit to pursue other avenues of creativity (& finds her own voice, instead of helping others find theirs), and Natalie does so. She returns home to a friend's baby shower with Cara to find that her life is in a downward spiral in comparison to her friends.
Natalie has a career breakthrough. She gets accepted to the South by Southwest film festival in Austin where her short film is showcased. Natalie sees Gabe's band in a bar, catching up with him after five years. Later on, she is surprised that Jake has traveled to see her short film, despite risking his job with the movie. Lucy sees Natalie's short film and encourages her to reconnect when she returns to Los Angeles.
Jake and Natalie walk the streets together, happy to be reunited.
Both realities converge when each of the couples walk past Natalie's sorority house, where she took the pregnancy test.
In both realities, Natalie walks up to the bathroom, and looks in the mirror, and reassures herself that she is okay.
