Jean-Claude Van Damme prunes bad guys with shears and a smile in the action-packed trailer for The Gardener
David Ayer at an event for Bright (2017)
Tell me you watched David Ayer’s The Beekeeper without telling me you watched David Ayer’s The Beekeeper. Blue Fox Entertainment is getting in on the unsuspecting hero action today with a trailer for The Gardener, starring martial arts legend Jean-Claude Van Damme and Michael Youn.

David Charhon directs The Gardener from a script he co-wrote with Vincent De Brus (The Ballad of Titus) and Sebastian Fechner (A Mighty Team). The Gardener has the official logline: Serge, his family, and their gardener must escape a death list after he uncovers a state secret.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Gardener courtesy of Blue Fox Entertainment:

“Every year, the Prime Minister keeps a secret list of his political enemies to be removed. Serge Shuster, a senior official close to the presidency, finds himself named on the list — meaning he will be assassinated within 48 hours by a team of elite government hitmen.

‘The Gardener’ Review
Image
Stars: Jean-Claude Van Damme, Michaël Youn, Nawell Madani, Carla Poquin, Jérôme Le Banner, Matthias Quiviger, Kaaris | Written by David Charhon, Vincent De Brus, Sebastien Fechner | Directed by David Charhon

The Gardener (Le Jardinier), not to be confused with the Gary Daniels/Robert Bronzi film, reunites Jean-Claude Van Damme and David Charhon who directed him in The Last Mercenary. And like that film, it’s an action comedy, but with the comedy dialed up a bit higher, and the action a bit more on the brutal side.

This time out, The Muscles From Brussels plays Leo, a man who simply wants to tend to plants on the large estate owned by Serge Shuster Special Adviser to the President of France. Nobody seems quite sure how he ended up with the position, and they think he’s a bit odd, but he does a good job so they’ve let him stay on.

Image
It will be a very merry Christmas for Jean-Claude Van Damme fans. Three months after its release on digital, the action movie icon's latest movie will hit a major streaming platform this month.

Kill 'Em All 2 will arrive on Netflix on December 25. Directed by Valeri Milev and written by James Agnew, the direct-to-video action film sequel premiered on September 24 starring the returning Van Damme as Phillip. Following the events of 2017's Kill 'Em All, Philip is out of spy game retirement, having lived peacefully off the grid as he becomes the target of Vlad, the brother of the first film's antagonist. The movie also stars Jacqueline Fernandez as Vanessa, Peter Stormare as CIA Agent Holman, and María Conchita Alonso as FBI Agent Sanders.

‘Kill ‘Em All 2’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Jean-Claude Van Damme, Jacqueline Fernandez, Andrei Lenart, Peter Stormare, Maria Conchita Alonso, Talia Asseraf | Written by Jim Agnew | Directed by Valeri Milev

Kill ‘Em All 2 picks up seven years after the events of the original, which makes sense since there’s seven years between the films, with Phillip reconnected with his daughter Vanessa and the two of them hiding out in southern Italy.

They obviously didn’t do a good job of it, as within the film’s first few minutes they’re attacked by goons working for Vlad Petrovic who is out to avenge the death of his brother Dimitri who was killed in the first film. This puts them on the run, trying to stay alive long enough to deal with Vlad and his crew, and the only way to do that is to kill ’em all.

I haven’t seen the original, and to be honest...

‘The Takedown’ Review: Omar Sy Steps Up in Formulaic Action-Comedy From the Director of Next ‘Fast & Furious’ Movie
Image
It’s easy to see why Netflix wanted to reteam actor Omar Sy and director Louis Leterrier in something, anything, given the popularity of their previous collaboration, the French thriller series “Lupin.” But U.S. viewers may be a tad puzzled by the streamer’s decision to green-light as their follow-up a popcorn movie as nondescript as “The Takedown” — a sequel to “On the Other Side of the Tracks” (“De l’autre côté du périph”), a lightweight 2012 French-produced buddy-cop action-comedy that, whatever its popularity in its home territory, received only (very) limited release by The Weinstein Company in this county.

On the other hand: Leterrier — whose credits also include “Now You See Me” and the first two entries in the “Transporter” franchise — has just this week been given the keys to “Fast X,” replacing the creatively distanced Justin Lin as director for the next installment of the “Fast & Furious” franchise.

Kate Trailer: A Poisoned Mary Elizabeth Winstead Hunts Down Her Yakuza Killers
Image
Netflix continues its new-found love for action movies with a new trailer for the upcoming revenge thriller, Kate. While not much footage from the movie has been revealed until now, the marketing so far has already had action movie fans talking, with many comparing lead star Mary Elizabeth Winstead to other female action movie icons such as Ripley and Sarah Connor. Comparisons which the new trailer certainly helps cement.

Kate stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as the titular character, Kate, an assassin whose world is thrown into disarray when she discovers she has just hours left to live. After finding out that she has been irreversibly poisoned, the ruthless criminal operative known as Kate has less than 24 hours to exact revenge on her enemies and in the process forms an unexpected bond with the daughter of one of her past victims. With such a short space of time to enact her vengeance,...

‘F9’ Tops All VOD Charts While Paramount Slashes ‘A Quiet Place Part II’ Price to $4.99
Image
“F9” (Universal/$19.99) is #1 on all four VOD charts we follow. It leads both on FandangoNow and Vudu, which list by rental revenue, and iTunes and Google Play, which rank by volume of renters. That suggests total dominance of home interest, but there’s a big caveat with “Jungle Cruise,” which opened #1 at the box office. It’s also available on Disney+ for $29.99 and the studio reported worldwide PVOD revenue of over $30 million for its first weekend. How much of that came from the U.S.is unclear, but the guess is most since VOD penetration is still lacking overseas.

Universal typically allows three weeks before opening the PVOD box office, but “F9” is the studio’s first title to wait five weeks. It grossed over $50 million on its opening weekend and under Universal’s agreement with theaters that meant a minimum 31 days for VOD.

“A Quiet Place Part II” made...

‘The Last Mercenary’: Jean-Claude Van Damme Delivers Fun Action-Throwback
Image
Photo: ‘The Last Mercenary'/Netflix An Action Hero Returns Released to Netflix subscribers this week comes French film from writer and director David Charhon, ‘The Last Mercenary’. The film stars 90s action hero Jean-Claude Van Damme as a mysterious former secret agent who must come out of the shadows in an effort to save his son who is falsely accused of arms dealing and drug trafficking. The film harkens back to the fun action films of the 80s and 90s delivering over-the-top action paired with absurd situations and entertaining characters. ‘The Last Mercenary’ knows exactly the kind of film it intends to be and, generally, delivers well on the promise of its premise. The film is a ridiculous, hectic, action-filled ride that audiences grew to love in the 1990s and will no doubt inspire nostalgic feelings as one of Hollywood’s greatest action stars, Jean-Claude Van Damme, graces audiences screens once more.

‘The Last Mercenary’ Review: Jean-Claude Van Damme in a Netflix Thriller…That’s a Dubbed French Action Comedy? Mon Dieu
Image
During the closing credits of “The Last Mercenary,” we see a montage of Jean-Claude Van Damme in the various getups he wore during the movie (a fuzzy beard; a mustache and Yankees cap; a blond wig; a Bond tuxedo; drag). The film presents this cavalcade of mostly routine disguises with wide-eyed affection, as if it were showing us Peter Sellers in his “Pink Panther” prime. It’s all part of the delusion that the makers of “The Last Mercenary” (who are French) are apparently under: that Jean-Claude Van Damme is no mere action star — that he’s a stylish comedian, an icon of such ironic charisma that we’d follow him anywhere, even through the paces of a maladroit caper movie like this one.

Van Damme was always a good-looking bruiser, sleeker than those other martial-arts poster boys Chuck Norris and Steven Seagal. He’s 60 now, which in our world...

Jean-Claude Van Damme Is Back to Kicking Ass in 'The Last Mercenary' (Video)
Jean-Claude Van Damme in Senza tregua (1993)
Everybody’s favorite high-kicking, Belgian action hero, Jean-Claude Van Damme, is back in “The Last Mercenary.” The team behind the throwback action flick was on-hand (virtually) to debut an exclusive sneak peek from the Netflix movie at San Diego Comic-Con.

The new scene was introduced by Van Damme and the film’s writer-director David Charhon at Comic-Con at Home Saturday afternoon.

The clip begins with a hooded man bound to a chair in a dingy room. What the incoming soldiers don't see, however, is Richard (Van Damme), posed in his signature splits on the ceiling. He leaps down and disarms them with unsurprising ease and frees the prisoner. Richard ends up having to wheel the clumsy prisoner out of the building on a gurney before leaping out of a window to complete the rescue mission -- only after punching out some more soldiers for good measure though.

Richard, a former...

From ‘The Walking Dead’ to ‘Star Trek,’ the Buzziest Panels for Comic-Con ‘At Home’
Image
For the second year in a row, San Diego Comic-Con — the largest fan gathering in North America — has been forced by the pandemic to hold its annual convention as a virtual event. Last year’s Comic-Con@Home was a valiant effort to keep the 51-year tradition alive, but without marquee draws such as Marvel Studios and DC Films, it barely made a blip in terms of social media impact.

This year’s virtual Comic-Con has been scaled down, taking place largely over three days (July 23–25) instead of five. And with Marvel and DC sitting out once again, Comic-Con@Home promises to be a far more modest event than the gargantuan convention that’s drawn more than 130,000 attendees to San Diego every summer.

Ironically, the most Comic-Con-y event may be a panel Paramount is holding two days early — i.e. today — at 1 p.m. Pt for the “G.I. Joe” spin-off “Snake Eyes,...

San Diego Comic-Con@Home’s Heavy On TV, Slim On Film Schedule: ‘Snake Eyes’, ‘Dexter’, ‘Army Of Thieves’, ‘Stargate Atlantis’ Reunion & Jean-Claude Van Damme

Nothing beats a live Comic-Con with the scream of the audience, the thunder of Hall H, and the social media wattage that shines out of San Diego.

I’ll never forget the first time that Marvel walked the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy from the Hilton over to the Convention Center. The fans went so crazy, you’d think some of The Beatles came back and there was an immediate reunion. Instead, no thanks to the impact of Covid-19, we have the second year of a virtual San Diego Comic-Con.

Paramount’s Snake Eyes: G.I. Origins is the only major theatrical studio offering, although there are Netflix panels for their movies Army of Thieves, the Jean-Claude Van Damme feature The Last Mercenary, and also the indie documentary For Madmen Only: The Stories of Del Close, about the Chicago comedy improv guru.

Star Media Ramps Up International Co-Pros, Sets Sights on Global Market
Image
In the 15 years since its founding, Star Media has grown into an international media group and distribution powerhouse, with a catalog boasting more than 7,500 hours of content available in more than 60 countries worldwide. But the company remains true to its roots as a production house, and its focus is still on the production of high-end content with an emphasis on series that boast both local and international appeal, according to Star Media president Vlad Riashyn.

The company’s portfolio of local content includes more than 65 series and feature films. Currently in production is a Russian-language adaptation of the hit Israeli crime drama “Kvodo,” whose American remake, “Your Honor,” starring Bryan Cranston, aired on Showtime. The series follows a powerful judge whose son kills a motorcyclist in a hit-and-run accident. When the victim turns out to be the son of a local mafia kingpin, the judge and his son find themselves...

It has now been confirmed that Sweet Girl will premiere on the streaming service on August 20, 2021 meaning that audiences do not have to wait too much longer to see the Aquaman star exact his vengeance.

Avenge the one you lost. Protect the one you love. Sweet Girl is coming to Netflix August 20, 2021. #GeekedWeekpic.twitter.com/8ekSDXxnOo

— Netflix Geeked (@NetflixGeeked) June 7, 2021

The new images show hulking actor Jason Momoa running around while looking deeply concerned, and likely out of his depth, as he attempts payback. Seeing the usually intimidating Momoa thrown into a situation that he can't handle should prove to be a nice change of pace for both the actor and audiences, making Sweet Girl one to look out for.

Blood Red Sky Trailer Puts Vampires on a Plane for a Transatlantic Blood Bath
Image
It's vampires on a plane in the first trailer for Netflix's upcoming suspense movie, Blood Red Sky, which finds a woman with a mysterious illness who must fight to protect her son when terrorists take over her plane. Of course, because this is a high-concept horror movie, the illness can only be vampirism of zombie-infection, thankfully (?) it's the former, with the woman unleashing the inner monster she has fought to hide.

The deliciously high concept behind Blood Red Sky should help take cinematic vampires to dizzying new heights, with the vampire on a plane no doubt causing all manner of bloodshed and chaos at 30,000 feet. The claustrophobia of the cabin is presented well in the footage, as we feel the walls closing in on the kidnapped passengers. Of course, this will take a violent turn of a different nature when the vampire is released, quickly turning the terrorists from predators into prey.

Kate Teaser: Mary Elizabeth Winstead Gets Revenge on Netflix This Fall
Image
The first footage from Netflix's upcoming action flick Kate has now exploded online, with Scott Pilgrim vs. the World star Mary Elizabeth Winstead shooting up a storm on her quest for revenge. Make no mistake, the bad guys are definitely going to know she was here. Waiting patiently above her victims like a floating avenging angel, the short clip shows Kate expertly dispatching with her prey, picking them off from above like fish in a barrel. In fact, she makes it look even easier than that.

Shortly after the teaser arrived, it was announced that Kate is officially R-Rated. The reasons are simple. The action thriller will feature, "Strong bloody violence and language throughout." For action fans hoping to see some killer moves, this is quite promising.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead stars as the titular character in Kate, about an assassin whose world is thrown into disarray when she discovers...

The Last Mercenary Trailer Brings Jean-Claude Van Damme to Netflix This Summer
Image
It seems these days that you really can't stop the action heroes of the '80s and '90s, even when they are almost at an age many would be more than ready to put their knife-strapped boots up and relax. One of the action genre's best known names is back in a new comedy thriller next month on Netflix. Jean-Claude Van Damme leads The Last Mercenary, which will premiere July 30th on the streaming platform. Today, Netflix put out the trailer, which seems to show that even at 60, the Muscles From Brussels is not ready for a nice quiet life of gardening just yet.

The official synopsis of Van Damme's first movie in two years, reads, "Richard Brumère, aka 'La Brume' ('The Mist'), a former French secret service special agent turned mercenary, is back in the saddle as the immunity he was granted 25 years earlier for his son Archibald is lifted.

Jean-Claude Van Damme Strikes Back in 'The Last Mercenary' Trailer
Jean-Claude Van Damme in L'ultimo mercenario (2021)
"Life is one long op." Netflix has launched the first official trailer for a new French action film called The Last Mercenary, aka Le Dernier Mercenaire in French, from filmmaker David Charhon. This new Jcvd action comedy is dropping on Netflix right away at the end of July this summer. A mysterious former secret service known as "La Brume" (or "The Mist") agent must urgently return to France when his estranged son is falsely accused of arms and drug trafficking by the government, following a blunder by an overzealous bureaucrat and a mafia operation. Jean-Claude Van Damme stars as the father who must come back to France and save his son, along with Alban Ivanov, Assa Sylla, Samir Decazza, Patrick Timsit, Eric Judor, and Miou-Miou. Not sure why Jcvd is wearing so many goofy disguises in this, but it looks like some throwaway fun. The only thing that really makes...

The Last Mercenary trailer: Jean-Claude Van Damme kicks ass for Netflix
Image
Legendary badass Jean-Claude Van Damme is a man of many faces (and wigs) in the first trailer for Netflix's The Last Mercenary (Le Dernier Mecenaire). It's been a hot minute since I've seen Jcvd really let loose and take center stage like he's meant to do in Netflix's new action film. If you ask me, this trailer has got it all:…...

‘The Last Mercenary’ Trailer: A New Jean-Claude Van Damme Actioner Hits Netflix On July 30
Image
When it comes to aging action stars, the once-mighty tend to fall very hard; in the case of Jean-Claude Van Damme, oh how the mighty have fallen. After 2008’s “Jcvd” was a hit on the 2008-2009 festival circuit for its sly metafictional take on the actor, it looked like Van Damme’s star wasn’t in total descent. Instead, the actor evolved into something else entirely in that film: an endearingly self-aware performance that transformed van Damme’s inherent limitations into strengths.

Amazon Prime‘s “Jean-Claude Van Johnson” attempted to tap into Van Damme’s star power in a similar way to poor results; the show lasted only one season.

Jean-Claude Van Damme Is Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 1995 Deepfake Video
Image
A new deepfake video shows us what Jean-Claude Van Damme would have looked like in the 1995 Mortal Kombat. In the first live-action movie adaptation of the popular video game series, Linden Ashby was the actor who played the role. Fans of the movie appreciate his classic performance, especially the way he delivers his line to Goro about $500 sunglasses.

Still, it's hard for other fans not to wonder how Mortal Kombat would have turned out if it were Van Damme in the role. In fact, it was Jean-Claude Van Damme himself who literally inspired the character in the original video game. While the Bloodsport actor would star in the Street Fighter adaptation released the prior year, his casting in Mortal Kombat wasn't meant to be, for better or for worse. In any case, you can see what Van Damme's Johnny Cage would have looked like in the video below.
