- In Venice in the 1800's, a British gentlemen befriends a mysterious woman whose presence seems almost other worldly to him.
- An Englishman in 19th-century Venice falls in with a mystery woman and gradually becomes convinced that she is, in fact, a ghost.
This was not the best of episodes to have as a series opener, but it was good enough to make one want to see more of this series. Robert Hardy, who must have done a thousand acting roles for the BBC over the last fifty years, is well cast as the tough, self-assured Englishman whose imperial confidence is greatly undermined by a love affair with a woman who may be a ghost - and who may want him to join her in a world other than the one he knows. The Venetian setting is entirely conveyed by stylized studio sets, suggesting that someone on the show had seen the 1947 movie "The Lost Moment", with which this has a few thematic similarities (although that movie eschewed any supernatural element).
