15 Authors Who Hated Movie Adaptations Of Their Books
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

For an author, getting their book adapted into a film can be seen as a great honor. It's a way for their work to be accessible to a wider audience and hopefully spark or renew interest in the original work. While the common adage is that the book is always superior to the movie, it could be argued that many movie adaptations surpass the source material.

Still, there will always be novelists who wish they never got mixed up with Hollywood in the first place. It's understandable for an author to hate an adaptation if it completely misses the point of the book or is just plain bad. But some authors hate stone-cold cinematic classics for one different reason or another. It might be unavoidable to an extent, with authors feeling absolutely precious over their works than anything else. Even...

Currently, Red One has earned just shy of $125 million worldwide, which pales in comparison to many of The Rock's other projects. One such project it struggles to compete with is 2018's Rampage, a forgotten addition to Johnson's filmography that saw him star alongside Naomie Harris in a jungle adventure epic. Based on Schwartz’s true story, the film will explore his journey from corporate executive to a beacon of hope, as he selflessly mowed lawns for seniors, veterans, and the disabled during the Covid-19 pandemic and started a national movement. In Theory’s Samuel Kochman and Aperture’s Adam Goldworm will serve as producers, with Walden’s Frank Smith and Benjamin Tappan serving as executive producers.

Reba: Cast & Characters
Image
Reba McEntire shines as the sassy and loving mother, Reba Hart, in the defining 2000s sitcom "Reba." The dysfunctional yet endearing Hart family adds charm to the show, with fan-favorite characters like Cheyenne and Van. Some of the Reba cast members, like JoAnna Garcia Swisher and Steve Howey, continue to enjoy active acting careers post-Reba.

After being one of the most popular sitcom ensembles on television in the 2000s, many fans wonder where the Reba cast is now. Reba McEntire might be best known as a Grammy Award-winning country singer, but she also has impressive acting abilities, which scored the icon her own sitcom. The show aired for six seasons from 2002 to 2007, firstly on the now-defunct network The WB and later on The CW, and was one of the defining sitcoms of the early 2000s.

10 Classic Kids Books That Defined Millennials' Childhoods
Image
Classic millennial books' appeal lies in resonant themes like independence, horror, and existential debates. Standout literature like Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and Roald Dahl's books shaped millennial literature. The Harry Potter series and The Secret History were cultural milestones for millennials in terms of changing the course of literature.

A handful of standalone books and book series defined the childhoods of millennials due to their timely themes or popularity in the 1980s and 1990s. These classic kids' books from the 90s are still worth reading for their literary merit as well as nostalgia for the time. Some books were defining cultural moments for young millennials because of their reception when they first came out. Others were released earlier, but are still important to this generation as they are still required reading material and demonstrate some resonant themes.

Some of these books are assigned school reading books people would pick up today,...

10 Classic Kids Books That Traumatized Millennials
Image
Certain classic books traumatized millennial readers with dark themes, emotional depth, and tragic plot twists. Examples of such books include Charlotte's Web, The Halloween Tree, and The Hundred Dresses. While not as shocking, books with tragic elements like Bridge to Terabithia still leave a mark on young readers.

Certain "kids" books stand out in the memories of millennials because they were completely traumatized by reading them for the first time. Like with any other aspect of pop culture, there is a collection of literature that is strongly associated with the era in which millennials grew up, and not necessarily because that's when the relevant books were published. Many classic kids' books from the 90s are still worth reading; likewise, books from an earlier decade were still a part of millennials' (born in the 80s or 90s) lives as children.

Millennials often came into contact with these as required school reading in some cases,...

9 Books I Read For School That I'd Still Pick Up Today
Image
Not every book I read for school kept me engaged, but there are a few that I'd happily revisit today. Classics like Charlotte's Web and The Outsiders tell timeless stories with lovable characters and relevant themes. Revisiting books like Of Mice & Men and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe as an adult gives greater insight into their messages.

Growing up in the 1990s and early 2000s, I never got to read books like The Hunger Games and The Hate U Give for school but I was assigned a few great novels that I'd still revisit today. Traditionally, school reading consists of books that are considered classics, and these don't always lend themselves to an enjoyable experience. While certain books are necessary to understand their time periods or authors, it can be difficult to sell young readers on picking them up for fun.

Fortunately, more and more schools are...

10 Movies That Traumatized Millennials
Image
Traumatizing movies from the millennial era pushed boundaries on appropriateness for young viewers with dark themes and terrifying creatures. Films like "The NeverEnding Story," "Return to Oz," and "The Dark Crystal" fueled anxieties in young viewers with intense visuals and mature storylines. Movies such as "My Girl," "Bridge to Terabithia," and "Charlotte's Web" introduced concepts like death and grief to kids, shaping their experiences.

It's fair to say that the millennials have had it rough in at least a few ways, with one particular example being the vast array of traumatizing movies that were made just for them. Every era of film and TV has its more fringe or niche projects that do something weird. However, the era right around when the millennial generation was starting to engage with movies appears to have an unusually high number of projects that really pushed the boundaries on being kid friendly.

From terrifying practical effects monsters,...

Movie Review: Leo
Image
Leo, the new Adam Sandler animated comedy, is a movie with an identity crisis. A sincere and sweet kids’ movie mashed up with a more subversive adult skewering of that genre, it’s funny and touching in parts but never adds up to a cohesive whole. It’s a fine distraction for family night, but never establishes its own identity.

Sandler dons a curmudgeonly voice as the titular character, a lizard who’s spent his entire life in a terrarium inside a fifth grade classroom. Old and jaded, Leo spends his days critiquing the kids and bemoaning the current state of parents and their children alongside his best friend, an equally cranky turtle named Squirtle, voiced by Bill Burr. When the 74-year-old Leo learns that he’s only one year away from the end of his anticipated lifespan, he plots an escape so that he can finally enjoy the high life in the Everglades.

‘Leo’ Review: Adam Sandler Plays a Literal Teacher’s Pet in Winning Toon From the ‘TV Funhouse’ Team
Image
“Perhaps if people talked less, animals would talk more,” observes one of the human characters in “Charlotte’s Web,” a kiddie classic that serves as both the butt of several jokes and an inspiration for Adam Sandler’s animated “Leo,” an endearing Netflix original that strikes just the right balance between heart and fart jokes.

Basing the way Leo sounds on his squeaky-scratchy, slightly guttural impression of the late Hollywood agent Bernie Brillstein, Sandler voices a crusty old iguana who’s spent three-quarters of a century — practically his entire life — trapped in an elementary school classroom. Leo’s wisdom is largely limited to what’s taught in fifth grade, though he’s observed enough kids over his 74 years that the lizard reckons he’s qualified to advise this crop. Truth be told, he’s cheaper and more consistently helpful than your typical child psychologist.

Sandler’s an old pro when it comes to animation,...

The Saddest Movies, from ‘A.I. Artificial Intelligence’ to ‘Up’
Image
If watching a movie can be compared to taking your emotions for a walk, then sad films challenge audiences with a full-on sprint. Since before Rose said goodbye to Jack or even Bambi lost his mother, tragedy has played a vital role in cinema’s most well-loved stories of every ilk.

For romance, the possibility of heartbreak raises the stakes, pitting lover against lover or, worse still, lovers against time in dazzling depictions of humanity’s enduring quest for security and acceptance. “Titanic,” “A Star is Born,” “Moonlight,” “Brokeback Mountain,” “Up,” and countless other legendary titles have crafted couples so heart-rendingly believable that their joyous reunions and painful partings have provided powerful parallels to our own.

Epic tales of war and survival position total devastation similarly, dangling all-consuming grief and loss like narratively juicy carrots motivating the plodding agony of movies from “War Horse” to “Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey.

Highlighting the Amazon Originals on the TV side this month are two heavy hitters. The first is The Horror of Dolores Roach on July 7. This season will follow angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tenant) as they seek to keep the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) away from both heaven and hell.

There aren’t any Amazon Original movies of note this month and that’s alright as the influx of library titles is more than enough. July 1 sees the arrival of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, No Country for Old Men,...

Jennifer Garner and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Bonded Before ‘The Last Thing He Told Me’ by “Smelling Each Other”
Image
In the opening scene of the Apple TV+ series The Last Thing He Told Me, an adaptation of Laura Dave’s best-selling novel about a woman who teams up with her stepdaughter to track down her missing husband, Jennifer Garner’s character smashes her cellphone. Just before the screen cracks, we see the date: April 14, the exact same day that the first episode premiered. “That was a true coincidence,” says Dave, who served as executive producer. “Someone randomly chose April 17 as the day the story would start, but 17 is my bad-luck number, so I moved it up to the 11th, which made the date on the phone during that flash-forward scene April 14.”

It was a sign of the kismet that has blessed the show from the get-go. The presence of Garner herself is another happy accident; Julia Roberts originally was set to star in the limited series produced by Reese Witherspoon...

10 Non-Disney Movies That Feel Just Like Disney
Image
Family friendly fantasy movies have a long history of big business in Hollywood, and whether the one currently in theaters soars or flops, audiences can be sure there will soon be another to give it a shot. Netflix is trying their hand at the genre with The School For Good And Evil, directed by Paul Feig and based on a series of young adult novels.

One thing fans might have noticed is that The School For Good And Evil, from an aesthetic, tonal, and content perspective, seems similar to a Disney film, and it would be far from the first film to make fans do a double take. Disney is such an influential and recognizable studio that even movies they had no part in will evoke their style perfectly.
