Before she became a successful actress in Suits or engaged to Prince Harry, Meghan Markle was following her moral compass and speaking out against issues – especially pertaining to equality.

Meghan was inspired to change a TV commercial at the age of 11, after having seen a Procter & Gamble commercial that advertised its Ivory dishwashing soap solely to women.

But one of our favorite detail of Meghan's life thus far might be her history of activism . . . which started far before Harry ever knew her name. Following the royal engagement news, a video resurfaced of an 11-year-old Meghan fighting for equality after seeing a sexist TV commercial in true '90s fashion - with a segment on Nickelodeon's Nick News with Linda Ellerbee. Back in 2015, Meghan shared the story about her first foray into women's advocacy at a Un Women's event in Beijing. In her speech, the actress described sitting in class and seeing a TV advertisement for dish soap, which proclaimed "Women all over America are fighting greasy pots and pans.

Giving up her acting career to focus on royal duties and charitable efforts wasn't a big deal for Meghan Markle. The 36-year-old actress has been using her voice to speak out for others since she was a kid.

At just 11 years old, Markle was responsible for shaking up the advertising industry, after challenging the "sexist" language in an Ivory dish soap commercial, which proclaimed that "women are fighting greasy pots and pans."

The actress spoke out about the event during a 2015 speech at the Un on International Women's Day, recalling getting upset after two male classmates joked about how women "belong" in the kitchen.

"I remember feeling shocked and angry and also just feeling so hurt. It just wasn't right and something needed to be done," she said, revealing that her father encouraged her to write letters, which she did to "the most powerful people I could think of."

After spending more than 40 years in journalism — informing generations of adults and children, alike — legendary newswoman Linda Ellerbee is ready to hang up her hat.

Ellerbee on Tuesday announced she will retire after the final broadcast of Nick News With Linda Ellerbee; a one-hour retrospective special titled “Hello, I Must Be Going!” will air Dec. 15 at 8/7c on Nickelodeon.

Before launching Nick News in 1991, Ellerbee anchored and wrote for NBC News Overnight in the early 1980s. Prior to working at NBC, Ellerbee honed her craft as a reporter for the Associated Press in Houston, then as an on-air reporter for CBS.

Let's hear it for the kids! Just one day after the 2012 Presidential election, Nickelodeon announced that kids had in fact, projected President Barack Obama as the winner via the network's 2012 Kid's Pick the President "Kids" vote. What's interesting (and may we say, impressive) is that these pint-sized peeps have now successfully picked the winner in advance of the national election six out of the last seven times. Nickelodeon's online poll is part of the network's initiative to build young citizen's awareness of the election process. And it appears to be working. More than half a million votes were cast and President Obama received 65% of the vote. His opponent, former Governor Mitt Romney, received 35%. And how do these kids make the call? Nickelodeon aired two election-themed Nick News with Linda Ellerbee (TV) specials in order to provide the kids with information. The first special, titled Kids Pick The President: The Issues...

The author of the book Friday Night Lights is a vocal Mitt Romney fan, and at recent campaign appearances the Republican presidential candidate has been using the inspirational phrase from the TV adaptation: “Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.”

But that expression isn’t in the book, and Peter Berg, who directed and co-wrote the screenplay for the 2004 movie, and went on to create the 2006-2011 TV series, has released a scathing letter to Romney, telling him to cut it out.

Did you know that if Mitt Romney gets elected and cuts PBS’s funding, he’ll effectively be canceling his own series? That’s right — unbeknownst to most people, Massachusetts’s ex-governor has been hosting a children’s show on PBS called Mister Romney’s Neighborhood. Late Night with Jimmy Fallon unearthed a clip last night, and it really is a gem.

Romney has a knack for explaining tricky concepts like “wallet” (“Do you know what money is? I’m guessing no, because you’re watching public television”) and “choke,” a.k.a. what his mailman Mr. Obama did at the debate last week.

If Governor Mitt Romney could find half an hour in his schedule within the next five days, Nick News' Linda Ellerbee will meet him any time, anywhere she tells Zap2it.

The presidential candidates have gone on her show, "Kids Pick the President: The Candidates" special since 1992. Immediately after, kids begin to vote online for the president and have chosen the same winner as the general election, except in 2000, when the Nick voters picked Vice President Al Gore.  

President Barack Obama has already taped his segment. Her show will go on, with or without an interview from the Gop candidate, on Monday, Oct. 15. And she would meet with the Republican candidate until midnight on Oct. 14.

Ellerbee began asking both candidates in April, explaining how this process worked and that she needed precisely half an hour with each.

Ann Romney is a big fan of Modern Family — but it seems like her husband’s more of a Friday Night Lights kind of guy. The former governor of Massachusetts quoted the TV series’ Coach Taylor in a speech today, though he didn’t single out Kyle Chandler’s character by name.

Nickelodeon's news outfit Nick News is reportedly "disappointed" that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has declined to appear in the channel's "Kids Pick the President" election special, which airs several weeks before the election. “After numerous attempts by 'Nick News' to get former Governor Mitt Romney to participate in the special, his camp declined saying he was unable to fit it into his schedule,” Nickelodeon said in a press statement.

Evidently the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Award red carpet is now the premium location for breaking news, or at least Katy Perry thinks so, as she's chosen to unveil the title and release date of her first 3-D feature film at the event.

Perry spoke to E! News correspondent Kelly Osbourne, who presumably elbowed out nearby Nick News child reporters to get the scoop, and revealed that “Katy Perry: Part of Me” will be released this year on July 4th weekend. “Go and see it and be a firework,” she added without cringing. As expected, the film will be a concert-documentary showing Perry's quotidian life on and off-stage, giving fans a behind the scenes look at the life of a pop star.

One of the biggest movies at the box office for children last year was "The Smurfs." Taking in over $560 million worldwide, the 3D, CG/live action reboot tossed in references to Aerosmith, "Rock Band," bodily functions and "Midnight Cowboy" (among many others) in a slick and glossy production whose greatest accomplishment was keeping kids in once place for 86 minutes, while harried parents got a moment to breathe. It says something about how much the idea and perception of entertainment for children has changed, that in watching old clips of "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood," the show practically feels revolutionary. Moving at a measured, distinctly unhurried pace, with a man who spoke honestly and directly to his young viewers, even decades later, for anyone who grew up watching the show, Fred Rogers still represents an honesty and integrity in children's programming that simply hasn't been matched. And it's those values of caring, decency...

For those of us who do remember the events of Sept. 11, 2001, it's hard to imagine that anyone wouldn't; but for children who were too young to understand what happened that day, there's Nick News' longtime voice of reason, Linda Ellerbee.

In Thursday night's Nick News special, "What Happened? The Story of September 11," Ellerbee attempts to cut through the "media noise" and clarify the story for children. Ellerbee omitted some of the more graphic images and details, and suggested that kids grab a trusted adult before tuning in.

Though the special was obviously intended for young viewers, the first-hand accounts of people who were children in 2001 and now are older teenagers or young adults gave an interesting perspective on the day.

Tragedies have anniversaries too, and with the terrorist attacks of 9/11 approaching the 10-year mark, networks have scheduled several programs analyzing and remembering that tragic day. Projects include the Steven Spielberg-produced Discovery Channel special Rising: Rebuilding Ground Zero, following the construction of a new 104-story One World Trade Center, and Nat Geo’s in-depth documentary interview of former president George W. The Television Critics Association has announced its 2011 TCA Award Nominations, which include honors for "Boardwalk Empire," "Community," and the final season of "Friday Night Lights."

"Parks and Recreation" is also nominated -- both Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman are nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy. Offerman will host the awards ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles on Saturday, August 6.

"The Television Critics Association's yearly awards are a prestigious event where seasoned professional TV writers offer their choices for the people and shows bringing the best to TV audiences," says TCA President Susan Young. "We do not accept submissions. Nominees represent the TCA's version of the All-Star team and we take great pride in honoring them."

Are You Afraid of the Dark? This is one of my favorite sub-genres that was included in the 30 day horror challenge. A more appropriate question would be "what horror themed TV series did I not like?". So many good ones to pick from. I grew up watching The Hitchhiker which always featured scummy characters getting their just deserts. Or there was Tales From the Crypt which featured slick, old school styled stories, but updated them for modern times with gore and violence. And who didn't just love The Cryptkeeper?!? Even Freddy Krueger got in on the action with a short lived series entitled Freddy's Nightmares which suffered from inconsistency. I grew  up when the horror themed TV series was at its peak with a wide variety of shows to choose from. However, the series I picked reflects upon me as a kid growing up. So I give you.....

The nominations list of 25th annual Imagen Awards has been unveiled on Thursday, July 15. In movie categories, "Our Family Wedding" and "La Mission" are going to compete to be the big winner as the two share the same number of nods with four each.

Both "Our Family Wedding" and "La Mission" are up against each other for Best Feature Film prize. Additionally, their lead actors, Carlos Mencia and Benjamin Bratt, are put among the contenders to win Best Actor award.

The Rick Famuyiwa-directed drama comedy additionally leads America Ferrera to get a nod for Best Actress kudo in addition to helping Anjelah Johnson get Best Supporting Actress nomination. Nickolodeon is poised to enter some unfamiliar territory for the popular kids channel -- rehab.

The network behind SpongeBob SquarePants is set to mine some heavier material than its standard tyke and tween fare when it airs a special episode of its Emmy Award-winning series "Nick News With Linda Ellerbee" on the dangers of substance abuse.

The program, entitled "Kids in Rehab," examines the lives of kids who want to get sober. It will premiere at 8 p.m. Sunday.

Nickelodeon's long-running educational show "Nick News with Linda Ellerbee" is set to tackle kids' allergies on a special episode "I'm Allergic to My World," which will premiere September 27.

In the special, Director of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology at John Hopkins' Children's Center in Baltimore, Dr. Robert Wood, explains the strange ways of allergies, while kids will share their experiences in coping up with the disorder.

Host Ellerbee said, "Kids with severe allergies suffer from more than their allergies; they suffer from being 'different' and, therefore, often feel quite isolated."

"We don't know why there's an increase in allergies, but this increase is real. We hope this special teaches kids who do have dangerous allergies to not be afraid to protect themselves - and kids who don't have allergies to be brave enough to help protect kids who do."...

The Television Critics Association announced nominees for its annual TCA Awards, with the final season of FX's "The Shield" leading the list.

"The Shield" earned four nominations, including program of the year. NBC has struggled in the ratings and critics have knocked some of the network's newer programs, yet NBC led rivals with 11 nominations for "30 Rock," "The Office," "Saturday Night Live" and other shows. HBO also had a fine year, with six nominees and dominating the movies and miniseries category.

For program of the year, critics favored serialized dramas, nominating the final season of Sci Fi Channel's "Battlestar Galactica," ABC's "Lost," AMC's "Mad Men," FX's "The Shield" and NBC's "Saturday Night Live."

For best new program, Fox's "Fringe," CBS' "The Mentalist," HBO's "No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency," HBO's "True Blood" and Showtime's "United States of Tara" made the list.

The ceremony will be held Aug. 1 in Pasadena, and will be hosted by E!

When the "High School Musical" franchise was launched on the Disney Channel, the first few installments did fairly well in the awards derby. The dance-a-thons got tripped up, though, when part three headed to movie theaters as a feature film, forsaking a first run on cable TV like the first two parts. It earned $250 million worldwide, but didn't fare well with awards.

"High School Musical 4" will return to TV and — yikes — not star Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens. Curiously, it may not even include Kenny Ortega, the director of the first three installments. Word is still out on that. Writer Peter Barsocchini will pick up his pen again, though, and its original producers will return.

According to the Disney news release, new stars will be cast as leads and "High School Musical 4" will feature a love triangle "set against the cross-town rivalry between the East High Wildcats and West High Knights.

Amy Poehler's new web series Smart Girls At The Party launched today from On Networks with Mattel's Barbie attached as lead sponsor. The series, announced earlier this fall, had been looking for a sponsor that aligned with its parents and kid-focused audience. While the official launch of the series isn't until Monday, On has gone ahead with a soft launch today. Poehler stars as host along with longtime friend Meredith Walker, a former senior producer for Nickelodeon’s Nick News, and musical lead Amy Miles, recording artist and host of PBS children’s show Lomax: Hound of Music. The 8-episode series was created for young girls and their parents and "aims to help young girls find confidence in their own aspirations and talents." In each episode, Poehler interviews a smart young girl with a unique talent, community interest or point of view.

Update on new mom Amy Poehler's Smart Girls at the Party web series from On Networks. Toymaker Mattel, maker of Barbie and Scrabble, has signed on as lead sponsor for the teen web series. Jen Gregono, Chief Content Officer at On Networks announced the deal today on an panel we attended at Omma Video in Los Angeles. The deal is said to be in the "low to mid six-figures" and includes a commitment for 1 Million views over a two month period. In our last coverage of the series, On Networks was still looking for a lead sponsor. TORONTO -- U.S. TV critics last month gave the Canadian high school drama Degrassi: The Next Generation a trophy for achievement in children's TV, underlining the enduring appeal on Canadian TV for blunt teen series. Degrassi: The Next Generation, which airs on CTV in Canada and Noggin south of the border, beat out fellow Television Critics Assn. nominees SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer, Nick News and Postcards From Buster for the TCA award. The honor marked only the second time a foreign-made kids TV series earned the TCA award in the children's series category. The first went in 1988 to Degrassi Junior High, a predecessor to Degrassi: The Next Generation, when it aired on PBS in the U.S. market.
