John Mulaney, Kathryn Hahn & Sienna Miller Join David O. Russell’s ‘Madden’: The Dish
Image
Exclusive: To no one’s surprise, David O. Russell’s film about legendary coach and broadcaster John Madden is lining up another all-star ensemble as Deadline is hearing John Mulaney, Kathryn Hahn and Sienna Miller are all in talks to join Madden for Amazon MGM Studios.

They join Nicolas Cage, who will portray the iconic sports figure, and Christian Bale, who will play the late Raiders owner Al Davis. When deals close, Mulaney will play Trip Hawkins, who founded EA Sports and was a driving force in behind the Madden NFL video games; Hahn will play Madden’s wife, Virginia; and Miller will play Davis’ wife, Carol. Russell is directing with Escape Artists’ Todd Black producing.

Amazon MGM Studios had no comment.

Production is set to start next month in Atlanta with Russell directing from a script he wrote, following an earlier version by Cambron Clark. Black is producing through...

Robert Pattinson Circling Villain Role In Dune 3
Image
Robert Pattinson and Zendaya are, arguably, two of the biggest stars on the planet right now. The former is DC's Batman, Bong Joon Ho's Mickey 17 (and all the other Mickeys too), and Edward frickin' Cullen for crying out loud; the latter is the McU's own Mj, Luca Guadagnino's Challengers muse, and soon to be seen alongside R-Pattz in Christopher Nolan's currently shooting latest epic The Odyssey. And, if Deadline's sources are accurate, it looks like the in-demand duo may be shooting another blockbuster epic for a beloved auteur together before the year is through. Namely, Denis Villeneuve's Dune 3 — aka Dune: Messiah.

According to Deadline's gossip strand 'The Dish', Villeneuve and Legendary are eyeing Pattinson to play Messiah's shapeshifting antagonist Scytale, a transhuman Face Dancer whose ability to perfectly mimic the likeness and personality of others has wide-reaching ramifications not only for Lisan al Gaib Paul Atreides,...

Michael Jackson Biopic ‘Michael’ Could Be Split Into Two Parts; Release Date In Flux – The Dish
Image
Exclusive: Sources are telling us that Antoine Fuqua’s Michael Jackson biopic Michael, from Lionsgate, with a near four-hour cut, could be split into two movies. That’s an option on the table but not a definite at this time.

When you think of Jackson’s life — from Gary, In, to the Jackson 5, Off the Wall to Thriller, and to his undoing — it’s an epic story worthy of a two parts ala Wicked.

Will the Graham King production make its October 3 release date? Most likely not. But realize there’s a lot of sign-offs here with Universal handling overseas and Japan sold separately. A key factor also for a concert-like movie of this stature is access to Imax screens. King’s Bohemian Rhapsody, which was about another controversial pop star in Queen’s Freddie Mercury, overcame all obstacles and opened to $51 million stateside and crooned to north of $216M U.

Disney Near Deal For Hawaii-Set Crime Pic With Scorsese, Dwayne Johnson, DiCaprio & Emily Blunt: The Dish
Image
Exclusive: One of the biggest pic packages is about to land at Disney, Deadline hears.

This is the pitch for a Martin Scorsese-directed drama that would star Dwayne Johnson, Leonardo DiCaprio and Emily Blunt. The thumbnail description: Imagine Robert De Niro’s Jimmy the Gent character from Goodfellas but as a ruthless Hawaiian crime boss, also based on a real figure, who battled encroaching rivals for control of organized crime on the islands.

Deadline broke the project in February. It is a pricey package given the local and above-the-line star power, and numerous distributors were bidding. This being a decidedly adult film, it fits nicely under the 20th Century banner, home to upcoming films including Deliver Me From Nowhere, the Scott Cooper-directed drama about the existential crisis that led Bruce Springsteen to hole up in a room and generate his seminal Nebraska album. The Bear‘s Jeremy Allen White plays The Boss,...

Netflix Circling Daniel Craig For ‘Chronicles Of Narnia’ Movie: The Dish
Image
Exclusive: While it is super early in the dealmaking process, sources tell Deadline that Netflix and director Greta Gerwig are aiming high for their next piece of casting on their Chronicles of Narnia movie, as Daniel Craig has an offer to join the cast.

Sources stress that it is unknown whether Craig will ultimately come on board, but they do add that he does hold the offer. It is also unknown who he would be playing in the film.

Even with it being early, the studio and Gerwig are clearly gearing up in a big way with production set to start later this year. Deadline was first to report that Charli Xcx was in talks for the role of the white witch.

In 2018, Netflix said it would develop new series and film projects based on C.S. Lewis’ beloved The Chronicles of Narnia series and brought Gerwig on board in...

Adrien Brody Weighing Options Including ‘Evel Knievel’ Project At Paramount Following Second Oscar Win: The Dish
Image
After taking home his second Best Actor Oscar on Sunday night, Adrien Brody quickly is becoming the town’s most popular, and what he might do next is slowly starting to take shape.

While noting that discussions are extremely early, sources tell Deadline that Damien Chazelle and Brody have had discussions about a role in Evel Knievel on Tour, which has Leonardo DiCaprio in negotiations to star. No formal offer has gone out and DiCaprio’s deal remains in negotiations.

Steven Spielberg at an event for The 79th Annual Academy Awards (2007)
Due out in 2026, Steven Spielberg’s secretive film – said to be about UFOs – has begun filming in New Jersey.

Work on Steven Spielberg’s next film, due for release in 2026, is officially underway, with its stars spotted filming outdoor scenes in New Jersey earlier this week.

Local news outlet NJ.com (via World of Reel) has a couple of candid snaps from the production, with co-stars Emily Blunt and Wyatt Russell shown wearing sensible winter coats.

The accompanying report says that the stars were performing a scene which involved “grasping each other’s hands and embracing”, with a smoky gas station providing the backdrop.

The production is shrouded in an unusual level of secrecy even by Hollywood standards. It’s a little over a year away from release and yet we haven’t seen a synopsis or even a confirmed title. At one stage, it was said to be called...

Top Gun: Maverick Duo Joseph Kosinski And Jerry Bruckheimer Reuniting For UFO Conspiracy Thriller
Image
When you've already taken to the skies and put the pedal to the metal for your craft, what comes next? Well, if you're Joseph Kosinski, the adrenalised director behind high flying legacy sequel Top Gun: Maverick and upcoming, asphalt chewing Brad Pitt vehicle F1, then the answer is... er... aliens. Naturally. Yes, THR are reporting that Kosinski is gearing up to reteam with his Maverick producer Jerry Bruckheimer on a UFO conspiracy thriller that's sparked major interest across Hollywood.

According to THR, Amazon, Apple, Lionsgate, Paramount, and Warner Bros. are all locked into a “quickly and aggressively” escalating bidding war for the project, a package that would see Kosinski calling the shots, Bruckheimer on deck as producer, and The Order and King Richardscribe Zach Baylin on script duty. Precious little is known about what the movie entails at this stage, or indeed who'd be in it, but the film has...

Steven Spielberg at an event for The 79th Annual Academy Awards (2007)
Steven Spielberg’s next film delayed from May to June 2026
Steven Spielberg at an event for The 79th Annual Academy Awards (2007)
Steven Spielberg’s latest film, said to include UFOs, has been pushed back from May to June 2026. The Daniels’ next movie has also been shifted.

May of 2026 was beginning to look like a problem for at least one major film release, given that in the space of a month we were due to get a Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian & Grogu, a Steven Spielberg film, and Avengers: Doomsday. The average person only goes to the cinema two or three times a year, so asking them to go two or three times in a month was probably a tall order.

And make no mistake, lots of ‘average people’ are going to have to show up to make these movies work – especially the two Disney behemoths that will need to pull in big numbers to continue powering the gears of each respective franchise.

The next film from The Daniels, makers of Everything, Everywhere, All At Once,...

It is described as a UFO-related blockbuster event film, written by Jurassic Park screenwriter David Keopp based on an original idea by Spielberg. The cast includes Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada), Josh O'Connor (Challengers), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Colin Firth (The Kings Speech), Eve Hewson (Flora & Son), and Wyatt Russell (Thunderbolts*).

Cannes & Venice Film Festival Lineups Start To Take Shape: Tom Cruise Is Mission Possible For The Croisette – The Dish
Image
Exclusive: With one of Europe’s three flagship film festivals approaching half way stage, minds are already beginning to focus on the shape of the next two: Cannes and Venice. The former will be upon us before we know it.

As ever, there is no shortage of anticipated movies in contention. Indeed, one leading producer we spoke to remarked that 2025 is looking like “a particularly tough year, a much stronger year than 2024”. The surprise to us during our research for this piece is just how many big movies look like they will push to fall rather than launch on the Croisette. That’s not to say that Cannes won’t be box office. It remains the gold standard. The importance of both Cannes and Venice as launchpads is at an all-time high. Just look at how many Oscar nominees now start out at those two festivals — five of this year...

Bidders Circling Hot Radio Silence & Paul Giamatti Package About Paranormal DJ Art Bell – The Dish
Image
Exclusive: We are hearing that Amazon and Warner Bros among others have put bids in for a pitch that’s been making rounds from the Radio Silence team with Paul Giamatti attached to star.

The pitch is a biopic about the late paranormal DJ Art Bell, who would broadcast his radio show from his home studio 65 miles west of Las Vegas, fielding unscreened telephone calls in a five-hour show on Knye-fm called Coast to Coast.

Guests would offer up eyewitness stories on Bell’s show about alien counters, past lives, time travel and more X-File-like situations. His 2018 New York Times obit noted that Bell claimed he and his wife spotted a “150-foot-long triangular craft” above their car one night before it disappeared.

In Coast to Coast‘s heyday in the 1990s, it would pull in around 10 million listeners.

Spider-man Star Tom Holland Will Reportedly Play The Lead Role In Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey
Image
Following weeks of rumor and speculation, we recently got word that Christopher Nolan's next movie will actually be an adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey, and the acclaimed filmmaker has assembled a very impressive cast of A-list talent, including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron.

"Christopher Nolan’s next film The Odyssey is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand-new IMAX film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026," said Universal Pictures in a statement when the project was announced.

The initial trade report noted that Damon was set to play the main character (Odysseus, presumably), but Deadline is now reporting that Holland will actually lead the ensemble. Whether this means that the Spider-Man star is playing a younger take on Odysseus is not clear,...

The Most Experimental Steven Spielberg Movie We Will Never Get To See: It Starred Chris Hemsworth, Anne Hathaway in a Terminator-Style Documentary Film
Image
Since The Terminator’s monumental success, the concept of robots going rogue has been a mainstay in the realm of sci-fi. In 2010, it was announced that Steven Spielberg was set to adapt Daniel H. Wilson’s Robopocalypse, which took an experimental approach to this sci-fi trope. While the best-seller tackled a similar subject of robots going rogue, it was the book’s narrative structure that caught the eyes of many.

Moreover, even before the book was published, Spielberg was on board to direct an adaptation, based on a screenplay by Drew Goddard, which would’ve starred Anne Hathaway and Chris Hemsworth.

'It’s Great Because It's an Original': Steven Spielberg's New UFO Movie Hyped By Writer David Koepp
Image
Steven Spielberg is set to return to the science fiction genre for the first time since 2018's Ready Player One with The Dish, a new movie written by David Koepp. The screenwriter recently opened up about The Dish and why fans should look forward to the new Spielberg feature.

Koepp briefly touched on collaborating with Spielberg on his new movie, The Dish, while speaking with TheWrap about the 25th anniversary of his movie Stir of Echoes (which he wrote and directed). "I am so not allowed to say anything," Koepp said, joking that "I think deep down, it bothers Steven that I’ve read the script." The screenwriter also confirmed a recent production report stating that The Dish, which is the movie's working title, would begin production in February 2025, with principal photography scheduled to take place in Atlanta, Georgia.

Universal Pictures announced, “Christopher Nolan’s next film The Odyssey is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.”

The Odyssey chronicles “the ten-year journey of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, back to his home after the fall of Troy,” according to GoodReads. Homer wrote it around the 8th or 7th century BC.

Tom Holland, who is starring alongside many A-Listers, previously said he didn’t know what the movie was about.

“To be perfectly honest, I don’t really know what it’s about,” Tom told The Dish podcast. “I’m super excited, but it’s been pretty quiet about the project.

Tom Holland Knows Next-To-Nothing About Christopher Nolan's New Movie
Image
Perhaps the only thing more exciting about a new Christopher Nolan film is the buildup and speculation leading up to that inevitable release date. The excitement in the air about Nolan's next film is only accentuated by the massive success of Oppenheimer, which led to Nolan's first Best Picture and Best Director win. The acclaimed director is more of a household name than ever, making his currently untitled 2027 project at Universal all the more alluring to fans.

The only details that have been released about the project are casting news. The movie project has already assembled an impressive ensemble with the likes of Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Zendaya on board to star alongside Tom Holland. When asked if he knew anything about the project on The Dish podcast, he let listeners know the disappointing news that he knew about as much about the film as anyone else does,...

During an interview on The Dish podcast, Holland revealed he remains in the dark about Nolan's planned event film despite joining the cast in October. According to the Marvel Cinematic Universe star, Nolan has been "pretty quiet" about the movie, though he's eager to work on the project with the Oscar-winning helmer. "To be perfectly honest... I don't really know what it's about," Holland said. "I'm super excited, but it's been pretty quiet about the project. I met with [Nolan] and it was awesome. Christopher Nolan Only ‘Loosely Pitched’ His New Movie to Tom Holland During Casting Meeting: ‘To Be Honest, I Don’t Really Know What It’s About’
Image
Tom Holland is set to film Christopher Nolan’s new movie in 2025 alongside Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Charlize Theron and more. But the “Spider-Man” actor remains mostly out of the loop for now on what he will actually be filming. Clues Point To Jamie Lee Curtis Succeeding Angela Lansbury In ‘Murder, She Wrote’ Movie – The Dish
Image
Exclusive: Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis is the top choice to star in the Murder, She Wrote movie coming together at Universal, Dish hears. No deal yet, but we here she’s looming likely to play the Jessica Fletcher role popularized by Angela Lansbury in the hit series that ran 12 seasons on CBS series.

Script is by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, the duo behind the Craig Gillespie-directed drama Dumb Money, about the GameStop short squeeze of 2021. Murder, She Wrote is being produced by Lord Miller and Amy Pascal.

Now, it’s early, but this makes a great deal of sense. Whodunits are hot, from the Knives Out trilogy with Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc, to the Hercule Poirot mysteries with Kenneth Branagh that began with Murder On The Orient Express. Just as hot is the career second wind of Curtis, who has come so much further than...

Joseph Quinn Potentially Set To Play George Harrison In Sam Mendes’ Beatles Biopics
Image
Having won our hearts as misfit rocker Eddie Munson in Stranger Things back in 2022, Joseph Quinn has gone from strength to strength. This year alone, the London born actor has lit up our screens in the likes of Hoard, A Quiet Place: Day One, and, most recently, Ridley Scott's swords-and-sandals sequel Gladiator II. And by the sound of it, Quinn may not be done working with his Gladiator co-star Paul Mescal just yet. Yes, just a day after we learned that Mescal is set to play Paul McCartney in Sam Mendes' upcoming quartet of Beatles biopics, tonight Deadline are reporting that Quinn will be picking up his axe once again to play George Harrison alongside him.

Now sadly, this bit of casting for Mendes' Fab Four features isn't quite as exciting as Ringo Starr namedropping Barry Keoghan during a Grammys interview or Ridley Scott casually dropping Mescal's McCartney casting...

‘Gladiator II’s Joseph Quinn Tuning Up For George Harrison In Sam Mendes Beatles Films: The Dish
Image
Exclusive: The final piece of Sam Mendes’ The Beatles puzzle is falling in place. The Dish hears Joseph Quinn is the choice to play George Harrison in one of the quartet of movies that Sam Mendes will direct on each iconic Mop Topper.

Sources out of Europe said that Quinn has been seen lugging around a guitar as he shoots Fantastic Four in the Human Torch role. Quinn also memorably had a turn playing rock star with the Metallica tune “Master of Puppets,” quite a death scene in the Season 4 finale of Stranger Things. He’s coming off a turn as the Roman Emperor Geta in Gladiator II, meaning that half of Mendes’ Beatles cast will be made up of Gladiator II stars.

We put this out there because these castings have been impossible to keep the lid on. Ridley Scott let slip in his Gladiator II awards conversation with...

Daniel Craig And Luca Guadagnino Circling Sgt. Rock Movie At DC Studios
Image
20 years after Luca Guadagnino first met, way back in 2004, the Italian auteur and British acting heavyweight are finally about to release their first film together, William S. Burroughs book adaptation Queer. A sensual, desirous affair set in '50s Mexico City, the movie is pretty much everything you might hope for and expect from a Guadagnino x Craig team-up. And it looks like the creative duo aren't going to leave it another two decades to get back on set together again — though the proposed project for their sophomore film is anything but to be expected. According to Deadline, Guadagnino and Craig are gearing up to step into James Gunn and Peter Safran's Dcu with a movie based on DC Comics legend Sgt. Rock.

Now, before we jump into this one, a healthy pinch of salt is in order — this is not a DC Studios official announcement, but rather an...

Josh O'Connor
Steven Spielberg’s The Dish | Josh O’Connor is the latest to sign up
Josh O'Connor
Josh O’Connor has been recruited for Steven Spielberg’s new film, The Dish, as the ensemble continues to grow.

The cast for Steven Spielberg’s next film continues to expand, with the ensemble sounding more impressive with each new name. Although his involvement was rumoured a while back, it has now been confirmed (via Deadline) that Josh O’Connor has joined the cast of the project, which is believed to be titled The Dish.

Ever since news of the project first broke back in April of this year, the buzz surrounding Spielberg’s next film has it pegged as a UFO movie, returning the filmmaker to the backdrop which he reshaped several times with films like E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind and then years later, War of The Worlds.

O’Connor joins an impressive ensemble that already includes Colman Domingo, Emily Blunt, Colin Firth and Eve Hewson.

Josh O’Connor Officially Joins Steven Spielberg Event Movie At Universal Alongside Emily Blunt
Image
As eagle-eyed readers may recall, back in July we brought you the news that Challengers ace and rising British star Josh O'Connor could star in Steven Spielberg's upcoming event movie with Emily Blunt. At the time, Universal were quick to note that Production Weekly's cast listing didn't constitute official confirmation of anything, and the rumour mill swiftly wound down for a spell. Well, whaddaya know? Now, per Deadline's reporting, we can say for certain that Josh O'Connor not only could star in Spielberg's latest — he most assuredly will.

As Deadline have confirmed, the in-demand actor — soon to be seen in Knives Out threequel Wake Up Dead Man, Kelly Reichardt heist joint The Mastermind, and opposite Paul Mescal in queer romance The History Of Sound — will co-star with Emily Blunt in the movie, whose powerhouse ensemble now also includes Colin Firth, Colman Domingo, and Eve Hewson. Netflix Ad Tier Hits 70M Monthly Users, Nearly Doubling In Six Months
Image
Netflix is marking the two-year anniversary of its launch of advertising by revealing that its ad tier now reaches 70 million monthly active users globally, up from 40 million as of mid-May.

The plan also accounts for more than 50% of new signups in the territories where the advertising option is available, Netflix said.

Given the price point of $7 a month in the U.S., which is at the low end of the general-entertainment streaming market, the ad-backed tier has been a consistent driver of overall subscription growth. The company has added more than 35 million subscribers during the past year. It does not break out subscribers by tier, and in 2025 will stop reporting subscriber numbers altogether.

The stats and a number of other updates were shared in a blog post this morning by Amy Reinhard, President of Advertising at Netflix. “There has been continuous momentum over the last two years, but we’re...

David Fincher Circling New Squid Game Series At Netflix As Next Project
Image
David Fincher's getting back in the game with Netflix! Or, to be more specific, the Squid Game. That's right, folks — having worked on Mindhunter, Mank, The Killer, and Love, Death & Robots at the streamer already, word on the street is that the American auteur has his sights set on giving the platform's wildly popular satirical K-Drama the English-language remake treatment.

According to Deadline's 'The Dish' column, the long-rumoured US redux of Hwang Dong-hyuk's show is actively in the works at the streamer, and Fincher is gearing up to be the one to develop it. If the series does come to fruition, it'd be the first scripted project to spin off from the original Korean-language play-or-die thriller, which is itself set to continue with a second season dropping on Boxing Day this year before a third and final instalment lands sometime in 2025. Earlier rumours had positioned Fincher...

Image

According to Deadline, Flanagan — who's already got a new Dark Tower series in his Prime Video pipeline — is gearing up to helm an 8-episode adaptation of King's epochal 1974 novel Carrie at Amazon.

Now we bring you this news with a small pinch of salt (word of a Flanagan Carrie series was first shared via Deadline's grapevine column The Dish), but given Flanagan's existing Amazon overall deal and his aforementioned prior successes taking King's work from page to screen, there's enough credibility to these reports to suggest our hype train...

Dune Messiah and Spielberg's New UFO Movie Mistakenly Confirmed by IMAX
Image
There's a chance IMAX revealed Dune: Messiah and Steven Spielberg's new UFO movie during their investor presentation. It could have been a mistake, but once you plant the seed, it's hard to control the bubbling up of rumors that arise from such things. While there's nothing officially confirmed yet, Comic Book and World of Reel detailed the IMAX event in which investors were presented with stats and release schedules, including a presentation that showed the information in question. The document includes titles that would theoretically be released in their state-of-the-art theaters and which could be shot with IMAX cameras, listed as Untitled Dune - Denis Villeneuve by Warner Bros. and The Dish by Universal Pictures.

Of course, those titles refer to Steven Spielberg's upcoming sci-fi film with Josh O'Connor and Emily Blunt and Villeneuve's Dune: Messiah. The weird thing about this is that such information is now gone. Screenshots were made,...
