What do you do when you’ve just tanked a hit franchise by turning an R-rated movie world made for adults into wacky kids flick? Who, by the way, were already into it as it was? Well, obviously, you’re going to take that same franchise and turn it into a TV show also intended for family audiences. Then you’re going to air it at night when kids aren’t watching. If you’ve ever wondered what RoboCop would look like as a TV show that kept the aesthetics and even some of the satire but replaced the interior with more of a Power Rangers vibe? Well, we’ve got over sixteen hours of it to talk about. And every one of them is available on Tubi right now. Here’s the story of how they got there. This is What Happened to the RoboCop TV Series.

In 1987, director Paul Verhoeven created the perfect movie. An R-rated, hilarious and action-packed film with something to say about the world around it. Hell, it even sold toys. You’d never have guessed the inevitable franchise would spawn only two follow up films before being put to rest by 1993’s disastrous RoboCop 3. Fast forward to 2014 and a time when Hollywood’s prime directive is to remake and reboot nostalgic IP. Often to the considerable dismay of at least some of their respective fan groups. To their credit however, Sony Pictures hired a visionary and fearless director perfect for upsetting the status quo. Much like Verhoeven had done more than thirty years earlier. They hired an all-star cast and spared no expense recreating the world of RoboCop. But studios are going to studio. They followed up these great choices by failing to learn from any of the lessons Robocop 3 provided.

Science fiction icon Peter Weller has offered an exciting response when asked about the upcoming RoboCop reboot, which is coming (whether we like it or not) courtesy of Amazon Prime Video. Weller first starred as the iconic character who, of course, is part man, part machine, all cop, way, way back in 1987, and has now stated that he would return for the reboot if the script (and the money) is right.
Following the acquisition of MGM Studios by Amazon back in March 2022, a RoboCop reboot is now in the works, with both a movie and television series now being discussed. Speaking with TMZ recently about his new book “Leon Battista Alberti in Exile: Tracing the Path to the First Modern Book on Painting,” Weller revealed that he would come back for more crime-fighting action and existential crises. He said:

In 1987, Paul Verhoeven and Orion Pictures created RoboCop, a cut-throat, R-Rated, action/sci fi classic and one of the coolest movies ever made. A runaway train on fire destined to create a franchise audiences couldn’t get enough of. The problem that shouldn’t have been a problem is that it happened to sell a hell of a lot of toys. Six years later when it came time to create the third film in the franchise, Orion Pictures altered course, opting for a more family friendly approach. They demanded their newest sequel be more palatable to an audience buying the merchandise of their now household characters. Even included an pre-emptive advertisement on the back of a RoboCop 2 Game Boy box that promises the next RoboCop adventure would be “for all age groups”. It was a course that would jump that same train off the tracks, over the proverbial shark,...

If 1993’s RoboCop 3 lacked any vital element that made the original Paul Verhoeven film a cinematic classic, it was not just the hard R-rated satire. The star of the original 1987 film, Peter Weller, embodied the spirit of what made Alex Murphy/RoboCop a tragic figure. The gifted character actor’s ability to bring humanity to the role of the iconic cyborg was key to the franchise's enduring legacy.

The Chicago Med cast introduced a new face during Season 10, Episode 12.
The February 5 episode was titled In the Wake, and much of the night focused on the overworked nurses.
Nurse Doris (Lorena Diaz) gets asked to take on added responsibilities as Nurse Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) tries to balance the workload.
But Doris makes a huge mistake when she gives a young girl morphine that was intended for another patient.
Dr. Caitlin Lenox (Sarah Ramos) works to save the girl as Doris retreats to a supply closet, where Maggie later finds her crying.
Maggie feels responsible because Doris previously told her she was juggling too many tasks. She seeks to save Doris’ job and says that if Doris goes, so does she.
Lenox backs off wanting Doris fired when Maggie sticks out her neck and agrees to help find resources for the overworked nurses.

The 1987 sci-fi action classic RoboCop is one of those rare perfect movies. Everything about it works just right. The satire. The violence. The characters. The design of RoboCop himself. And it’s difficult to follow up perfection. Which is evident in RoboCop 2, a movie that tried to carry on the story… But ended up feeling tonally inconsistent and a bit scattered. It’s a fun movie, but not on the level of its predecessor. And now, we’re going to dig into just what happened to RoboCop 2.

The 2014 RoboCop reboot had one of the most impressively star-studded casts of any recent big-budget action movie, and it shouldve been successful enough to launch a franchise. Just over two decades after RoboCop 3 was panned as the worst entry in the RoboCop series (and one of the worst movies ever made), the franchise was rebooted for a modern blockbuster age. Elite Squads Jos Padilha took the helm in the directors chair, and original writers Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner worked on the script.

In 1990, the Back to the Future franchise avoided a major trilogy problem that other series often fall victim to. Back to the Future has been widely considered one of the best movies of all time, ever since it was released in 1985. Not only is the original film widely regarded as a classic, its two sequels have also been heavily praised in the decades since they were released. The quality of the Back to the Future franchise is so high that it even avoided a very common problem sequels often run into.

While Back to the Future's sequels didn't manage to outshine the original, they did manage to beat several other notable franchises. Back in 2022, Amazon closed an $8.5 billion acquisition of the film studio MGM, giving them ownership of the studio’s thousands of films and TV shows. Last year, we heard that the six MGM properties Amazon was most interested in doing something with were Poltergeist, Stargate, The Thomas Crown Affair, Legally Blonde, Rocky, and RoboCop… and we’ve recently heard updates on some of those projects, with a Poltergeist TV series finding its showrunners and Michael B. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F brings back the personal element that made the original Beverly Hills Cop successful. Quick Links More Than a Sidekick Subverting All the Familiar Tropes Murphy and Lewis vs the Military Industrial Complex RoboCop's identity crisis and superhuman powers are balanced out by his mortal partner on the police force, Anne Lewis, who protests against Ocp in more traditional ways. The film averts traditional tropes by creating a partnership between RoboCop and Officer Lewis that is deeply empathetic, and even playful, and yet completely non-sexual. Murphy and Lewis contrast the primary antagonists of the series, the Ocp corporation, the two police officers immune to corruption or intimidation in a city where drug-addicted psychos are on the Ocp's health plan.

I don’t think it’s a controversial opinion to state that, of all the RoboCop movies, only Paul Verhoeven’s original 1987 film deserves to be called a classic. However, a lot of us have always thought that the ultra-violent sequel, RoboCop 2, was better than its reputation suggests. I know from our Original Video on the movie that it has more than a few fans, so it’s exciting to reveal that RoboCop 2 is finally getting a 4K Blu-ray release via Scream Factory.
The news was broken by our friends at Blu-ray.com. The company has also licensed José Padilha’s 2014 remake for release. No RoboCop 3 yet. I suppose the company just decided to let that one go, and you can’t really blame them, as it just might be one of the worst sequels of all time.
No news yet on whether RoboCop 2 will contain any special features.

It is 36 years since RoboCop blasted its way onto UK cinema screens and made a splash of epic, gruesome, proportions. With that a cult-like following is born and the film’s influence cannot be overstated.
RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop is an incredibly methodical ‘making of’ documentary that has now set the standard and an exceptionally high one, no less. It comes as no surprise with the success of their recent projects which include Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story and Pennywise: The Story of It.
The documentary oozes passion and is testament to its directors Christopher Griffiths and Eastwood Allen clear love for the film in a project that has been over seven years in the making.
This four part series spans over more than four hours is nothing short of a triumph, it is forensic in its analysis and brings to life the chaos of the RoboCop shoot and does so brilliantly.

With a love of cinema woven into its DNA, The Monster Squad helped indoctrinate ’80s kids to the classic monsters. The generation that grew up watching it on home video and HBO look back on the 1987 film with the same reverence director Fred Dekker had for the Universal monster movies, and now they’re passing it down in a similar fashion. There’s no better way to introduce the next generation than with the new 4K edition.
Conceived as “The Little Rascals meets the Universal Monsters,” the cleverly-plotted film clocks in at a tight 82 minutes. The punchy script by Dekker and Shane Black doesn’t have an ounce of fat on it, save for the casual homophobia, misogyny, and body shaming of the time. Drawing inspiration from Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, human characters offer well-placed levity and a bevy of memorable one-liners, but the monsters are played straight.

The fan-funded, four-part docuseries RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop is available to watch through the Screambox streaming service, and has also received a Blu-ray release. As fans watch the docuseries, it seems the most popular, standout moment is a sequence where weapons master Randy E. Moore talks about interacting with RoboCop star Peter Weller while holding a stack of Oreos. You can watch that clip in this embed:

RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop documentary is getting sequels that cover RoboCop 2, 3, & TV series

The fan-funded, four-part docuseries RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop was acquired by Cinedigm last year, and the company gave it both a Blu-ray release (you can pick up a copy Here) and a streaming release, through the Screambox streaming service. Directed by Chris Griffiths and Eastwood Allen, RoboDoc focuses primarily on the first RoboCop, but does give a nod to RoboCop 2 and RoboCop 3. And if any fans were disappointed that the sequels didn’t get enough coverage, the makers of the documentary have shared some very cool news: RoboDoc is getting its own sequels, which will cover RoboCop 2, RoboCop 3, and even the RoboCop TV series!
The first follow-up will be called RoboDoc Season 2: RoboCop 2, and it’s already expected to be released sometime in late 2024. Then sometime not too far down the line we’ll get RoboDoc Season 3: RoboCop 3 and the TV Series.

RoboCop: Rogue City fills in the gaps left by the third film, addressing the absence of the iconic villain. This character's disappearance in RoboCop 3 is a glaring exclusion that is never explained in the movie's story. RoboCop: Rogue City provides a fitting end for the character, with a narrative that ties into the first and second films.
Though it's not often that movie tie-ins make for solid video games, that's exactly the case with the recent release of RoboCop: Rogue City. A first-person shooter developed by Teyon, Peter Weller of RoboCop 1 and 2 fame reprises his role to take down the criminals and unscrupulous characters of Old Detroit once again. Set after the second RoboCop film, Rogue City picks up where the movies left off and follows the story of James Murphy and his partner, Anne Lewis.

There are different possible endings in the game RoboCop: Rouge City, with end-game decisions changing the outcome. People can be merciful or take vengeance at the end of the game. Some endings in RoboCop: Rouge City make more sense within the game's narrative.
The RoboCop franchise has notoriously struggled to make the transition to Video Games; however, this trend has been shattered with RoboCop: Rouge City. Developed by Teyon, RoboCop: Rouge City is a great game and everything an adaptation could wish to be. Set between the events of RoboCop 2 and RoboCop 3, RoboCop: Rouge City sees the titular cyborg embark on a journey in Old Detroit in which he seeks to clean up the city by taking on gangs and dangerous criminals. Furthermore, the decisions RoboCop makes, have serious repercussions throughout the game, one of the most important decisions comes right at the end - what to do with the final boss.

The first-person-shooter video game RoboCop: Rogue City, which features the return of Peter Weller as the iconic hero RoboCop, is set to be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store this Thursday, November 2nd. To remind us the game is right around the corner, a new trailer has arrived online – but this one only features a brief glimpse of the game. Instead, it’s mostly a live-action short in which we see RoboCop out on patrol. You can watch this live-action trailer in the embed above.
Peter Weller provides the voice of RoboCop in the video game, but of course they didn’t make the 76-year-old put on a costume or sit in the makeup chair for the live-action trailer.

RoboCop: Rogue City arrives later this week, and in anticipation, Teyon has released a new live-action trailer for Rogue City that sees RoboCop ride out once again into the streets of Old Detroit to combat crime. The trailer is admittedly a bit more lighthearted than the grittiness that one would expect from RoboCop, and it’s not Derek Mears under the helmet this time or Peter Weller, but hey, it’s fun!
The story for Rogue City takes place between RoboCop 2 and RoboCop 3, and sees RoboCop (played once again by Peter Weller) caught up in the gang violence in Old Detroit. Making matters worse is that the gangs have decided to throw in with the “new guy in town”. Previously unknown to the police, this new figure is behind a rash of disappearances, a variety of brazen crimes of all kinds and the trafficking of Nuke.

While it's tough to top the classic action films, Robocop: Rogue City's developer Teyon has recreated and enhanced the brand with a stunning and tanky shooter in Unreal Engine 5. After playing through the first few hours of the game as well as Rogue City's Bank Heist mission, it's safe to say that the new-gen game doesn't hold anything back and is a surprisingly accurate rendition of Officer Murphy's brutal Detroit, capturing the dark humor and brutality RoboCop was originally known for.
Although the new game is set to release thirty years after RoboCop 3's release, Rogue City takes place between the second and third film in the classic trilogy. The game's story picks up with the city's leading gangs competing to attract the attention of a rich and mysterious new crime boss, sowing chaos and harming innocents. As soon as players take their first few steps into Detroit's streets,...

We’ll have to wait a little longer before we can start serving the public trust in RoboCop: Rogue City. Developer Teyon took to X/Twitter to announce that the game will be pushed back from its original September release for PC and consoles to a more definitive November 2.
This delay comes after Teyon had shown off a new gameplay trailer, along with several minutes of gameplay footage, at Gamescom last week. Furthermore, no mention of the delay was made last week. The developer also didn’t explain the reasoning for the delay, though given how stacked September and October are with highly-anticipated titles, it’s probably not a stretch to have that as a reason for Rogue City‘s delay.
Rogue City will take place between RoboCop 2 and RoboCop 3, and sees RoboCop (played once again by Peter Weller) investigating a series of crimes in Detroit, along with...

The fan-funded, four-part docuseries RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop was acquired by Cinedigm last year, and the company is currently releasing the series through their Screambox streaming service, with episodes being released on a weekly basis starting today – but if you want to own the documentary on physical media, you’ll be glad to hear that RoboDoc is also set to receive a Blu-ray release in October! On October 17th, to be exact.
Our friends at Bloody Disgusting gave us the heads-up that a collector’s edition Blu-ray release of RoboDoc is available for pre-order through Amazon, and there’s also a steelbook that’s exclusive to Walmart. (It can be pre-ordered through the Walmart website.)
Coming to us from Dead Mouse Productions Ltd and Cult Screenings UK Ltd, RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop is a fully independent retrospective into the making of RoboCop and its cultural impact over the last 30 years.
