The ’90s teen slasher cycle that exploded with the release of Scream feels alive and well here in 2025. The legacy sequel to 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer arrives this July, and a reboot of Urban Legend was recently announced. Recent release Clown in a Cornfield features an opening sequence set in the ’90s, and while upcoming teen slasher Fear Street: Prom Queen is technically set in 1988, it speaks to the continued and growing trend of teen horror, especially of the period variety.

This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to ’90s teen horror that ventures beyond Scream and the popular horror that followed in its wake. They highlight teens in peril with ’90s flair.

Earlier this year, Shudder renewed The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs for a supersized sixth season that was designed to make sure Joe Bob Briggs would be an even more consistent presence on the streaming service throughout the year. Normally, a season of The Last Drive-In would see Joe Bob hosting double features every Friday for ten weeks straight. This season has taken a different approach, having Joe Bob host a single movie every other Friday. Geralyn Marie Betzler worked on several movies throughout the ’80s and ’90s. On her first feature, 1985’s Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, she was credited by her full birth name, but as her screen acting career went on she would take credit as either Geri Betzler or Zoe Trilling – and it’s that second name that most fans seem to know her by. Among her credits are episodes of Guiding Light, 21 Jump Street, and Married… with Children, and the films Amityville Horror: The Evil Escapes, They Came from Outer Space, The Borrower, Dr. Giggles, Night Terrors, Hellbound, and Leprechaun 3 – but her most popular role may be in the 1994 horror comedy Night of the Demons 2, where she stole the show as bad girl Shirley Finnerty. Fans of television -- particularly Star Trek -- are mourning the loss of writer and producer Manny Coto. Coto brought the joy and love of Star Trek back to Enterprise after three rocky years. His passing from pancreatic cancer sends shockwaves through the fandom. Whatever fans thought of Enterprise, it was clear that Coto was a lifelong Star Trek fan who poured that into his work on the series.

Most TV fans know Coto's name from the credits of series like 24 or Dexter, but for kids of a certain age, he's the immortal writer and director of the 1992 Larry Drake horror vehicle Dr. Giggles. He created two short-lived series called Odyssey 5 and neXt, and he had more recently written for Ryan Murphy's embattled American Horror Story franchise. We have some sad news to share today, as The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that writer/director Manny Coto – who is best known for directing the 1992 horror comedy slasher Dr. Giggles (watch it Here) – has passed away at the age of 62, following a thirteen month battle with pancreatic cancer.

Manuel Hector Coto was born in Havana, Cuba on June 10, 1961, then his family emigrated to the U.S. just a few months later. Coto and his siblings were raised in Orlando, Florida, and he was still a child when a fascination with Star Trek inspired him to start shooting short films with his father’s 8mm camera. After attending college in New Orleans, he moved out to Los Angeles in 1983 and started working in commercials. He eventually crossed paths with Tippi Hedren, who worked with Alfred Hitchcock on The Birds and Marnie, and was able to get her to agree to...

Bloody Disgusting has learned this evening that Emmy winning writer/producer/director Manny Coto has passed away at the age of 62 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

THR reports, “Coto, whose childhood love of Star Trek and Super-8 moviemaking led to a 40-year career in film and television, died Sunday at his home in Pasadena after a 13-month battle with pancreatic cancer, a family spokesperson announced.”

Here in the horror world, Manny Coto is known for directing the 1992 slasher movie Dr. Giggles, which recently found new life thanks to a Blu-ray release from Scream Factory.

Manny Coto co-wrote the script and directed the 1990s horror movie, which starred the late Larry Drake as the title character, a night-prowling surgical psychopath.

Drew Dietsch shared his love for Dr. Giggles here on Bd a few years back, writing: “It’s easy to see why Dr. Giggles didn’t click with audiences at the time.

Born in Havana, Cuba, Manuel Hector Coto was one of primetime’s most prominent Latino writers and showrunners. He shared the outstanding drama series Emmy in 2005 for Season 5 of “24,” and co-created “24: Legacy.” Coto also spend four seasons as exec producer of “American Horror Story,” and also exec produced two seasons of “American Horror Stories,” directing the 2021 episode “Feral.”

“Manny was an incredibly beloved member of the 20th Television and FX family for close to two decades,” the studio and network said in a joint statement.

Coto died Sunday in his Pasadena home surrounded by family, a family representative told TheWrap. His death followed a 13-month battle with pancreatic cancer. He worked as a writer, producer and director for nearly 40 years.

According to his family, Coto was first drawn to Hollywood due to his love of “Star Trek” and Super-8 moviemaking. Coto started his career as a writer on “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” in 1988 and on “Tales from the Crypt” in 1991. This love of horror and sci-fi would pave the way for the rest of his career.

It’s no secret that the early 90s are not viewed as a primo time for horror movies. Post-the slasher burnout of the ’80s, pre-the resurrection of the genre thanks to Scream, it was a time where only the truly faithful went to the theaters to indulge in their favorite genre. Dr. Giggles was directed by Manny Coto, who rewrote the original screenplay by Graeme Whifler so extensively that Whifler was able to take the original script and get another movie out of it.. Dr. Giggles ended up with the following synopsis: It has been 35 years since the small town of Moorehigh discovered why Dr. Rendell kept losing his patients: he was ripping their hearts out in a twisted attempt to save his ailing wife. The townspeople stoned Rendell to death, but they never found the young son with the hideous giggle who helped his deranged father perform the operations. Now, over three decades later, Dr. Rendell’s son returns to gain revenge on Moorehigh’s residents, and he’s not shy about making house calls.

A member of the Hollywood Stuntmen’s Hall of Fame, George P. Wilbur is most known to horror fans for playing Michael Myers in both Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers and Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers.

Wilbur is one of only a small handful of actors to play Michael Myers more than once.

He was also a stunt player on Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers.

George P. Wilbur’s career began with stand-in work for John Wayne in the 1960s, and he went on to amass over 100 television and film credits spanning six decades.

Netflix and comic book publisher Dark Horse Entertainment have extended their partnership with a multiyear agreement will continue to give Netflix a first look at its IP for both film and TV. FX recently gave American Horror Story fans a taste of what to expect when the anthology series returns in September, and now the second round of appetizers have arrived via three new teaser videos for Season 6, including one that appears to feature Lady Gaga.

If creepy, crawly things give you the, well… creeps, then the new video titled “Millis Crossing” is sure to send a shudder down your spine. The teaser seemingly focuses on Lady Gaga, who stares up at the camera in peace as a millipede makes itself at home—first in her hair and then nightmarishly near to her lips.

Like, zoinks! Images of Scooby-Doo and the rest of the Mystery Inc. members could be collected like never before. Over the past months, we’ve shared Travis Falligant’s depictions of the Great Dane and the gang taking on horror icons ranging from Freddy Krueger to Dr. Giggles, and now Travis has launched an Indiegogo campaign to get those memorable moments printed in a limited edition “Lost Mysteries” art book.

Travis Falligant has teamed up with Bloody Disgusting and Indiegogo with his recently launched “Lost Mysteries” art book. The fundraising goal is $25,000. A weekly television series following the exploits of Jason Voorhees – how the hell is that supposed to work? The producers appear to have an idea for how to adapt Friday the 13th into a TV show, but I think I might have a few better ideas for how to transform Jason from horror icon to TV star.

The remakes, reboots, reimaginings, sequels, prequels, premakes, adaptations, and spin-offs that rule the big screen are taking over the airwaves like never before.

For horror fans alone "Bates Motel", "Hannibal", "From Dusk Till Dawn", and "Teen Wolf" have been turned into weekly TV shows, and soon "Scream", "Constantine", "12 Monkeys", a series based on the box office stinker Legion, and, yes, "Friday the 13th" will add to the fray.

Another year has come to an end, which means it's time for the Dread Central staff to weigh in with their picks of the best and worst of 2013's horror offerings. We're giving you a full dozen lists this time, and per usual they come in a variety of formats, each reflecting the unique styles of our writers.

No, those aren’t the lyrics to this week’s featured B-Sides. Those are the verses to the nursery rhyme the writers of the slasher comedy Dr. Giggles came up with for kids in the movie to recite because, I guess, if Freddy Krueger can have a nursery rhyme about his evil deeds, then why not a psychopathic doctor with a nervous tick laugh who makes more bad doctor jokes in the course of 90 minutes than a Borscht Belt comic doing a stand-up routine in the Poconos?

Even if you don’t watch or like horror movies you still know who Freddy Kruger is. Same goes for Michael Myers, Ghostface, Leatherface and Jason Voorhees. Yet while these demons and madmen figure greatly into horror mythology there are a whole slew of worthy villains that, either because they starred in lackluster movies or failed to ensure a box-office franchise, have not been given their due. This list will attempt to right those wrongs and shine a spotlight on the unsung monsters, those that give us nightmares and elicit a fear of the dark that Freddy and Jason just can’t do.

Fred Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Leatherface, Michael Myers, and Pinhead have all led to sleepless nights for anyone introduced to their exploits at a young age. Almost everyone I know has had a dream that Freddy was after them or that they were being chased through the woods by Jason Voorhees. Not all horror killers have induced nightmares, though. Some of them have induced plenty of groans, snickers, and ridicule, however. We recognize that not everyone can be terrifying. Some killers are mere caricatures of what we expect to see from a silver screen psychopath. Those that don’t live up to the basic standards of what terrifies viewers are usually good for a laugh, though. And, some of the baddies we are spotlighting certainly provided us with a good chuckle or three. With that said, we are about to pay tribute to seven of the least terrifying horror film psychopaths of recent years.

If you want to feel horrible about your upcoming visit to the doctors, look no further than the movies. I’ve put together this compilation of some of the worst doctors in movie history. I’ll be going to the hospital tomorrow for surgery, so in retrospect, this was a bad idea to make this post. Maybe it’s the fact that these awful movie doctors know about anatomy and can take advantage of that knowledge when it comes to inflicting pain on a victim.

Doctors. Aside from the medical field, they've excelled in so many areas. Literature… Dr. Seuss. Sports… Dr. J. Sugary beverages… Dr. Pepper. Successful doctors are everywhere. And they've certainly left their mark in - and on - the horror genre.

Without a doubt more than a few movie doctors have gone off the deep end, many of them with some pretty colorful results. We've seen our favorite doctors and scientists do all kinds of nasty things to their human victims. Most take bodies apart, but a couple of them even put things back together, most notably Dr. Frankenstein. Deadline Hollywood broke the news that Lionsgate and WWE Films have hired Harris Wilkinson to write their reboot of the campy 1993 horror flick Leprechaun. If you’re not familiar with that name, it’s probably because his only other credits include an unproduced spec script titled Ink that was sold to Paramount and working with Len Wiseman to develop a pilot at Fox two seasons ago that never got off the ground.

Talk about a miracle of Made-For-tv goodness. Dark Night of the Scarecrow was released in 1981 to the CBS audience at large. It was released on October 24th no less, my birthday. I would have been one year old. I definitely did not catch this on the evening movie; I was probably keeping my parents from sleeping. While its really no more than a simple revenge film, the method and scope of the revenge is brutal, haunting… its damn near terrifying. Let’s not forget that this classic was virtually lost for nearly thirty years even with a small VHS run in the 80′s. It was released again in 2010 on DVD and horror history has thus been preserved. It Came From 1980 X needs you to consider picking this up on DVD and enjoying what is no longer a forgotten classic. It is remembered with love and terror.

For a while, successful horror looked to be a thing of the past. With the close of the 1980s it seemed that audience fatigue had set in regarding reigning franchises. 1989 saw minimal box office returns for the Friday the 13th, Halloween and A Nightmare on Elm Street franchises, indicating that audiences might’ve had enough of these recurring bogeymen. Original horror wasn’t faring much better, either, with the majority of ‘successful’ movies pulling in around $20-$30 million in final grosses. Budgets hadn’t yet inflated, so these returns were often respectable – although hardly the stuff of blockbusters. Hollywood pedigree stuff like The Silence of the Lambs, Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Interview with the Vampire made bigger bank, but on larger budgets and with considerably more advertising money backing them.

People love horror movies about psychiatric hospitals. It's one of those things that's hard to screw up because it's something that is just scary on principle--like clowns... or AIDS. Abandoned hospitals with broken down lobotomy chairs and hydrotherapy baths, mmm now that says creepy. Psych 9 however completely ruins that delightfully creepy atmosphere and turns it into a backdrop. It turns what could have been an original and stylish stab at the closed down mental hospital into a messy and ridiculous explosion of stupid.

Through the 70's and by the early 80's, the horror genre was finding it's way to a brand new audience. Made-for-tv movies such as "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" (1973), "Stranger in Our House" (Later re-titled Summer of Fear) (1978), "Midnight Offerings" (1981) and "Don't Go To Sleep" (1982), were scaring their way into living rooms and reaching a broader range of people who normally might not be exposed to these kinds of films or to the horror community in general. A friend called me as he was strolling around Best Buy this afternoon, and he made a passing mention of that fact that Dr. Giggles of all things was finally on Blu-ray (paired up with the execrable Otis). I only remembered that film as the cover of a VHS on a shelf at a video store long ago. Hell, I even remembered the tagline: "The doctor is out... of his mind!" But I never actually saw the thing.

I'm not gonna lie, it's a pretty uninteresting week for new releases on DVD and Blu-ray. The only really high profile flick in stores today is Antoine Fuqua's Brooklyn's Finest starring Don Cheadle, Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke and Wesley Snipes. Also out this week is Tom Ford's critically acclaimed drama A Single Man, the Swedish thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and the vampire comedy Bitten starring Jason Mewes. Every once in a while, a piece of news comes along that even though it is not Children of the Corn related, we feel it holds enough content and interest to deserve special mention right here on the site. Case and point - the long-awaited, first-time official dvd release of J.D. Feigelson's 1981 television classic, "Dark Night of the Scarecrow".

Larry Drake (Dr. Giggles) portrays Bubba, a mentally challenged man who befriends a small girl as a playmate in the town in which they both live. One day, the townsfolk find the girl attacked and as she is unable to tell them what happened, they assume it was Bubba. Led by postman Otis (Charles Durning), four of the men form a group, hunting Bubba down where they find him hiding as a scarecrow in a nearby cornfield. They open fire, thinking they have achieved revenge on the little girl's attacker.

If you've seen Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, then you already know how insane the pairing of Nicolas Cage and filmmaker Werner Herzog proved to be. That madness probably won't compare with what the duo have in store for us when they reteam later this year for a remake of Dr. Giggles.

Manny Coto's 1992 slasher comedy Dr. Giggles cast Darkman villain Larry Drake as Doctor Evan Rendell, a deranged doc that murders his victims with an arsenal of exaggerated medical equipment while quipping bad medical puns and earning his nickname "Dr. Giggles" with a loony high-pitched laugh. The movie was something of a box office dud but has since garnered a small cult following.
