Tom Hanks’ WWII Film ‘Greyhound’ Fetches a Sequel on Apple TV+
Image
Tom Hanks' Commander Ernie Krause will be back in action soon. The Apple TV+ World War II naval thriller Greyhoundis getting a sequel. Deadline reports that Hanks will return to both star and pen the script, and a number of creatives from the first film are on board, as well. The film is set to begin shooting early next year.

In addition to Hanks, director Aaron Schneider (Get Low), who helmed the original film, is back for the sequel, as is producer Gary Goetzman from Hanks' production company Playtone. The rest of the cast is currently in negotiations, but Deadline reports most of the cast from the original will return. The sequel will reportedly see Krause and the crew of the USS Keeling take part in the latter half of World War II, including the Normandy landings and action in the Pacific theater. The original was one of Apple TV+'s first original movies,...

John Wayne's True Grit Launched A Completely Useless Franchise
Image
John Wayne was one of the biggest movie stars in the history of the medium, but because he reigned during the 1940s, 1950s, and some of the 1960s, he was not a beneficiary of franchise filmmaking. This was a blessing, as it allowed the star to entrust his coarse brand of heroism to great filmmakers like John Ford, Howard Hawks, and Don Siegel, all of whom were free to tweak his persona within reason while not being yoked to an ongoing narrative arc that forced them to color inside pre-determined lines. Look at it this way: instead of Wayne and Ford making a series of Ringo Kid movies after the success of 1939's "Stagecoach," they were able to re-team on original stories like "Fort Apache," "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon," and "The Searchers," which challenged the Duke to play different kinds of hard men facing different kinds of dilemmas.

When...

This 25-Year-Old Julia Roberts Movie Led to 1 of the Greatest Oscar Wins of All Time
Image
The Academy Awards over the years have garnered a strange reputation. Every year, without hesitation, fans will turn on their televisions to watch the pompous program, and celebrities will flock to the Dolby Theater to take part in it. Despite the awards banquet remaining a huge deal to virtually everyone, it truly seems like no one is happy with the state of the program. A mountain of complaints have been leveled against the Academy over the years, from "#OscarsSoWhite" to complaints of sexism, to allegations of xenophobia. The most common complaint, however, is far less serious and far more avoidable, and it concerns the "Consolation Oscar."

A consolation Oscar is a term for when an award is given to a legendary actor who is deserving of an Academy Award for their body of work, but isn't quite deserving of the one they received the award for. It is a collective...

The 10 Humphrey Bogart Movies With A 100% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Few movie stars compare to Humphrey Bogart. The tough-as-nails actor embodied the very idea of American film noir in the 1940s and 1950s, having made 16 noir films in his lifetime and proved himself to be just as adept at playing snarling villains as he was at playing a heroic, star-crossed lover. You may know him best as Sam Spade in "The Maltese Falcon" or Rick in "Casablanca," but if you know Bogart's full history, you know that he transitioned away from playing nastier characters to more classically "good guys" over time. If you're not quite ready to dive into his full career, it's not hard to blame you; although he died relatively young, at age 57, he appeared in 75 films across a few decades. So, you might ask yourself, where to start?

Certainly an easy way to start is by checking Bogart's page on Rotten Tomatoes. As ever, it's worth...

Katharine Hepburn Never Achieved A Shocking Oscars Accomplishment Despite Being A Record Holder
Image
Katharine Hepburn is one of the most well-loved and celebrated actors of all time, both by fans and critics, and her long list of Oscars awards and nominations is proof of this fact. Hepburn was known for her vivacious personality both on and off-screen, as she often played very strong and independent women. This personality made her an icon, and it helped her to continue to push the boundaries in her career. It is no wonder that Katharine Hepburn's movies led her to become one of the most awarded performers.

Hepburn was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1907, and she began acting in 1928 after becoming interested in acting during college. She began her career in the theater before transitioning to Hollywood, where she found greater success with her first film, A Bill of Divorcement. Hepburn's acting career spanned seven decades, and she starred in some of the most well-known movies from the golden age of Hollywood,...

The Only 3 Actors To Win Best Actress Oscars For Portraying Queens
Image
In the near-century history of the Oscars, there have only been three occasions where an actress has won the Best Actress award for portraying historical queens. Movies where a female monarch from history is put front-and-center have been a popular avenue explored again and again by Hollywood for decades.

Over the years, Hollywood films retold the stories of Catherine the Great, Cleopatra, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Queen Victoria, and more numerous times. And though this is a trend that the industry has yet to abandon, the list of actresses to receive the highest honor for that performance is considerably short. Interestingly, there have only been three times in Oscar history that an actress has won the Best Actress award for portraying a famous queen.

Two Oscars Legends Made This Best Actress Race Bigger Than The Records It Broke 42 Years Ago
Image
Meryl Streep and Katharine Hepburn are responsible for holding various Oscars records, and the two legends made 1982's Best Actress race a defining moment for the Academy Awards. Looking back on the history of the Oscars, Streep and Hepburn are two performers who have been constant forces in the Best Actress category. They collectively earned 29 nominations in the category, racking up six wins between them. As two of the 15 women to have multiple Best Actress Oscar wins, the Hollywood icons and their careers can often be linked and compared.

Both actresses are part of the Oscars' history books. Katharine Hepburn holds the record for most acting Oscar wins at four, something no other performer, regardless of gender, has done. Meanwhile, Meryl Streep holds the record for the most Oscar nominations for any actor with her staggering 17 nominations. Due to the nature of their career paths, though, there was only ever...

‘Bogart: Life Comes in Flashes’ Trailer: Humphrey Bogart’s Decades-Long Relationship with Lauren Bacall Is Relived in New Documentary
Image
The details of Humphrey Bogart’s epic marriage to Lauren Bacall will now be on the big screen.

Just months after late icon Bacall would have been 100 years old, the new documentary “Bogart: Life Comes in Flashes” puts her romance with longtime collaborator and co-star Bogart front and center. The duo’s son Stephen Humphrey Bogart worked closely with Humphrey Bogart Estate CEO Robbert de Klerk and director Kathryn Ferguson, who previously helmed the Sinéad O’Connor doc “Nothing Compares.”

“Life Comes in Flashes” is billed as an “inside look at one of Hollywood’s greatest cinematic icons, telling Humphrey Bogart’s story through his relationships with the five formidable women in his life – his mother and his four wives. Each relationship offers a deep and intimate understanding of a man for whom stardom was hard-won and richly deserved.”

Clint Eastwood's Favorite Movie Of All Time Is A 1950 Classic
Image
Clint Eastwood's Hollywood career officially began in 1955 when he made a brief, uncredited appearance as a lab technician in Jack Arnold's "Revenge of the Creature." Nine years later, unhappy as a midlevel television star on the CBS Western series "Rawhide," he jetted off to Spain to make a different kind of Western with a very different kind of director named Sergio Leone. The result, "A Fistful of Dollars," changed the face of the genre forever, and set Eastwood down the path to becoming a filmmaker in his own right.

Eastwood's directing career got off to a curiously assured start with the wildly suspenseful thriller "Play Misty for Me," in which the tough, swaggering star of "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" and "Dirty Harry" played a victimized Bay Area disc jockey. No one expected this from Eastwood, and it's fair to say no one saw this hugely...

The African Queen coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
John Huston in Mexico
John Huston’s The African Queen, starring Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart, is heading to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray this October.

Ah, now here’s a flat out classic vintage movie that’s now been confirmed for its 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray debut. From director John Huston comes the joyful The African Queen, a 1951 movie that paired up Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart.

Robert Morley co-stars, and the film itself is a rollicking action adventure. I’ve said this before talking about movies like North By Northwest in the past, but The African Queen is the kind of movie that I wonder gets overlooked by some because it’s a) old and b) acclaimed. In this case, it’s as fun as a summer blockbuster movie, and few people get to the end and think they’ve wasted 105 minutes of their life.

Anyway, back to the 4K release, that had been rumoured for some time.

Scott Stuber to Relaunch United Artists at Amazon MGM
Image
Scott Stuber has found his post-Netlfix gig, re-launching the storied United Artists studio label under Amazon MGM.

The multi-year partnership will see Stuber finance and produce films via his soon-to-be-launched production company that will be released through United Artists, both theatrically and on streaming for Prime. Stuber will be involved in all UA releases, even those his company does not produce.

Stuber and his new shingle will also have a first-look deal with Amazon MGM and will be based out of the company’s Culver City offices.

Stuber joins Amazon MGM after announcing his departure as the film head of competing tech giant, Netflix, at the top of the year. Under Stuber’s direction, Netflix’s feature business aggressively entered the blockbuster space, courting filmmakers such as Zack Snyder and the Russo brothers, as well as award-winning auteurs like Martin Scorsese. To join Netflix in 2017, Stuber, who established himself as an executive at Universal,...

Oscars flashback: Edmond O’Brien almost went 2-for-2 for ‘The Barefoot Contessa’ and ‘Seven Days in May’
Image
At the 27th Academy Awards, Oscar helped Edmond O’Brien win an Oscar.

O’Brien played sleazy show biz publicist Oscar Muldoon in 1954’s “The Barefoot Contessa,” which starred Humphrey Bogart and Ava Gardner. Bogart had been crowned Best Actor of 1951 for “The African Queen,” and had also contended for the same award for 1943’s Best Picture, “Casablanca.” Gardner was coming off of her first and only nomination, for Best Actress in 1953’s “Mogambo.” “The Barefoot Contessa” was written and directed by Academy favorite Joseph L. Mankiewicz, who had won back-to-back Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay Oscars for 1949’s “A Letter to Three Wives” and 1950’s Best Picture, “All About Eve.”

”The Barefoot Contessa” didn’t fare quite as well at the Oscars as “Letter” or “Eve.” Neither Bogart or Gardner received nominations, though Bogart was cited for his role in that same year’s Best Picture entry “The Caine Mutiny.

The Sean Connery Movie That Inspired Raiders of the Lost Ark
Image
The influence of The Man Who Would Be King is evident in Raiders of the Lost Ark's exotic locations, thrilling action, and sense of wonder. Both films feature similar themes, with Raiders echoing ideas of obsession and pursuit of treasures. Spielberg's love for Sean Connery and Humphrey Bogart influenced the creation of iconic characters like Indiana Jones in the beloved film series.

When the blockbuster action-adventure film Raiders of the Lost Ark was released in 1981, there had never been another film like it, just as there has certainly never been another film like it since. Of the countless influences that George Lucas and Steven Spielberg brought to Raiders of the Lost Ark, the most direct influence, in terms of proximity, is the 1975 adventure film The Man Who Would Be King, which stars Sean Connery and Michael Caine as former British soldiers turned adventurers and con-men who travel to the faraway land of Kafiristan,...

The Gory Humphrey Bogart Western Scene Censors Didnt Like
Image
Few filmmakers have had quite as significant an impact on the industry at large as director John Huston. The impressive scale and specificity of emotion that Huston derived from his projects made his films immensely entertaining. Many of Hustons best films, such as The Maltese Falcon, The African Queen, The Man Who Would Be King, Key Largo, or The Misfits havent aged a day; theyre so finely crafted that they hold up just as well for a modern audience. While Huston is often thought of as a populist filmmaker because of how enjoyable his films are, that shouldn't suggest that he was in any way cautious about exploring the darker side of genre storytelling.

Bones' 200th Episode Credits Required More Than Just The Network's Approval
Image
When David Boreanaz read for FBI agent Seeley Booth in the "Bones" pilot, he instantly thought of "Harry and the Hendersons." It's not hard to see why. The character's relationship with his then newfound partner, the forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel), readily evokes that between the open-hearted Bigfoot Harry and John Lithgow's uptight, disapproving patriarch George Henderson Jr. in William Dear's Oscar-winning 1987 fantasy comedy film. Much like Harry and George, however, Bones gradually opens up to Booth in spite of his shenanigans and even bids him a teary farewell when he rejoins his fellow federal investigators living in the wilderness.

Alright, alright, fine, Boreanaz actually thought of "Romancing the Stone." Even in the pilot, long before they became a romantic item, Booth and Bones' repartee recalled Robert Zemeckis' 1984 hit action-rom-com, itself a throwback to Golden Age Hollywood screwball comedy and action-adventure classics like "It Happened One Night" and "The African Queen,...

A Humphrey Bogart Western Holds A Shocking Record That Even Casablanca Can't Beat

Humphrey Bogart's best film, according to Rotten Tomatoes, is The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, with a 100% Certified Fresh rating. Oscars: ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ and ‘Maestro’ stars aim for distinction 28 years in the making
Image
In the 95-year history of the Academy Awards, 88 films have each received nominations for both Best Actor and Best Actress. Although there have been 19 cases of two or more movies doing so in a single year, there hasn’t been such an occurrence since 1996, when both lead lineups included performers from “Dead Man Walking” and “Leaving Las Vegas.” However, according to Gold Derby’s late-stage 2024 Oscar nominations predictions, that nearly three-decade gap is set to soon be closed by costar pairs from “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Maestro.”

The vast majority of the Oscars prognosticators who’ve been shaping our odds all season agree that Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”) will all clinch academy mentions for their lead performances. The last such quartet consisted of eventual winners Nicolas Cage (“Leaving Las Vegas”) and Susan Sarandon (“Dead Man Walking”) and their respective costars,...

Humphrey Bogart's 16 Gangster Movies, Ranked Worst To Best
Image
Humphrey Bogart's gangster movies from the '30s and '40s may not all live up to his high standards, but some became undeniable film noir classics. Warner Bros., the number one studio for crime movies, signed Bogart and often cast him alongside other recurring actors in their gangster films, like James Cagney and Edward G. Robinson. Bogart's talent shines through in his early gangster roles, even when the scripts and overall quality are lacking, and his versatility as both a romantic lead and a brutal criminal is what keeps him popular.

Humphrey Bogart got his start in Hollywood with a string of tough guy roles in gangster movies, some of which rank higher than others in terms of their quality. Before he started playing the hero in films such as The Maltese Falcon and The African Queen, Bogart was an out-and-out villain. Most of his movies from this...

Image
(Welcome to Did They Get It Right?, a series where we look at Oscars categories from yesteryear and examine whether the Academy's winners stand the test of time.)

With all the milestones that have occurred throughout the 95-year history of the Academy Awards, there are still plenty of accomplishments that have not transpired. No Black woman has ever been nominated for Best Director, and no Black person has ever won that category. No animated film has ever won Best Picture, and no documentary has ever been nominated. I do believe all of these things will eventually happen in the future. As the diversity of the industry steadily increases and Academy membership gradually expands, these sorts of things must happen as time moves on.

But there is one thing I remain skeptical about when it comes to Oscars milestones. It has nothing to do with representation, nor does it have to...

The Greatest Movie Stars Of All Time Only Worked Together Once - & Won An Oscar For It
Image
Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart were named the greatest female and male screen legends in AFI's 1999 poll, a well-deserved honor considering their massive accomplishments and enduring legacies in the film industry. Despite their legendary status, Hepburn and Bogart only collaborated on one film together, The African Queen, which is regarded as one of the greatest movies of all time and earned Bogart his only Best Actor Oscar win. The reason for their lack of collaboration after The African Queen is not known, but it is clear that they remained friends until Bogart's death, with Hepburn maintaining a friendship with Bogart's widow, Lauren Bacall.

The greatest male and female movie stars of all time in the American Film Institute’s (AFI) 1999 poll only collaborated on one film during their legendary careers – and the classic ultimately yielded a well-deserved Oscar win. The Golden Age of Hollywood included some of the most famous...

How Humphrey Bogart Became One Of Hollywood's Biggest Stars, After 30 Bad Movies
Image
Humphrey Bogart's early career was filled with forgettable movies and villainous roles before he broke into the A-list and landed leading roles. Bogart's performances in "The Maltese Falcon" and "The Big Sleep" established him as the template for hard-boiled detectives in film noir. It was Bogart's role in "Casablanca" that cemented his legacy as one of Hollywood's finest actors and showcased a more sensitive side to his acting abilities.

Humphrey Bogart is now remembered as one of the most iconic stars in movie history – and rightly so – but it took the actor a long time to escape B-movie villain roles. The American Film Institute has named Bogart as the greatest male movie star of all time. Bogart created the template for hard-boiled detectives in the film noir genre with his performances as Sam Spade in The Maltese Falcon and Philip Marlowe in The Big Sleep. He also played...

What Happened To The Casablanca Cast After The Movie
Image
Casablanca, released in 1942, is considered one of the greatest films in history and boosted the careers of its cast members. Humphrey Bogart, who played Rick Blaine, saw his popularity grow after Casablanca and starred in several successful films. Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid, Claude Rains, Peter Lorre, Sydney Greenstreet, Conrad Veidt, Dooley Wilson, and S.Z. Sakall all had successful careers after Casablanca.

Casablanca is widely considered one of the greatest films in history, and its impact was such that it boosted the careers of most of its cast. Based on the play Everybody Comes to Rick’s, by Murray Burnett and Joan Alison, Casablanca was directed by Michael Curtiz and released in 1942. Casablanca takes viewers back to 1941 and to the city of Casablanca, which at the time, was controlled by the French, to meet American expatriate and nightclub owner Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) and Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman), Rick’s former lover...

10 Best War Movies By Filmmakers Who Actually Served
Image
From Oliver Stone’s Platoon to John Ford’s They Were Expendable, some of the greatest war movies ever made were the work of filmmakers who actually served in the military. The 400 Blows director François Truffaut famously said that it’s impossible to make an anti-war film (via the BBC), because the inherent spectacle of cinema means that any war movie will inevitably glamorize warfare. However, cinematic portrayals of war are a lot more accurate when they’re helmed by a director who’s actually fought in a warzone and lived through the horrors of war.

There are plenty of terrific filmmakers with a military background who drew on that background to create a realistic war movie. U.S. Army veteran Joseph Sargent directed a great biopic of General of the Army Douglas MacArthur. U.S. Army Air Forces veteran Robert Altman satirized the Korean War in his hit dark comedy M*A*S*H.

This Is the Only Person to Win an Oscar for Playing an Oscar Winner
Image
To this day, no actor has won more Academy Awards for acting than the legendary and world-renowned Katharine Hepburn. Her whopping four Oscars for Best Actress fail to wholly measure the impact and influence she left behind. For one, Hepburn never won for her most iconic roles and films. Morning Glory, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, The Lion in Winter, and On Golden Pond, the films which featured Oscar-winning performances, are not cinematic landmarks to the likes of Bringing Up Baby, The Philadelphia Story, and The African Queen. If the star ever needed another notch on her belt as a Hollywood giant, Hepburn's portrayal in The Aviator by Cate Blanchett amounted to the first and currently only time that an acting Oscar was awarded to someone playing an Oscar winner.

Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn in La regina d'Africa (1951)
‘Oh my God, what will they think?’ How Katharine Hepburn was haunted by fear of audiences
Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn in La regina d'Africa (1951)
New documentary uses unheard tapes and unseen footage to reveal insecurities of legendary actor

Her classic films include The African Queen and The Philadelphia Story and she still holds an Oscar record for four wins and 12 nominations, but Katharine Hepburn was haunted by a fear of performing. Despite her success as one of the industry’s foremost actresses, she saw the audience as her “natural enemy” and would repeatedly seek reassurance of her talent from those closest to her.

Her nephew, Mundy Hepburn, recalled that her anxiety was extreme when she came backstage after live performances: “Now and again she’d puke in the wastebasket, because she was so wired and scared and ‘Oh my God, what’ll they think? I’ve got to do a good job’ … Then she’d go on stage and be absolutely brilliant … She’d grab me by the shoulders. ‘Was I any good? Was I any good?...

Will ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ be the 3rd film to win 3 acting Oscars?
Image
The SAG Awards often match the Oscars for acting pretty closely, so when “Everything Everywhere All at Once” achieved an unprecedented clean sweep of all its categories including three individual acting races, the immediate question became, can it do the same thing at the Oscars? Only two films in history have ever won three acting trophies.

See‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ or ‘Everything Everywhere’ would be 9th film to win both supporting acting Oscars

“A Streetcar Named Desire” was the first. Adapted from Tennessee Williams‘s play, the 1951 film won Best Actress (Vivien Leigh), Best Supporting Actor (Karl Malden), and Best Supporting Actress (Kim Hunter). The only award it lost was Best Actor for arguably the film’s most iconic performance by Marlon Brando. That award went instead to Humphrey Bogart for “The African Queen.”

Then 1976’s “Network” pulled off the same feat, winning three awards out of a remarkable five acting nominations.

‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ eyes an unprecedented above-the-line Oscar sweep
Image
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” has had a great couple of days. The Oscar frontrunner won the top prize at the Producers Guild of America Awards on Saturday, proving that it can conquer the preferential ballot. The next day, it pulled off a historic sweep at Screen Actors Guild Awards with a record four wins for ensemble, lead actress for Michelle Yeoh, supporting actor for Ke Huy Quan and supporting actress for Jamie Lee Curtis. The triple individual wins — also a first for a film in SAG Awards history — were unexpected as Curtis upset odds-on favorite Angela Bassett (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”), but they just speak to the movie’s strength. They also tee it up for a never-before-seen above-the-line sweep at the Oscars: “Everything Everywhere” can be the first film to win Best Picture, Best Director, a screenplay award and three acting prizes.

The multiversal hit is the runaway...

John Huston
Image
John Huston is one of the most celebrated directors and screenwriters in Hollywood. Born on August 5, 1906, in Nevadaville, Colorado, he was the son of actor Walter Huston and Rhea Gore. He began his career as a journalist and later worked as an amateur boxer before entering movies.

Huston’s movies were often morally ambiguous, with elements of both comedy and tragedy. He rose to fame for movies such as “The Maltese Falcon” (1941), which starred Humphrey Bogart, “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre” (1948), starring Humphrey Bogart and Walter Huston, and “The African Queen” (1951), starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. He also wrote many movies including “The Asphalt Jungle” (1950) and directed iconic movies such as “The Man Who Would Be King” (1975).

Huston was highly acclaimed by critics for his skillful direction in movies that explored complex themes such as greed and morality. Many of his movies featured actors who had trained under revered director Erich von Stroheim.

Will Brendan Fraser be one of the rare Best Actor Oscar winners from a non-Best Picture nominee?
Image
Brendan Fraser has been the Best Actor Oscar frontrunner the entire season for his performance in “The Whale” and remains the odds-on favorite to win. On the surface, this doesn’t seem surprising — it’s a baity, transformative turn — but anyone following this closely knows that his chances took a hit when “The Whale” was snubbed in Best Picture. If Fraser does take home the gold, he’ll be one of the few and far between Best Actor champs for a non-Best Picture nominee and the first in 13 years.

The most recent one was Jeff Bridges, who prevailed for “Crazy Heart” (2009) in the first year of the expanded Best Picture lineup. Two years ago, Chadwick Boseman was widely predicted to follow in Bridges’ footsteps despite “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’s” Best Picture miss, but the late star lost to Anthony Hopkins, of Best Picture nominee “The Father,” in the most...

Todd McCarthy: Intensive Research On Making Of DeMille’s ‘Ten Commandments’ In Egypt Is Backdrop For New Novel
Image
The first time Cecil B. DeMille parted the waters of the Red Sea, to film the 1923 version of The Ten Commandments, he did it at Seal Beach, CA, just 30 miles down the Pacific coast from Santa Monica. Three decades later, when Paramount Pictures decided to remake the Old Testament tale in Technicolor and VistaVision, the same director returned to do it again, only this time on location on the Sinai Peninsula with thousands of extras provided by the Egyptian army — no matter that the country’s military was rather busy with urgent geopolitical matters at the time. Both versions were massive hits, with the remake serving as the capper to DeMille’s illustrious career.

Hey Duggee (2014)
Hey Duggee’s Best TV and Movie Homages From Apocalypse Now to Game of Thrones
Hey Duggee (2014)
If you think you’re too old for Hey Duggee, you’re wrong. Whereas some kids’ TV shows are very obviously made for young audiences, animator Grant Orchard created Hey Duggee as a ‘family show’ which can be enjoyed by the parents as well, inspired by the likes of The Muppets and The Flintstones. This becomes obvious the more you watch, with proper laugh-out-loud moments for adults like the frog announcing it’s going on a ‘gap yah’ and Roly the hippo being asked to choose his superhero name and plumping with miscalculated enthusiasm for ‘Stephen!’

So it’s unsurprising to spot countless clever grownup references to classic TV and films dotted throughout Hey Duggee’s four series, from the subtle to the downright uncanny. In fact, it becomes rather addictive to look out for them, so we’ve listed a few of the best ones here:

Apocalypse Now and...

‘See How They Run’ Review: All-Star Backstage Whodunit Winds Up Dead on Arrival
Adrien Brody, Sam Rockwell, David Oyelowo, Reece Shearsmith, Saoirse Ronan, Pippa Bennett-Warner, Ruth Wilson, Sian Clifford, Pearl Chanda, Harris Dickinson, Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, and Charlie Cooper in Omicidio nel West End (2022)
There is a promising idea behind “See How They Run,” a whodunit set in London’s West End in 1953 against the backdrop of Agatha Christie’s long-running stage hit “The Mousetrap,” but it proves far too complicated to execute for director Tom George and writer Mark Chappell, who resort to clumsy flashbacks and pointless split-screen sequences without ever finding the right tone for their movie.

“See How They Run” starts out with narration by crass movie director Leo Köpernick (Adrien Brody), who has been hired to direct a film of “The Mousetrap” after the play has closed out its run. Köpernick gets into a fight at a party with the cast of the play and winds up murdered backstage at the theater; his corpse is propped up on a couch on stage, and the murderer has pulled out his tongue.

Inspector Stoppard (Sam Rockwell) sets about solving the case with...

The Harder They Fall's Cast Made It An Awkward Prospect For Humphrey Bogart
Image
By the time of Humphrey Bogart's final film performance, in 1956's "The Harder They Fall," the movie star had fallen gravely ill. His years of smoking and drinking climaxed with what would become fatal esophageal cancer, which cast an unmissable pall on his performance. And yet, he still brings his star-making qualities: the toughness and bitterness, the anger and wry sarcasm.

Because "The Harder They Fall" is just one of many noir-era movies about the boxing underworld, it gets less respect than Bogart's many classics. He hadn't even wanted to be in the movie, focusing his remaining energy in vain on another movie with his wife Lauren Bacall, according to Stefan Kanfer's Bogart biography "Tough Without a Gun." He had many reasons for not being interested in the movie, but the cast was a big one.

"The Harder They Fall" is unromantic and cynical, with Bogart, reduced...

The Movie That Ended Humphrey Bogart's Creative Relationship With Director John Huston
Image
In the pantheon of great director-actor pairings, it is hard to match the six-film run of John Huston and Humphrey Bogart. The blustery filmmaker and his brutally handsome star confidently segued from the world-weary noir of "The Maltese Falcon" to the caustically funny misadventure of "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" and on to the rambunctiously romantic banter of "The African Queen." Over their first five films, Huston's style is refreshingly unfussy. He's not trying to knock the viewer out with bravura coups de cinema. Rather, he reads the emotion of his characters, and, if he's cast well, the camera always ends up in the right place, while every cut and transition flows mellifluously through to the final reel.

Huston made a lot of movies, and more than his share of stinkers, but he never misfired when collaborating with Bogie -- that is, until 1953, when they came together for the garishly cynical "Beat the Devil.

Oscars flashback 70 years to 1952: 1st for Humphrey Bogart, 2nd for Vivien Leigh, shocker for ‘An American in Paris’
Image
On March 20, 1952, two black and white dramas came into the Oscar ceremony vying for the win. Both “A Streetcar Named Desire” and “A Place in the Sun” had everything the Academy loves: drama, an ensemble of well-known actors and directors – many of whom had previous nominations and wins – and loads of nominations. By the time the Best Picture was to be announced, each had picked up major wins – “Streetcar” had claimed three of the four acting wins, while “Sun” had picked up statues for directing, cinematography and editing. So, it was a “what the heck??” Oscar moment when the final big prize was shockingly announced: the romantic musical “An American in Paris.”

A little over six years after the end of a war that ravaged Europe and in the middle of a Cold War that led to the infamous Hollywood blacklist that destroyed the careers of friends and collaborators, the...
