Kermit The Frog Becomes Arrakis' Messiah In Dune & Muppets Crossover Art
Image
Kermit the Frog takes on the role of Paul Atreides in a hilarious crossover art, imagining The Muppets in Dune's universe. The art features Kermit wearing Paul Atreides' distinctive costume, complete with Filt-plugs, and a giant sandworm with Animal's face. A Muppet adaptation of Dune could provide a lighter and potentially profitable take on the complex and heavy themes of the franchise. However, it is unlikely to happen due to Legendary Pictures' ownership of the film rights.

A hilarious crossover art imagines The Muppets' Kermit the Frog as the Lisan al-Gaib, the messianic figure from Dune. Played by Timothée Chalamet in the latest movie adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic science fiction novel, Paul Atreides survived an assassination attempt orchestrated by Baron Harkonnen only to later seek refuge in the deserts of Arrakis with the native Fremen. With Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 adaptation only covering half of the original book, Paul...

Israel Hands: Who The Black Sails Pirate Was In Real Life Explained
Image
Israel Hands was Blackbeard's first mate, according to historical accounts. Despite his brutality in Black Sails, Hands maintains unwavering loyalty to Blackbeard, which eventually pays off when he is made captain of Adventure.

When Jonathan E. Steinberg's historical adventure series, Black Sails, premiered on Starz, it introduced a number of famous pirates who actually existed during the Golden Age of Piracy, one of them being Israel Hands. A prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel, Treasure Island, Black Sails follows a young Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) and his crew members, who fight for the survival of New Providence Island. During their quest, Flint and his crew encounter various favorite pirates like Anne Bonny (Clara Paget), Blackbeard (Ray Stevenson), and of course Israel Hands (David Wilmot).

First introduced in season 4 of Black Sails, Israel Hands made a great impression of being a brutal pirate who was willing to do...

15 Great Animated Movies Everyone Forgot Existed
Image
Thanks to studios like Disney and DreamWorks, everyone has a favorite animated movie. Whether it is from nostalgia or simply great storytelling, animation holds a special place in the hearts of many fans. Everyone knows the famous and critically-acclaimed animated features like Beauty and the Beast or The Lion King. However, there are animated movies that did not receive immediate praise or did not perform all that well at the box office that also touched the lives of many fans.

Simply due to their lack of making money or because a few critics did not enjoy them, many incredible stories have been forgotten. Those films deserve to be remembered, watched and enjoyed. Not only did passion and hard work go into making these films, but the final products are as good as any critically-acclaimed animation, despite being unappreciated at the time of their release.

The Blacklist Season 10 Episode 3 Review: The Four Guns
Image
This The Blacklist review contains spoilers.

The Blacklist Season 10 Episode 3

In typical The Blacklist fashion, “The Four Guns” doesn’t refer to firearms. Rather, the four individuals who are on Raymond Reddington’s (James Spader) blacklist this week are goniffs, Yiddish for “thieves.” These are not your run of the mill pickpockets. After all, they move through Senator Cynthia Panabaker’s (Deirdre Lovejoy) re-election speech at the park as an “apex predator,” a single organism of coordinated effort that manages to deftly swipe two guns, a radio, and a cell phone off of the two Secret Service men tasked with protecting Panabaker from malcontents. One of those secret service weapons is the one that fires at Panabaker but hits one of her agents in the shoulder instead.

A goniff is not a murderer, but a sly trickster who takes what belongs to another while fearing flesh and blood and eluding discovery at all cost.

A late ‘50s showcase for classic horror films, Shock Theater managed to captivate children and worry their over-protective parents. But the kids knew the score, if you were looking for a real shock, forget Frankenstein and Dracula and put on a Disney movie.

Walt Disney’s assault on our nervous systems began in 1937 with the story of a bloodthirsty crone bent on removing the heart of her trusting rival—that feel-good fable was followed by the huntsman who murdered Bambi’s mom, and the demon-fueled bacchanal in 1940’s Fantasia. Uncle Walt’s reign of terror reached its apex with another kind of mad monster party in 1959’s Darby O’Gill and the Little People—a full moon parade of green-eyed goblins...

Since being acquired by Disney, The Muppets have had many fits and starts in their journey. Multiple attempts at series have been unsuccessful, including 2015's The Muppets and 2020's Muppets Now, and recent films have been polarizing at best. But with Muppets Haunted Mansion, it's possible that the beloved characters might have finally found their footing again.

Disney+’s ‘Muppets Haunted Mansion’: TV Review
Image
Few brands are better suited to mine preexisting intellectual property than the Muppets. From A Christmas Carol to Treasure Island to countless parodic sketches and interludes, the synthetic ensemble has demonstrated a unique ability to smartly insert its myriad felt archetypes into almost any story.

Of course, because everybody knows the resilience of the Muppet brand, too often there’s an attempt to shoehorn the beloved characters into properties with a high concept but no actual story. That’s probably why Disney+’s new holiday special Muppets Haunted Mansion doesn’t quite feel like a cash-in violation, but definitely feels like a disappointment.

Guillaume Brac Introduces His Film "All Hands on Deck"

Guillaume Brac's film All Hands on Deck is exclusively showing on Mubi in most countries in the series The New Auteurs, as well as the retrospective Summer Light: Films by Guillaume Brac.Just over a year ago, the director of the Cnsad (Conservatoire National Supérieur d’Art Dramatique—the Higher National Conservatoire for Dramatic Art), Claire Lasne-Darcueil, asked me to write a feature-length fiction film for a dozen young actors from the class of 2020. With one proviso: I had to shoot between summer and autumn 2019, so that the film would be finished by the time they graduated.I immediately saw this as an opportunity to paint the fictional portrait of a generation, just like Pascale Ferran did twenty-five years ago with L’âge des possibles, written for a class at the Théâtre National de Strasbourg. When Tom Hopper Isn't Saving the Day on Umbrella Academy, He's Making Us Swoon Over His Marriage
Sorry folks, if you were hoping you could get with The Umbrella Academy's Luther, you're out of luck. The actor, Tom Hopper, is happily married. Tom and wife Laura Hopper started dating in 2009, seemingly due to a chance meeting at a party. After five years of dating, the pair tied the knot in June 2014. The couple then welcomed a son named Freddie Douglas Hopper in 2015 and a

daughter named Truly Rose Hopper

in 2018.

While they didn't play love interests, Tom and Laura have shared the screen before as Billy Bones and Esther in the Treasure Island prequel, Black Sails. Catalog From The Beyond: Needful Things (1993)
Image
Ed Harris has popped up a few times in my Catalog From the Beyond’s coverage, which isn’t surprising considering he’s one of my favorite character actors of all time. He brings an intensity that always seems like he’s on the brink of a meltdown in any movie he’s in, from a vengeful gangster in A History of Violence to an obsessed LARPer in George Romero’s Knightriders. The dude even dances like a nut in Creepshow. As it turns out, this simmering rage is the perfect fit for the lead in another Stephen King property, 1993’s Needful Things.

Based on King’s 1991 novel, Needful Things features Harris as Castle Rock sheriff Alan Pangborn, who’s settled into what he thinks will be a quiet life after leaving the Pittsburgh police force. As the movie opens, things are looking up, as he proposed to local diner owner Polly Chalmers.

Disney is rightly adored for its animated features, but less lauded are its live-action films. Though in recent years, the company has made the polarizing decision to give some of their most classic hand-drawn efforts the live-action treatment, dating back to the 1950s with Treasure Island, they've produced dozens of live-action movies not based on their own intellectual property.

The Worst Thing Each Main Character From Black Sails Has Done
Pirate epic Black Sails may be over, but our love for the small screen pirate epic isn't going anywhere. This prequel to the famed Treasure Island took some of the most famous faces of piracy and brought them to life, with more than enough sex and swashbuckling for any fan of the high seas.

However, it's worth pointing out that while these characters were sympathetic, stunningly attractive, and had fans rooting for them (or rooting for them to meet their end), they were also pretty terrible people. They are pirates, after all! And that means plenty of looting, thieving, betraying, and out and out murder at every turn. But what was the worst thing that each of the major players did over the course of the show? Interestingly, actual killing may not be as big a part of this list as some might expect,...

Forgotten by Fox: A Lad Insane
As Disney quietly disappears huge swathes of film history into its vaults, I'm going to spend 2020 celebrating Twentieth Century Fox and the Fox Film Corporation's films, what one might call their output if only someone were putting it out. The great movie factories were so prolific, none of them have succeeded in making anything like all their major works available on the repertory circuit, home video, television, or streaming, but Fox now seems particularly indifferent to providing any access to their catalog, so focusing on them seems fair. I hope to illuminate the movies Fox ought to be proud of, and a few you couldn't blame them for wanting to hide under a rock.Oh, and we're doing it chronologically, so first up is a crummy kids' film from 1917.Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp is directed by workhorses Sidney and Chester M. Franklin, perhaps best remembered for the Dorothy Gish...

‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Creator Dean DeBlois on How the Franchise’s Animation Matured With Hiccup
Jay Baruchel in Dragon Trainer 3 - Il mondo nascosto (2019)
A version of this story about “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” first appeared in the Oscar Nominations Preview issue of TheWrap’s Oscar magazine.

There are some film sagas that grow up with their audience, beginning when a certain generation is still having their hands held by their parents and ending when they are preparing to go to college.

For millennials, the film that marked their passage into adulthood was “Toy Story 3.” For Generation Z, it is “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.” For trilogy creator Dean DeBlois, creating a story that could deliver a final message to those who grew up with Hiccup and Toothless was essential when it came time to writing the script.

“When we did the first sequel we decided back then that we were going to visit these characters at different points in their lives, and in doing so...

Black Sails Characters Sorted Into Their Hogwarts Houses
Black Sails, originally aired on Starz and now available on Hulu, was a historical fiction series based somewhat on the novel Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. Off-Kilter Han Solo Story Was Inspired by Big Lebowski and Unforgiven

Another summer movie season and another Pirates of the Caribbean movie. What? You didn’t know there was yet another in the franchise that wore out its welcome a long time ago? Yes, Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales came and went awfully fast this summer, never a good sign. It played in St. Petersburg for about a week and then vanished. Did anybody see it? I didn’t and I’ve seen a lot of movies this summer. So let’s talk about a real pirate movie, from 1952 Blackbeard the Pirate, directed by Raoul Walsh and starring Robert Newton, Linda Darnell, William Bendix, and Keith Andes. Newton is to pirate movies...

Angry Fans Say Peter Frampton Threw a Tantrum and Stormed Off Stage When a Cameraman Cut Away from Him
A Peter Frampton show took a turn for the worse on Sunday night, leaving fans confused and angry with the British rocker.

Concertgoers took to social media to recount a “meltdown” Frampton had while opening for The Steve Miller Band at the Treasure Island Resort and Casino in Red Wing, Minnesota.

According to the accounts, the performer halted the show when a cameraman focused on a fan holding up a Frampton Comes Alive album instead of Frampton himself as he played a solo.

“He went over to the cameraman and tried to yank the camera out of his hands,” Jeffrey Borg,...

Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales – Review
L-r: Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) threatens and Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), in Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Photo: Peter Mountain. © Disney Enterprises, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

“Pirates of the Caribbean” sets sail for one more adventure at sea, in what is being hinted to be the final chapter in the franchise, Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. The result is mixed, with the good being Javier Bardem and Geoffrey Rush as villains, great visual effects, and a nice, satisfying ending. The bad being having to endure an over-long, nonsensical plot with sporadic moments of entertainment to get there.

Ok, everyone has a guilty pleasure, and mine might be pirates. As a fan of all things pirate, including silly pirate movies, it was a delight when the first Pirates Of The Caribbean, Disney’s attempt to turn an amusement park ride into a movie,...

Black Sails: Hannah New and Jessica Parker Kennedy look back on Eleanor and Max’s journey
Black Sails may be the testosterone-fueled prequel to an equally male-centric tale of Treasure Island, but make no mistake — a couple of beautiful Nassau women in the cast are bosses in the series, which ends its swashbuckling tale this season. Hannah New as Eleanor Guthrie and Jessica Parker Kennedy as Max have commanded fantastic action-filled scenes in this series, which sees the rise of Long John Silver, the continued counsel of Captain Flint and the demise of pirate legends Blackbeard (Edward Teach) and Charles Vane. Despite the preponderance of these meaty male roles, their characters have stayed integral to...read more...

‘Black Sails’ Final Season Review: Starz Series Doesn’t Make Waves Anymore
Having debuted in January 2014, the voyage of Starz's Black Sails is coming to an end, with the premiere of the fourth and final season of the pirate drama set for Sunday. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of wind at the back of the Emmy-winning Treasure Island prequel's final 10 episodes, and not many waves to be made by its exit. As I say in my video review above, with Power and Outlander now generating much of the heat for the now Lionsgate-owned Starz, it makes…...

Black Sails Season 4 Review
Two episodes were provided prior to broadcast.

On the surface, Black Sails is about pirates and plunder, but really it’s about politics. In a global society obsessed with the silver-tongued manipulators of public office, it’s fitting that today’s pirate show takes our favorite swashbuckling rum-swiggers and turns them into dour bureaucrats immersed in a game of political chess. The final season aims for a dramatic tale of collusion and infighting (cut from the same cloth as shows like Game of Thrones and Vikings, only with less precision), but the first two episodes lay the groundwork in tedious strokes.

Captain Flint and Long John Silver are the prized assets on display and the famous names connecting Black Sails to Robert Stephenson’s Treasure Island (we are in prequel territory, here). But a story of collusion and treachery needs an ensemble cast to keep the game afloat, and Flint...

Review: Alfred Hitchcock's "Jamaica Inn" (1939) Starring Charles Laughton And Maureen O'Hara; Blu-ray Special Edition UK Edition
By Tim Greaves

Not the most beloved entry in Alfred Hitchcock's cinematic oeuvre – by either audiences in general or the director himself – 1939's Jamaica Inn (based on a Daphne du Maurier novel first published three years earlier) is nevertheless a serviceable enough piece of drama, which perhaps finds its most ideal place nowadays as an undemanding rainy Sunday afternoon programmer.

Following the death of her mother, Mary Yellen (Maureen O'Hara) travels from Ireland to England intending to take up residence with her relatives at their Cornish hostelry the Jamaica Inn. After an unexpected detour, which on face value proves beneficial when she makes the acquaintance of local squire and magistrate Sir Humphrey Pengallan (Charles Laughton), Mary arrives at her destination to find her browbeaten Aunt Patience (Maria Ney) living in fear of a tyrannical husband, the brutish Joss Merlyn (Leslie Banks). It also transpires that the Inn is the...

George Lucas to Build His $1 Billion Museum in Los Angeles
Anthony Daniels, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, James Earl Jones, David Prowse, and Kenny Baker in Guerre stellari (1977)
For a while, George Lucas, the mastermind behind “Star Wars,” has been keeping us guessing as to which city he would choose to build his $1 billion Museum of Narrative Art — would it be Los Angeles or San Francisco?

Well, finally, we now know the answer: L.A. is the winning city.

The museum will exhibit the filmmaker’s personal collection of fine and popular art, including collectible memorabilia related to his very popular science-fiction franchise. The museum will be housed in a futuristic-looking building to be built in L.A.’s Exposition Park. This design beat out a competing design for Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay.

Billion Dollar George Lucas Museum To Locate in Los Angeles
Source: Lucas Museum of Narrative Art

George Lucas has chosen a personal home for his billion dollar Museum of Narrative Art. The winner is Los Angeles over San Francisco.

According to Los Angeles Times, the futuristic sci-fi looking museum is planned at Los Angeles’ Exposition Park—beating the proposed design for Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay.

Lucas, himself, will fund the project of about $1 billion, which includes the building costs, his personal art and an endowment of at least $40 million.

It’s a boon for the Los Angeles entertainment industry to house the 275,000-square-foot facility. It’s estimated that it will lead “tens of thousands in construction jobs” and a thousand permanent museum jobs as a “lowball estimate.”

Some of the artwork on display will be from Lucas’ personal collection of 10,000 paintings and illustration. They will include artwork from Norman Rockwell, N.C. Wyeth and R. Crumb. Of course,...

The 8 Best Walt Disney Animation Movies Since 2000
Walt Disney Animation is about to release its 56th film on November 23rd with Moana, which is directed by studio veterans Ron Clements and Jon Musker (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules). But before everyone has the opportunity to see that, I wanted to take a look back and rank the top eight films the Walt Disney Animation Studio has made since the year 2000. Why limit the list to just eight? Simply because that’s what I felt like doing today. The studio has had some big hits and some big misses over the last sixteen years, but the way I see it, these are the eight best movies they’ve put out in that time frame.

8. Treasure Planet

An underrated reimagining of Treasure Island, but with a steampunk vibe. With cool production design and solid voice work all around (including from Joseph Gordon-Levitt voicing the lead character), this movie deserves...
