Black Mirror: Maria’s Meltdown and Verity’s Delusions Couldn’t Save This Episode From Being the Worst Misfire of Season 7

Siena Kelly and Rosy McEwen shine in this second episode of the seventh season of Black Mirror. But their performances alone couldn’t save the episode from falling short of the Black Mirror quality. The season opened strong with the episode Common People, but Bête Noire lacks technological depth and suffers from glacial pacing.
As with many recent episodes, Charlie Brooker leans heavier into psychological drama than technological commentary. In the episode, the tech aspect is almost non-existent or treated so vaguely that it felt more like magic. Brooker failed to explore the mechanics of Verity’s parallel-world manipulations, as his focus was more on building the slow-burn tension.
