The Decameron, created by Kathleen Jordan, is inspired by the tales of Giovanni Boccaccio, in which 10 Florentines stuck in a mansion during the 1300s, tell each other stories when Europe was going through one of the most difficult phases in its history. So it can be said that the series is inspired by his short stories, though the makers have altered a lot of things and taken creative liberties wherever they could.

In the series, the Bubonic plague caused the deaths of millions of people. Nobody knew how to cure it, and so the recourse available was to go to a palace located in the countryside and socially distance yourself from everybody.
