James Marsters Admits Buffy's Writers Never Knew What to Do With Spike

Spike was never supposed to be in more than a few episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which is why the show's writers didn't have a solid creative direction for the vampire.
"They never really knew what to do with Spike," James Marsters told RadioTimes. Marsters first appeared as Spike in the second season of Buffy in 1998. "The original idea for Buffy was that vampires were just metaphors for the challenges of high school or the challenges of life," the actor added. "They were designed to be overcome; they were designed to die. Buffy is not an Anne Rice kind of thing, where you're supposed to feel for the vampires."
