Baseball’s $700 million man is proving to be worth every bit of his contract, as Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani has been named to the starters for the 2024 All-Star Game.

The game is set for Tuesday, July 16 at 8 p.m. Et at Globe Life Field, home of the Texas Rangers.

The most votes were cast for Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper and New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge. Both earned automatic spots as the most-voted-on players during Phase 1 of voting. The top two players (and top six for outfielders) advance to Phase 2 of fan voting. Pitchers are determined by a player ballot and the Commissioner’s Office.

The 27-year-old Ohtani hit 46 home runs with 100 Rbi and went 9-2 with a 3.18 Era and 156 strikeouts in 23 starts as a pitcher. Toronto Blue Jay Vladimir Guerrero Jr. finished second, while his teammate Marcus Semien came in third.

Ohtani is the second Japanese-born player to win an Mvp award, joining Ichiro Suzuki (2001). The award comes just two years after he underwent Tommy John surgery to repair an elbow ligament. That kept him from pitching in 2019 and limited him to just under two innings in 2020.

The 2016 American Music Awards aired on Sunday night, with Jay Pharoah and Gigi Hadid at the helm. The two, who made a surprisingly funny pair of hosts, guided the performance-filled evening like pros, but not everything could go according to plan.

For every great musical number there was a presenter who could not, for the life of them, figure out how a teleprompter worked. For every emotional, teak-jerking speech, there was somebody who had to throw some shade.
