'Succession' Creator Jesse Armstrong Returns to HBO to Tackle a Financial Crisis
Image
Seven-time Emmy winner and Succession creator Jesse Armstrong has found his next project. Variety reports that Armstrong will re-team with the show's executive producer Frank Rich for a new original film for HBO. The plot will follow "four friends who convene during a dramatic international financial crisis."

There aren't many details right now other than Armstrong is penning the script, and production will reportedly begin sometime later this year. The studio is checking on actors' schedules for availability, though no names have been announced as of this moment. No release date has been announced either.

Armstrong is primarily known for his work on television, and his biggest show, Succession, ended in 2022 after four seasons. During its time on air, the series won a total of 19 Emmys, including three for best drama series, with several statues awarded to Armstrong for his writing. Unsurprisingly, Succession is also one of the most critically-lauded series of all time,...

Kieran Culkin Admits To Pranking Mark Ruffalo With Marijuana in 1999
Image
In 2011, Kieran Culkin and Mark Ruffalo starred in the psychological drama Margaret, and while that film went off without a hitch, their time on stage together was a bit of a different story. The two appeared in the Off-Broadway production of James Lapine's The Moment When back in 1999 when Culkin was just a mischievous 17-year-old, who – as a prank – swapped out Ruffalo's fake marijuana joint for a real one. Now, 26 years later, the Succession star says he'll never try that again.

Speaking with The Guardian, Culkin reflected on the moment, saying that at the time he thought it was a "good prank." Surprisingly enough, Ruffalo took it all in stride, as did a few others who got in on the action to puff-puff-pass the joint around, including veteran stage star Phyllis Newman, who sadly passed away in 2019.

"I was 17 and stupid. I'm like, 'I thought this was a good prank.

Brian Cox Calls Out Hollywood's 'Brian Cox Doubles Down on Criticism of 'Overrated' Hollywood Stars Like Johnny Depp & Steven Seagal
Image
Critically acclaimed actor Brian Cox, who recently starred in HBO's Succession, called out several actors in his 2022 memoir Putting the Rabbit in the Hat. Some of the passages included references to Johnny Depp, Edward Norton, Steven Seagal, and Quentin Tarantino.

In a new interview with The Guardian, Cox admitted he upset several fellow actors over the years. In his memoir, he called Johnny Depp "so overblown, so overrated," which led to him turning down a role in The Pirates of the Caribbean. He also had other notes about fellow celebrities, as he called Steven Seagal, with whom he worked on 1996's The Glimmer Man "as ludicrous in real life as he appears on screen," noted Edward Norton is "a nice lad, but a bit of a pain in the arse because he fancies himself as a writer-director." He called Michael Caton-Jones, who directed him in Rob Roy, a "complete arsehole.

10 Best TV Shows Like House Of The Dragon While Waiting For Season 3
Image
House of the Dragon expertly blends high fantasy, political intrigue, and familial drama — and the combination of all those things makes it difficult to find similar TV shows. The Game of Thrones spinoff has yet to reach the heights of its predecessor, but it boasts many of the same strengths as the original HBO series. Its balance of personal and political stakes is impressive over the course of its first two seasons, and things promise to get even more tense between the members of House Targaryen in House of the Dragon season 3.

Unfortunately, it could be a while before the next season of House of the Dragon premieres, especially if the show repeats the two-year gap between seasons 1 and 2. This may leave viewers wondering what to watch in the meantime. While there aren't many shows exactly like House of the Dragon, there are some great series that feature similar elements and themes.

Succession Was Rava Roy's Personal Horror Movie (& Natalie Gold Agrees)
Image
Rava Roy (Natalie Gold) has a terrible time in Succession and, while everyone else is angling for attention, power, and wealth, Rava's living out her own personal horror movie. The Succession family tree is an extensive one with branches going all over the place thanks to marriages, divorces, remarriages, and cousins who decide to make unannounced appearances. For the most part, everyone in the tree wants as much Roy time as possible. How else are you going to climb the branches to the top if you don't know who will make your climb worthwhile?

One of these branches goes from Kendall (Jeremy Strong) to Rava, his ex-wife whom Kendall has two kids with. Rava and Kendall separated sometime before the series starts, but season 1 still sees them as cordial. Rava left Kendall due to drug addiction issues, the same ones that many people in his life mock and disregard him for.

American Horror Stories Season 4: Backrooms Cast & Character Guide
Image
American Horror Stories season 4 story "Backroom" includes a tight cast of television veterans. The horror anthology series, set within the greater universe of American Horror Story, has been largely focused on stand-alone stories that flesh out the frightening setting. This includes "Backroom," which focuses on a grieving father as he begins to disassociate with reality and find himself in a mysterious plane of existence. These "Backrooms" offer a clue to what really happened to his son Roman, a truth that Daniel doesn't realize he is actively avoiding.

This episode of American Horror Stories season 4 keeps the focus entirely on Daniel and his experiences, bringing audiences along with him into the unsettling realm of the "Backrooms." American Horror Stories season 3 is now streaming: Will there be an episode 10?
Image
The second part of American Horror Stories season 3 is now available to stream on Hulu. It is packed with five chilling new episodes. But what’s up with this release format? Is there an episode 10 still ahead? Is this season of AHStories season 3 or considered season 4? Here’s everything we know!

No release schedules are more complicated than those of streaming shows. And there’s so much confusion surrounding this new season of AHS’ spin-off AHStories. For starters, is it season 3 or season 4? Technically, the new episodes are part of season 3. The first half of the third season premiered almost a year ago on Oct. 26, so that’s why fans were not sure.

The first part of season 3 only features four episodes, but really it should have been its own season to avoid confusion. Alas, the five new episodes are considered part of season 3, for a grand total of nine episode.

Jeremy Strong Says He Doesn’t Miss Playing Kendall Roy On ‘Succession’: “It F***ed Me Up”
Image
Jeremy Strong has closed the Kendall Roy chapter of his life and is ready to move on.

The Succession star said in a recent interview that he does not miss playing the character he gave life to on the HBO drama for four seasons.

“It f*** me up,” Strong told The Sunday Times about playing Kendall.

Strong says that Succession “was an incalculable gift” and added, “The material a banquet. So I miss that. But Kendall’s struggle was difficult to carry for seven years. And there’s just so much more I want to do.”

The actor won an Emmy in 2020 for his role in the series, but don’t expect him to carry Kendall on in a spinoff series.

“It’s not something I have any wish to do any longer. I’m aware it is one of the main chapters of my life, but I don’t miss it,...

Succession Season 5 Prospects Gets Candid Response From Kendall Roy Star Jeremy Strong
Image
Jeremy Strong confirms Kendall Roy's story reached an end in Succession season 4. Series creator Jesse Armstrong decided to conclude Succession despite HBO's reluctance. Strong is content with Kendall's closure, suggesting the character reached his "terminal point."

Succession's future gets a candid update from Emmy-winning actor Jeremy Strong, who starred as Kendall Roy. The celebrated HBO dramedy accomplished a relatively rare distinction, bowing out at a time when both audiences and critics would likely have embraced another round of Roy family squabbles. The decision to end Succession before season 5 came from series creator Jesse Armstrong despite reluctance from HBO executives, as he felt like the story had arrived at a natural end.

In recent comments to People, Strong talked about how Kendall reached his terminal point in the Succession season 4 finale. Even though Strong mentioned that the decision ultimately goes back to Armstong, he concedes: For me, thats something that is very happily put to rest.

Broadway’s Tony-Nominated ‘Appropriate’ Gets Third And Final Extension
Image
With eight Tony Award nominations, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ Appropriate, starring Sarah Paulson, has been extended for a third and what producers say is a final time.

After 26 weeks on Broadway, the production has added an additional eight performances to its run, with closing night at the Belasco Theater now set for Sunday, June 30.

The Second Stage Theater production received unanimous raves, with box office consistently strong with sold out (or nearly so) houses.

“We are beyond thrilled to extend Appropriate for one more week so additional audiences can witness this astonishing cast bring Branden’s brilliant play to life,” said the show’s producers in a joint statement. “The response from critics and audiences alike has been overwhelming, propelling the production from The Hayes Theater to an extended run at The Belasco and we feel lucky and extremely grateful for the support the show has received from the Broadway community.”

In addition to Paulson,...

Tony Awards snubs: ‘Patriots,’ Steve Carell, Chip Zien …
Image
With 36 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Renée Elise Goldsberry on Tuesday morning. Among the most surprising 2024 Tony nominations snubs was “Patriots.” Peter Morgan‘s history play about Russia earned three Olivier Award nominations last year, including Best New Play, Actor (Tom Hollander) and Featured Actor (Will Keen). In New York, it only scored one for Michael Stuhlbarg, who took over the role played by Hollander in the UK; Keen, who reprises his role as Vladimir Putin, did not score a nomination in a category stuffed with “Stereophonic” performers.

The revival of “The Who’s Tommy” also significantly underperformed. Gold Derby users predicted it would land three nominations for Best Musical Revival, Best Actor for Ali Louis Bourzgui and Best Choreographer for Lorin Latarro, but it only earned one bid in the top revival category.

‘Purple Rain’ Forecast For Broadway In Stage Adaptation By ‘Appropriate’ Playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins
Image
Purple Rain, Prince’s smash 1984 music-packed film, is being developed for the stage by a Broadway producer, with a book by two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and direction by Tony nominee Lileana Blain-Cruz.

Jacobs-Jenkins’ Appropriate is currently a hit on Broadway and an all-but-certain shoo-in for multiple Tony nominations this year. Blain-Cruz was Tony-nominated for her direction of the Lincoln Center Theater’s 2022 production of Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth.

The stage adaptation will feature music and lyrics from Prince’s Purple Rain movie and album.

The project was announced today by Broadway producer Orin Wolf. Additional production details and timing will be announced in the coming months.

Although Wolf’s announcement did not specifically mention Broadway, instead simply saying the project is being developed for the stage, Broadway almost certainly must be on minds given the high-profiles and previous credits of the individuals involved, not...

‘Appropriate’ Review: Sarah Paulson Is Entertainingly Vicious in Caustic Broadway Family Drama
Image
There are no Black characters in Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ caustic family drama Appropriate, but they nevertheless haunt the play. They are the unmarked graves scattered over the grounds of the former plantation home in southeast Arkansas, where the story’s action takes place. They are the spirits, felt like a shiver by guests in the home. And they are the objects collected — hoarded, really — over decades by the estate’s patriarch.

He’s dead now, and Appropriate, which opened Monday at Second Stage’s Hayes Theater in New York, concerns the blistering reunion of his heirs. The production is the first of Jacobs-Jenkins’ original works to be on Broadway and is staged by Lila Neugebauer (Causeway), who directed the dramatist’s Everybody at Signature Theater in 2017.

Appropriate begins with the shrill whine of cicadas. As that noise quiets, others intensify: the sounds of bodies shuffling in the bushes and the grunts of physical exertion.

Based on a 1920s English scandal, the film follows neighbors Edith Swan and Rose Gooding in the seaside town of Littlehampton. One day, a series of obscene letters begin to target Edith and others as suspicions fall on Rose. As the situation escalates, Rose risks losing her freedom and custody of her daughter. Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley, Anjana Vasan, Malachi Kirby, Eileen Atkins and Timothy Spall star in the film.

Though the opening screening happens on Jan. 5, the festival really kicks off the night before with the Film Awards, a starry ceremony that will shine a spotlight on Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Poor Things star Emma Stone, Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy,...

Will ‘Succession’ break its own Emmy record for most acting nominations? It has 19 performers on the ballot
Image
In 2022 “Succession” made history by earning 14 acting nominations at the Emmys. That’s the most any show has ever received in a single year. That number was especially remarkable as it came from 16 acting submissions on the Emmy ballot, meaning only two submitted performers failed to make the cut (supporting actor Alan Ruck and guest actor Justin Kirk). In 2023 the show has submitted more actors for consideration (19). So will the show break its own record by earning 15 or more acting noms?

Succession: Roman’s Words About Kendall’s Kids Bring New Meaning to His CEO Obsession
Image
This article contains spoilers for the Succession finale.

Succession’s harrowing four-season run came to an end with Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen) inserted as CEO of the newly-acquired GoJo version of Waystar Royco. After at least a couple of years of in-fighting, betrayals, and fleeting moments of happiness, the Roys have been relieved of their only lasting legacy and their ties to family patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox). The climactic scene during the final boardroom vote in which Shiv (Sarah Snook) decides to go back on her word and vote for the sale of the company to Lukas Mattson (Alexander Skarsgård) rather than keep the conglomerate in the hands of her brother Kendall (Jeremy Strong) was a tragic, pitiful display of shoddy family dynamics crashing and falling apart in real time. It showed all three siblings at their most emotionally raw, petty, and childish, and it wasn’t a pleasant scene to live vicariously through.

Succession Star Brian Cox Bids a Heartfelt Farewell to the Hugely Popular HBO Series
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Succession Season 4.

Golden Globe winner Brian Cox has penned a heartfelt tribute to the hugely popular series, Succession. The actor, who played the manipulative patriarch Logan Roy throughout the show, took to social media to heap praise on his experience working on Succession, calling it “certainly the greatest work experience ever,” and applauding the cast and crew who have worked so well to bring the saga of the Roy family to screens.

"We have now come to the end. And what has been, in my career, certainly the greatest work experience ever. The harmony between crew and cast was truly amazing. It was on it's way to become a great series but the love and commitment from crew to cast and writers, made it memorable. I would like to thank all of us in the making and creating of this show from the very bottom of my heart.

‘Succession’ Series Finale Has Fans Bidding Farewell To The Roy Family — See All The Big Reactions
Image
Spoiler alert: The following article contains “Succession” series finale spoilers.

After four celebrated seasons of in-fighting, scheming and brilliantly scripted family drama, HBO’s “Succession” came to an end on Sunday with the Roy family battling for control of their the media conglomerate empire, Waystar Royco.

The series finale saw the Roy siblings share a few rare moments of unity and collaboration, but built to some surprising backstabs and unexpected breakdowns that left fans reeling.

The centerpiece of the standout moments revolved around some unexpected twists. After Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) came together to put their support behind Kendall (Jeremy Strong) in their last-ditch effort to stop GoJo from buying out Waystar Royco, Shiv pulled off one of the show’s most ultimate switch-up betrayals.

When it came down the final vote, Shiv turned on Kendall and accused him of killing someone — referring to the events that...

On Succession, Those Roy Grandkids Are Probably Not All Right
Image
The old Leo Tolstoy adage illuminates that "each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." In the span of its four seasons, "Succession" focused on a particular miserable American clan, the obscenely wealthy and influential Roys.

The show charted the schemes and (self-)sabotages of the Roy children as they warred over their potential inheritance: CEO control of the Waystar RoyCo media company, run by their (now-late) patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox). Across toxic intrigue and backstabbing, the three kids, Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Roman (Kieran Culkin), and Shiv (Sarah Snook), fought tooth and nail for the throne.

In the wake of Logan's death and the series finale, the Roy family tree is still not doing all right. There are tantalizing questions about the third-generation Roys, the grandkids, who are more vulnerable under their family dysfunction and the world order that their Roy forebearers enabled. While the finale does not...

The Biggest Succession Storylines That Were Never Resolved
Image
This article contains spoilers for the "Succession" series finale.

"Succession" has never been a show with tidy, open-and-shut conclusions, and the series finale — "With Open Eyes" — wasn't any different. The last scene features Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong), having permanently lost his chance to run Waystar Royco, sitting in a park and unsure of what to do. The conclusions to these characters' journeys are as fitting as they are open-ended.

In the after-show featurette streaming on Max, series creator (and episode writer) Jesse Armstrong acknowledged these characters still have lives ahead of them. However, with no worries about spoilers, Armstrong was finally able to make his full case for why season 4 was the time to call it quits:

"I thought about all their stories. You know, they don't end. They will carry on, but it's sort of where this show loses interest in them because they've lost what they've wanted, which...

‘Succession’ Cast Reacts To That ‘Satisfying’ Yet Open-Ended Series Finale
Image
Spoiler warning: Here is a recap of the Succession season 4 And series finale, “With Open Eyes,” directed by Mark Mylod and written by creator Jesse Armstrong.

Succession, the Emmy-winning HBO family saga, about the Roys and their in-fighting for control of the media conglomerate, Waystar Royco, came to an end after four seasons — and in the process, finally revealed who would have a seat at the table as the company determined who would become CEO once and for all.

This comes after season 4 of Succession kicked off the Roy siblings — Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Roman (Kieran Culkin) and the secretly pregnant Shiv (Sarah Snook) — determined to start their own media company following their failed coup to take out their father, Logan (Brian Cox), in the season 3 finale, when they were betrayed by Shiv’s husband, Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen), and their cousin, Greg Hirsch (Nicholas Braun).

Since then, the series took...

Could These 'Succession' Season 4 Departures Make Kendall Go Full Logan?
Image
As Succession's fourth and final season comes to an end this Sunday, the question remains: who will be the successor to Waystar Royco? Ever since Logan's (Brian Cox) death, the Roy siblings (aside from Connor) have been in competition to see who can become most like their father, to varying degrees of success. When Kendall (Jeremy Strong) takes the reins after Roman's (Kieran Culkin) breakdown during their father's funeral, it seems like Logan's number one boy truly has his heart set on stepping into his father's shoes. This is further exacerbated by the departure of two important women in Kendall's life: his ex-wife Rava (Natalie Gold) and his assistant Jess (Juliana Canfield).

Jeremy Strong Discusses Succession Funeral Episode and His Character "Doubling Down" for the Series Finale
Image
As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, the Succession series finale is almost here, with "Church and State" serving as the show's penultimate episode. While chatting about the latest episode on the Succession Podcast, Jeremy Strong (who plays Kendall Roy) discussed Logan Roy's funeral and reflected on his character "doubling down" in preparation for the show's series finale.

Strong said, "It's a wonderful moment for Kendall, I think, to get to what he sees as speaking the truth. We've seen him in episode six, in the Living+ presentation, there's a certain kind of grandiosity in his public speaking and he sometimes rises to the occasion, in a character that we've seen so often miss the mark. But this one, because he hasn't prepared for it and he hadn't planned to do it — which he probably would have agonized over, and the prepared version, like all of us, might have been not...

'Succession' Season 4: Natalie Gold Explains Why Rava Left
Image
Succession has brought Rava Roy (Natalie Gold) and Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong) a lot of pain throughout its four seasons, but the last few episodes have really weighed on them as individuals and parents. In Season 1 of the series, we saw the destruction of their marriage and throughout the show, we've seen them try to come together to deal with their kids, be there for each other, and navigate a world where they're divorced, but they're still somewhat good for their family. But the warped election of Jeryd Mencken (Justin Kirk), threw a wrench in whatever progress Rava and Kendall had been making together. And Gold broke down why Rava decided to leave the city with their kids and not attend Logan Roy's (Brian Cox) funeral in Season 4 Episode 9 "Church and State."...

‘Succession’ Director Mark Mylod On Finding The Balance Between “The Epic And The Emotional” For Logan Roy’s Funeral
Image
It was time to say goodbye to Logan Roy during Sunday’s penultimate episode of Succession.

Episode 9, titled “Church and State,” puts Logan to rest with a massive affair that takes place inside a Manhattan cathedral. It’s 80 minutes that are heavy with a mix of emotions as the Roy siblings are finally confronted with the reality that their father is gone. In the five episodes that led to this moment, they’ve managed to shrug off their grief with the distraction of the looming GoJo deal and the presidential election. But now, there’s nowhere left to hide.

Their grief bubbling to the surface is clear from the beginning, when Kendall (Jeremy Strong) lashes out at his ex-wife Rava (Natalie Gold) for taking their kids out of the city for fear of violent protests as the contentious election continues to play out. Then he lashes out again at his...

 Brian Cox: June 1
Even ‘Succession’ Political Consultants Thought That Election Episode Was ‘Chilling’ and ‘Eerily Prescient’ (Video)
 Brian Cox: June 1
Two political consultants who advised on “Succession” were shocked by how “chilling” Sunday night’s episode was and how “eerily prescient” the writers of the HBO drama continue to be.

Season 4’s eighth episode, titled “America Decides,” sees the Roy siblings squabble with one another and put their thumb on the scale in Atn’s first election night coverage since the shocking death of their father, Logan (Brian Cox). The fictional network ends up calling the state of Wisconsin before all the votes can be counted in favor of Jeryd Mencken and later calls the entire election for the far-right presidential candidate.

In an interview segment reflecting on the episode Monday night, CNN’s Jake Tapper drew parallels between the show, the behind-the-scenes communications of Fox News that emerged in its legal battle with Dominion Voting Systems and the conservative channel’s now-infamous call that Joe Biden was projected to win Arizona in the 2020 election.
