With the Kentucky Derby becoming the cultural hotbed that it’s transformed into over the last decade, it’s no surprise that musicians, athletes, and influencers flocked to Louisville, Kentucky, for the 151st iteration of the The Run for the Roses (referencing the blanket of 554 red roses draped over the winning horse that crosses the finish line first each year).

Simone Biles came through for a big honor,...

Nil deals are the new recruiting hack, so agencies are helping schools turn athletes into influencers.
Image
Thanks to the advent of name, image, and likeness (Nil) deals, aspiring college athletes are weighing schools based on their social media capabilities. Recruiting battles that once centered around factors like facilities and prestige are now moving to platforms like TikTok and YouTube.

To keep up with a landscape that has reinvented itself over the past five years, colleges and universities are turning to industry experts for help. One notable effort is occurring at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where year-old firm Article 41 is teaching student-athletes how to harness their Nil potential and land five-to-six-figure brand deals.

Article 41’s work at Unc was the subject of a recent profile in the New York Times. The article notes that Article 41 Co-Founder Vickie Segar inspired student-athletes to use social media megastars like Alix Earle as inspiration. Earle, Segar explained, can be paid as much as $450,000 for a single sponsored Instagram post.

The Money Game Review: Rewriting the Playbook of Collegiate Athletics
Image
On July 1, 2021, the world of college sports changed dramatically when the Supreme Court made a decision that forever changed the economics of college sports. Student-athletes couldn’t make money from their skills for more than one hundred years, stuck in a system that made billions while leaving them broke. Everything changed overnight when the Name, Image, and Likeness (Nil) program was put in place.

Imagine being a famous player who draws huge crowds, raises money for your school through TV ads, and gets people excited about sports, but you can’t make any money from your success. For many years, that was the truth for college athletes. The Nil policy broke those rules, making it possible for students to make money off of their sports skills and personal brands.

The effects were felt right away and were very deep. Student players could get endorsement deals, make friends on social media,...

Livvy Dunne Places Her Bet On Simone Biles Triumph At Paris Summer Olympics Gymnastics
Image
Lsu gymnast and major influencer Olivia Dunne is on team Simone Biles.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Dunne said Biles is back with a vengeance.

“Simone has always been a Goat (greatest of all-time), and I think that this is, like, her revenge tour. What happened in (2021) was a freak thing, and I think that she is out for revenge,” Dunne said. “She’s gonna probably win.”

Dunne is referring to Biles’ last Olympics, when she had to drop out because of a case of the ‘twisties’ – where a gymnast’s mind and body fall out of sync.

Biles is leading the veteran Team USA women’s gymnastics team, which includes Suni Lee, Jade Carey and Jordan Chiles, along with newcomers Hezly Rivera, Joscelyn Roberson and Leanne Wong.
