Writer-director Brad J. Silverman’s “Selfie Dad” is a pleasantly predictable faith-based dramedy that has been scheduled and marketed for family viewing over Father’s Day weekend on VOD platforms. As it turns out, however, the timing of its release might actually serve to expand the film’s appeal slightly beyond the usual target audience for similar fare. Indeed, in the context of recent real-life events and Black Lives Matter protests, certain elements of Silverman’s narrative give his film, if only inadvertently, a slightly sharper edge than even he likely intended.

If there’s one thing I’ll never understand it’s the American obsession with the rapture. Over the past couple of years we’ve seen a ton of TV shows and movies centered around the biblical event and most – like The Remaining – are, frankly, terrible. From the gloriously over the top Nicolas Cage film Left Behind, to the completely unfunny (and a waste of the talents involved) Rapture-Palooza, it seems the mix of religious themes and current Hollywood film making do not gel. Then again maybe it’s because, despite a belief in a higher power, I’m not the target market for films of this nature – after all, most rapture-themed films play on inherent fears found in religion.

Last week we brought you the artwork for the latest end of the world flick, The Remaining, and now today we have the trailer for you to contend with! Don't get left behind! Sit back, grab an umbrella (doesn't matter if it's indoors as if you're still here after the Rapture... you're shit outta luck anyway), and see it for yourself.

That name might be familiar to you if you were following the development of The Amityville Tapes, an incarnation of the upcoming Amityville film that Casey was working on with Dan Farrands (I'm told their script was ultimately not used for Amityvile, however, they're listed as producers).

The line-up for this year's Film4 FrightFest in London has just been announced – and boy, is it a doozy! Sporting a record-breaking 38 UK/European premieres and 11 world premieres, this August is going to be an exciting time in the genre calendar.

Check it all out right here, including lots of new images!

This year Film4 FrightFest will be moving from its previous home at Leicester Square's Empire Cinema to the nearby Vue Cinema (also on Leicester Square), prompting an ingenious reshuffle of the screening arrangements.

All main screen films will be presented at different times across three different screens, with two extra screens reserved for single-slot screenings of the various films hitting this year's Discovery Screens.

The Remaining was a blip on our radar not long ago when you brought you a slice of casting news.  That film is officially complete and some stills have been sent our way.

Alexa Vega leads the cast alongside Shaun Sipos, Italia Ricci, Johnny Pacar, Bryan Dechart and Liz E. Morgan star in the film directed by Casey La Scala.

The film concerns a group of close-knit friends that come together to celebrate the marriage of Skylar (Vega) and Dan (Dechart). The group is enjoying the festivities when tragedy strikes. The wedding party is besieged by a series of catastrophic events which turns the celebration into a life-and-death struggle. The young group is desperately scrambling for refuge and self-preservation while an enemy they never knew existed unleashes its wrath against those remaining alive. Here at Dread Central we are supporters of all beliefs. As long as you don't try and push your stuff off on us, hey, whatever gets you through the day... even if you believe that one day you're just gonna magically go poof into thin air.

Deadline is reporting that Johnny Pacar (Flight 29 Down; pictured right) has joined The Remaining to play the lead Tommy in the movie. The character has a crush on his best friend’s fiancée in the feature. Donnie Darko producer Casey La Scala is directing, and Brad Luff is producing the Sony horror film. The Remaining features a Rapture-like event in which certain people are left behind to fend for themselves while the rest of the world... well... let's just say there's now a shortage of living and breathing people.

The flick is set to start shooting in North Carolina soon. More as it comes.

While 2012 has been a big year for movies, it also played host to some major box office bombs. Children's movie "Oogieloves In The Big Balloon Adventure" famously crashed-and-burned, taking the title for the lowest-grossing wide release of all time, Tyler Perry's critically panned "Alex Cross" made $10 million less than its budget, and Gerard Butler's surfing flick "Chasing Mavericks" saw a total gross of just $5 million.

But the film that made the absolute least money this year? A little movie by the name of "Playback," starring Christian Slater. The horror film showed for one week at one movie theater, earning a total gross of $264. "Playback" played the week of March 16 - 22. Calculations from The Daily Mail show that approximately 33 people bought tickets to the movie to reach this total.

While Christian Slater provided the main star power to "Playback," the film also featured Johnny Pacar ("Make It or Break It...

The end of calendar year is always the start of the awards season for movie fans, with critics' top 10 lists rolling out and award nominations being handed out. However, there are a few distinct honors that no film wants to receive. Today, Project X was named as the most downloaded movie of 2012, while the Christian Slater flop Playback was named the lowest grossing movie of the year, earning just $264 at the box office. Yes, just two hundred sixty-four dollars.

Playback was released in just one theater back in March, earning a paltry $252, adding another $12 the following week for a total domestic tally of $264. Oddly enough, though, The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure fared even worse, in terms of per-screen average. Michael Beach has booked a recurring role on the Lifetime series The Client List starring Jennifer Love Hewitt as a single mother working at a massage parlor. Beach will play the boyfriend of parlor owner Georgia (Loretta Devine), a former musician who owns the bar where she works. Beach, repped by Medavoy Management and Global Artists Agency, is recurring on FX’s Sons Of Anarchy and Bet’s The Game. Lela Loren (The Shield) has joined the cast of Lifetime’s two-hour original movie/backdoor pilot Stalkers as a regular. It follows Diane Harper (Drea de Matteo), a hot-headed cop with a troubled past, and a polished, ambitious Da (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe) who team up to bring a stalker (Mena Suvari), obsessed with her former lover (Loren), to justice. Magnet Releasing is one of those companies that horror & genre fans love. They do right by us by acquiring unique films and releasing them via VOD prior to a theatrical release. Then, if you miss those releases, soon after, they hit DVD, Blu-Ray and, usually, Netflix. Playback is one of those films that I meant to check out but never got the opportunity. However, since it is Magnet, I should have plenty of options to watch it now.

Did you know that one of the actors who plays a highschooler in Playback is thirty-one years old? Some kids get held back for several years in Michael Nickles' (Xii) latest film, Playback. Other random trivia involving this film is the quality: it is poor. Poor transitions between scenes, a floating disjointed soundtrack, and some really dark night shoots put this film in very bad territory. A story of the devil possessing souls through videotape does not even help.

The story begins: several friends begin shooting a film project for a journalism class. Their material is taken from a murder case occurring in the '90s that left four people dead. After doing more and more research, Julian (Johnny Pacar) discovers something about himself and something about the devil.

Playback Trailer. Michael A. Nickles‘ Playback (2012) movie trailer stars Christian Slater, Ambyr Childers, Johnny Pacar, Jonathan Keltz, and Alessandra Torresani. Playback‘s plot synopsis: “A cop investigates the case of a missing local teen, though he discovers a dark secret that has been unleashed in his town, and an evil spirit that will stop at nothing to find its heir.”

The possession sequences and the way Julian (Johnny Pacar) starts going after people, building a small army of the possessed is pretty cool.

Playback also stars Toby Hemingway, Jennifer Missoni, Daryl Mitchell, Kenny Stevenson, Abe Larkin, Dorien Davies, and Luke Bonczyk.

Video Services Corp. has recently released Nick Lyon's Zombie Apocalypse on DVD and Blu-Ray this past December 27th. This distribution house has provided two DVD copies to give away to two Canadian citizens over the age of fourteen. This contest closes Wednesday, January 5th and this film has been given high marks here at 28Dla.

Produced by The Asylum, Zombie Apocalypse involves a small group of survivors fighting across a zombie infested world in search of a safe port in Catalina. This reviewer noted the production qualities of this film in a review: "The Asylum seems to have pulled off one of their best pictures to date" (28Dla). 2012: Zombie Apocalypse or the simpler Zombie Apocalypse is a The Asylum production. The Asylum generally knocks off bigger productions e.g. Battle Los Angeles. Occasionally, they will come up with something original and this is great for the SyFy Network and their "SyFy Original Movie" premieres. Zombie Apocalypse aired on television Saturday, October 30th and this is a tale of survivors trying to get to Catalina. Unfortunately, there are a million zombies in their way and strangely, it looks like the same zombies are being killed over and over again.

Julian (Johnny Pacar), Ramona (Taryn Manning), Henry (Ving Rhames), Cassie (Lesley Ann-Brandt), Billy (Eddie Steeples), Mack (Gary Weeks) Kevin (Gerald Webb) and a few others team up to battle the undead after the "VM2" is released across the globe. The VM2 is a virus that infects the host and makes them uber violent.

Zombie movies are my favorite genre of horror films. George Romero's zombie films are great, and if you read the site you know I love The Walking Dead. SyFy aired Zombie Apocalypse last night, just in time for Halloween. Despite the simple story/script and lackluster visual effects, this made-for-tv-movie is better than most. It is a great example of a midnight movie and will meet the needs of any zombie fan looking to get into the Halloween spirit.

The film stars Ving Rhames (Mission: Impossible, Piranha 3D), Taryn Manning (8 Mile, Hustle & Flow), Lesley-Ann Brandt (Spartacus), Gary Weeks, Eric Steeples, Johnny Pacar and Geral Webb. The story takes place moths after a zombie apocalypse and follows a small group of survivors as they try to fight the zombie hordes to make it to a rumored safe haven on the island of Catalina.

Magnet have just picked up the rights to the Michael Nickle’s directed Playback. The movie stars Christian Slater as well as Toby Hemmingway, Johnny Pacar and Ambyr Childers and is set for a release through Magnet’s Ultra VOD in February of 2012. It will hit other VOD channels in March. I had a look at the trailer earlier, and have to say it looks quite promising. I’m just hoping Slater can keep his over-acting in check.
