A lifelong lover of art, Winterson's favorite museum is the Musée de Cluny in Paris (France).

She was awarded the O.B.E. (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2006 Queen's New Year's Honours List for her services to literature.

In the Independent on Sunday 2006 Pink List - a list of the most influential gay men and women - she came no. 46, up from no. 61.

Attended Oxford University with future actress/producer Vicky Licorish. She is godmother to Licorish's two daughters, Eleanor and Cara.

She was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2018 Queen's Birthday Honours List for her services to Literature. She is a writer in Gloucestershire, England.
