Reports have confirmed the development of Top Gun 3, with Tom Cruise returning to his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. The previous film, Top Gun: Maverick, turned out to be the highest-grossing film in Cruise’s career. A third film in the series would probably be incomplete without these young stars returning to their roles. However, bringing them would make the movie a very expensive affair, given their current star value. Pitt and Idris will actually drive the cars, according to director Joseph Kosinski. He and producer Jerry Bruckheimer sat down with Deadline for an exclusive Q+A ahead of the British Grand Prix. They filmed at the iconic Silverstone racetrack in the actual British Grand Prix. Other tracks featured will include Daytona, Hungary, Spa (Belgium), Monza (Italy), Zandvoort (Netherlands), Japan, Las Vegas, Abu Dhabi and Mexico City.

Seven-time F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton is also producing the film through his Apollo Dawn Films banner while he still races professionally.

“He’s the first person I contacted three years ago. I knew for us to make it as authentic as possible, someone on the team who lives it day-in and day-out would be invaluable,” Kosinski told Deadline. “Lewis has been an incredible partner; he jumps on Zooms with me between races to go through the script, line by line, turn by turn, you know, tire compound by tire compound, to make sure that we are getting all the details right. Beyond that, on a creative and story level, he also has input.”

Kosinski also shared that embedding into the racetracks to capture specific scenes while races are happening adds intensity to creating and completing the scenes. One scene at Silverstone had a 9-minute window to nail.

Pitt and Damson were trained for almost three months before getting in the movie-making vehicles. They started in Formula 3 cars before moving up to Formula 2 cars.

Working with Mercedes and Toto Wolff, team CEO, Co-Owner and Team Principal, the film’s team constructed modified Formula 2 cars with 15 camera mounts built into them to shoot films.

“They all complain that racing movies aren’t fast enough because usually when they build these cars, they’re movie cars. You know, they look right, but they aren’t real race cars,” Kosinski said. “At one of our first meetings, Toto said: ‘You should build this off a Formula 2 car, but make it look like a Formula 1 car,’ so it’s a Formula 2 chassis and engine. We worked closely with Mercedes and their design team and aerodynamicists to develop a custom body that resembles the latest generation Formula 1 car. They’re built specifically for this movie.

Kosinski also described the technology and equipment used to capture footage as “the next generation from what we did on Top Gun.”

“We have bespoke cameras for this that are very small and light so that they don’t impede the performance of the car too much and that’s key because you don’t want to have a race car and then put 200 pounds of gear on it. Our camera mounts were designed with Mercedes as well. The cameras are specially designed by Sony,” he said. “The big innovation is that we’re now able to control the movement of the cameras on the cars. We’re not locked into these kinds of fixed positions we had on Top Gun. Now we have real-time control of panning and focusing them while shooting through a very extensive Rf network that we’ve built around the tracks.”

Kosinski directs from Ehren Kruger’s script and produces alongside Bruckheimer. Bruckheimer said that Hamilton galvanized the film’s development.

“From Lewis, we got to Mercedes, from Mercedes, we got the car; if you approach it the right way it’s not as difficult as you think,” Bruckheimer told Deadline. “Then we went to Stefano [Domenicali, Formula One Group CEO], we went to [Fia President Mohammed Ben Sulayem], we went to the Principals of every team. We’ve met with all the drivers to tell them what we were doing. We met with just about everybody in Formula 1.”

A year after one case was dismissed, Paramount Pictures again finds itself in court in a lawsuit related to its 2022 blockbuster, Top Gun: Maverick. This time, the cousin of one of its credited screenwriters is suing the studio, alleging that he carried out uncredited – and unpaid – work on its script.

The lawsuit’s plaintiff is Shaun Gray, the cousin of screenwriter Eric Singer. Gray’s better known for his digital effects work on such films as Get Smart and Piranha 3D, but according to his complaint, Gray spent “five months” working on the Maverick script at the invitation of his cousin.

Maverick’s script was ultimately credited to Singer, Christopher McQuarrie and Ehren Kruger, but Gray alleges that he “wrote key scenes for the screenplay that became the film’s central edge-of-your-seat dramatic action sequences.

Shania Twain might not be impressed by F1 star Brad Pitt, but the same can’t be said for Formula One legend Lewis Hamilton.

“Watching Brad drive around speeds over 180 miles an hour was really impressive to see because it’s not something you can just learn overnight,” Hamilton said during a pretaped video that played for members of the press during a special presentation of the new F1 trailer (watch below) this week. “The dedication and the focus that Brad put into this process has been amazing to witness.”

Hamilton, a seven-time Formula One World Drivers’ champion, was intimately involved in the production of the upcoming movie. He’s one of several producers on the project, including Jerry Bruckheimer, and worked with filmmaker Joseph Kosinski to ensure F1 was as realistic as possible.

“He lives that sport every day. He’s one of the greatest of all time,” Kosinski said during the press conference.

I won't beat around the bush: "F1" looks rad as hell. Director Joseph Kosinski has reunited with producer Jerry Bruckheimer and screenwriter Ehren Kruger after working with them on the fantastic "Top Gun: Maverick," and it's obvious that they're looking to create something similar here set in the world of Formula 1 racing. 

There are recognizable archetypes and familiar rhythms to films like this -- charming leading man playing a guy whose best days are ostensibly behind him, hot love interest to inspire him on the sidelines, young up-and-comer representing the modern way of doing things, etc. -- and credit where it's due, Bruckheimer has built an incredible career making movies that are slight variations on that formula. When it's firing on all cylinders, there's a cathartic, satisfying, pump-your-fist quality to this type of moviemaking that feels like a throwback to a different era.

Tom Cruise will be returning for Top Gun 3 still, but development continues, a year after the new sequel was first confirmed.

We’re coming up to the third birthday of Top Gun: Maverick, a blockbuster that’s unlikely to ever be dislodged as the most successful of Tom Cruise’s career. In those three years since, director Joseph Kosinski has directed F1, which is finally set to arrive this summer. As for Cruise, he’s been working with writer and director Christopher McQuarrie on a pair of Mission: Impossible movies.

For the last year though, it’s been known that Paramount Pictures has a Top Gun 3 in development, and that Tom Cruise is set to play Maverick for a third time.

We’re some way away from James Bond development time territory here, but what’s interesting is there’s been no immediate rush to get Top Gun 3 before cameras.

After a year of development, Top Gun 3 is not quite ready for takeoff.

Jay Ellis, who plays Lt. Reuben ‘Payback’ Fitch in Top Gun: Maverick, recently gave an update on the third installment, which was Deadline reported was in the works at Paramount in January 2024.

“So here’s what the story’s going to be. It’s going to be Payback. No, no,” he jokingly told Us Weekly. “In all honesty, they’re still working on the script. They’re still working on the story. They’re wanting to get it right.”

Ellis added that co-star and producer Tom Cruise “is a stickler, and that really comes from him wanting to make sure the audience gets what they paid for and that they’re entertained. [So] that for those two hours, they can fully disappear in this theater, and the world around them doesn’t exist anymore, and [be] fully entertained.
