Now, Deadline reports that Gardner has made her scripted feature directorial debut with the horror dramedy Slay, which also happens to be the feature writing debut of actor Jimmi Simpson.

Director Kyra Elise Gardner — daughter of special effects legend Tony Gardner — has wrapped production on Slay, Deadline reports.
Written by actor Jimmi Simpson, the horror dramedy follows seven high school seniors whose weekend of backstabbing turns literal.
Zoey Luna (The Craft: Legacy), Aya Cash (“The Boys”), Shawnee Smith (Saw), Sean Giambrone (“The Goldbergs”), Maliina Weismann (A Series of Unfortunate Events), Beck Nolan, Reise Alexander, River Alexander (The Way Way Back), Talia Jackson (“Family Reunion”), and Ruby McCollister star.
“I wrote Slay about that moment in adolescence where you realize your friends know how to hurt you better than anyone else,” Simpson told Deadline. “Slay lives right there— but with sick music, jokes and stabbings.”
“I think horror, at its best, reveals what we can’t say out loud to each other,” Gardner added. “This movie let me explore that, not with cruelty but with character— through girls trying to be...

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Jimmi Simpson may not share Liam McPolye’s penchant for sleeping with his siblings, but the 48-year-old actor has still managed to ruffle feathers with his personal life, as his 27-year-old girlfriend, filmmaker Kyra Gardner, has had to come to his defense amid accusations of him having groomed her.
Gardner, the daughter of Hollywood special effects legend Tony Gardner, found her May-December romance in the hot seat last week after a TikTok video commemorating their 2022 meeting sparked backlash on social media. “She doesn’t know it yet, but she’ll meet the love of her life that night, and is actually looking at a photo of him on the paper she’s holding,” Gardner captioned a clip of her attending the Studio 666 premiere at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.

Heart Eyes is a winning romance and a killer slice of slasher movie fun. Not an easy balance to pull off. The team behind the hit—which made even more money in its second weekend at the box office—succeeded with sincerity. Not for a second do genres clash in the hands of director Josh Ruben and cinematographer Stephen Murphy.
Murphy is a seasoned pro behind the camera, having shot excellent episodes of Atlanta and Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Romantic comedies aren't usually in his wheelhouse, so Heart Eyes gave him the opportunity to stretch his talents and explore a new aesthetic.
Recently, Murphy spoke with Daily Dead about shooting a rom-com, crafting some lovely kills, and recalled his first gig on set—working with horror legend Stuart Gordon.
[Editor's Note: This interview covers major Heart Eyes plot points and spoilers.]
I assume you wanted to make every shot of Heart Eyes as dynamic as possible.

When it comes to slasher films, the iconography of the killer is often more important than the story. As long as fans are being given the chance to watch Michael Myers show up in his white-painted Captain Kirk finest to slaughter anyone who gets in his way, no one cares about trying to make sense of the the nonsensical and convoluted timeline of the "Halloween" franchise. Even people who have never watched a horror movie in their life could probably identify Jason Voorhees from "Friday the 13th" in his iconic hockey mask, or clock Leatherface from "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" even without his titular weapon. The look of a slasher villain should strike fear into the hearts of the audience ... but it should also be memorable enough to be marketable.
It's a delicate balance, and it's not the easiest thing in the world to pull off. The basic "sackhead...

What do you get when you mix Nora Ephron with Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Michael Myers? The combination might seem antithetical, but it works scarily well in director Josh Ruben‘s sweet, funny, terrifying rom-com/slasher movie mash-up, “Heart Eyes.”
Working from an inventive script by Phillip Murphy, Christopher Landon, and Michael Kennedy, Ruben somehow deftly satisfies fans of both “Sleepless in Seattle” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” An iconic new horror villain is born in the form of the movie’s Heart Eyes Killer, a slasher who stalks young lovers each Valentine’s Day.
Ruben, as he explained to IndieWire, wanted the movie’s two sides to be equally strong so that the horror would deepen the romance made all the more terrifying because of our investment in the two young lovers (Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding) fleeing from the Heart Eyes Killer. In studying films of both genres,...

Forty years ago, writer/director Dan O’Bannon delivered one of the most highly entertaining zombie movies of all time with The Return of the Living Dead (watch it Here). A company called Living Dead Media LLC claims to own the copyright to the original screenplay and the underlying script for that film, as well as other trademarks, which is how they’re able to move ahead with a new Return of the Living Dead film that’s aiming for a Christmas 2025 release. But last year, a new company called Rotld Originals LLC was formed, with Return of the Living Dead cast member Beverly Randolph, a.k.a. Beverly Dawn Hartley, signing the formation document. It has since been revealed that Rotld Originals LLC is teaming up with DRagonSTUDIOS, a company that owns the trademarks to The Return of the Living Dead and Rotld Universe, for a movie project called Trash’s Revenge,...

Brains! That's what it takes to make a good zombie movie these days. While the horror genre had a renaissance in the early 2000s, the leg-dragging flesh feasters have waned in popularity recently. Writer/Director Steve Wolsh of Living Dead Media is hoping to turn that around with a holiday twist on the Return of The Living Dead franchise. While details on the production are scant, Wolsh is getting some interesting pieces in order.
Wolsh spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and said that the film won't be a reboot but a sequel to the 1985 original, directed by Dan O’Bannon, and called the installment "a brand new adventure." He also confirmed that this film will use practical effects and real locations instead of greenscreen, which some may argue has robbed the potency and visceral power of the zombie genre in this century. Almost forty years ago, writer/director Dan O’Bannon delivered one of the most highly entertaining zombie movies of all time with The Return of the Living Dead (watch it Here)… and in the process, spawned a franchise. There was the goofy comedy of The Return of the Living Dead Part II, the “Romeo and Juliet with zombies” love story Return of the Living Dead ///, and a couple sequels nobody paid much attention to, Return of the Living Dead: Necropolis and Return of the Living Dead: Rave to the Grave. The franchise has been dormant for nineteen years – but last year, it was announced that Muck and Kill Her Goats director Steve Wolsh, who also happens to be the CEO of the company Living Dead Media, was developing a reboot of The Return of the Living Dead. Yesterday, it was announced that a teaser trailer for the reboot would be dropping online today…...

After five films and a 20-year break, the Return of the Living Dead franchise returns next Christmas with a brand new sequel to the original classic, and we’ve got the teaser trailer.
From Living Dead Media and director Steve Wolsh (Muck, Kill Her Goats), the Christmas-themed sequel Return of the Living Dead will be shambling our way for Christmas 2025.
This footage shows the iconic Return of the Living Dead zombie known as Tarman dragging a Christmas tree through a cemetery as a blizzard rages around him. Watch below.
The new story takes place in a small Pennsylvania town over Christmas, and it’s set in 1985, 18 months after the events of the original film. “Fans of the film will know not to expect to see any returning characters, given their terrible fates in the original,” Living Dead Media explains. Along with most Horror franchises that skyrocketed in the ’80s, Child’s Play had plummeted by the mid ’90s. But in 1996, Scream became a pivotal moment for the genre. Wes Craven’s self-referential slasher helped revive mainstream interest in Horror. And it gave birth to a new wave of slashers that featured characters with smarter dialogue, who made less stupid decisions (for the most part), and delivered the all-important meta humor. That wave included a bride, mostly dressed in black leather. Bride of Chucky checked all the boxes of the updated slasher formula, especially when it came to the satire. Sometimes, the most simple movie monsters can become the most terrifying, especially when it comes to gruesome kills and excellent practical effects. The eponymous monster in 1988’s The Blob, directed by Chuck Russell from a script he co-wrote with Frank Darabont, acts as a giant slithering stomach, dissolving its food for digestion with extreme acidity. There’s no trace of intelligence in the amoeba-like entity; it’s just an insatiable need to feed. That means that not only is the body count high for this ever-growing creature, but the deaths are deliciously mean-spirited and unforgettable thanks to gruesome special makeup effects from Tony Gardner and an incredible team of artists.
Russell and Darabont reinforce the SFX showcase with unpredictability and meticulous characterization to ensure that not only do the character deaths look painful, but they also hurt emotionally. It’s not just the creature effects that make the Blob’s...

Totally Killer has been praised for its innovative plot and mix of slasher elements with comedy and sci-fi. The killer's mask in the film was chosen meticulously to feel unique, scary, and relevant, inspired by 80s heartthrobs like Kiefer Sutherland and Rob Lowe. The movie follows teenager Jamie as she goes back to 1987 to prevent the murders, teaming up with her young mother, and trying to return to the present before being trapped forever.
The hit horror film from Amazon Prime Video Totally Killer is being praised by critics, subscribers of the platform and fans of the genre alike, thanks to its innovative plot and its fun mix of slasher elements with comedy and science fiction. One of the key features of the film is the killer's mask, an element that has been present in this type of movies for years, so director Nahnatchka Khan put some extra thought into choosing it.

Chucky continues his reign of terror in the White House, hungry for power and bloodlust as he terrorizes the residents. Sid Armour, head of the makeup department, reveals a fun Easter egg involving Jennifer Tilly's makeup and teases Halloween at the White House. The show balances realism with the fantastical and maintains authenticity in creating killer makeups, while the actors bring both a scary and laughable element to the series.
Jake Wheeler, his boyfriend Devon Evans, and their friend Lexy Cross continue to try and stop Chucky's schemes in the third season of Chucky. The killer doll has made his way to Washington, DC, to plant himself with the first family in the White House. Hungry for more power and an unquenchable bloodlust, Chucky will continue his rampage as he terrorizes the residents of the White House.

Your new favorite slasher movie is here. And its name is “Totally Killer.”
After a rapturous reception at its world premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin and ahead of a screening as part of Los Angeles’ Beyond Fest, “Totally Killer” will be available on Prime Video this Friday.
The movie tells the story of Jamie (Kiernan Shipka), a plucky teenager who uses a time machine to travel back to 1987 in an attempt to save her mother (who was killed in the present) and several of her mother’s friends (killed in 1987) – all at the hands of a masked murderer known as the Sweet Sixteen Killer. While in the 1980s she befriends the younger version of her mother (played in the past by Olivia Holt and in the present by Julie Bowen) and alters the timeline in some surprising ways.

Blumhouse and Universal's "Five Nights at Freddy's" movie is looking more and more like it has the makings of being the reason for the Halloween season, and a big part of the allure is seeing the larger-than-life animatronics of Foxy, Bonnie, Chica, and Freddy Fazbear in live-action. The fearsome foursome of Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria (home to child murder and possessed robot animals) represents the introduction to horror for a new generation, so it was important that no shortcuts were taken in bringing them all to life. Fortunately, the creative team behind "FNaF" went above and beyond by enlisting the services of the legendary Jim Henson's Creature Shop. With the help of some of the very best in the biz, all of the animatronics look character-correct ... and downright terrifying.
While the "FNaF" baddies could have very easily stayed as digital creations as they debuted in Scott Cawthon's video games,...

Death is the ultimate leveler. It comes for everyone in the end, no matter your station in life. Never is that more unsettlingly apparent than in 1988’s The Blob, directed by Chuck Russell from a script he co-wrote with Frank Darabont. The creature feature lets loose a gelatinous pink blob of goo upon the small town of Arborville, California, where it wreaks havoc with its insatiable appetite. It doesn’t care about archetypical hero or villain roles; its sole aim is to devour.
The eponymous Blob acts as a giant slithering stomach, dissolving its food for digestion with extreme acidity. That means that not only is the body count high for this ever-growing creature, but the deaths are deliciously mean-spirited and unforgettable thanks to gruesome special makeup effects from Tony Gardner and an incredible team of artists. Russell and Darabont reinforce the SFX showcase with unpredictability and meticulous characterization to...

We don't talk enough about how 1958's "The Blob" and 1988's remake makes for one of the best original/remake combinations. They're both time capsules of societal paranoias from their respective eras. One is about a Pleasantville town banding together to defeat an outsider invader — the next is a government conspiracy flick about corruption within official departments. The '50s film plays around with a cranberry jelly-lookin' monster and cutting-edge photography tricks of the time that could manage such freaky sci-fi effects, while the '80s update enlists future SFX gurus like Tony Gardner to pull off awe-striking gelatinous carnage. Director Chuck Russell helped shape the future of practical-driven horror, showing what all-star craftsmanship can accomplish that digital animation will never touch.
In 1988's "The Blob," multiple scenes douse viewers with buckets of heebie-jeebies. Russell's Blob is a man, woman, and child eater that disintegrates flesh with its acidic slime — and we see it all.

Documentary profile of the interconnections behind the past and current makers of the long-running franchise is bit of a love-in
“The family that slays together stays together” finishes this blow-by-blow retrospective of the Child’s Play/Chucky franchise, and it’s certainly impossible to contest that. Not only does the homicide-happy doll gain his own family during the course of the seven films, but actor Brad Dourif – who voiced him – has been succeeded by daughter Fiona as the head of proceedings, and this documentary is directed by Kyra Elise Gardner, daughter of current head puppeteer Tony Gardner. The close-knit ethos might well explain the franchise’s gleefully perverse sense of fun, but the truth is this love-in features too much filler.
Gardner charts Chucky’s progress from straight-up malefic totem through camp horror icon to revitalised golden-age bogeykid, all under the supervision of creator and series writer Don Mancini (who...

From the creepy ventriloquist’s doll in Dead of Night, to M3gan and The Boy, via The Conjuring and Child’s Play, dolls have made a consistently chilling contribution to the horror genre
The Child’s Play franchise, as with all the best slasher series, is all about the villain. The “Good Guy” doll is occupied by the soul of a serial killer, and thanks to his being voiced by the great Brad Dourif (one of the few actors to take on a slasher movie role after they became famous), has more personality than the likes of Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers laid end to end.
Now Chucky can add a documentary to his ever expanding filmography. “I do remember Chucky being at my birthday parties,” says Kyra Elise Gardner, whose father, Tony Gardner, has been the franchise’s head puppeteer for the past two decades. Her film, Living with Chucky,...

As the daughter of Chucky franchise special effects artist Tony Gardner, director Kyra Elise Gardner offers a unique perspective on the killer doll’s lasting impact in the Screambox Original documentary Living with Chucky.

In the late ‘80s, writer Don Mancini came up with a strange script about a friendly-looking doll coming to life and terrorizing a family. That story would be used by director Tom Holland to create Child’s Play, one of history's most influential horror movies. Over three decades, Mancini helped release six sequels and a successful TV show that’s getting a third season this year. After all this time, Chucky became more than a horror icon as the killer turned into a highly recognizable pop culture symbol that crossed the boundaries of genre cinema to inhabit our nightmares forever. Love it or hate it, it’s hard to argue that Chucky has touched the lives of millions of fans worldwide. But what about the people who made the franchise? How did Chucky shape their personal experiences? Written and directed by Kyra Elise Gardner, daughter of special effects legend Tony Gardner,...

In the clip from Living With Chucky you’ll find below, Jennifer Tilly recalls her introduction to the killer doll that she’d end up becoming intimately familiar with. It’s hard to imagine there was a time in the franchise’s history when Tilly wasn’t in the mix, as Bride of Chucky and the subsequent films – and television series – cemented her status as a true icon of the saga.

Screen Rant is thrilled to present a new clip from the upcoming film Living With Chucky, a documentary that explores the beloved Child's Play franchise. The film comes from the mind of Kyra Elise Gardner, the daughter of special effects artist and Chucky puppeteer Tony Gardner. Inspired by growing up alongside the iconic horror series, Living With Chucky features interviews with key players like Jennifer Tilly, Brad Dourif, and many more.
In 2017, Kyra Gardner released a Child's Play retrospective called The Dollhouse which explored similar themes. However, the short film was only seven minutes long, while the upcoming release will be a feature-length picture. Living With Chucky will have much more time to delve into personal interviews, the cultural impact of the franchise, and the way Chucky's character impacted not just Gardner's life, but everyone involved with the films.
