Makoto Yukimura’s most epic tale, Vinland Saga, is no ordinary series. It’s a result of countless hours of exhaustive research and passion that has brought its storytelling to an unprecedented level of historical accuracy. By weaving historical figures such as Thorfinn, Leif, and Thorkell the Tall into the series’ plotlines, Yukimura takes readers to an unforgiving yet fascinating world of the Vikings Era.

Vinland Saga tells one of the most compelling stories ever known in the history of any entertainment medium, and not just anime. Its masterfully woven narrative rivals and arguably even surpasses other Western adaptations of the Viking era. It also boasts its meticulous attention to historical detail and nuanced character writing.

Now, what’s even more interesting is that some of the most important characters from the series are all inspired by certain historical figures in real life. Among such characters, there is particularly one who is basically the central attraction of this saga, Thorfinn. However, surprisingly, Thorfinn Karlsefni’s life goals are completely different from the anime’s depiction of him as a revengeful warrior.

If you’re looking for a new addictive Western drama now that “Yellowstone” is headed toward its final episodes, Netflix has delivered “Territory” just in time. The Australian succession drama stars Anna Torv, Michael Dorman and Robert Taylor in a sprawling saga about the fight for power and coveted land in the outback.
Set in the vast wilderness of Australia’s Top End, “Territory” follows the generational battle between rival cattle barons, lawless cattle thieves, Indigenous elders and billionaire miners. Fighting for land and cattle, the six-episode series is centered on the Lawson family, who runs Marrianne Station, the world’s biggest cattle station, and has to fend off encroaching forces at every side.
A generational Western epic, “Territory” has a vast ensemble cast to match. If you’re trying to keep track of the Lawsons, Hodges, Kirbys and more — and who plays them — here’s the “Territory” cast and character guide you need.

An archaeologist assesses the historical accuracy of Vikings and Vikings: Valhalla, explaining what the shows get wrong. Airing on the History Channel for six seasons from 2013 to 2020, Vikings follows Ragnar Lothbrok (Alexander Ludwig) and his companions in the 8th century as they explore and do battle. The world of the show would then return as a Netflix original with Vikings: Valhalla, which takes place 100 years later and chronicles the adventures of Leif Erikson (Sam Corlett), Freydis Eriksdotter (Frida Gustavsson), and other historical figures, and the hardships they endure.
In a recent video for Wired, archaeologist Cat Jarman responds to a question on social media regarding the historical accuracy of Vikings and Vikings: Valhalla. Jarman reveals that the two shows are "not very accurate," though many of the characters and events are inspired by those in real history. She singles out the shows' depiction of Lagertha's (Katheryn Winnick) all-female army as...

Vikings: Valhalla ended with its third season, leaving many loose ends and big storylines unexplored, but it also robbed the audience of the biggest and best Ragnar replacement. After the success of Vikings, the show expanded with a sequel series titled Vikings: Valhalla, set over a hundred years after the events of Vikings season 6. As such, Vikings: Valhalla followed new characters with different backgrounds and goals, though all of them connected through their Viking heritage. Vikings: Valhalla covered the final years of the Viking Age, beginning with the St. Brices Day Massacre.
Vikings: Valhalla followed siblings Leif Erikson (Sam Corlett) and Freydis Eirksdttir (Frida Gustavsson), who meet Harald Sigurdsson (Leo Suter) when they arrive in Kattegat. The three become very close, and they team up with King Canute (Bradley Freegard) and against Haralds half-brother, Olaf Haraldsson (Jhannes Hawker Jhannesson), all this with the conflict between Christians and pagans as the backdrop.

Given that the two historical TV shows explore similar themes of religion, identity, and nationality, some people have been wondering if The Last Kingdom and Vikings are connected. Although it has been around for some time, the 2010s saw an increasing interest in the historical fiction genre. Vikings was one of the shows at the heart of this trend as many people were intrigued by the lore and characters (especially Ragnar and Lagertha). They also couldn't get enough of the engaging blood-filled battle sequences and engaging storylines.
With the series proving to be a huge success, it wasn't all that surprising then when many streaming platforms and channels began creating shows that were quite similar to Vikings. While many of these shows were fantastic, The Last Kingdom was one that particularly drew the attention of Vikings' fans as it seemed to follow a similar structure, contain real-life historical figures, and...

When Netflix's hugely popular Vikings: Valhalla ended, it left me dissatisfied by some of its loose ends. The Vikings spinoff based its main characters on real figures from 11th-century Europe, such as the famed Viking explorer, Leif Erikson, and Canute, the Viking king of England. While Valhalla repeated Vikings lack of historical accuracy, it contained many subtle nods that only history buffs would pick up on. One of these centered around Earl Godwin, Canute's scheming advisor. Along with his heirs, Godwin had a major role to play in an important period of English history.
I became fascinated by this character ever since the shocking scene where Godwin killed King Edmund. Unlike Valhalla's more brutal warlord antagonists, Godwin relied on cunning, surreptitiously pulling strings to bring about his ultimate dream: to see his son become the king of England. Netflix's disappointing decision to end Vikings: Valhalla after season 3 meant...

Vikings and Vikings: Valhalla have been among the most popular historical action shows of the past decade, and surprisingly historically accurate in parts, with many Vikings characters based on real people. I was hooked from the beginning to the end. The ending of Vikings season 6 disappointed some fans who would have preferred a last dramatic vision of the characters together in Valhalla, though I disagree. I thought Vikings chose the perfect note to end on.
Ubbe and Floki could have changed America for Leif, in a Vikings: Valhalla sequel.
The peaceful ending scene which saw Ubbe in North America, reminiscing with Floki, one of the original Vikings characters to last the series, had me, as a spin-off skeptic, ready to say goodbye to Vikings, but after watching Vikings: Valhalla, which follows a new set of warriors, I need something I have never asked for - a sequel. "Vinland Saga" brings the era of the Vikings to the realm of anime. The titular "Vinland" is the name that Viking explorer Leif Erikson gave to North America after reaching its shores, and in the series, that far off land represents a wish to escape to a better place than where you currently stand. The show is set in the early 11th century during the Danish subjugation of England, and explores how someone could become a pacifist in such a violent world.

Vikings: Valhalla is a spiritual sequel to the hit show Vikings, and since the show is set over a century after the events of the original show, a brand new set of characters is introduced to tell this story. The show premiered in February 2022 and is available on Netflix, with a new season premiering every year. Season 3, reportedly coming out sometime in 2024, is confirmed to be the last, leading the conflict between the descendants of the Vikings and the English to an epic conclusion.
Although Vikings: Valhalla is set over 100 years after the events of Vikings, the impact of the actions and values of warriors like Ragnar Lothbrok, Bjrn Ironside, and Ivar the Boneless still have a great effect on the Viking community. The show chronicles the adventures of Leif Erikson, Freydis Eriksdotter, and Harald Sigurdsson as the world they knew collapses under a battle of military control and religious influence.

The third and final season of the Netflix show “Vikings: Valhalla” takes us even deeper into the world of the fierce Viking warriors. This season introduces new details from real Viking history and some shocking plot twists that will surprise fans.
Early in the season, two fan-favorite characters – Leif Erikson and Harald Sigurdsson – join an elite fighting group called the Varangian Guard. This Guard protected the Byzantine Empire, which was a very powerful kingdom at the time. Serving in the Guard shows how Leif and Harald have developed their fighting skills in the seven years since leaving their Norwegian homeland. We see them help seize an important city in Sicily, impressing their Byzantine leader in the process.
However, their success causes jealousy from one of the Empire’s top generals, who wants power for himself. This feud sets off a dramatic chain of events, with Harald getting thrown in prison after being framed for murder!

Plenty of viewers praised the “damn good” storytelling and incredible performances that kept them on the edge of their seats the whole time. But the way the show handled Leif’s storyline, especially his big discovery of North America, was a major point of debate.

Harald Sigurdsson's journey in Vikings: Valhalla diverges from the real-life events surrounding his rise to power. Vikings: Valhalla inaccurately portrays Harald and King Canute as allies seeking vengeance. Harald fulfilled his ambition of becoming King of Norway and even attempted to claim the English throne, but was ultimately killed in battle.
Harald Sigurdsson (Leo Suter) was one of the main characters in Vikings: Valhalla, which followed his journey to claim the throne of Norway. Set over 100 years after the events of Vikings season 6, Vikings: Valhalla explores some of the most notable stories from the final years of the Viking Age. With the conflict between pagans and Christians as the backdrop, Vikings: Valhalla follows siblings Leif Erikson (Sam Corlett) and Freydis (Frida Gustavsson), Prince Harald Sigurdsson, King Canute of Denmark (Bradley Freegard), and Queen Emma of Normandy (Laura Berlin).

Emma of Normandy is a descendant of Vikings' Rollo. Emma became queen of England, Denmark, and Norway through her marriages. Emma of Normandy passed away in 1052.
Vikings: Valhalla introduced Emma of Normandy, queen of England, whos related to Vikings Rollo, but the show made changes to her story. As the sequel series to Vikings, Vikings: Valhalla is set over 100 years after the events of the main series, and as such, it follows different characters in a completely different context. With the conflict between pagans and Christians as the backdrop, Vikings: Valhalla followed Leif Erikson (Sam Corlett), Freydis (Frida Gustavsson), Harald Sigurdsson (Leo Suter), King Canute (Bradley Freegard), and Emma of Normandy.
Emmas story in Vikings: Valhalla began with the death of her husband, King Aethelred, and her stepson, Edmund, becoming king. After the fall of London Bridge, King Canute crowned himself the first Viking King of England and married Emma.

Freydis was Erik the Red's daughter but it's unclear if she was Leif's full sister based on conflicting sagas. Freydis in Vikings: Valhalla trained as a shield-maiden, a role not explicitly mentioned in the sagas. Vikings: Valhalla significantly altered Freydis' story to fit the narrative, exploring the clash between Christianity and Norse beliefs through her.
Vikings: Valhalla features many characters based on real-life historical figures from the Viking Age, among them Freydis (Frida Gustavsson), but the show made many changes and additions to her story. Leif Erikson, was a Norse explorer born in the 970s in Iceland and the son of Erik the Red. Leif Erikson is known for his journey to North America, which he reached by accident when blown off course while on his way to Greenland to introduce Christianity. The exact date of Leif Erikson's death is unknown, but he is believed to have died between 1018 and 1025.
Vikings: Valhalla introduced viewers to Leif Erikson (Sam Corlett), but it made many changes to the story of this legendary explorer. Leif Erickson was one of those rare characters in Vikings: Valhalla who did not crave to be in power or rule over an empire, unlike his counterparts. His goals, aims, and ambitions in life were very different from those of Harald and Freydis. He had sailed to Kattegat from Greenland together with his sister Freydis, and at that moment, if anybody had asked him, he wouldn’t have been able to tell where his destiny was going to take him. In Vikings: Valhalla, I believe, there were two events that changed the course of Leif’s life. The first event that impacted Leif in ways he couldn’t imagine was the arrival of Mariam in his life, a woman he met in Novgorod, and the second was the killing of innocent Arabs by Maniakes, the Byzantine Emperor’s second in command. These two events changed Leif’s perception and opinion...

From the moment Vikings: Valhalla began, it was clear we were headed for a bittersweet series finale, whenever said finale was set to occur. There's a particular flavor these sorts of stories have, the ones set at a major turning point in history, the outcome of which is well-known to the audience. When executed well, these types of stories will have the audience rooting for the characters against all odds, and against the knowledge that this is not going to go the way the characters anticipated. Vikings: Valhalla Season 3 is pure proof that the tale of Leif Erikson (Sam Corlett), Freydis Erksdttir (Frida Gustavsson) and Harald Sigurdson (Leo Suter) is one such story, and one that is beautifully told from start to finish.

As a medium, anime is commonly associated with fantastical, over-the-top stories that exaggerate reality greatly. The tendency of anime to push the boundaries of imagination is reflected in the types of shows that have always been the most popular - supernatural shonen, sci-fi, dark fantasy, and many other genres unrestricted by what is possible in reality. As such, historical fiction is rare to come by in anime, and even more scarce are series that portray their chosen historical settings and events accurately.
While historical symbols, characters, and events pop up constantly in anime and manga, most works use them emblematically, giving samurai superpowers or throwing feudal nobles into isekai worlds. Even series that strife for some level of historical exactness incorporate fictitious elements into their narratives, which is true for most historical fiction. When Herbert Kline, Hans Burger, and Alexander Hammid’s Crisis: A Film of the Nazi Way premiered in New York City on March 11, 1939, agitprop was largely affiliated with European styles of theater, literature, and film that confronted viewers and readers with political messages. The Soviets in particular helped to define this mode of art in conjunction with the Russian Revolution and its aftermath. Crisis, though, introduced a new form of agitprop that combined the style of an expository documentary with the exigency of a newsreel.
The film documents the circumstances that led to the occupation of Czechoslovakia, beginning with images of maps and narration by American actor Leif Erickson before portraying daily life in Prague. Crisis abounds in luminous shots of Prague’s many cathedrals and castles, presenting the city as a thriving, peaceful place that will shortly be uprooted by Nazi infiltration.

The adaptation based on the seminal 1975 James Clavell novel struck all the right chords with audiences, deftly addressing the historical aspect of the Japanese Empire in the 16th century combined with rich and compelling main characters. There is a Jeb Stuart-created historical period piece on Netflix that does a similarly outstanding job of relating a pivotal time in Norse history while also interweaving terrific interpersonal relationships between a trio of main characters: Leif Erikson (Sam Corlett), Freydis Eriksdotter (Frida Gustavsson), and Harald Sigurdsson (Leo Suter).

Ubbe reaching North America in Vikings isn't historically accurate but fits the show's themes. Leif Erikson, not Ubbe, is widely believed to be the first Viking to reach North America. Historical inaccuracies in Vikings include misrepresenting the true stories of the Norse people.
Ragnar's son Ubbe reached North America by the time Vikings concluded, playing on historical evidence that the Nordic warriors were the first to make contact with the continent, arriving centuries before Christopher Columbus. However, the truth of the Vikings reaching "The Golden Land" is a little more complex than the show depicted, especially when it comes to Ubbe. As the History Channel show drew to a close, Ragnar Lothbrok's second-eldest son became the first Viking to reach North America, landing on the shores of Newfoundland after a detour to Greenland and a harrowing journey across the sea.

Vikings: Valhalla has been a hit since its debut, spending a total of eight weeks in the top 10 most-watched TV shows on Netflix in the US. The streaming data shows that there is still a huge demand for Vikings: Valhalla, with over 300 million combined viewing hours in just a six-month period in 2023. Vikings: Valhalla is coming to an end with its third season, and it must address Canute's storyline and tie up loose ends. Canute, although not a main character, played a big role in season 1 as leader of the Viking army and King of England. Season 3 needs to explain Canute's actions in Denmark between seasons 1 and 2, explore his marriage with Emma, and address his promise to Harald.

For over 20 years now, author Makoto Yukimira's hit seinen manga Vinland Saga has thrilled audiences around the world with its philosophical and often subversive take on the concept of medieval epics. Set in the Viking Age, during the time of Danish conquests in the British Isles, Vinland Saga has plenty of gore and action — but it also has deep and resonant themes about revenge, forgiveness, and finding one's own purpose in life.
Any seinen manga/anime franchise can splatter blood all over the pages at swordpoint, but only an intricate and deceptively emotional series like Vinland Saga can keep viewers engaged with what happens between the battle scenes or even what happens instead of action sequences. Anyone who's looking for a thought-provoking seinen story with gorgeous art and unexpectedly relatable characters is encouraged to dive right into Vinland Saga's open arms.
