There are a few subplots as well, one is a boy on the Dark side who is actually the son of a Light One; a Dark One who is the wife of the head of the Dark Ones and she becomes enamored of a younger man; a monk who guards the "Chalk of Fate" which is part of the main story line; and also the rivalry between the heads of both the Dark and Light Ones and how they interact with their followers. It all comes to a head at the birthday party of the Dark One son of the Light One. The boy is also a "Great One" and also uses his power to try to start a war by attacking Sveta without drawing blood.
