Filmmaker Shuchi Talati creates a beautiful, tender and complex story on exploring female sexuality, culture, and mother & daughter relationship with strong performances, great camerawork, and ambitious writing. Talati's writing and direction felt genuine, sweet and nature on capturing the characters interactions and personalities that were well-developed and interesting and approaching the themes and cultures of India with sweet tenderness and complexity.
The camerawork shooting in 4:3 aspect ratio felt purposeful and helped create the atmosphere of the setting. Many of the performances are really good and the characters are interesting as I felt genuine connection and investment to the characters. You are able to get engagement, connection and understanding of many of the characters and the mother and daughter aspects were strong. Good costumes and production designs throughout as well.
The only gripe I have is that I felt certain aspects were a little too long and could have been shorten.
Art-house India cinema is interesting as they are not something I have often seen but Girls Will Be Girls is likely going to be my newest favorite art-house India movie.

Well, I haven't watched any of Shuchi Talati's short films yet, so this is my first exposure to her work. And I must say, she exhibits the finesse of a seasoned filmmaker in the coming-of-age drama genre. She's able to extract exceptional performances from her lead trio (Preeti Panigrahi, Kani Kusruti, Kesav Binoy Kiron) and offer very nuanced takes on a conflicting mother-daughter relationship, a teenage romance that gradually leads to sexual awakening, and a mother who's yet to truly come of age herself. I'm not one to complain of its unhurried pacing, minimalist score (the lack of which actually contributes more to certain scenes), and English-speaking characters in mostly non-English-speaking environments.
The boarding school setting does feel like it's part of a distinct universe, but the emotions portrayed in the film are very candid and honest. I particularly loved the plot progression-Mira's urge to understand (and quench) her sexual needs, being heckled by some of her peers at school, trying to avert her boyfriend from giving too much attention to her mother, and figuring out whether her love is just "puppy love" or "big-dog love." When a film doesn't offer answers to every question, it leaves room for further thought. Girls Will Be Girls deserves a lot more attention in my eyes.

The movie is well crafted and acted. All actors were nice and were able to evoke the right emotions in the viewers.
It took us back to our school days when we first time experience bully, sexual development and how to control it. We didnt knew.
I was into the movie, found almost all the technicalities to be near perfect. How the boy and girl meet and come together. Of course it was the pre smartphone era, how to they exchanged numbers and the intricate plan to call, I am sure it brought a nostalgic memory to so many 90s kinds. It really hit the right cord. Totally loved it.
In simple, its a story about how a girl in her school days discovers about her sexuality. I must appreciate the director and the writer for this movie.

A beautiful tale portraying the insecurities, foibles, whims and fancies of a young girl through a realistic template.
The story moves through the life of a young obedient high school girl developing an infatuation and how the mother diplomatically brings her teenage daughter to a stage of self realisation about the fantasies and immature behaviour in a teenage girl.
Shuchi Talati has conceived a sublime thought for the movie and has executed it perfectly onto the screen. She has effortlessly taken the viewers through contents like sexuality, sex education, self pleasure, self exploration and immature relationships through intricate moments that can be well connected by everyone who have passed through that life stage. The intriguing screenplay has kept the audience completely attached to the screens with exemplary performances from the central characters.
Splendid performance by Preeti Panigrahi showing raw emotions from love, excitement and anxiety to lost, void and conflict. Subtle performance by Kani Kusruthi as a caring mother. Impressive performances were made by Kesav Binoy,Devika Shahani & Kajol Chugh.
Special mention to the Cinematographer, the editor & the casting director for their effort in giving this timeless visual craft.
The audience after closure of the movie may feel that whether Shuchi has given the title to the movie on a pessimistic note. A great movie that is worth watching to cherish your adolescence fantasies and mischievousness.

Absolutely obsessed with Shuchi's work-what an incredible talent! I loved "Girls Will Be Girls" from start to finish. There were some truly scream-out-loud moments (I even got shushed in the theatre at Sundance London). The sharp social commentary on mother-daughter relationships was brilliantly executed (the chai scenes broke my wee heart). The 'realness' of young female sexual awakening (the teddy scene) was amazing as it's so rarely seen on screen! The characters were complex and relatable, making the story both engaging and thought-provoking. I can't wait to watch and analyze it all over again. The cinematography, in particular, was exceptional, capturing the nuances of each scene beautifully. Shuchi has truly crafted a masterpiece with this film.

The coming of age process is different for everyone, and that's especially true for those of different generations. Those who underwent this rite of passage years ago, however, arguably may have faced more challenges and restrictions than what's present in these more liberated and open-minded times, and such individuals may be somewhat envious of the privileges that have been afforded their younger counterparts. That's very much the case with Anila (Kani Kusruti) and her teenage daughter, Mira (Preeti Panigrahi), who has (or at least should have) a comparatively easier time with this than her mother did. Nevertheless, Anila still expects Mira to conform to the rigid standards of her own youth, enrolling her in a strict Himalayan boarding school and hovering around her like an overprotective helicopter parent, particularly when she befriends a young man, Sri (Kesav Binoy Kiron), who becomes a budding - if severely restricted - romantic interest. Despite these constraints, though, Mira is supremely curious to clandestinely explore her emerging sexuality and female drives while at least superficially maintaining the image of propriety expected of a young Indian girl. Matters become further complicated, however, when Anila takes more than a passing supervisory interest in her daughter's new beau, a dynamic that produces added friction between mother and daughter. As if adolescence weren't complicated enough in itself, these circumstances raise the tension level inside the family household, in the relationship between the two youngsters and in the mind of someone who's trying to figure out her life under conditions fraught with confusion, contradiction, constraint and more than a few double standards. Writer-director Shuchi Talati's debut feature takes a nuanced, mature look at what can often be a baffling time of life, one that's made even more complex by the potent influences impacting it. The film tends to fizzle somewhat as it approaches its conclusion, almost as if the director doesn't quite know how to wrap up the story. But that doesn't hinder the production overall when it comes to covering some previously unexplored fertile ground when it comes to a subject that's often handled tritely and riddled with clichés. This recipient of two Independent Spirit Awards - for Kusruti's supporting performance and as a candidate for the competition's John Cassavetes Award - definitely makes a mark among 2024's releases, even if, as the premiere offering from a new filmmaker, it could use some shoring up at times. That aside, though, "Girls Will Be Girls" is an impressive start for a promising new auteur, one well worth streaming online. Indeed, through this work, audiences may never view the coming of age process in quite the same way ever again.

The movie has your attention from the first scene, they get everything right the casting, the location, the costumes, everything!!, But this movie takes its time to build up to what it's trying to tell you. How a young
girl Mira is exploring her sexuality and love in this patriarchal world. Yet, it is one of the best school romances made in India.
Plot of th movie revolves around Mira, the head prefect of her school, she dealing to meet with her, her parents and her teacher's expectations of her school results, maintaining a decipline in her school irrespective of them being her friends but at the same time she is exploring herself. This coming of age movie is similar to most coming of age movies but has got almost everything right!!
I am stealing: every one has their key, you just need to find them, and ofcourse the school romance, the tention of the first kiss.

If " Boys will be Boys " is true then " Girls Will Be Girls " should equally be true. This movie more or less proves this and this is admirably done collectively by a talented girls team of actresses, cinematographer, music director and editor led by director Shuchi Lalati. A coming-of-age story which girls/women would like watching and relate to. As I started watching the movie, initially I was put off by the slow pace of the narrative but it soon turned interesting. Preeti Panigrahi plays Mira a senior school girl on the threshold of adolescence who has her hands full balancing issues like a strict helicopter mother, focus on studies, responsibility of school head girl, attraction to a boy student and satisfying her curiosities. It is a learning process for her every step of the way. Preeti has brought out the internal conflict, awkwardness, insecurity and vulnerability of the character very effectively.
Director Shuchi Talati has made a well crafted, simple, sensitive and endearing movie dwelling on a mother-daughter relationship depicting emotional nuances which are truly touching. She has extracted good performances from Preeti Panigrahi ( Mira), Kani Kusruti ( mother Anila) and Kesav Binoy Kiron ( boyfriend Sri). The sequences are framed and photographed artistically and the cinematography is top class. The different aspect ratio has been used effectively.

The movie explores different roles and levels of upholding moral values in a structured and template environment. At first a mother and daughter start out in a flat and rigid silhouette living a life with rules that seperate their lives. But as the lense of the writer and director guides us through different angles of their emotional complexities, those rules and boundaries bring them to their most vulnerable state. And that is the magic of "Girls will be girls". The cast is wonderful and the audience holds their breathe through the unraveling of this seemingly simple story. An absolute must watch.

But to tell that, the film raises your expectations and slaughters them using its own hands. There's a nice group of actors, and a lucky handy teddy bear. But this is nothing new. And children nowadays experience such a phase much earlier in their lives. So while watching it, most of us can get a glimpse of some irrational delusions of the director.
I can understand it's compulsory to speak in English inside the institutions but the film itself here is the institution. Language matters a lot, and that's a reason why it can't reach out to many. Sometimes it feels like Bombay with mountains. Local dialect exist krta hai?
Anyways, makers should talk with students directly, make a nice use of their experiences.
Nice attempt, best wishes.

One of the film's greatest strengths lies in its nuanced portrayal of the mother-daughter relationship. Mira's mother, Anila, a former student of the same school, embodies the complexities of motherhood and the lingering echoes of her own youth. The film delves into the delicate balance between love, control, and the unspoken understanding between generations.
Preeti Panigrahi delivers a stunning performance as Mira, capturing the character's internal conflict and emotional turmoil with remarkable subtlety. Her portrayal is both vulnerable and resilient, making Mira a relatable and empathetic protagonist. Kani Kusruti shines as Anila, bringing depth and nuance to a character grappling with her own past and present.
The film's cinematography is visually stunning, capturing the breathtaking beauty of the Himalayan landscape while also creating a sense of intimacy and claustrophobia within the confines of the boarding school. The score complements the narrative, enhancing the emotional impact of key scenes.
"Girls Will Be Girls" is a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant film that challenges societal norms and celebrates the complexities of female identity. It's a coming-of-age story that resonates with audiences of all ages, offering a poignant exploration of love, desire, and the courage to embrace one's true self.

Coming-of-age films often face the challenge of portraying the teenage perspective authentically while balancing the unfiltered wisdom of older generations. This film walks that tightrope with near-perfection, capturing the complexities of generational divides and emotional truths.
As a love letter to womanhood and its subtle nuances, unfortunately I can only sympatise with its message. But its emotional depth still resonated. Moments of quiet power gave me chills, and I found myself tearing up toward the end-a testament to its maturity and impact.
Unlike most coming-of-age films that lean on soaring scores to heighten emotions, this one finds beauty in silence. The lack of music, coupled with sharp, subtext-rich dialogue, potrayed with long wide static camera shots speaks volumes without saying much at all. Watching it on the big screen was a delight, made even more memorable by meeting the lead actress who is a true force of nature in this.
Highly recommended.

GIRLS WILL BE GIRLS is one of the most believable and tenderest coming-of-age dramas I have ever seen in Indian cinema. The way it sensitively portrays teenage angst, desires, sexuality, emotions etc. Is really delicate and mature.
This film has no mystery, no thrill, no underlying villains with hidden motives, instead it's a slow-paced and methodical drama about life and its various facets. The film primarily revolves around 3 characters, and all of them feel like living breathing humans because of their quirks and flaws, just like people in real life. Everyone desires something here, be it attention, love, sex, good grades, authority, prestige etc. And that's the central theme around which the whole film revolves.
It's a film that tells its story mostly through visuals rather than dialogues. The camerawork is very evocative, since this film states a lot of things through frames alone. I also liked the use of mirrors to frame scenes in the film, and there are plenty of examples that brilliantly portrays characters internal struggle and introspection through them gazing in the mirror. The film is filled with brilliant scenes like Sri trying to hold Mira's pinky finger in an embrace after she gets upset, Anila's poignant expressions after Mira berates her in front of Sri in fits of frustration and jealousy, and the best of all, the scene where Mira breaks in tears in final shot of the film. I am usually tolerant to such things, but this film made me cry on several occasions due to its poignancy and delicacy through which it portrays ordinary situations.
The use of diegetic sound as much as possible in place of musical score also gives this film a very grounded feeling. The acting is very natural. No need to mention how great Kani Kusruti is, but the two newcomers, Preeti Panigrahi and Kesav Binoy Kiron are a real surprise.
In a world where Bollywood is busy replicating Hollywood and South India cinema, this film is a reminder to me that why I fell in love with this Industry in the first place - not because of stars and glamour, but because of the affectionate stories of people it tells, or rather used to tell. This film belongs to a dying breed as everyone is busy in aping the current trend, forgetting the fact that no matter what age, pragmatic human stories will always be relevant.
It's a film that demands patience. And given that, it may reward you with some of the most heartwarming emotions and nostalgic moments you can ever hope for.
Also, it's a request; if possible, please watch it in its original English audio. The Hindi dub is quite good too, but the original one is far superior.

Movie starts off in real setting and try to entice you in proceedings, Movie fall short of expectations because of its uneven screenplay, you keep waiting drama to unfold but it sluggish in a way that u feel boring and uninterested, the premise beginning of the movie show promise in many ways but it give up all as movie progresses , dilema of teen growing up could be explored more in many ways
Plus: actors playing Mira role is brilliant boy sri also excudes gud confidence they both make proceeding interesting
It could be a brilliant but fall way short in many ways direction is good in some scene.

Although I'm not sure I can put this in the category of mainstream Bollywood.
Coming of age is always my piece of cake. Girls Will Be Girls is a prime example to show the scope of liking & disliking in the Indian film industry. And this film is one of the most realistic portrayals of South Asian teenagers & their experience in sexual and relational awakenings from the perspective of a university sophomore like me.
The fundamental relationship between parents & child is what this film exploits to a great extent. The cast has done an excellent job infusing the raw aspects of emotional engagements with their subtle expressions throughout the film.

Felt like just a bad rehash of Nagesh kukunoor's excellent movie Rockford which was 25 years back. Had good team of actors but couldn't make use of them other than dragging it for 2 hours .

It's been ages I have felt this uncomfortable watching a movie, but in an unresistably good way. Mira's face is like water, even the tinest of emotions are eloquently captured creating a ripple effect. If you watch her for long, and that's where Shuchi shines, you will feel you are in the same boat, same skin, losing ground.
The frames, are masterfully captured and the colour palatte makes it even more beautiful, like a melancholic wind, mellow and smooth ,brushing over dry leaves. This movie makes me appreciate women a tad bit more. It shows you how even though one is the perfect prefect, still can be soft and vulnerable below that hard shell . It's a much recommended movie for people who enjoys a mosaic of human emotions and lost time in this age..

Tightly scripted, highly nuanced , superbly crafted, "Girls Will Be Girls " is a gem of a film that stays with you.
Shuchi Talati has meticulously directed each scene so that the underlying theme moves forward in a steady progression to where it is headed.
Preeti Panigrahi comes up with an Oscar performance that merits a concentrated look at each footage. The story requires her to come up with exact expression that conveys what goes on in her mind. And Panigrahi is perfectionist.
Kani Kushruti portrays her role of mother but more as a woman that has something missing.
Can't wait for the Vadodara lady to come up with her next.

My review is nothing like anyone else's. I didn't fully appreciate the brilliance of this until literally, the very, very ending in one conversation at the kitchen table between three people.
Yes, this is a movie about a young girl experiencing her first 'romance' etc, about a mother who over protects and yet seems to be taking over the show in other subtle ways. About a wealthy school where the lucky kids go.
But wait, there's more.
If you've ever been manipulated by a master manipulator, you will see it, and it sits at the end.
Not only does this movie point out the pack male bad behaviour that can occur when males are found out for foulness which they find hilarious, or the type of joke that husbands make which will eventually end their marriage, but it shows how 'girls, who WILL be girls', are open to the myth that males love them easily and always tell the truth; the huge vulnerability and naivete that girls and many women have around the male/female dance of life, and how, as girls do, never see the subtle manipulation that is staring them in the face, often until its too late. Women and men think nothing alike but a manipulative male is one intelligent predator.
