Retitled Bolero for its American release in 1981, Claude Lelouch’s Les Uns et les Autres is a musical multi-family saga spanning five decades. Starring Robert Hossein and Geraldine Chaplin, Lelouch’s screenplay follows the travails and triumphs of four households of different nationalities—it’s their shared love for music that unites the characters and the film.

Actress, director and screenwriter Nicole Garcia is to preside over the Jury for this year’s Caméra d’or award for the best debut film at Cannes.

Garcia, who has presented a total of seven films at Cannes as both actress and director, first came to attention in Bertrand Tavernier’s Let Joy Reign Supreme in 1975 and subsequently worked with directors Henri Verneuil (Body of My Enemy, 1976) and Laurent Heynemann (The Question, 1977).

In 1979, her performance in Philippe de Broca’s Practice Makes Perfect earned her popular acclaim and a César award for best supporting actress. She went on to work with the greats of French cinema including Alain Resnais (My American Uncle, 1980), Bertrand Blier (Stepfather, 1981), Claude Lelouch (Bolero: Dance of Life, 1981), Pierre Schoendoerffer (A Captain’s Honor, 1982), Claude Sautet (Waiter!, 1983) and Claude Miller (Little Lili, 2003).

We stumbled on the film entirely by accident one idle Sunday evening. While scrolling through the movies on Lovefilm Instant, we spotted this anonymous-sounding movie title, and were immediately taken by the following synopsis:

Good things come in small packages (or so my wife assures me), and that can certainly be the case when it comes to films. Part of the genius of short films is that when they’re good they are just as entertaining and rewarding as something twenty times the length, and when they’re bad, well, at least they’re over quickly. In all walks of life there’s a satisfying beauty to brevity, and in filmmaking it’s nearly always the case that less is best – as anyone who has sat through Judd Apatow’s self-indulgent snore-fest Funny People can attest (surely Irritating People would have been a better title?).

But I digress – I’m here to praise, not malign, and so below I’ve compiled a little list of what I consider to be among the five best short films of all time. Of course, like a lot...
