Puzzle Phenomenon
Disney+ has revealed that Korean crime thriller “Nine Puzzles” has become the platform’s most-viewed Korean title globally in 2025, just nine days after its May 21 debut.
The series stars Kim Dami (“Itaewon Class”) as Yoon Ena, a high school student who discovers her murdered uncle’s body alongside a mysterious puzzle piece, only to become the prime suspect. A decade later, now a criminal profiler, she’s pulled into a new series of murders connected by similar puzzle pieces. Son Sukku (“Big Bet”) co-stars as Detective Kim Hansaem, with Kim Sungkyun (“Moving”) and Hyun Bongsik rounding out the cast. The series is directed by Yoon Jongbin (“Narco Saints”) and written by Lee Eunmi (“Tunnel”).
“Nine Puzzles” joins Disney+’s expanding Korean slate alongside “Unmasked” and “Hyper Knife,” with upcoming titles including treasure-hunting series “Low Life” starring Ryu Seungryong and international conspiracy thriller “Tempest” featuring Gang Dongwon and John Cho.

Writer-director Guillermo del Toro and co-writer Kim Morgan will present a never-before-seen extended cut of Nightmare Alley in black -and-white as the closing film at the Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival in Palm Springs, CA, this Sunday, May 11.
“I know Guillermo’s very excited about this,” festival director Alan K. Rode tells Variety. “He and Kim are nice enough to come out and spend some time introducing the film and watching it. I’m honored that he’s coming out to do this, and I’m really looking forward to introducing his black-and-white extended cut from one of our most honored filmmakers. He’s treating it kind of as a premiere, which is very exciting.”

As always, the Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival in Palm Springs — taking place this Thursday through Sunday — will focus on movies from the primary noir era of the ’40s and ’50s, including a handful of films that have not been screened theatrically in several decades. Also as always, the 2025 edition of the desert fest will reserve a spot for a touch of neo-noir, as seen with the inclusion this time of the 1970s crime thriller “The Friends of Eddie Coyle.”
This year, though, the festival will include a truly neo-neo noir. To close out the gathering Sunday night, director Guillermo Del Toro and co-screenwriter Kim Morgan will be coming to Palm Springs with an apparently never-before-seen extended cut of their 2021 film “Nightmare Alley,” presented in black-and-white, a la nearly every one of the 12 vintage films that will be preceding this newbie over the weekend.

Disney+ is continuing its strong push into Korean content with “Nine Puzzles,” a cerebral crime thriller starring Kim Dami (“Itaewon Class”) and Son Sukku (“Big Bet”).
The 11-episode series follows Yoon Ena, a high school student who discovers her uncle’s murdered body next to a single puzzle piece. Initially the prime suspect, Ena reemerges a decade later as a criminal profiler only to find herself entangled in a new series of murders — each victim connected by puzzle pieces similar to the one from her uncle’s crime scene.
The series brings together notable Korean talent beyond its leads, with Kim Sungkyun as Police Captain Yang Jungho and Hyun Bongsik as Junior Detective Choi San. Behind the camera, “Narco Saints” director Yoon Jongbin helms the project from a script by Lee Eunmi.
The first six episodes will drop May 21 on Disney+ internationally, with U.S. viewers accessing the content through Hulu.

Star Warshas at long last provided some context as to when Luke Skywalker's famed training remote from A New Hope was created, doing so in the children's show Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures. Luke was famously seen training with this remote device on board the Millennium Falcon, and it has since reappeared in various places, including The Book of Boba Fett. Now, it's become a part of Young Jedi Adventure, though not without adding some key context to its origin.
In Young Jedi Adventures season 2, episode 12 "Unmasked," Kai Brightstar and his best friend, Prince Cyrus, train with the very same devices during the High Republic era, a few hundred years before A New Hope. During this lightsaber training, these remotes are specified as "new." This is important because, while the training remote has indeed been seen in other High Republic-era properties, this is the first time there's been an...

I think the momentum of Unmasked has taken a dive since the show started. The show began as a symbol of “rebellion.” Not only is the main character, Oh Soryong, an embodiment of this idea, but so are the plots of each case she’s trying to solve. However, 8 episodes in, I feel like it’s getting a little bit old in terms of presentation, and the plot is getting a little bit lost in how hyper the messaging is. Episodes 7 & 8 focus on the stalker story and give us more information on Seongwook’s case. Additionally, we know that Han Do is Dr. Trigger, but does this mean he leaked Soryong’s pictures too? What’s his excuse, and what is he really planning on doing? This is something we’re yet to piece together, but I believe he’s definitely a good guy and is trying to get past his childhood trauma.

There’s a big reveal at the end of episode 6 of The Truth: Unmasked on Disney+, and it’s left me quite shocked. I’ve got to admit episodes 5 and 6 weren’t as engaging as the first 4 episodes, but I hope this doesn’t mean the rest of the show will also follow suit and become more tedious. I definitely think the big reveal at the end of episode 6 makes it more interesting already, but let’s see what the new cases are like. At the end of episode 4, a building collapsed right where Han Do and Soryong were. In Unmasked episode 7 we follow this case closely to find out what went wrong and why the building came crumbling down. We also get some triggering insight into Soryong’s past and learn about why she’s so determined to help people. In episode 8 we get into a case that’s closer to Hong Na-Hee,...

I don’t know what it is with Disney+ and their obsession with the “vigilante” K-dramas that often tend to do really poorly because of how unoriginal they are. Having said that, though, I’m pleasantly surprised by its latest show, Unmasked, which, while still being trope-y and a half-baked comedy for some reason, does stand out for some good reasons. The first two episodes introduce us to a team called “Trigger” at Kns (we all know what that sounds like) Network’s news broadcasting station. The Korean title of the show is Trigger: Unmasked, which is, of course, a perfect title because it tells you exactly what the show is about: a group of crazy people trying to unmask the truth about public injustice. The first two episodes hand us two different cases, but episode 2 leaves us with a cliffhanger, so I’m guessing it’ll be at least one if not two,...

Evan Rachel Wood has used a Channel 4 documentary series to reveal details about her experience of feeling “violated” and “essentially raped” by Marilyn Manson during the shooting of one of his music videos.
Channel 4’s Marilyn Manson: Unmasked ep 1 aired to 350,000 viewers last night and featured claims from both Wood, who has previously accused Manson of abuse, and the response from the singer’s team.
“I felt so fucking violated. But I didn’t call it rape for like many many years,” the Westworld star says in ep 2, which is available on Channel 4’s streaming service, and is produced by Lightbox and sold by Fifth Season.
Wood spoke in depth about her experience working on the 2007 music video for Manson’s hit ‘Heart-Shaped Glasses’.
