Cary Elwes, Christina Hendricks, Mena Massoud to Star in Sam Kadi Political Thriller ‘The American Spring’ (Exclusive)
Image
Cary Elwes (“Saw,” “Mission Impossible”), Christina Hendricks (“Mad Men,” “Good American Family”), and Mena Massoud (“Aladdin”) are set to star in “The American Spring.” Los Angeles-based Syrian director and producer Sam Kadi will direct the political thriller.

Set against a backdrop of deep national division, “The American Spring” follows a Massachusetts governor named Dominic Nelson whose presidential hopes fade amid a polarized primary race.

“Choosing to break from the two-party system, Nelson launches an Independent campaign with an unorthodox campaign manager: Fred Hoffman, who is a controversial political scientist and his childhood friend,” says the provided synopsis. “As their revolutionary platform and unconventional plan to save America ignite fierce debate across the country, a shocking turn of events thrusts Hoffman to the forefront of the campaign, pushing both men into a high-stakes political storm that could either save the nation or tear it apart,” it adds.

“This project is deeply...

15 Actors Who Struggled To Find Roles After Successful Movies
Image
A great role can make a career... if there's a decent follow up. A good actor makes you believe they are the character, but sometimes, if they make you believe too well, it becomes impossible to see them as anyone else -- and that turned out to be the case for many of the actors on this list. A significant chunk of them have even been nominated for and sometimes even won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, only to find that the same energy couldn't be duplicated in other parts less perfectly tailored to their skills. Some struggled because of industrywide racial stereotypes limiting their opportunities, while others may have been limited in range to begin with and were incredibly lucky to find the one part that really worked.

A few of these "one-hit wonders" did not remain so forever and should serve as models of perseverance. Others...

‘Wish You Were Here’ Movie Ending Explained & Full Story: Will Charlotte Be Able To Move On?
Image
Despite acknowledging the mutability of our lives, we plan so much of them beforehand, only to live some of the most cherished, best moments just acting on our instincts. Actor Julia Stiles’ directorial debut, Wish You Were Here, an adaptation of Renee Carlino’s novel of the same name, focuses on some of the fleeting perfect moments of life through the story of star-crossed lovers, Adam and Charlotte. Despite meandering through a route of passion, separation, reconciliation, and heartbreak, which romance movie watchers are way too familiar with at this point—the movie stands strong thanks to the beautiful chemistry between the leads, Isabella Fuhrman and Mena Massoud. Wish You Were Here manages to pull at your heartstrings by presenting a very relatable, aching love story that—perhaps keeping in pace with the times we are living in—moves rapidly, is emotionally turbulent, does away with expectations and burdens, and...

Julia Stiles: Wish You Were Here was the perfect directorial debut
Julia Stiles says 'Wish You Were Here' has become more "meaningful" in the time she has spent developing the film. The 43-year-old star has made her directorial debut on the romantic drama movie and she realised during the process of crafting it that the picture was perfect to make her bow behind the camera. In an interview with Collider, Julia said: "I actually had been looking for a really long time for the right story to tell as a director, and I was sent the book five years ago by an actress who's actually in the movie – she plays the best friend – and I fell in love with it. I guess she heard I was interested in directing, and she was totally right."The book really grabbed me. Actually, in the five years that we've set out to make it, it's only gotten deeper and more meaningful to me and feels more relevant.

Isabelle Fuhrman Talks Julia Stiles’ ‘Wish You Were Here’ Gift and the ‘Orphan 3’ Script: “It’s So Good”
Image
Isabelle Fuhrman and Julia Stiles’ characters may have been at each other’s throats in Orphan: First Kill, but off camera, the two actors developed a bond that’s now resulted in Stiles’ feature directorial debut, Wish You Were Here. Stiles adapted Renée Carlino’s book of the same name during the making of the 2022 Orphan prequel, and in hindsight, Fuhrman can now see the ways in which Stiles was already beginning to envision her as the main character, Charlotte. The romantic drama chronicles the twentysomething woman’s storybook date with Mena Massoud’s Adam, only it ends with him ghosting her for a reason she never could’ve expected.

Fuhrman’s breakout performance at age ten in the cult hit Orphan (2009) made such a striking impression that it’s been difficult for her to shake one of the horror genre’s most indelible villains in Esther. Thus, she is...

Interviews: Julia Stiles and Cast Talk About Her Directorial Debut, Wish You Were Here
Image
Anyone who was around cinema in the early 2000s saw Julia Stiles take the romantic comedy genre by storm. 10 Things I Hate About You and Save The Last Dance were staples of any millenial film collection. She always had a certain something that made her stand out from other leads at the time. So it’s exciting to see her now take the directing route, as she embarks on this new path. A first film is tough, as it can really shape how an audience sees the types of films you’re wanting to make. And while I wasn’t a massive fan of the film (check out my review Here) there’s still plenty of potential for Stiles behind the camera.

I was able to speak with Stiles about her directorial debut, Wish You Were Here, and why she chose to adapt a novel for her first feature.

Here's What the Allegedly Abandoned 'Aladdin' Sequel Would Have Been About
Image
Disney has seen a lot of success from its live-action remakes, with Mufasa: The Lion King currently dominating the global box office as proof of that fact. That movie is a prequel to The Lion King, which grossed over a billion dollars globally. So that begs the question. If a movie grosses that amount, why no sequel? Well, back in 2019, Aladdin brought the cherished 1992 film to life with a colorful live-action rendition directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Will Smith as a not-as-blue Genie alongside Mena Massoud as the titular street rat. But six years later, there has been very little movement on another outing for Aladdin, Jasmine (Naomi Scott), Genie and, of course, Carpet. Why that is can't be answered, but it has been discussed.

'Orphan' and 'Horizon' Star Isabelle Fuhrman Teases Sequels
Image
Julia Stiles' directorial debut Wish You Were Here is now playing in theaters and enlists Isabelle Fuhrman as its female protagonist, a familiar face cinephiles might know best from the pair of Orphan films that have been released thus far. Fuhrman can also be spotted in the small but scene-stealing role of Diamond in Kevin Costner's first Horizon installment last year and will continue to shine in the follow-up. MovieWeb recently caught up with Fuhrman amid the release of her new Stiles-helmed romance film, where the acclaimed actress also took time to preview what's to come in Horizon: Chapter 2.

"There's definitely a lot more of [Diamond] in the second film," Fuhrman told us. "I'm really grateful we got to premiere at Venice, and I think they're just, you know, tacking up the horses and figuring out where they want to lead them. So I'm not involved in that in, like,...

Mena Massoud Shares 'Aladdin' Sequel Story
Image
With the recent release of Mufasa: The Lion King, Disney continues to revisit its beloved animated classics and breathe new life (or something) into the cherished stories, whether it be a sequel, spinoff, or live-action reboot. Back in 2019, Will Smith filled the shoes of fellow Oscar-winner Robin Williams when he took over the coveted Genie role in Aladdin for an acclaimed live-action take on the hit 1992 film, this time directed by Guy Ritchie. Mena Massoud played the beloved eponymous role and is now starring in a new romantic drama film directed by Julia Stiles (10 Things I Hate About You), Wish You Were Here.

MovieWeb recently caught up with Massoud while he was promoting Wish You Were Here, now in theaters, where the dashing actor took time to say he's "100%" down to tackle a live-action sequel to his hit Disney flick. "That was such a fantastic experience," Massoud told us,...

Mena Massoud Reveals He Had a 'Mentality Shift' After Not Getting Auditions Following 'Aladdin' Success
Image
Mena Massoud had a shift in his mentality after starring in the live-action Aladdin adaptation.

The 33-year-old actor previously revealed that he hadn’t gotten any auditions and was still struggling to land any, despite the Disney movie making over a billion dollars.

At a screening of his new movie Wish You Were Here, Mena opened up about the “mentality shift” he went through in the way he looks at things.

“I think it’s a mentality shift more than anything,” he told People. “I think we can get stuck in looking at things in a negative way or a positive way.”

“At that time, I was younger. I filmed Aladdin in 2017, so it’s been almost eight years now,” Mena continued. “And, I think you mature as you go through this industry and you realize like, I mean, look, we’re pretty lucky...

Wish You Were Here Review: Julia Stiles' Romantic Drama Still Tugged At My Heart Even If I Wasn't Dazzled By The Leads' Chemistry
Image
Julia Stiles dips her toes into the directing world with her adaptation of Renee Carlino's Wish You Were Here. The romantic drama, starring The Orphan's Isabelle Fuhrman and the live-action Aladdin's Mena Massoud, follows the path of The Fault in Our Stars and Me Before You. The film centers a woman who falls into a whirlwind romance with a man who is terminally ill. A month shy of Valentine's Day, the film is out in time for those seeking that tearful experience only a romance about a dying person can provide. The subgenre is a hit for a reason.

Stiles opted for this story to be her directorial debut because the novel was emotionally resonant, and on the surface, I can see why. Films grappling with mortality and the unfairness of true love being cut short always grip the heart. Timing and communication are critical to successful relationships...

Wish You Were Here Review: Julia Stiles’ Directorial Debut Doesn’t Quite Land
Image
Plot: A woman searching for a spark finds a whirlwind night of romance with a man only to discover he is terminally ill and commits to helping him spend his last days living life to the fullest.

Review: It’s always exciting when a veteran actor decides to step behind the camera to make a movie. Years of experience in front of the camera often results in a unique view behind it. I’ve always loved Julia Stiles in front of the camera so it’s great to see her make the leap to directing. Based on Renee Carlino’s book of the same name, Wish You Were Here follows Charlotte (Fuhrman) who is meandering through her young adult life. But when she meets Adam (Massoud), her life is flipped upside down in a way that she doesn’t expect, as he reveals he has a terminal illness.

Wish You Were Here Review: A Bittersweet Tale of Love and Loss
Image
Julia Stiles makes her first appearance as director with Wish You Were Here, a romantic drama that balances expected elements with fresh introspection. Based on Renée Carlino’s novel, the film examines love, loss, and self-discovery through Charlotte (Isabelle Fuhrman), a young woman searching for purpose, and Adam (Mena Massoud), an artist facing terminal illness during their brief romance. Stiles brings genuine warmth to the storytelling.

The film’s structure stands out most. The story moves through scattered vignettes, reflecting how love stays in our memory—brief moments of connection, passion, and vulnerability that pass like dreams. By showing events out of sequence, the film draws attention to what might have happened instead of what did, creating deep feelings about time’s temporary nature.

The film speaks to a generation experiencing uncertainty. Charlotte’s search for direction and Adam’s optimism show the worries of millennials in an often confusing world.

‘Wish You Were Here’ Review: Julia Stiles Directs a Surprisingly Subtle Spin on Romantic Weepies
Image
With “Wish You Were Here,” author Renée Carlino provides the blueprint for a romantic drama that could easily be misconstrued as treacly or saccharine. Her novel features a star-crossed love affair, a devastating terminal illness and a young woman caught at a crossroads in her life. Yet instead of fashioning these elements into a mimeographed iteration of “The Fault in Our Stars,” “Dying Young” or pretty much anything from Nicholas Sparks’ oeuvre, director Julia Stiles constructs something fresh. The actor-turned-filmmaker, who co-adapts with Carlino, instills the source material with a clear-eyed sense of emotional authenticity, from its fantastical romanticism to the characters’ delicately-faceted relationship dynamics.

Twentysomething Charlotte (Isabelle Fuhrman) is directionless, waitressing at an unpopular Mexican dive bar with her roommate Helen (Gabby Kono-Abdy). Together the besties are annoyed by the mundanity of their jobs, from fielding ridiculous customer complaints to suffering the indignity of having their service summoned by...

'Wish You Were Here' Review: Bring Tissues to Julia Stiles' Film
Image
No, you won't hear Pink Floyd's iconic rock song of the same name anywhere in Julia Stiles' feature directorial debut, and you won't see Stiles anywhere in Wish You Were Here, either. Stiles made a unique and shining name for herself with that tough-gal demeanor we all adored in throwback hits like 10 Things I Hate About You, but it does feature a talented little ensemble of other stars that mostly carries this new Lionsgate offering — based off Renée Carlino's acclaimed novel — all the way to the tear-jerking finish line.

Sappy tear-jerkers are hardly dead, from We Live in Time and Someone Like You to It Ends with Us and The Idea of You. Continuing that trend (which might as well be sponsored by Kleenex), you might just find yourself ugly-crying by the end of Wish You Were Here, its somber title alone perhaps striking a chord in the...

Why Disney Recast Genie in Aladdin: The Return of Jafar (& Why Robin Williams Returned)
Image
Quick Links Robin Williams Felt Betrayed by the Studios Homer Simpson's Voice Actor was Cast to Replace Williams Williams Was Renowned for Creating a Lot of Material for the Role

Aladdin is part of the classic Disney Renaissance from the '90s. Hopping on a magic carpet ride with the titular character, viewers are able to indulge in a typical tale from the studios at that time. The film started a trend of famous faces delivering the lines of its crafted characters when Robin Williams breathed life into the Genie. It entered a phase of making Disney stories interesting for older audiences as well as children, namely through the likes of Genie; the voices were enough to get children giggling, whilst adults could appreciate the skill and maturity of certain jokes. Its initial positive reception has held up over 30 years later, although it is often perceived as having problematic aspects.

A Twisted Game of Life and Death Unfolds in This Bone-Chilling Horror on Shudder
Image
Christmas hospitality takes on a whole new meaning in The Sacrifice Game — letting guests in on Christmas Eve only for the dinner table to be lined with blood, violence and archaic symbols. Director Jennifer Wexler's feature may seem like a conventional home invasion flick, but a morbidly supernatural twist catches us off-guard, as the two genres meet to create a twisted game of life and death. The horror film flits between genres and narrative beats, keeping us guessing at every corner with the most devilishly clever pirouettes. This is also shaped by the unpredictable characters, with Mena Massoud (Aladdin), Olivia Scott Welch (Fear Street trilogy), Georgia Acken and Madison Baines particularly taking the lead.

Born to an Indian Mother and a British Father, Naomi Scott’s Childhood Was Unique in Its Own Way
Image
Naomi Scott is best known for her work in Aladdin and Charlie’s Angels. She was recently seen in the horror film Smile 2, which has reportedly received positive acclaim from critics and has earned $109 million at the box office. Scott has a long lineup of films, including her debut as a producer in Eternal Return.

Ever since her Aladdin days, Scott’s ethnicity has been under scrutiny. While Disney’s live-action adaptation sought to correct the racial stereotypes propagated by the animated original, Scott’s casting was controversial due to Princess Jasmine being largely believed to be Middle-Eastern or Indian. However, Scott’s ethnicity is actually pretty interesting.

Naomi Scott hails from London and was born on May 6, 1993. According to Empire, the actress’s father Christopher Scott was British with possible Scottish roots while her mother,...

Disney dropped the bombshell back in 2020: Aladdin 2 was officially a go! Fans were ready for another magic carpet ride after the unexpected 2019 smash-hit success of Guy Ritchie’s live-action remake. But, as the year passed, the sequel’s genie seemed to slip back into the lamp. Are there any updates from Disney? Virtually silent. The excitement? Well, it hit a snag — a few times.

Mena Massoud: The Leading Man’s Frustration

Mena Massoud, who dazzled audiences as Aladdin, wasn’t shy about the project’s rollercoaster ride. “They were trying to get it off the ground for a long time,” he confessed post-2023 strike but then came the gut punch. “It’s been six years since we wrapped the project,” Massoud added resignedly. Paul King at an event for Paddington (2014)
Not Even Prince Charming is Safe from Disney’s Live-Action Movie Machine
Paul King at an event for Paddington (2014)
Disney is set to reimagine yet another classic character with a live-action twist, this time bringing Prince Charming into the spotlight. With Paul King, the visionary behind “Paddington” and “Wonka,” in the director’s seat, fans can expect a fresh and whimsical take on one of Disney’s most famous fairy-tale heroes.

Paul King will also be co-writing the script along with Simon Farnaby and Jon Croker, making it a creative collaboration between familiar names. The film aims to reintroduce Prince Charming—typically a supporting figure overshadowed by the princess—to center stage, giving audiences a deeper insight into his story. The details on plot specifics are still largely under wraps, but it’s anticipated that Disney will try to add more complexity and depth to the character’s well-worn archetype.

The decision to cast Paul King suggests Disney wants to lean into a blend of humor, heart, and family-friendly charm.
