Anyone who was around cinema in the early 2000s saw Julia Stiles take the romantic comedy genre by storm. 10 Things I Hate About You and Save The Last Dance were staples of any millenial film collection. She always had a certain something that made her stand out from other leads at the time. So it’s exciting to see her now take the directing route, as she embarks on this new path. A first film is tough, as it can really shape how an audience sees the types of films you’re wanting to make. And while I wasn’t a massive fan of the film (check out my review Here) there’s still plenty of potential for Stiles behind the camera.

I was able to speak with Stiles about her directorial debut, Wish You Were Here, and why she chose to adapt a novel for her first feature.

Wish You Were Here has joined the ranks of popular book-to-screen adaptations and the list of heartbreaking movies. Based on Renee Carlino's novel of the same name, the film follows Charlotte (portrayed by Isabelle Fuhrman) and Adam (played by Mena Massoud) as they meet and form an intense connection. However, their happily ever after is debunked by Charlotte discovering that Adam has been diagnosed with cancer.

Disney has seen a lot of success from its live-action remakes, with Mufasa: The Lion King currently dominating the global box office as proof of that fact. That movie is a prequel to The Lion King, which grossed over a billion dollars globally. So that begs the question. If a movie grosses that amount, why no sequel? Well, back in 2019, Aladdin brought the cherished 1992 film to life with a colorful live-action rendition directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Will Smith as a not-as-blue Genie alongside Mena Massoud as the titular street rat. But six years later, there has been very little movement on another outing for Aladdin, Jasmine (Naomi Scott), Genie and, of course, Carpet. Why that is can't be answered, but it has been discussed.

Ronda Cooper, who had a long career as a Canadian talent agent, including at The Characters Talent Agency for 35 years, has died. She was 77.

Cooper passed away on Jan. 1 in Toronto after a year-long battle with dementia, Characters agency president Jennifer Goldhar Gossack told The Hollywood Reporter.

Born May 1, 1947 in Toronto, Cooper first aspired to become an actress and studied at York University and then at a drama school in London, England. She returned to Toronto in 1979 and found work as a talent agent at the Penny Noble Talent Agency in her hometown and New York City. In 1986, the Characters agency founder Larry Goldhar was looking for a new agent and client and stage and TV actor Jonathan Welsh recommended Cooper.

On ringing her, Goldhar discovered Cooper had just moved back to Toronto from New York City. The two met together over lunch and a week later Cooper joined Characters.

It has been nearly 17 years since Oscar winner Heath Ledger’s death, and now his one-time co-star, Julia Stiles, is remembering the actor. Stiles starred with Ledger in 1999’s classic teen romantic comedy 10 Things I Hate About You. Per People, Stiles, while promoting the film Wish You Were Here on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, touched on working with Ledger on the movie.

“He was such a force,” said Stiles, who co-wrote and makes her directorial debut with Wish You Were Here, which hits theaters Jan. 17. “He walked into a room and just lit it up and had so much energy and passion, and it’s really sad that he’s gone,” Stiles said.

I am starting to question if Lionsgate has an under-the-table deal with Kleenex because, after watching the studio’s Wish You Were Here trailer, I think this movie will make people cry. And not just a little; I’m talking about Niagara Falls, Frankie. Niagara Falls. Wish You Were Here offers an intimate look at Julia Stiles‘s feature directorial debut. In February, the Golden Globe-nominated actress-turned-filmmaker told Deadline she’s “been looking for years for the right story to tell” as a director, and she’s finally found it with an adaptation of Renee Carlino’s best-selling novel of the same name.

Christmas hospitality takes on a whole new meaning in The Sacrifice Game — letting guests in on Christmas Eve only for the dinner table to be lined with blood, violence and archaic symbols. Director Jennifer Wexler's feature may seem like a conventional home invasion flick, but a morbidly supernatural twist catches us off-guard, as the two genres meet to create a twisted game of life and death. The horror film flits between genres and narrative beats, keeping us guessing at every corner with the most devilishly clever pirouettes. In the Grey, the new action thriller from writer-director Guy Ritchie, has been pulled from its original January 17, 2025 release date, Collider reports. The film's distributor, Lionsgate, announced that In the Grey simply isn't yet ready for release. No new release date has been announced as of this time.

The film revolves around two extraction specialists who have to designate a route of escape for a senior female negotiator. It stars Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal, Eiza Gonzlez, Rosamund Pike, and Fisher Stevens. This will mark the third collaboration between Ritchie and Cavill, after The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. It'll also be the third time Ritchie has worked with Gonzlez, who appeared in Ungentlemanly Warfare as well as the 2023 film The Covenant. Finally, it's round two for Ritchie and Gyllenhaal, who previously starred in The Covenant.

A new report from Variety revealed that J.K. Simmons, Mena Massoud, and Trevor Copp will all star in the coming-of-age film Spaceman. Dan Abramovici, best known for his work writing more than 30 episodes of Fairly OddParents: A New Wish and also writing Ben's at Home, which he also starred in, will write and direct Spaceman.
