May 9 Will Be a Sad Day for Resident Evil Fans
Image
Besides video games and live-action movies, the Resident Evil franchise also has its fair share of animated entries. Sadly, the latest of these "anime" movies will soon be voted off the proverbial streaming island.

Released two years ago in Asian theaters, Resident Evil: Death Island is the newest animated CGI movie in the franchise. Currently streaming on Netflix, it's one of multiple entries in the property on the streaming platform. For those who want to catch up on the series' canon, they have less than a month to do so by watching the movie.

Produced by Tms Entertainment, Resident Evil: Death Island was the latest of the CGI Resident Evil "anime" movies. These are treated as being canon with the video games, with Death Island set in 2015 (two years before the events of Resident Evil 7:...

Five Horror Movies Based on Video Games to Stream This Week
Image
With season two of “The Last of Us” now underway and director David F. Sandberg‘s adaptation of Until Dawn arriving in theaters this Friday, horror video game adaptations are having a moment. That doesn’t even touch on the box office juggernaut that is Minecraft, or sequels Mortal Kombat 2 and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 arriving later this year.

It doesn’t appear that the horror video game adaptation trend will slow down any time soon, with Barbarian director Zach Cregger gearing up to take on Resident Evil and André Øvredal (The Last Voyage of the Demeter) attached to direct Bendy and the Ink Machine.

All of this to say that movies based on video games have come a very long way since 1993’s Super Mario Bros., especially in the genre space. This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to horror video game adaptations. Here’s where to stream these five horror movies.

Mikey Madison might star in Resident Evil, plus more updates you missed
Image
Once best known for his comedy as one of the founding members of The Whitest Kids U' Know, Zach Cregger is now an up-and-coming horror director thanks to his hit film Barbarian. Many of us have been eager to see what the filmmaker does next and we'll finally find out later this year with the release of his next movie, Weapons, coming out this August.

Beyond Weapons, the director has also been tapped to helm Sony and Constantin Film's upcoming live-action Resident Evil movie, a film that is said to be more faithful to the games. The most recent rumor is that Academy Award-winning Anora star Mikey Madison might have been offered a leading role, but here are a few other updates you may have missed.

'Resident Evil' Reboot Will Be Based on Original Story, New Report Claims
Image
With almost every live-action Resident Evil adaptation up to this point (save for Johannes Roberts' 2021 film Welcome to Raccoon City), the story of the film or television show has shifted dramatically from that of the game. Mainstays from the video games, such as Chris and Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine, Leon Kennedy, and many others, have, one way or another, fallen to the wayside. Things like the Netflix series or Paul W.S. Anderson's films have taken plenty of creative liberties. Now, a new report on the latest Resident Evil movie in development seems to indicate that this newest iteration will attempt another big creative swing.

The latest story details about the upcoming Resident Evil reboot come from noted scooper Daniel Richtman via his Patreon account. Richtman would describe the movie's plot: "The upcoming Resident Evil film follows a hapless courier tasked with delivering a package to a remote hospital. He...

The Resident Evil film franchise is a series of action-horror movies loosely based on Capcom’s popular survival horror video game series of the same name. The franchise consists of multiple live-action films, an animated film series, and a reboot. The first film in the series came out in 2002, and the latest reboot movie was released in 2021. Mill Jovovich is the face of this franchise and featured in the original film. 2021’s Raccoon City is the only movie not to feature her. But we will rank all the movies in this series at the worldwide box office. Scroll below for the deets.

For the unversed, the action horror film series is based on the Japanese video game franchise by Capcom. It holds the record for the most live-action film adaptations of a video game. It...

Resident Evil: Austin Abrams In Talks To Star In Barbarian Director Zach Cregger's Reboot
Image
Though the previous Resident Evil movies starring Milla Jovovich certainly found an audience, many fans of the long-running survival horror video game series still feel that haven't had a really great adaptation. That could change with Zach Cregger at the helm.

The Barbarian director's next project as part of his current deal with New Line Cinema is Weapons, which recently wrapped production and is set to hit theaters in early 2026. However, THR confirmed that Cregger is indeed set to write and direct a new Resident Evil adaptation for Sony/Constantin late last year, and we now have word on who is set to play the lead.

As first reported by Daniel Richtman, Deadline has confirmed that Wolfs and Euphoria actor Austin Abrams is in talks to star in the movie. No details on the character he'd play were disclosed, but there is speculation that it might be Leon Kennedy.

A new Resident Evil movie is in the works: Here's what we know so far
Image
One of the biggest and most financially successful horror franchises is getting a new movie! Resident Evil will return to the big screen in the near future with Barbarian writer and director Zach Cregger at the helm.

Capcom's popular video game series remains one of the most well-known in the horror genre. Since the late 1990s, the biopunk games have dominated the charts and spanned over a dozen games, novels, comic books, movies, TV shows, and other merchandise. The original live-action film series starring Milla Jovovich ran for seven films, coming to an end in 2017. The last Resident Evil movie to make it to cinemas was the 2021 reboot Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. Netflix then tackled the franchise with its own live-action series that was canceled after just one season.

The Hollywood Reporter exclusively shares that Cregger's take on the post-apocalyptic series has already ignited one of 2025's biggest bidding wars,...

New Resident Evil Movie Officially In The Works From Barbarian Director Zach Cregger
Image
Though the previous Resident Evil movies starring Milla Jovovich certainly found an audience, for many fans of the long-running survival horror video game series, we still haven't had a really great adaptation. That could change with Zach Cregger at the helm.

The Barbarian director's next project as part of his current deal with New Line Cinema is Weapons, which is now in production and is set to hit theaters in early 2026. However, a rumor did the rounds last September that the highly in-demand filmmaker was being courted by Sony Pictures for a new Resident Evil film.

THR has now confirmed that Cregger is indeed set to write and direct a Resident Evil adaptation - but it may not be for Sony!

According to the trade, an intense bidding war is now underway, with "four studios elbowing for the win, among them Warner Bros. and Netflix."

Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez in Resident Evil (2002)
Resident Evil fans have been dealing with no-shows in regards to Resident Evil 9 with the big gaming events this year, despite the plethora of rumours circulating around. The latest crop comes courtesy of Andy at Biohazard Declassified (with JJ from Residence of Evil doing the reporting in the video below), who says that the latest batch of leaks was relayed by a playtester who claims to have played an early build of the game sometime in April and September in Japan.

Obviously, with stuff like this, it pays to keep your grain of salt handy. None of this has been officially confirmed (obviously) by Capcom or anyone on the Resident Evil 9 team. Plus, these rumours do venture into spoiler territory. So, here we go.

According to Andy, Resident Evil 9 will take place 4 years after the main game of Resident Evil Village, and not the Shadows of Rose Dlc. The story...

Some new rumors have surfaced for Resident Evil 9, sharing more information about the upcoming game's protagonists, setting, and story. Resident Evil 9 was officially announced to be in development in July of 2024, but Konami has been quiet about the game since then, offering no new information or release window for the upcoming game. A new leak has surfaced that, if true, may give fans a sneak preview of what's to come.

Series darlings Jill Valentine and Leon S. Kennedy will be returning to the title as dual protagonists in Resident Evil 9, according to RinoTheBouncer on X, who received insider information about the upcoming game. Every Milla Jovovich Resident Evil Movie Now Streaming for Free
Image
The live-action Resident Evil movies were hit-and-miss but still succeeded in building a separate mythology. The series also achieved what other franchises failed to build within the zombie genre.

All of Milla Jovovich's Resident Evil films are now streaming on Pluto TV. For fans who have yet to binge-watch the entire series, Resident Evil and its sequels Apocalypse, Extinction, Afterlife, Retribution, and The Final Chapter have a total runtime of over nine hours (including the end credits). The films are loosely based on the lore of the video games, which leaned heavily on the horror elements of the zombie genre. Die-hard fans of the franchise warmed up to the movies' merits over the years, however; the adaptations featured spot-on depictions of canon characters like Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield, and Albert Wesker. The series also deserves credit for maintaining continuity through its sole protagonist Alice (played by Milla Jovovich).

Barbarian And Weapons Director Zach Cregger Could Be Set To Helm A New Live-Action Resident Evil Movie
Image
Barbarian director Zach Cregger's next project as part of his current deal with New Line Cinema is Weapons, which is now in production and is set to hit theaters in early 2026. However, it seems the highly in-demand filmmaker is also being courted by Sony Pictures.

Industry insider Jeff Sneider recently reported that Cregger was set to helm a Clue reboot for the studio, but later updated his story to say that he had decided to pass on the project and was now in talks to direct a new Resident Evil movie.

The last Resident Evil feature was Johannes Roberts' Welcome to Racoon City starring Kaya Scodelario (Crawl) as Claire Redfield, Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and the Wasp) as Jill Valentine, and Robbie Amell (Upload) as Chris Redfield. It was not well-received by fans or critics.

More recently, a live-action Resident Evil series starring the late Lance Reddick as Albert Wesker was released on Netflix,...

After a successful launch of The Keeper’s Diary: A Biohazard Story, director Andrew Saullo has another treat in store for Resident Evil fans with another cast reunion video. This time, however, he’s upped the ante.

Resident Evil 9 Must Kill The Series Most Important Character

Resident Evil 9 is confirmed to be in development. Rose Winters serving as the lead in the new game will offer a fresh perspective and abilities. If this series staple dies in RE9, it would be a shake-up of the series' lore.

Koshi Nakanishi, director of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, recently confirmed that Resident Evil 9 is in the works at Capcom. Nakanishi confirmed a new installment was in development while promoting a new mobile version of Biohazard. Series devotees are already debating where the story may go after the events of 2021s Resident Evil Village, and it's certainly anyones guess. The Shadows of Rose Dlc focuses on events sixteen years after Village's main story ends. Since the game is almost certain to follow the events of Biohazard and Village, Chris Redfield is sure to play a vital role.

“This was so f**king good”: Milla Jovovich’s Resident Evil Film Franchise Didn’t Get Much Right, But Gamers Agree it Managed 1 Thing in 1:1 Remake
Image
The Resident Evil films, led by Milla Jovovich, often diverged from their video game roots, causing a rift among fans. However, one scene in Resident Evil: Afterlife received unexpected praise for its faithful recreation of a moment from the games.

The scene where Wesker confronts Alice is a near-shot-for-shot remake of a similar confrontation in Resident Evil 5, complete with its iconic choreography and atmosphere. And while fans don’t particularly like the film franchise, this moment was a banger.

While the films received criticism for their deviation from the original game narratives, the introduction of new characters like Alice, portrayed by Milla Jovovich were decisions that were praised.

What’s the saying? Oh yeah… third times the charm and the Resident Evil series is no exception. For our third outing we’re here to explore the aftermath of the apocalypse with Resident Evil: Extinction (watch it Here). This one is pretty divisive with the consensus being some people, like myself, loved this film while others felt this was the beginning of the downward slope of sequels of the franchise. Hear me out as to why I sing its praises. For one, it tells a cohesive story and gives us a side of Alice that we’ve been dying to see. We get more new characters that bring gravitas to the story as well as a fully fleshed out villain and it’s a lot of fun. Plus, its pays homage to The Road Warrior in the best way. So, let’s hit up the Sand Dunes of Vegas,...

Must-See Resident Evil Comparison Shows Just How Far The Series Has Come

Red-Raptor3 showcases the evolution of Resident Evil graphics, highlighting the monumental improvements over the years. The graphical improvements in modern Resident Evil titles have been widely praised, showcasing how far the franchise has come. Capcom's approach of releasing new installments while remaking older games has kept the Resident Evil franchise thriving.

The Resident Evil franchise is one of the most iconic in the entire video game industry and one talented fan wants to remind the community how far the franchise has come since its humble start on the PlayStation One. While many other video game series that began on Sony's first console have been either forgotten or dormant, Capcom's survival horror games have only improved in quality over the years, bar the occasional stumble in the mid-2000s. With modern Resident Evil titles boasting some of the best graphics around, it's easy to forget its roots.

Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) Revisited – Horror Movie Review

As the dawn of the new millennium approached, the world would start to see a trend of films that would become very mainstream. These types of movies are action horror video game adaptations. As stated in our previous video, there have been a number of different ones, but nothing stood out more than Resident Evil. In 2002, we were graced with the first in this series. It may not have been the critic’s favorite, but it did well enough at the box office to spawn a sequel. The name of that sequel is Resident Evil: Apocalypse (watch it Here). With a title that big, you would think the filmmakers went for bigger, better and more destructive…right? For the most part, yes and they even packed in some surprises for fans of the series. So today on Horror Revisited we ask that you suit up and strap in for Alice...

He's been transformed into Albert Wesker, a major villain of the Resident Evil franchise dating back to the original video game. What Would George Romero’s Resident Evil Movie Have Looked Like?
Image
In 1968, George A. Romero created the modern zombie with his film Night of the Living Dead. He followed this up with 1978's Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead in 1985. Romero was also in the director's chair for classic horror films like Martin and Creepshow, but no matter what else he did during his life, it was his zombie creations that he would be most remembered for. Zombies became a popular part of culture over the second half of the 20th century and into the 21st, making the jump from movies to video games. In 1996, Capcom published the PlayStation game Resident Evil, which saw characters Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield as Special Tactics and Rescue Service officers in the fictional Raccoon City, where the T-Virus has been released by the Umbrella Corporation, turning anyone in its way into zombies. The game was terrifying and so successful that it...

Several games are added to the Xbox Game Pass every month, offering gamers a chance to experience their favorite titles by paying just one subscription fee. While the people over at Xbox try and go for a game list that appeals to a wide audience, inevitably they will add a title here and there that doesn’t sit right with fans.

Such is the case with their latest addition to the catalog: the Resident Evil 3 remake. The game is fun and action-packed, but Resident Evil purists and fans of the original felt it left a lot to be desired. Will its presence on Xbox Game Pass go down well? First, let’s understand the criticisms behind the game.

Resident Evil 3: Every Safe Code and Locker Combination
Image
Many safes and lockers can be found in the sprawling areas of Racoon City in Resident Evil 3 (2020), but you can't open them without the right codes or combinations. This remake of Jill Valentine's struggle against Nemesis will have you searching for as many useful items as you can find. These lockers and safes provide useful rewards for your continuing survival-horror adventure.

Similar to the remake of Resident Evil 2, achieving S-Ranks in Resident Evil 3 is easier when you have more items at your disposal. More ammunition, healing items, or new weapons are incredibly hard to come by, especially on harder difficulties. The codes or combinations of lockers and safes give you vital tools that could mean the difference between life and death.

Looks Like Xbox Game Pass Is About To Get Even Better This Month
Image
Xbox Game Pass subscribers will have the opportunity to play a beloved remake title at no additional cost. The addition of this game adds value to the subscription service, especially since its prequel was added in January. Subscribers can experience the narrative connection between the two games with a single Xbox Game Pass subscription.

The subscription service Xbox Game Pass is expected to get a whole lot better in February with the arrival of a new and highly popular game. Every month, new titles are added to the service’s catalog, allowing members to download and play hundreds of games at no additional cost. While day-one releases on Xbox Game Pass tend to occupy the spotlight, there are a few older games that are added and offer a chance for players to try them out for the first time or, for those who have already played, revisit that world.

The Correct Order To Watch The Resident Evil Movies
Image
This post contains spoilers for the "Resident Evil" film franchise.

Umbrella Corporation. The name will forever be associated with unsavory, downright evil acts within the "Resident Evil" universe, catalyzing the events that define the franchise. Although Capcom's "Resident Evil" games have their own set of canonical events concerning Umbrella Corp., the film adaptations that branched into their own universe also paint this multinational conglomerate in a rather infamous light. In every iteration, Umbrella is never up to any good: be it the manufacture and mass production of biological weaponry, or ushering a new race of virus-enhance monstrosities. At the end of the day, the "Resident Evil" films also fit the survival-horror mold, with a woman named Alice (Milla Jovovich) at the center of the horrors crafted by none other than Umbrella.

With six frenetic, action-packed entries and a promising franchise reboot in its arsenal, the "Resident Evil" film franchise...

Resident Evil's Best Entry Changed is Still Changing Video Game Movies
Image
The first Resident Evil movie performed well at the box office despite receiving mixed reviews, becoming one of the first successful video game adaptations. Resident Evil's blending of genres opened the door for adaptations of video game franchises within other genres. The Resident Evil films provide insights into what does and does not work when it comes to adaptations.

When the first movie adaptation of Capcom's Resident Evil video game hit the screen in 2002, it received mixed reviews from audiences who had never played the games, drawn to its large-scale, female-led action horror, and fans of the games who were dissatisfied with the significant deviations from the established narrative, characters, and setting. To this day, the Resident Evil film series remains one of the highest-grossing horror movie franchises. While these films were not faithful adaptations of the game universe, they set a precedent for future video game adaptations.

Before the release of the 2002 film,...

‘Resident Evil’ Fan Film ‘The Keeper’s Diary: A Biohazard Story’ Drops Teaser During the Horror Game Awards [Watch]
Andrew Saullo
Two months after wrapping production, director Andrew Saullo has unleashed the teaser trailer for his upcoming Resident Evil fan film, The Keeper’s Diary: A Biohazard Story. Debuting during The Horror Game Awards 2023, the 15-second clip is a short but very sweet one, teasing the eventual release of the full trailer coming “soon”, exclusively on the Residence of Evil YouTube Channel.

The slick teaser for The Keeper’s Diary provides some rapid-fire cuts of Jill Valentine (played by Gracie Madsen), Charlie Kraslavsky as the ill-fated Umbrella researcher responsible for the Arklay Laboratory’s animals (aka “The Keeper”), “Steve from Research” (played by Frank Scalabrino), and of course, a typewriter.

Inspired by the original Resident Evil and its 2002 remake, The Keeper’s Diary: A Biohazard Story is an adaptation of the diary entry of the same name found in the Spencer Mansion. It summarizes a researcher succumbing to a viral outbreak in an underground research facility.

10 Things Resident Evil Fans Will Love In The Death Island Movie
Image
Warning: Major spoilers for Resident Evil: Death Island below!

Resident Evil: Death Island brings together the franchise's biggest game characters for an action-packed team-up fans have long dreamed of. The film pays tribute to the franchise's past by featuring Raccoon City and giving Rebecca Chambers a more active role. Death Island wraps up loose ends from previous installment Vendetta and includes some actual horror elements, adding tension to the predominantly action-focused animated Resident Evil movies.

Resident Evil: Death Island is something of a love letter to the franchise and one that fans will have a great time with. The first entry in the video game franchise was hugely inspired by zombie movies, so it felt only natural Resident Evil would be a good fit for the big screen. That said, the Milla Jovovich-fronted films placed far more of an emphasis on outlandish action and sci-fi twists than horror and...

When Resident Evil: Death Island Takes Place In The Franchise Timeline
Image
Resident Evil: Death Island takes place in the larger Resident Evil franchise timeline, coming after the events of previous installments such as Resident Evil: Vendetta and Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness. The film opens with a flashback to the infamous Raccoon City incident in 1998, setting the stage for the rest of the story, which primarily unfolds in 2015 — 17 years after the first viral outbreak. Death Island features key characters like Leon S. Kennedy, Claire Redfield, Chris Redfield, and Jill Valentine, further placing it within the franchise's timeline and connecting it to previous games and films.

Set in the same universe as Capcom's enduring horror video games, Resident Evil: Death Island has viewers wondering when it takes place in the larger Resident Evil franchise timeline. The fifth installment in the animated Resident Evil series, Death Island was released in the wake of Resident Evil: Vendetta and Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness. Packed with lore,...

Resident Evil Movies Ranked from Worst to the First One
Image
This article contains spoilers

It may seem hard to believe, but at one stage Resident Evil was not only the highest-grossing film series based on a video game, but also the highest-grossing horror film series period. Consisting of six movies and a reboot, the Resident Evil movies just kept making money even while they were being bashed by critics. Most of those critics arguably had valid points, but the arrival of a new Resident Evil movie simply became oddly comforting somewhere along the way.

Thanks to the creative voices of Event Horizon director Paul W.S. Anderson and his Fifth Element actress wife Milla Jovovich, six of the seven Resident Evil movies feature the character of Alice (Jovovich firing on all cylinders), a former security specialist and covert operative who initially has amnesia but eventually remembers she’s out to take down the insidious Umbrella Corporation, a global company responsible for Earth’s weirdest zombie apocalypse.

What It's Like to Perform Asl Alongside Taylor Swift During the Eras Tour

You might Jillian Deaton from TikTok, where she recently went viral for her performance interpreting American Sign Language during Taylor Swift's Eras Tour. Originally from Mesa, Az, the 30-year-old is now based in New York City. She's been interpreting Asl professionally since 2014, and got her interpreting education at Phoenix College in Phoenix, Az. ‘Resident Evil: Death Island’ Review – An All-Star and Affecting Entry in the Animated Franchise
Image
Resident Evil is a video-game franchise with no foreseeable end in sight. And as Capcom’s zombie shooter approaches the big 3-0, it unleashes another entry in the often overlooked animated series of films. Taking place between games 6 and 7, and following 2017’s Vendetta, the story of Resident Evil: Death Island is subject to the same formula as its predecessors. A big threat brews somewhere, and the characters rush in to stop it. However, the new animated film does manage to set itself apart by featuring an all-star cast and complementing the over-the-top action sequences with organic emotional moments.

While the previous animated films — Degeneration, Damnation, and Vendetta — tend to star only a few major characters from the game franchise, Death Island includes four heavy-hitters. Leon S. Kennedy, Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield, and Claire Redfield are all active during this mission.

7 New Horror Movies Releasing This Week Including A24’s Acclaimed ‘Talk to Me’
Image
It’s the final week of July and two more new horror movies are headed onto the big screen this weekend. They’ll have to compete with the #Barbenheimer phenomenon, but both new horror releases look to bring very different counter programming to the box office. One is the next rated “R” fright fest from A24, while the other is a horror-comedy built for families.

Here’s all the new horror releasing July 25– July 30, 2023!

For daily reminders about new horror releases, be sure to follow @HorrorCalendar.

First up, a tragedy leads two dysfunctional families to intertwine in disturbing ways in Screambox Exclusive Repulse, now streaming on the Bloody Disgusting-powered platform.

The bleak, brutal Czech film harkens back to boundary-pushing horror like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Hills Have Eyes.

In the film, Kateřina and Robert raise their young daughter in a luxurious modern villa, but their family life can hardly be called harmonious.

‘Resident Evil: Dead Island’ Ending, Explained: Did Leon & Co. Manage To Stop The Biodrones?
Image
As the highest-grossing and most popular horror franchise across all forms of media, Resident Evil manages to stay in business around the year, bringing out animated projects, live-action series, or game announcements, never letting fans starve for brand-new grotesque content. Through two and a half decades, the franchise has revolutionized the zombie-horror genre to the point where the name itself has become synonymous with the concept. The recently released Resident Evil: Dead Island is the fifth entry to the CG animated Resident Evil movie universe, which also acts as filler content for the main game series, and for the first time, we get to see all the mainstay characters banding together to take down another T-virus-induced global catastrophe.

By now, the lore of Resident Evil has established a pretty straightforward narrative structure with all its tropes and distinctive characteristics. Edward Ashford, Oswell Spencer, and James Marcus founded the pharmaceutical company...

Resident Evil: Death Island explores the ongoing trauma faced by these characters, particularly Jill, who is coping with the aftermath of mind control and survivor's guilt.
