With season two of “The Last of Us” now underway and director David F. Sandberg‘s adaptation of Until Dawn arriving in theaters this Friday, horror video game adaptations are having a moment. That doesn’t even touch on the box office juggernaut that is Minecraft, or sequels Mortal Kombat 2 and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 arriving later this year.

It doesn’t appear that the horror video game adaptation trend will slow down any time soon, with Barbarian director Zach Cregger gearing up to take on Resident Evil and André Øvredal (The Last Voyage of the Demeter) attached to direct Bendy and the Ink Machine.

All of this to say that movies based on video games have come a very long way since 1993’s Super Mario Bros., especially in the genre space. This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to horror video game adaptations. Here’s where to stream these five horror movies.

Earlier this year, the previous two games in the beloved franchise were brought to the platform, and now the third title will follow suit, bringing the 1999 classic to a wider audience on PC with quality-of-life improvements.

When the first movie adaptation of Capcom's Resident Evil video game hit the screen in 2002, it received mixed reviews from audiences who had never played the games, drawn to its large-scale, female-led action horror, and fans of the games who were dissatisfied with the significant deviations from the established narrative, characters, and setting. Two months after wrapping production, director Andrew Saullo has unleashed the teaser trailer for his upcoming Resident Evil fan film, The Keeper’s Diary: A Biohazard Story. Debuting during The Horror Game Awards 2023, the 15-second clip is a short but very sweet one, teasing the eventual release of the full trailer coming “soon”, exclusively on the Residence of Evil YouTube Channel.

The slick teaser for The Keeper’s Diary provides some rapid-fire cuts of Jill Valentine (played by Gracie Madsen), Charlie Kraslavsky as the ill-fated Umbrella researcher responsible for the Arklay Laboratory’s animals (aka “The Keeper”), “Steve from Research” (played by Frank Scalabrino), and of course, a typewriter.

Inspired by the original Resident Evil and its 2002 remake, The Keeper’s Diary: A Biohazard Story is an adaptation of the diary entry of the same name found in the Spencer Mansion. It summarizes a researcher succumbing to a viral outbreak in an underground research facility.

It may seem hard to believe, but at one stage Resident Evil was not only the highest-grossing film series based on a video game, but also the highest-grossing horror film series period. Consisting of six movies and a reboot, the Resident Evil movies just kept making money even while they were being bashed by critics. Most of those critics arguably had valid points, but the arrival of a new Resident Evil movie simply became oddly comforting somewhere along the way.

Thanks to the creative voices of Event Horizon director Paul W.S. Anderson and his Fifth Element actress wife Milla Jovovich, six of the seven Resident Evil movies feature the character of Alice (Jovovich firing on all cylinders), a former security specialist and covert operative who initially has amnesia but eventually remembers she’s out to take down the insidious Umbrella Corporation, a global company responsible for Earth’s weirdest zombie apocalypse.

The Keeper's Diary: A Biohazard Story, a fan film about the most well-known document that can be found in the Resident Evil series, is now fully funded.

On X, the official account for the fan film posted an announcement that the project is officially fully funded after a successful Indiegogo campaign. The post touts the accomplishment as the largest community funded project in recent history. Better yet is that the film raised more than that was expected, ultimately garnering $55,277 to use for the budget. That's 38% above the $40,000 goal.

The latest entry in the animated franchise, Resident Evil: Death Island comes two years after the last entry, Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, and is set in 2015, just after the events of Resident Evil: Vendetta but before Resident Evil 7. Got that?

Somewhere in San Fransisco Dso Agent Leon S. Kennedy is trying to recover kidnapped scientist Dr. Antonio Taylor (Frank Todaro) when a mysterious woman appears and, after a high-speed chase, causes him to crash. Claire Redfield is also in town, trying to find out what kind of creature can use Orcas as a food source. And whether or not the creature is a bioweapon.

Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield and Rebecca Chambers are also looking for answers.

Resident Evil is a video-game franchise with no foreseeable end in sight. And as Capcom’s zombie shooter approaches the big 3-0, it unleashes another entry in the often overlooked animated series of films. Taking place between games 6 and 7, and following 2017’s Vendetta, the story of Resident Evil: Death Island is subject to the same formula as its predecessors. A big threat brews somewhere, and the characters rush in to stop it. However, the new animated film does manage to set itself apart by featuring an all-star cast and complementing the over-the-top action sequences with organic emotional moments.

While the previous animated films — Degeneration, Damnation, and Vendetta — tend to star only a few major characters from the game franchise, Death Island includes four heavy-hitters. Leon S. Kennedy, Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield, and Claire Redfield are all active during this mission.

The legendary creator of Cowboy Bebop, Shinichirō Watanabe, teams up with John Wick director for a new anime series.

A report from Deadline revealed that Watanabe is working with Adult Swim and Studio Mappa to produce an anime project titled Lazarus. It is described as a sci-fi action thriller set in the near future and will be the first series written/directed by the creator since 2019's Carole & Tuesday. Watanabe described the upcoming project as "a culmination of my career so far." He also added that he hoped fans would enjoy it and teased that they would get a first look at Adult Swim Festival on July 22, 2023.
