Sammy Hagar Brings Out Kesha, Resurrects Van Halen Classics at Vegas Residency Kickoff
Image
Sammy Hagar’s The Best of All Worlds Las Vegas residency kicked off Wednesday night at the Park MGM. The Red Rocker and his band, which includes guitarist Joe Satriani, bassist Michael Anthony, drummer Kenny Aronoff, and keyboardist Rai Thistlethwayte, stuck largely to the setlist they brought around to North American amphitheaters last summer, with some very notable surprises.

The first one took place at the top of the show, when they opened with “Encore, Thank You, Goodnight,” the brand-new song that Hagar claimed he wrote with Eddie Van Halen in a dream.

Sammy Hagar: Alex Van Halen Is “Angry” Because “I’m Out Doing It” and “He Can’t”
Image
Sammy Hagar and Alex Van Halen haven’t been on speaking terms in 21 years, and the Red Rocker has a couple theories as to why the drummer is upset with him, with one being jealousy.

Hagar recently released the new single “Encore, Thank You, Goodnight,” inspired by a dream he had about Eddie Van Halen. The singer and his all-star backing band of Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani, and Kenny Aronoff are set to kick off their “Best of All Worlds” Las Vegas residency on Wednesday night (April 30th) at Dolby Live at Park MGM (pick up tickets here).

Back in 2022, Hagar revealed that he’d been completely cut off by his onetime Van Halen bandmate, saying, “Alex has got a stick up his ass about something with me still.”

Alex then completely ignored the Van Hagar years of Van Halen in his 2024 memoir, Brothers, with...

Sammy Hagar to Alex Van Halen: ‘Just Leave Me Alone. I’ll Leave You Alone’
Image
Late last week, Sammy Hagar shared his new song “Encore, Thank You, Goodnight,” which he claims he wrote in a dream with Eddie Van Halen. “This was 100 percent a communication from the beyond,” Hagar told Rolling Stone. “There is no question about it. I dream about Eddie all the time, quite honestly.”

We dove deep into the creation of “Encore, Thank You, Goodnight” in an article a few days back, but Hagar is truly one of the most entertaining interviews in rock, rivaled perhaps only by Noel Gallagher. He wasn...

Sammy Hagar has released a new single titled “Encore, Thank You, Goodnight.” that he says was inspired by a dream he had about his late Van Halen bandmate Eddie Van Halen.

The track features Hagar’s all-star band of Joe Satriani on guitar, Michael Anthony on bass, and Kenny Aronoff on drums. The Red Rocker goes so far as to say that Eddie Van Halen presented him the song in the dream.

“This song is my final bow to that part of my life,” stated Hagar. “It’s not meant to be anything more than a thank-you — with love, with respect, and with one hell of a guitar solo.”

He added, “Joe was the perfect partner to help me shape the sound — he brought in that big, emotional, guitar-driven energy that feels like Eddie’s spirit but is entirely of Joe’s creation. With Michael...

Hear the Song that Sammy Hagar Wrote With Eddie Van Halen in a Dream
Image
About a year after Eddie Van Halen died in 2020, Sammy Hagar had a dream that they were sharing a chill moment together. “He had a guitar around his neck and we were having a love fest since we hadn’t seen each other in a long time,” Hagar tells Rolling Stone. “And he just started playing this riff, and I started singing.”

It took several years, but Hagar ultimately finished the song, which he wound up calling “Encore, Thank You, Goodnight,” with help from guitarist Joe Satriani, Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony,...

Sammy Hagar Says He Doesn’t Want to Tour Anymore
Image
Sammy Hagar is set to kick off a Las Vegas residency in April, and going forward residencies and one-off shows might be the only way to see the Red Rocker.

In a new interview, the 77-year-old Hagar revealed that he doesn’t want to tour anymore, and has even told his manager to not book any extended outings. However, it appears Hagar would do more residencies if he enjoys playing in Vegas.

“I don’t think I want to go on tour anymore,” he told the Miami Herald. “I hate to say that, because I don’t want to piss my fans off. I’ll go out and do a one-off show and do things like that, but the residency is going to give me a good extension of my career. That’s what I’m hoping for.”

He added, “I keep telling my manager,...

Joe Satriani: Kurt Cobain “Was a Great Guitar Player”
Image
Joe Satriani is known for his virtuoso skills on guitar, so any praise he heaps on another guitarist is worth its weight in gold. In a recent interview, Satriani commended Kurt Cobain, calling the late Nirvana frontman a “great guitar player.”

“I was very happy with those Nirvana records,” Satriani told Classic Rock. “He was a great guitar player. You go back and look at Nirvana clips, and you realize this guy is playing everything he’s supposed to play. He’s not looking at what he’s playing, so obviously he really knows the instrument.”

He added, “And he’s playing with one of the greatest drummers of all time [Dave Grohl], so that wouldn’t have worked if he was not a good guitarist.”

Billy Joel spent New Year’s Eve in front of a capacity crowd at Ubs Arena in Elmont, New York, where he played an extended set that mixed big hits with lesser-known tunes from his catalog. Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening was the opening act, and Bonham himself came out halfway through Joel’s set to lead his band through “Whole Lotta Love.”

Joe Satriani and Steve Vai Form New Band, Announce 2025 Tour Dates
Image
Joe Satriani and Steve Vai have formed a new band together, the SatchVai Band, and announced a run of UK/European tour dates.

The formation of the band follows the duo’s excellent 2024 single, “The Sea of Emotion, Pt. 1.” While the guitarists are longtime friends and have shared the stage many times as pillars of the G3 shred-guitar tours, the song marked their first time collaborating on a studio track.

At the time of the song’s release, Satriani and Vai were on a co-headlining tour. Things must have went smoothly all round, as the two virtuosos decided to join forces for good and make “SatchVai” a full-on band.

“The Satchvai Band Tour is happening!” enthused Satriani [via a press release]. “I’m so looking forward to sharing the stage with Steve again. Every time we play together, it takes me back to when we were teenagers, eating and breathing music every second of the day,...

Jason Bonham Opens Up on Being “Let Go” from Sammy Hagar’s Band: “I Was a Little Shocked”
Image
Jason Bonham has opened up about his ouster from Sammy Hagar‘s “Best of All Worlds” band in a new interview.

As previously reported, Bonham was recently permanently replaced in Hagar’s live band by Kenny Aronoff. The lineup change came after Aronoff filled in for Bonham on the last four dates of Hagar’s summer tour, when the son of late Led Zeppelin legend John Bonham had to drop off to be with his ailing mother.

Bonham initially broke the news of his permanent replacement to fans on social media who had inquired whether he would be rejoining Hagar for future dates. Now the drummer has shared more details about the split — which came as a surprise to Bonham, who had toured and recorded three studio albums with the Red Rocker since 2015.

“Sammy rang me awhile ago,” Bonham told Ultimate Classic Rock. “He was asking about my mom,...

$1 Million Worth of Guy Fieri and Sammy Hagar’s Tequila Hijacked in Double Heist
Image
Guy Fieri and Sammy Hagar’s joint tequila business suffered a huge setback after two trucks carrying about $1 million worth of their Santo Tequila were hijacked in a double heist in Texas during the weekend of November 9th.

According to a representative of Hagar, via Fox News, the trucks were hijacked over the weekend in Laredo, just after crossing the border into the United States. A total of 4,040 cases of tequila, including Santo blanco, reposado, and a special extra añejo — which took 39 months to make — were stolen.

Jason Bonham: Sammy Hagar “Has Decided to Carry On” with Kenny Aronoff as His Drummer
Image
This past summer, Sammy Hagar featured an all-star backing band of Joe Satriani (guitar), Michael Anthony (bass), and Jason Bonham (drums) as part of his “Best of All Worlds” tour focusing heavily on Van Halen material. Now, the Red Rocker is moving on without Bonham, replacing him with another renowned drummer, Kenny Aronoff.

Aronoff actually filled in for Bonham on the last four dates of the tour, when the son of late Led Zeppelin legend John Bonham had to drop off the outing to be with his ailing mother. According to Jason, the switch has become permanent.

Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, and Steve Vai Announce G3 Reunion Live Album, Unveil Cover of Cream’s “Crossroads”: Stream
Image
Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, and Steve Vai have announced the G3 Reunion Live album, arriving January 31st. The virtuoso guitarists’ extended jam on Cream‘s “Crossroads” can be streamed now.

The live album was captured during the trio’s performance at the The Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles earlier this year as part of the 2024 G3 reunion tour.

Arriving on 4-lp and 2-cd, the live album recreates the actual format of the G3 concerts: each guitarist performing a distinct set before the three virtuosos take the stage together for an all-out jam session.

The first LP features a full set from Vai; the second LP belongs to Eric Johnson; the third LP is Satriani; and the fourth LP (on splatter vinyl) houses the jam session — a medley of “Crossroads,” Jimi Hendrix’s “Spanish Castle Magic,” and a closing rendition of Steppenwolf’s “Born to Be Wild.”

Alex Van Halen Says Van Halen “Not the Same” After David Lee Roth Left: “Magic Was in the First Years”
Image
As Alex Van Halen continues to promote his upcoming memoir, Brothers, the drummer’s apparent disdain for Sammy Hagar becomes more and more evident. In a new interview with Billboard, Alex suggests that Van Halen lost their “magic” after David Lee Roth left the band in 1985.

In a previous interview with Rolling Stone, Alex blamed Diamond Dave’s apparent refusal to pay tribute to Eddie Van Halen for putting the kibosh on a planned reunion tour honoring the late guitarist. That said, he holds the band’s initial years with Dlr in the highest regard.

“What happened after Dave left is not the same band,” Van Halen told Billboard. “I’m not saying it was better or worse or any of that. The fact is Ed and I did our best work whenever we played.”

He continued, “We always gave it our best shot. But the magic was in the first years,...

Alex Van Halen: David Lee Roth Didn’t Want to Pay Tribute to Eddie Van Halen on Nixed Tour
Image
Alex Van Halen has given his first public interview since the death of his brother Eddie Van Halen, and the drummer revealed some shocking revelations regarding a proposed Van Halen reunion tour that never came to fruition.

Alex spoke to Rolling Stone ahead of the release of his memoir Brothers on October 22nd, opening up about myriad topics, including the nixed reunion tour and the bizarre reason why the plans came to a halt.

Rumors of the tour that had circulated since Eddie’s passing were largely true. According to the Rolling Stone article, Roth and Alex had even begun rehearsing for the tour with members of Dlr’s solo band, with plans to fill out the lineup with former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony and Joe Satriani on lead guitar, in Eddie’s place.

At the time of these rehearsals, Alex had already begun feeling numbness in his feet,...

Sammy Hagar Praises Steven Tyler for Retiring: “Other Motherf**kers Should Have Did [That] a Long Time Ago”
Image
Sammy Hagar took time out of his concert on Friday night (August 2nd) to honor Aerosmith, who had just announced their retirement from touring only hours earlier. The Red Rocker praised singer Steven Tyler for knowing when to call it a day, while also declaring that “a lot of other motherf**kers should have did a long time ago,” perhaps a not-so-subtle dig at longtime nemesis David Lee Roth.

As reported, Aerosmith abruptly retired from touring on Friday, citing Tyler’s vocal injury. The band had hoped to embark on their farewell tour this September after postponing it last year, but determined “that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible.”

Serj Tankian and Film Composer Bear McCreary Team Up on Explosive New Song “Incinerator”: Stream
Image
Film and television composer Bear McCreary has unleashed “Incinerator” as the latest single from his recently announced album The Singularity, arriving May 10th. The song features Serj Tankian on vocals, and has a sonic vibe that would fit comfortably in System of a Down’s catalog.

“When I got the music, when I got this song specifically, I was blown away,” stated Tankian. “It’s explosive.”

The song is explosive, indeed, starting out with a blistering guitar riff before Tankian’s soaring trademark vocals take the spotlight. About two minutes into the track, Tankian shifts into a chaotic rapid delivery reminiscent of Soad’s “Chop Suey!”

The tune serves as the album’s leadoff track, with McCreary remarking, “Once I heard Serj’s searing vocals, I knew immediately that ‘Incinerator’ would be the first song on the album, acting like a warning that a massive, aggressive, and emotional journey lay ahead.

Mark Knopfler has teamed up with a host of fellow guitar legends to record a version of his song “Going Home (Theme from Local Hero)” to raise funds for Teenage Cancer Trust and Teen Cancer America.

The Dire Straits frontman tapped Eric Clapton, Slash (Guns N’ Roses), David Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Brian May (Queen), Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), Pete Townshend (The Who), Alex Lifeson (Rush), Bruce Springsteen, Ronnie Wood (The Rolling Stones), Joan Jett, and many more, forming what he has dubbed “Mark Knopfler’s Guitar Heroes.” Notably, the star-studded version opens with the final recorded guitar track by the late Jeff Beck.

Knopfler’s longtime collaborator Guy Fletcher handled the production of the track, which might be the greatest assemblage of guitar talent to co-exist on a single song. The Sgt. Pepper‘s-style artwork was created by Sir Peter Blake.

The full song can be heard below now, featuring...

Wolfgang Van Halen Reacts to David Lee Roth’s “This F**kin’ Kid” Rant
Image
Wolfgang Van Halen has reacted to a recent rant in which he was verbally assaulted by David Lee Roth for incidents that allegedly occurred when they were both in Van Halen.

Back in January, Diamond Dave posted a video to his YouTube channel that essentially served as a long voice-over monologue insulting Wolfgang. The clip started with Roth suggesting that the late Eddie Van Halen’s son benefitted from nepotism, and then went on to accuse the young musician of trying to throw Roth’s guests out of Van Halen shows. Throughout the entire rant, Roth continuously referred to Wolfgang as “this fuckin’ kid.”

In a new interview with the radio show The Morning X With Barnes & Leslie (as transcribed by Blabbermouth), Wolfgang was asked why he thinks Roth would spew such “vile” venom toward him. He responded, “I guess I’m honored he even thinks about me as much as he seems to.

David Lee Roth: “Sammy Hagar Was Abducted by Aliens and He Was Sex Probed”
Image
The long-running feud between Van Halen frontmen continues on with David Lee Roth now declaring that “Sammy Hagar was abducted by aliens and he was sex probed.”

Diamond Dave delivered the verbal assault on the Red Rocker in a new video dubbed “The Ballad of Popsicle Sam,” in which we hear Dlr’s voice over a 25-minute slideshow of new black & white photos of himself.

To backtrack, Hagar claimed in 2011 that he was once abducted by aliens, telling MTV at the time, “Aliens were plugged into me. It was a download situation. This was long before computers or any kind of wireless. There weren’t even wireless telephones. Looking back now, it was like, ‘Fuck, they downloaded something into me!’ Or they uploaded something from my brain, like an experiment. ‘See what this guy knows.’”

Now, 13 years later, Dlr is poking fun at Hagar’s claims, perhaps upset at some...

Standing in the basement of the Harrah’s Cherokee Center in downtown Asheville, North Carolina, Billy F. Gibbons is recalling the moment he received his first guitar. He was only 13.

“It was Christmas Day,” the 73-year-old Zz Top frontman tells Rolling Stone. “[All these years later], there’s so many different ways to remain creative and the expressiveness seems to remain as a challenge — it’s exciting.”

Gibbons was part of the guitar summit (including a number of players on Rolling Stone‘s list of the 250 Greatest Guitarists of All Time) that erupted onstage...

David Lee Roth Unveils Newly Recorded Version of Van Halen’s “Jump”: Stream
Image
David Lee Roth has shared a newly recorded version of Van Halen’s monster hit “Jump.” The singer laid down the track during a 2022 session that has also yielded new renditions of other Van Halen classics.

The recording took place on May 3rd, 2022, at the Henson Recording Studio in Hollywood, California. The track features Al Estrada (guitar), Ryan Wheeler (bass), and Francis Valentino (drums).

Previous songs that have come out of that session include “Unchained,” “Everybody Wants Some!!,” “You Really Got Me,” “Dance the Night Away,” “Panama,” and “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love.”

It’s unclear why Diamond Dave chose to record new versions of these Van Halen classics. Perhaps he set out to prove that his voice was still in good shape, after receiving criticism about his live performances in recent years.

Earlier this year, fellow former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar declared, “[Roth] doesn’t care about singing.

David Lee Roth Responds to Sammy Hagar’s Tour Invite: “Let’s Do This”
Image
When it comes to the relationship between David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar, the usual question is “Why can’t this be love?” However, it looks like there may be a truce among the long-feuding Van Halen frontmen, as Diamond Dave has seemingly accepted the Red Rocker’s invite to join him onstage.

Hagar recently announced the 2024 “Best of All Worlds Tour” (tickets available here), featuring an all-star backing band of Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani, and Jason Bonham. The summer outing will see Hagar and company focusing largely on Van Halen material.

Following the tour announcement, Hagar told Howard Stern, “We’re gonna invite every musician in every town. … Other guitar players, we’ll get them involved; other singers, get ’em involved. If Alex Van Halen wants to jump out — if David Lee Roth wants to come out and join us, come on motherf**ker, you are welcome. This is about Van Halen.

Image
On Tuesday, Sammy Hagar announced the 2024 “Best of All Worlds Tour” — a nod to Van Halen’s 2004 “Best of Both Worlds Tour” that featured both Hagar and David Lee Roth.

The Red Rocker will be performing Van Halen material on the trek, and now he’s extended open invitations to both David Lee Roth and Alex Van Halen to join him onstage at some point along the way.

Hagar appeared on The Howard Stern Show alongside his all-star touring band featuring longtime Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony, guitar wizard Joe Satriani, and drummer Jason Bonham. It was during the interview with Stern that Hagar extended the invites, emphasizing that the tour was a celebration of not only his era of the band, but Dlr’s, as well.

“It’s time — nobody else is gonna do it,” said Hagar of performing songs from different eras of Van Halen. “If Dave goes out,...

Spin̈al Tap’s Derek Smalls Returns with New Song “Must Crush Barbie”: Stream
Image
Spin̈al Tap bassist Derek Smalls is back with his first new song in five years: “Must Crush Barbie.”

Nope — Smalls isn’t buying Barbie mania following the release of the blockbuster film this summer. Smalls called it the “embodiment of lukewarm water,” and in his press release, the new song is described as an “excoriating attack on the pink sensation” and a “much-needed antidote to the ubiquitous pinkness that has spilled out of movie theatres this summer and onto the high streets with wall-to-wall media coverage.”

“Must Crush Barbie” is indeed a cantankerous takedown of the Mattel fashion doll brand and the subsequent film. Based around a guitar riff that sounds vaguely like the old Batman television theme, Smalls bellows into the mic such phrases as “wasted film and ink” and “too much pink,” making his point in as few words as possible. The classic Spin̈al Tap sound is alive and well.

How Marvel’s Silver Surfer Met a Rock Guitar God
Image
Joe Satriani is best known as the guitar virtuoso who plumbs the outer regions of space for music which needs no words. His instrumental progression has only yielded a few songs with lyrics, but they tell stories. Satriani’s most recentrecord, The Elephants of Mars, is basically a travelog, which includes a dip in the waters beneath Jupiter’s moon Ganymede. But many Den of Geek readers might remember him as the talent behind a towering ‘90s instrumental record which featured a surprising visual connection to the Marvel Universe.

Satriani’s 1987 album Surfing with the Alien has nothing to do with surf music, a musical genre which produced quite a few brilliant guitarists, or even the Marvel character Silver Surfer. Released on October 15, 1987, Satriani’s second album featured the famed Marvel hero on the front cover and the hand of Galactus on the back, as illustrated by John Byrne.

But...

‘He Got Better and Better’: Joe Satriani on the Legacy of Jeff Beck
Image
When guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani started imagining a recording career for himself based around instrumental compositions, he knew it could be possible — thanks in large part to the fact that the late Jeff Beck had scored hit albums (Blow by Blow, Wired) without the help of a singer a decade earlier. Satriani, who also replaced Beck on Mick Jagger’s 1988 solo tour, shared his thoughts on Beck’s legacy in a new interview on our Rolling Stone Music Now podcast. Here’s his tribute in his own words:

When I started playing,...
