- After supporting songwriter Wolf Biermann, who had been stripped of his citizenship, he was forbidden to work in East Germany and requested to leave the country. He got the approval and moved to West Berlin (1977).
- Besides his acting achievements, he became one of East Germany's most popular singers in the 1960s and 1970s. However, after moving to West Germany, he had been far more successful as an actor, until "Paul Stoever", his character in Tatort (1970), sang with his colleague, played by Charles Brauer, in every episode.
- Wrote two best selling autobiographies, "Abgehauen" (1997, Pushed off) and "Mein schönes Leben" (2005, My beautiful life).
- Apologized in an interview with "Stern" magazine to all shareholders after advertising for "Deutsche Telekom" shares, which later declined in value (2007).
- Krug is still acting in German films and series as "Tatort".
