The EoN James Bond movies, Best to Worst

Eon had a big job with this one
A. To recover the franchise after the terrible Die another day and increasingly gimmicky Brosnan era
B. To adapt Ian Flemings first and arguably best Bond Novel
C. To silence the Daniel Craig naysayers.

While there are still several bond 'fans' who hate Craig for no apparent reason other than his hair colour! His first and clearly best attempt is an amazing film.

This is a very Fleming feeling film which mixes the suave and sophisticated 'bondian' elements with a more gritty realistic 21st century feel. From an original story that is largely just a game of Baccarat, the writers manage to keep the audience glued to there screens, with three massively impressive set pieces, intense dialogue scenes and some more human moments, this is a cohesive and interesting film!

Vesper Lynd is the best Bond girl in a long while and she is a truly three dimensional character. and while LeChiffre is a suitably creepy if not slightly bland villain, the introduction of mr White is perfect (the payoff in quantum is underwhelming, but is more than redeemed in Spectre).

This film has increased in my estimation every time I watch it.

his film is fantastic. Dalton is a great Bond and is true to the literary routes, the opening sequence is among the greats, there are amazing stunts throughout the movie and although the lead villains leave a little to be desired the henchman Necros is one of the best! This film also bought the first truly great bond car in ten years (the Aston Martin v8). Kara although she is a bit too much of an innocent, has really grown on me and her development through the film gives her another dimension.

All in all a great first effort for a new actor (new bonds first films more often than not turn out to be on of there best)!

The epitome of a perfect bond film! Connery is top form in this tense, exciting, Cold War Movie.

All the bondian elements are here without them overshadowing the plot.
This film has two of the best villains in the franchise, and the Bond girl is integral to the plot, without being a mere accessory (although she is a bit of a liability at times).

This is possibly the 60's bond that has aged the best, it can stand on its own merit without the franchise backing it up. Although big stunts and action set pieces weren't yet a bond staple, there are still plenty of thrills (the boat chase and gypsy camp fight stick in my mind).

Because this film doesn't rely on formula, it is actually allowed to have a slightly different and dare i say more interesting plot than the rest of the franchise.

All in all a fab film

This would be much higher on my list of it wasn't for one thing, that one thing was George Lazenby! Why eon hired an Austrailian model and commercial actor with no previous movie or television acting experience is beyond me! Yes he looked the part, but his performance is so wooden and unbelievable.

However, the film itself is incredible! The action set pieces are fantastic the Plot is fast paced tense and a interesting. Diana Rigg is sublime as the only Bond girl deserving to be Mrs bond. And although it's a little distracting that the actor playing blofeld has a completely different look and delivery, telly savalas is an intelligent intimidating Blofeld.

The the end scene is the most affecting in bond movie history, and is the only time Lazenbys delivery is spot on. Definitely one to watch.

I know this will be controversial but I don't care.

I know everyone says Dalton is too humorless to be Bond, but he is legitimately my favourite actor to portray 007, I wish that he would've had a few more opportunities to win everyone else over.

This film is one of the most complex and interesting in the franchise, Bond goes rogue to avenge is CIA partner and closest friend felix Leighter, there is no need for sarcastic quips or jokes in this film as the plot intense and tight! bond bringing down the criminal organisation down from the inside by sowing the seeds of doubt, is well executed and you get the feeling that bond could be found out at any time!


The villains are truly memorable (Robert Davii as Franz Sanchez and a baby faced Benicio del toro as menacing henchman Dario). This film aslo has the most beautiful Bond girl in the franchise (Talisa Soto as Sanchez's girlfriend Lupe Lamora) and up until the ridiculous jealousy plotline Pam bouvier is an interesting character who also has a personal stake in the plot.

There are amazing action set pieces bookending this film (the opening sequence is obviously copied in the dark knight rises)
This film is regularly criticised for being a product of its time and for copying the popular cop and action movies of its time, but this film feels like a truly Fleming-esq Bond movie (which is ironic seeing is this is the first film without a fleming title)

Despite what you may think from my highest ratings. I love Roger Moore as James Bond! His portrayal always make me smile despite how terrible some of his films are!

This is not a terrible film, if goldfinger created the bond formula then the spy who loved me perfected and set it in stone (again not always a good thing!) the plot is a little more than reminiscent of you only live twice and the soundtrack is so 70's it hurts, however the settings are beautiful, the opening sequence is the best bar none! the gadgets and cars are amazing (If a little cartoonish)!

This is the type of bond film roger moore deserved, it's a shame all his films before and after weren't up to scratch.

I'm sure this film sat better with audiences in the 70's when causal racism was acceptable in mainstream culture. However now it's uncomfortable to watch what is clearly bond does blaxploitation.

Like diamonds are forever before and the man with the golden gun which followed, there just isn't that much impressive or exciting going on in this film, the action is bland (twenty minute long boat chase and plane action sequence that involves no flying) the crocodile farm sequence is interesting that's about it.

the villains death is So laughable it destroys any tension built up beforehand

After a six year hiatus bond was back with a bang (or a 220m bunjee jump)

This movie jumpstarted the bond franchise, all the characters are perfect the villains are the best of the Brosnan era (not that that's hard!!) Xenia onnatopp is without question the best femme fatale in the entire series (unless vesper lynd counts!) all the action set pieces are exciting and different, the villains aim was a real threat for a post Cold war capitalist world.

This film is sullied by the fact that Brosnans bond films got progressivally worse and i don't really like Brosnans overly clean cut portrayal of bond! But overall this is a fab film and this feels the most bondian of any post 1990 bond film

Every time I watch 'A View to a Kill' it always baffles me why people hate it so much!

Don't get me wrong, I know it's not the best bond movie, not by a long shot, however there is far more right with it than people give it credit for.

The plot involving flooding Silicon Valley to control the world microchip market is very of its time and although is more than a little reminiscent of Goldfinger, is played with tension until the climax of the film (there's something about racehorse doping in there too but I can't remember how that links so I guess that's a negative).

Sure you can practically here roger Moore creak every time he moves in this, and the stunts are a tad unbelievable for a 57 year old man, but Moore plays to his comedy strengths (I do agree he was too old and his love scenes with both grace Jones and Tanya Roberts were a little vomit inducing!)

The villains are fantastic and played with just the right amount of camp and psychosis by Christopher Walken and Grace Jones. The action set pieces are breathtaking especially the Eiffel Tower and Golden Gate Bridge

Now for the problems, as mentioned above roger Moore is too old, but that's not the main issue, Tanya Roberts, although beautiful is dull, wooden and suffers from Denise Richards syndrome when reciting her scientific speeches. There is a gaggle of annoying third tier characters (San Francisco chief of police, Msr aubergine, pola, dr Mortner etc.) snooper, which just makes no sense as the rest of the gadgets in this film are fairly believeable and useful!

Overall this film could've been fantastic, but even with the problems listed above is still far better than people give it credit for!

This is what everyone thinks of when people say James Bond,. Sean Connery, Jill Masterson covered in gold, the laser, Oddjob, The Aston martin DB5 & pussy galore!

All the elements are here and stronger than before, this film set the formula for bond films for the next twenty years (for better or for worse!!) this is stylistically the most 'bondian' bond.

I know it'll be a shock that this isn't number one, it may be because i overwatched it as a child, but I think it's not top because I think as i said above this film is what paved the way for some of the less than spectacular bond films.

That being said you can't fault this film as a perfect bond film and mid sixties action film!

This contrary to what so many critics said, is not the best bond film! This is a very good post 1990 bond film and has done wonders for the franchise and MGM/UA.

There is a great deal of style over substance here (the Beijing skyscraper fight scene & the climatic battle are both too dark to watch (not in tone; they are literally too dark to figure out what's happening), and bonds 'life after death' Scenes Seem way too far from bond even for an agent in hiding). The villains escape plot is a little too reminiscent of the dark night, and the Bond girls are all particularly bland.

However there is a great deal to love in this film, Judi dench's sublime M finally gets a fleshed out role, the new Q is a fun return towards the bond formula (Although I'm not completely sold
On the new Moneypenny yet, but I'm happy to be proved wrong), javier Bardem is a fantastic villain (his chemistry with Craig's bond is palpable) the callbacks to past bond films are fun and don't slap you in the face *cough* Die another Day *cough* and the lighter touches are back without affecting the mood of the whole film, the opening scene is fab (particularly after Quantum motion sickness inducing opening) even with the blatant product placement! 'VW beetles, I think'...groan!!

Without the underwater sequences (all 25 minutes worth!) this film is an exciting fast paced if completely ridiculous bond film. With these sequences it's an incredibly slow paced and dull film.

This film feels like bond jumping the shark, everything is overblown, a villain with an eyepatch plastic Surgery exact doubles, shark infested swimming pools, gadgets, gadgets, gadets, a jetpack (seriously I still don't get why this is so iconic), a villain in drag and underwater sex!

That being said the majority of this film is incredibly entertaining (apart from any underwater scenes as mentioned above) and was the highest grossing bond film ever (still is if you adjust for inflation) bond may not have survived past Connery if not for thunderball

This film seemed to have an unfairly negative response upon release, the only reason I can think is because it followed the universally loved 'Skyfall'.

I personally think this is a fantastic bond film, the opening sequence is action packed and stands amongst the strongest pre credits sequence, although personally I think the staging Is a little off.

Both well staged and fantastically paced! The only let down action wise is the car chase around Rome, both cars seem to handle too well to make it exciting and I find it hard to believe that hinx wouldn't have noticed bond ejecting at the end.

The reintroduction of the spectre crime sindicate is perfect and the board meeting harks back to Connery era films without being overly nostalgic. Both the main villain and lead henchmen are fantastically cast and are perfect for this film, and the end of the mr White story arc is perfect, even if the character was criminally underused in previous Craig films!

The lead Bond girl is interesting if unremarkable, and her and bonds relationship seems like an afterthought.

The best thing about spectre is that it feels like a proper bond film!! The gun barrel sequence is back at the beginning where it belongs, the theme song and credits are fantastic and are back to the days of Maurice binders scantily clad women, the sets all feel like Ken Adam designs and the MI6 team is back in full force! And after a slightly dodgy start in skyfall i warmed massively to Mallory, Moneypenny and Q.

The story is good if a little bare! The films major problem is the descision to try and tie together all of Craig's bond films, it just feels too laboured and trying to link skyfall to the canon doesn't really work!

But as I said overall this is a fantastic film and I'm sure overtime its reputation will improve!

Replace Sean Connery with Mike Myers and this would work as an Austin powers film with no script changes!

This film fun but completely Ridiculous, bond disguises himself as Japanese by styling his hair differently! There are female surgeons in there underwear, the most unattractive femme fatale ever, ninjas, a corridor with a funhouse slide into an allies office. a volcano lair and a tiny helicopter! If thunderball is where bond jumped the shark, you only live twice is where it jumped so high it went into orbit! Very fun but completely bonkers!

The first bond film! Although this movie is lacking some of the suave sheen and big action set pieces the series is now famous for, it introduced most people to the character of James Bond.

Although this film suffers from a tiny budget and ironically a lack of formula, some of the elements are spot on, honey Ryder still tops lists of the best Bond girls, the title character, is an unnervingly calm villain, even if his plan isn't particularly memorable (something to do with rockets and nuclear power?). The fights are too choreographed, the action isn't big enough and the assassination attempt by a mildly posionous spider must've been laughable even in the sixties (in the Novel it is by a poisonous millipede).

However this film must be given credit as it has spawned 23 official sequels and counting! Plus no matter how bad. You can't go wrong with a Connery bond film

I think i judge this film less harshly than I should, purely because it is the first bond film I ever saw.

It starts off amazingly with an exciting pre credits sequence which segways nicely in to the rest of the film, then the pace takes a nosedive and never really recovers.
sure there are a few good action set pieces (the parahawks, the caviar factory and the nuclear bunker being highlights) but the film never really gets going.

you can see the twist a mile off and having a villain that feels no pain just makes the climax dull, and not to beat a dead horse but Denise Richards playing a nuclear physicist who dresses like Lara croft...really??

Without all the space nonsense this would be a solid roger Moore bond film almost on par with the spy who loved me, but sending a yellow jumpsuits bond up into space was never going to work. Gadgets are all well and good but when laser guns are in a bond film it's time to re assess!

The first half of the film is a fun if ott action film, the villain is creepy and menacing, the henchman chao is good but not great and the secondary Bond girl corrine is a great character.

The film starts to fall apart once we get to rio, it becomes clear that we are not going to get rid of holly goodhead any time soon and jaws falls in love (i can't express how much I loathe this!!) then bond fights a rubber snake goes to space, shoots a laser gun and has weightless sex! Groan!

If the film carried on the way the first half did it would be several places higher, but i can't tolerate the train wreck of a 2nd act

Dull dull dull dull dull! The first truly boring bond film, the plot does not sustain for two hours. there are no memorable action set pieces (apart from the single most amazing car stunt ever filmed, buried in a boring twenty minute chase and ruined by a slide whistle!) the films climax is just odd!

The main redeeming feature of this film is Christopher lee as an excellent scaramanga who has great screen presence and fantastic chemistry with Moore who gives one of his better bond performances.

Kudos also to maud Adams as Andrea Anders an interesting character as scaramangas kept woman, who undoes some of the damage done by Britt eckland

This film has actually improved in my rating by a significant amount since I originally wrote this list! Sure it has tone problems and the plot is incredibly convoluted, but this film feels like a real travelogue, the settings are all beautiful and interesting, the action is all fairly well executed and Louis Jordan is one of the funnest main villains in the series

A ridiculous plot, an annoying lead villain and the start of too much cgi hurt this film a lot. I know I'm not a Brosnan fan but this film is just a bit boring, the action is great (the carpark chase sticks in my mind as does the helicopter bike jump) but everything in between is just meh!

I can't really comment on this film much as I find it so boring I have never managed to watch it in one sitting! The most exciting element is the poster, which was banned in several countries due to its raunchy nature.

It doesn't bode well when the best stunt is bond falling off a cliff, the score is terrible, everything feels like a retread of old ideas (the franchise was almost 20). The vendetta story would be intersting but the audience has no connection to the havelock family when they are murderd and melina just seems reckless and counter productive to the story.

Bring back fun Moore!

Definitely a case of style over substance. Taken individually there are many elements of this film i love, and if this hadn't gone into production just as the writers strike started this could've been a much better movie!

The plot is dull (it's literally about stealing water) as is the villain (neither creepy nor intimidating). The camera crew and editiors seemed to be drunk througout this movie.

Everything in this film would make a great bond film of it was just tweaked slightly but as it is it falls very short.

The only bearable way to watch this film is as a prologue to casino royale, but unless you have 6 hours to kill I wouldn’t bother!

And as a side note the theme song is awful!

Connery goes through the motions in the most americanised bond film to date!!

I cringe so much when I think of this film. There are very few redeeming features (they even cocked up what could be a great car stunt, by filming the start and finish on opposite wheels).

Charles gray (better known as the criminalologist from rocky horror) is a campy non threatening blofeld, the man appears in drag for God sakes!!

The Bond girls are all horrible shallow characters, The Vegas setting removes any sophistication from the bond character and movie! The moon buggy is ridiculous as are the henchmen.

It is obvious that Connery is only here for a paycheck. On the plus side the theme song is great!

Was there any question that this would be last?

There are so many ridiculous plot points in this film that even Austin powers would say 'that's a bit farfected'.

There really isn't anything to say that you haven't read 1000 times but it's all correct, from abhorrent CGI, invisible cars, shoehorned in callbacks to past films, a dream mask, cosmetic surgery to change nationality and diamond encrusted henchmen, this film is full to bursting with dross.

The only saving grace of this film is Rosamund pikes portrayal of double agent Miranda frost, her excellent performance deserves a much better movie than this.
