Joseph Di Palma, a producer and longtime sponsor of the syndicated program Nightly Business Report, died March 4 of pneumonia at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, his wife, Joycelyn Engle, announced. He was 94.

Di Palma produced such features as The Innocent and the Damned (2005), Amazing Racer (2009) — also known as Shannon’s Rainbow — and Awakened (2013).

He also was behind The Di Palma Forum, a four-year celebrity interview TV series that benefited the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. It featured high-profile guests discussing national issues.

He sponsored the Nightly Business Report, which was syndicated by American Public Television, for a decade.

Di Palma was born on Jan. 17, 1931, in New York and raised in Forest Hills Gardens. His parents were Gaetano Di Palma, a civil engineer who built the Italian Pavilion at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York, and Michela May Ambrosio Di Palma.

December was a great year for Netflix, as it premiered many popular titles. Among them, it was a disaster miniseries that became a huge streaming success.

The polarizing miniseries La Palma debuted on the platform on Dec. 12. Only five weeks later, after enjoying several weeks in Netflix's Top 10, La Palma joined a prestigious list: the Top 10 Most Popular Non-English Shows. The series is currently in eighth place. This comes after the Norwegian miniseries was the fifth most-watched series between the week of Dec. 19 and Dec. 25 on all streaming platforms.

In 1999 “The Sixth Sense,” a spooky-ooky movie involving ghosts and a freaky little kid who sees them, opened theatrically and quickly became a cultural sensation and a box office juggernaut. It would end up earning $672 million at the global box office and garnering six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Its signature line of dialogue (“I see dead people”) would enter the lexicon, endlessly quoted, parodied and spoofed.

El director de ‘The Florida Project’ se lleva la prestigiosa Palma de Oro.

La 77ª edición del prestigiosísimo festival de Cannes ha concluido. En esta edición, la Palma de Oro, el máximo galardón del festival al que aspira todo cineasta que pasa por la Croisette, ha sido para la película de Neon, “Anora”, dirigida por Sean Baker, más conocido por la película “The Florida Project”. Con este triunfo, la distribuidora Neon ha conseguido la prestigiosa Palma de Oro por quinta vez consecutiva, algo que se dice muy rápido: “Anora” en 2024, “Anatomía de una Caída” en 2023, “El Triángulo de la Tristeza” en 2022, “Titane” en 2021 y “Parásitos” en 2019. De esta forma, “Anora” se convierte en una muy fuerte candidata para la próxima temporada de premios. No solo la película, mucho ojo, porque la actuación de su protagonista, Mikey Madison, ha dado mucho que hablar.

Revenge director Coralie Fargeat’s new body horror satire, The Substance, screened at the Cannes Film Festival over the weekend, and the reactions have been (mostly) very positive - although it sounds like the movie has its share of shocking moments.

The film focuses on an acclaimed actress turned celebrity host of a daytime exercise program (Demi Moore) who gets replaced by a younger star (Margaret Qualley), sparking a confrontation between the two women that ultimately turns violent.

The Substance reportedly features some pretty extreme gore, but the scene that's sparked the most discussion is a brutal fight between Moore and Qualley's characters - complete with graphic, full-frontal nudity.

“I had someone who was a great partner,” said Moore of her co-star. “We were obviously quite close at some moments… and naked. But there was also a levity [in shooting those scenes].”

Exclusive: Mars Media’s Ruben Dishdishyan and Amedia Production’s Len Blavatnik, two of the most significant figures in the Russian biz, have entered into a five-year agreement to co-produce and co-finance feature films.

The deal is a formalization of an existing partnership that to date has seen the companies team on projects including local box office hit A Dog Named Palma as well as its upcoming sequel, and the war drama T-34, which was a box office smash in China and was picked up for international territories by Netflix. In post-production are historical epic Woland, an adaptation of The Master and Margarita, and sci-fi action-adventure Mira.

The producers are aiming to make 10 features together over the next five years. Already in development are Alexander Pushkin’s epic fairytale Ruslan and Ludmila and an adaptation of Boris and Arkady Strugatsky’s famed sci-fi mystery novel The Dead Mountaineer’s Hotel.
