Combining the religious base of his feature debut, “Ave Maryam”, with the social commentary regarding the labor market of “Cross the Line”, Razka Robby Ertanto attempts to come up with a film that unfolds in a number of levels. Let us see how he fares.
Yohanna is screening at International Film Festival Rotterdam
As the movie begins, we watch the titular nun running around with Malu, a girl who has left the convent she is living in some time ago, trying to rent a car in order to distribute relief to areas in Sumba, which was subjected to a number of natural disasters along with the consequences of Covid. They finally manage to secure one, but just after they arrive to their destination, the van is stolen. Top Indonesian star Laura Basuki headlines auteur Razka Robby Ertanto’s “Yohanna,” which has its world premiere in competition at International Film Festival Rotterdam.
The film follows young nun Yohanna, whose encounter with the underworld of child labor in the eastern island of Sumba, one of the poorest places in Indonesia, restores her sense of purpose in life.
For Ertanto, whose “Cross the Line” (2022) looked at migrant workers and “Ave Maryam” (2018) that examined aspects of the Christian faith, the idea for “Yohanna” was born after a visit to Sumba, where he was saddened to see eight-year-old laborers who looked like worn out elders. He resolved to tell their story and present the case for their freedom.
“Child labor in Indonesia is a very important topic that we need to raise awareness about in my country and abroad. Many people fight for good causes whether it’s for the country or...

The second teaser trailer for Netflix’s Bird Box spinoff, Bird Box Barcelona, reveals much more of the terror the citizens of Barcelona are feeling as the creatures launch their attack. The premise remains the same as the original film – cover your eyes and never ever look at the creatures – but the setting switches to show how the world’s dealing with these bizarre beasts.
Bird Box starring Oscar winner Sandra Bullock premiered in December 2018, and the spinoff will debut on Netflix on July 14, 2023. Goya award winner Mario Casas (No matarás) leads the cast of the spinoff, starring Georgina Campbell, Alejandra Howard, Naila Schuberth, Diego Calva, and Patrick Criado.
In addition, Lola Dueñas, Gonzalo De Castro, Michelle Jenner, and Leonardo Sbaraglia also star.
Álex Pastor and David Pastor penned the screenplay and co-directed. Dylan Clark, Chris Morgan, Núria Valls, Adrián Guerra, Josh Malerman, and Ryan Lewis produced the post-apocalyptic thriller.

Bird Box was regarded as one of the best thrillers when it was released in 2018 on Netflix. The movie became an instant sensation, eventually becoming many people's favorite due to its riveting plot and outstanding performances by the actors involved, particularly Sandra Bullock.
If you're unfamiliar with the premise of Bird Box, the story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where people go insane simply by gazing outdoors, which is the result of demonic creatures possessing people and committing horrible atrocities. The survivors who have figured out the problem have sealed up inside their homes, covering everything in the hopes that it will all pass away soon.
While it's understandable that you'd be disappointed to learn that you can no longer experience the film for the first time, you should know that a spin-off known as Bird Box Barcelona is currently in production and set to release very soon. It...

Written and directed by Victori, it is also the first Spanish production resulting from an alliance struck between Legendary Television and Spain’s Espotlight Media.

One night out and loosening up a bit after a long, gruelling time of personal anxiety. What could possibly go wrong? Uhmm... a lot. Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best, provided that they're well executed. Thankfully, David Victori's Cross the Line (released in its homeland of Spain as No Matarás) fully fits in this category. As thrillers go, this story of a descent into an ever bigger mess doesn't bring anything new to the table, but it hits all notes as thoroughly and confidently as a good song does. And Victori's biggest win is in creating empathy for his main character. Because ooooh boy, do we feel for this guy. In Cross the Line we follow Dani, a shy and gentle young man who...

In 2006, the French feature film adaptation of Harlan Coben’s “Tell No One” set a precedent that the author’s work could not only be adapted to the screen, winning a slew of awards including four Cesars, but that it could do so outside of the stories’ native U.S.

Most recently, Coben teamed with Spanish thriller maestro Oriol Paulo on “The Innocent” (“El inocente”), which will premiere globally on April 30. Up next...

At one of its increasingly regular presentations, on Thursday Netflix Spain unveiled seven new projects including “If Only,” a Spanish adaptation of the Netflix Turkish original canceled before shooting by Turkish authorities.
Where once Netflix would host its presentations early in the year and announce its ambitions for the next 12 months, the platform’s original Spanish programming pipeline has grown to an extent that Thursday’s showcase only covers the next few months and hinted at plenty more to come in late 2021.
In both level and volume of production, the day’s announcements confirm Netflix as one of if not the, foremost investors in original Spanish series and movies, at the same as its talent pool is expanding to include ever more of the principal producers in Spain. New Netflix originals are now being produced by now-regular partners Nostromo, producers of “The Minions of Midas”; “Élite” producers Zeta Studios; “Money Heist...

It’s happening. It’s finally happening. What was once a particularly pervasive and aggressive Internet meme is now a reality. HBO Max’s list of new releases for March 2021 is highlighted by none other than the mythical Snyder cut.
The entity now known as Zach Snyder’s Justice League will premiere on March 18. While it was originally planned to be a four-part miniseries, this recut version of 2017’s ill-fated Justice League will in fact be a four-hour movie. But perhaps even four hours won’t be enough for fans who have been waiting years for just such an event.

Carolina Astudillo’s “Song to a Lady in the Shadow,” Fabrizio Ferraro’s “The Luminous View,” Jo Sol’s “Armugan,” and Miguel Angel Blanca’s “Magaluf Ghost Town” feature among a 31-title lineup hosted by promotion board Catalan Films at an European Film Market virtual screening room.
Produced by Cornelius Films, “Song” marks the third feature outing of director Carolina Astudillo. A doc-fiction hybrid, it turns on a family whose father is exiled in France after fighting for the Republican government during the Spanish Civil War. Echoing Homer’s Penelope, his wife stays behind with their children in a Catalan village suffering hunger, deprivation, economic crisis and unemployment.
Another awaited documentary, “Magaluf,” is produced by Boogaloo Films in co-production with France’s Les Films d’Ici. Director Blanca depicts the consequences of unbridled tourism in a popular destination in the Balearic Islands, with a touch of comedy.

Box office in Spain crashed 72% in 2020 to a total €169.7 million ($207 million), with Covid-19 wiping over half a billion dollars from box office sales this year, Comscore announced Tuesday.
By way of comparison, 2019 total box office in Spain stood at €605 million ($738 million). Spanish cinema admissions similarly plunged from 105 million tickets sold last year, a recent-year record, to 28.2 million in 2020.
In line with analysts’ expectations for not only Spain but much of Europe, admissions were the lowest since records began in 1965, and plunged despite cinema theaters remaining open in most of Spain since late June, save for Catalonia and Andalusia, in contrast to Europe’s other biggest markets.
Yet even in such dire circumstances, there were blue sky moments. The highest-grossing movie of the year opened in Spain, for example, after Covid-19 had hit Madrid harder than any other city in Europe.

Appropriately blessed by sunshine in Spain, though the whole event went online, the Malaga Film Festival’s Spanish Screenings wrapped Friday, though films will continue to screen another week given the demand for screenings. The equivalent of France’s UniFrance Rendez-vous with French cinema in Paris, the Screenings proved a bellwether for far larger trends coursing the American Film Market and the international market at large. Following, five takeaways:
The French Connection
The Malaga Spanish Screenings rounded their final bend on Friday with news that France’s Playtime Group, one of Europe’s premier film sales-production groups with companies across Europe, has boarded Vaca Films’ “Project Emperor.” The Playtime-Vaca relation stretches back a decade to one of Spain’s biggest modern break-outs, “Cell 211.” It now forms part of a fast multiplying web of Gallic connections with Spain, as French companies buy into the global reach of Spanish-language fiction.

As Covid-19 cases spike, Europe is once again taking serious measures to curb the virus’ spread. After initially shuttering its movie theaters in late February and then reopening in June, Italy is now set to close cinemas once again from tomorrow. At the same time, Spain has approved a new national state of alarm and is introducing a nationwide curfew from 11Pm to 6Am, though regions have a margin of one hour on either side, El Pais reports.
The moves come after France widely extended a 9Pm to 6Am curfew to numerous areas across the country this past week.
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte today announced that bars and restaurants must cease daily service as of 6Pm beginning Monday. Cinemas, live theaters, gaming halls and discos will be closed altogether. Italy was once the hardest hit European nation and in early March, became the first to impose strict confinement as...

Set to screen at the upcoming Sitges International Film Festival, David Victori's No matarás (English title: Cross the Line) stars Spanish actor Mario Casas, who is well-known among his fans for his lead performances, especially in romantic dramas and on various television shows, and he continues to show up in very interesting supporting roles, such as films by Alex de la Iglesia. Thus, it's not surprising that the trailer initially appears to be for a hard-edged romantic. Then it quickly develops into a much more desperate kind of thing, which is of much greater interest for genre fans. According to the official synopsis: "Dani doesn't exist for himself, but only to take care of his ailing father. When he dies,...

Steady market trade, mixed response to festival films.
Heading into the second week of a rainy Berlin lacking Asian buyers due to Coronavirus fears, there has been a mixed response to the inaugural festival selections of Carlo Chatrian, and a steady stream of Efm deal-making with at least one spectacular Us acquisition understood to be in the works.
Occurring later than usual due to the Academy’s decision to bring the Oscars forward this year, Berlin kicked off 17 days after Sundance Film Festival. That offered some comfort to sales agents in their annual scramble with producers and agents to lock in talent.
