When the original Police Academy barnstormed its way into theaters in 1984, nobody had any way of knowing that this film would be a franchise with 7 films to its credit. Grossing hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office, what Police Academy achieved is nothing short of astounding. With a cast of mostly unknown character actors, this film clicked with a public who seemed to be starved for the wacky, slapstick comic situations that Police Academy so deftly offered.
Making this even more astounding is that it wasn't like 1984 was devoid of comedies. Ghostbusters and Beverly Hills Cop were both in theaters and each one of these raked in many millions of dollars. Somehow, Police Academy placed 6th on this list beating out such films as Footloose, Romancing the Stone and Splash. So how did this movie that was made for $4.5 million dollars go on to become a franchise? Well,...

The official announcement for the DVD and Blu-ray release of Alien: Covenant has arrived in the Us, and it’s brought with it confirmation of a lot of excised footage.
See related Luc Besson interview: Valerian, sci-fi, Adele Blanc-Sec
The disc is set to include 12 deleted and extended scenes in all, running to just shy of 18 minutes. Quite what those deleted scenes are remains to be seen, although it’s expected that at least one or two will centre around the prologue sequence at the start of the film.
Intriguingly, the disc is also set to include a 55 minute Ridley Scott masterclass feature, that’ll presumably dig into the making of the movie in some depth. Furthermore, Scott has provided an audio commentary too.

Police Academy is the latest classic '80s comedy in line for a remake - and original star Steve Guttenberg approves.
Key and Peele creators Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele are currently at work producing the latest film in the comedy franchise, rumoured to be titled Police Academy: Next Generation.
Speaking to Digital Spy, Guttenberg revealed that he'd love to be involved in the new Police Academy in some form.
"Of course," he said. "Police Academy is so dear to my heart and has given me such great success - I was very lucky to be in four of the seven of them and they were extraordinarily successful, and added a great amount of heat to my career - so I'm thrilled that they're going to do another one."
Guttenberg, who played rascally cop Mahoney in Police Academy, added that he sees the planned remake as a compliment to his original comedy.

Comedian Jordan Peele is set to write and direct the horror film "Get Out". Despite his funny man background though on the series "Key and Peele," this will be a straight up horror film.
Talking about the project with Playboy, Peele says:
"I've been spending the first half of my career focusing on comedy but my goal, in all honesty, is to write and direct horror movies.
I have one that I'm working on with Darko Entertainment called Get Out – I don't want to say too much about it, but it is one of the very, very few horror movies that does jump off of racial fears. That to me is a world that hasn't been explored.
Specifically, the fears of being a black man today. The fears of being any person who feels like they're a stranger in any environment that is foreign to them. It deals with a...

Margaret here with your update on comedy greenlights. Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, stars of the eponymous highly-rated Comedy Central sketch show, are making time in their busy schedule of routinely putting SNL to shame to produce and star in their first joint film project. They just inked a deal with New Line to make Keanu. No, it's not the long-overdue biopic following the rise and fall of the actor who brought us Neo, Ted "Theodore" Logan, and a very Sad Meme. The script, penned by Peele and Community writer Alex Rubens, follows two friends who pretend to be drug dealers to get back a stolen cat (named, you guessed it, Keanu). Peter Atencio, veteran director of Key & Peele, is in talks to direct, and production is slated to begin in April. Says Peele: "The movie should resonate with a large audience as almost everyone has had a house...

After exploding on Comedy Central with their sketch series Key & Peele, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele are heading to the big screen for their first joint film project, titled Keanu.
The movie, centering on two friends who masquerade as drug dealers to infiltrate the criminal underworld in hopes of retrieving a purloined cat (the Keanu of the title), won out over a Police Academy reboot, a Judd Apatow flick and a spinoff of Mr. Garvey, aka Substitute Teacher, as the duo’s first big-screen starring vehicle.
Though the pair co-starred in FX’s Fargo and have had separate gigs in films like The Lego Movie and Let’s Be Cops (Key) and Wanderlust and Little Fockers (Peele), Keanu will serve as their first joint film.
Peele and Alex Rubens, who has written for Key & Peele and also Community, handled script-writing duties. Said Peele:

The thing about Key & Peele is that every time they come up with an idea that’s stranger than the last one, it seems perfectly normal. The comedy duo brought us sketches featuring a continental breakfast-themed nod to The Shining (with go-gurts, to stay), an elaborate Les Miz production just about how nobody gets the chance to clearly talk during the entire musical and of course, Mr. Garvey, the substitute teacher who can’t quite get the pronunciation of his white students’ names correct and is livid when anyone challenges him. Though Key & Peele (full names Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele) had been in talks to make a film about their Mr. Garvey character, that’s apparently not up next. Neither is their proposed Police Academy reboot and their untitled project with Judd Apatow. Instead, their upcoming film is Keanu, the story of two best friends who pose as drug dealers and go undercover in the seedy...

We already know that Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, the sketch comedy duo better known as Key & Peele, are teaming with Judd Apatow for a comedy feature film, producing the reboot of Police Academy, and they're also developing a feature film for their substitute teacher character Mr. Garvey. But now they have another project in the works at New Line as Deadline reports the two are shifting their focus to a comedy called Keanu. Sadly, the film doesn't focus on Keanu Reeves, but instead follows friends who pose as drug dealers to infiltrate the criminal underworld in order to retrieve the title character, a stolen cat. Keanu will beat all the other developing comedies to the punch with production beginning in April in Los Angeles. Key & Peele will both star in the film with the latter scripting with Alex Rubens, who writes on the duo's Comedy Central series as well as "Community.

This weekend Kevin Hart stars in "Think Like A Man Too," a wedding-themed studio comedy. But that doesn't mean that the star, whose shrill, high-pitched scream is like a soothing lullaby to me, is done with wedding-themed studio comedies. This January he'll star in "The Wedding Ringer" as a best man-for-hire, who works with Josh Gad in assembling a crack team of groomsmen for his upcoming wedding. (Gad, it turns out, is something of a loser.)
The movie has kind of a funny hook, and a few hilarious lines in the frantic trailer (when inspecting the team of groomsmen Hart has assembled, Gad remarks, "It looks like the cast of 'Goonies' grew up to become rapists"). It was co-written and directed by Jeremy Garelick, who wrote the Vince Vaughn/Jennifer Aniston movie "The Break-Up" and has a hand in the upcoming "Police Academy" reboot.

And that's before even mentioning the movies he's developing, which include a reboot of the “Police Academy” series and an untitled comedy he's writing with partner-in-crime Jordan Peele for producer Judd Apatow. Key grew up in Detroit and met Peele when they competed for an open slot on Fox's alternative...

Last week’s episode of Fargo introduced Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele as the FBI agents who completely miss it when Billy Bob Thornton’s Lorne Malvo strolls by brandishing a machine gun and proceeds to shoot up the crime syndicate the hapless feds have been staking out. Unsurprisingly, executive producer Noah Hawley calls them the show's own Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Currently hard at work on the upcoming third season of Key & Peele (featuring Hillary Clinton's anger translator), the sketch comedy duo took a quick time-out to chat with Vulture about what’s ahead for agents Pepper and Budge and preliminary casting ideas for the Police Academy reboot they're producing.Lorne Malvo and his hair walk right in front of them, and they don’t notice. That’s some real suspension of disbelief right there. Key: Such a peculiar-looking human being and they’re not paying any attention. They’re talking about preservatives,...

Fans of “Key & Peele” were in for a treat on Tuesday night's episode of “Fargo” on FX. Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele have joined the show for the remainder of its first season as a pair of FBI agents. If their first appearance is any indication, they won't be straying too far from their comedic roots to do it. Comedians Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele -- known for their Comedy Central sketch show "Key & Peele" -- are teaming up again for a big screen project: a reboot of the "Police Academy" series.
The Hollywood Reporter writes that the duo are joining original "Police Academy" producer Paul Maslansky in reviving the franchise, which spawned seven films and two TV series from 1984 to 1994. Maslansky has been attached to the reboot for several years, and while the film has seen collaborators come and go -- including onetime director Scott Zabielski -- the producer told THR in 2010 that he was determined to populate the project with emerging comedic talent, something the addition of Key and Peele confirms.
"It's going to be very worthwhile to the people who remember it and to those who saw it on TV," Maslansky told THR at the time. "It's going to be a new class. We hope to...

The Police Academy franchise has become something of a punchline over the years, but that hasn’t stopped talks of rebooting the wacky adventures of moviedom’s most unlikely police cadets. Things have been stalled for awhile, but two hilarious, well-known producers may change that. Keegan Michael Key and Jordan Peele are reportedly in talks to enroll at the Academy in an upcoming relaunch. The duo behind Comedy Central’s Key & Peele sketch comedy show would serve in a producing capacity, but could also appear in the film as well. Personally, we like the sound of this. Screenwriter Jeremy Garelick is currently writing a new draft of the script, which will presumably find a group of unlikely cadets squaring off against the staid and inept instructors at the...

Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, best known as the comedic duo behind Comedy Central's "Key & Peele" sketch comedy show, have a couple things going on outside their television show such as a project they're developing with Judd Apatow at Universal and cameo roles in FX's upcoming "Fargo", but now they're traveling down a path I'd prefer they'd run from. The Wrap reports the duo are working with New Line Cinema to once again tackle the Police Academy franchise with Jeremy Garelick (The Break-Up) penning the screenplay. The key here, however, is Key and Peele aren't, at least not currently, set to star in the film. Their only attachment as of now is as producers, which seems to suggest New Line is merely hoping to trade off the duo's name recognition and little else. Well, I guess they'd probably throw a few story ideas out there, but when it comes...

There’s no doubt that Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele have established themselves as a formidable comedic duo, as exemplified by their hit show “Key & Peele” which Comedy Central renewed for a fourth season earlier this year. Their success has lead to the duo being offered a couple of different projects over the past few months: they’re currently developing a feature film with Judd Apatow at Universal and they’re slated to appear as FBI agents in the upcoming FX drama “Fargo.” Now New Line Cinema hopes to get a piece of the Key & Peele action as they’re currently in talks with the duo about producing a “Police Academy” reboot. Yes, you heard that correctly… after seven films and two separate television shows, New Line Cinema is looking to dust off those uniforms for yet another “Police Academy” movie. This reboot has been in development for quite some...

New Line Cinema has been threatening a Police Academy reboot for years, but only now does it look like all of their efforts may be going towards a good idea. Why? Because The Wrap is reporting that the studio is talking with Keegan Michael Key and Jordan Peele about the possibility of producing the new movie. With Tosh.0 director Scott Zabielski no longer attached to the project, apparently New Line wanted to infuse the project with some new blood, which is what led to the Key and Peele negotiations. Right now the comedy duo is only in talks to produce the project, though there is a possibility that they could end up starring in the movie as well. It all depends on the quality of the script, which is currently being written by Jeremy Garelick (The Break-Up). For those of you who aren't familiar with Key and Peele, the comedy...

WhatCulture! recently sat down for an exclusive interview with renowned film composer Robert Folk. Best known for his work on ‘Beastmaster 2’, ‘The Neverending Story 2’, ‘Toy Soldiers’, ‘Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls’ and of course, ‘Police Academy’, the 63-year-old L.A based musician is spritely and charming. Folk, who was born in New York, has an East Coast accent with a soft warm roll in it; something which one comes to associate with the cultured and educated members of American society. Sporting a healthy glow, he sits in an office decorated with posters of the films he has previously scored – a customary sight amongst film professionals.
During our one-to-one in depth chat Folk talks about IMAX ballet, the ‘Police Academy’ reboot and his work as replacement composer on Roland Joffe’s soon to be released, re-cut, re-mixed, re-packaged historical epic ‘There Be Dragons’ entitled ‘There Be Dragons: Secrets of Passion’.

To quote the great Commandant Lassard, it has been “many, many wonderful” years since the original ‘Police Academy’ was released. From those days of risqué humour, walking one man sound effects and ‘Carry On’ style antics, grew a franchise that just refused to die. Some instalments were fun whilst others were nearly unwatchable, but still Mahoney and Co held a special place in American culture.
Whatever way you look at it, the 1984 original was a huge success and earned over $80 million at the box office, meaning a modern continuation was always inevitable. We heard news a while back that newbie director Scott Zabielski was directing some sort of sequel, but things have been quiet for a very long time.

Veteran reality TV director and producer Scott Zabielski earned a loyal following as the director of the Comedy Central series Tosh.O, featuring comedian Daniel Tosh selecting the craziest footage from the web. Zabielski looked to put his comic skills to good use reviving the long-running Police Academy franchise, last seen in 1994’s Police Academy: Mission to Moscow. Variety reported today that Zabielski won over a number of veteran directors all anxious to reboot the comedy franchise they grew up watching. David Diamond and David Weissman wrote the redo script with original Police Academy producer Paul Masiansky returning for the reboot.

While everyone was obsessing over the not-yet-aired Academy Awards show a couple weeks ago, I was running around in circles at the news that "Police Academy" was coming back. Not just that, but series producer Paul Maslansky was leading the charge to bring it back. This is very exciting news for me, as the "Police Academy" series is one that stands out in my formative experiences with film.
I immediately put in a call to Maslansky, not even daring to hope that he would speak with the press at such an early stage. He did though, and we had a lengthy conversation about the past, present and future of "Police Academy." The specific details haven't yet been hammered out, but it's clear from talking to the man that there's a plan which all involved parties are focused on carrying out. There's too much from the interview to contain in a single blog post,...

New Line is looking for recruits for a relaunched "Police Academy" movie. Original producer Paul Maslansky is back for the new iteration, which has no writer or director attached.
"Academy" was a seven-film lowbrow comedy series from Warner Bros. that saw a city throw open the doors of its police force to any recruit, much to the chagrin of its serious officers. The misfit officers band together and, of course, save the city.
The first film, released in 1984, starred Steve Guttenberg as Mahoney, a repeat offender who is forced to enter the academy and emerges as the group's leader. Other notable characters included Moses Hightower (Bubba Smith), gun-crazy Tackleberry (David Graf), mousy Hooks (Marion Ramsey) and sound effects-spewing Larvell Jones (Michael Winslow).
Bobcat Goldthwait joined the cast for the second movie in 1985. The series, which included Kim Cattrall and Sharon Stone as romantic leads, ended with the 1994's "Mission to Moscow.

Just when you thought the movie world had lost its ability to surprise, it pulls out the possibility of a Police Academy 8.
A potential eighth instalment of the zany police comedy was confirmed by its star, Steve Guttenberg, who wants to reprise his role as lovable rogue Carey Mahoney.
“We are doing a new movie and it is going to be great fun,” Guttenberg said. “A script is being written and so far it is really great, everyone from the original movies who is still around will return.”
“I know Kim (Cattrall, who starred in the original movie) and Sharon (Stone, who starred in Police Academy 4: Citizens On Patrol) have been asked but they haven’t said yes yet. It would be really great to have them on board.”
But why would they want to get on board???

New 'Police Academy' film in works
Police Academy is back. After a decade's absence from the big screen, Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow are teaming up to co-finance the eighth sequel in the popular franchise, which went on to spawn two television series and a worldwide stunt show. Warners-based Jerry Weintraub is on board to produce, and series creator Paul Maslansky is executive producing with Village Roadshow's Bruce Berman. The project is out to writers, with the exact direction of the newest installment yet to be determined. "I felt it was time to start again," said Maslansky, who came up with the idea of reviving the franchise. He took the idea to Berman, who then pitched it to Warners. "I saw that Starsky & Hutch and a number of other revivals were doing really well. Police Academy has such a great history. I thought, 'Why not?' "...
