Filed a lawsuit against Howard University in 2002 for discriminating against her as a white woman. Dolezal claimed that the university's decision to remove some of her artworks from a February 2001 student exhibition was "motivated by a discriminatory purpose to favor African-American students" over her.

Has 3 sons: an adopted son Izaiah Dolezal (b.1994) who is actually her adopted brother, Franklin Moore (b.2002) with her ex-husband Kevin Moore and Langston Attickus (b.February 16, 2016).

In a Season 4 episode of the parody series Angie Tribeca, Trader Foes (2018), a tanning bed is shown with a toaster-style darkness setting, whose darkest setting is labeled "Rachel Dolezal".

Daughter of Ruthanne Dolezal (née Schertel) and Lawrence "Larry" Albert Dolezal. She is of Czech and German descent.

According to a February 2015 article in The Easterner, Dolezal said she had suffered from cervical cancer in 2006, but had recovered by 2008, a claim which her brother said he had only heard about recently.
