Ex-wife Kim Basinger said Ron abused drugs and was a heavy gambler during their marriage. He accused her of hiding money and cheating with other men. The final divorce hearing was originally scheduled for a Jan. 30, 1990 court date, but Kim wanted her decree before the close of the decade and reached a last-minute settlement with Ron a few days before Christmas, 1989. A judge ordered them not to make the terms of the settlement public, but when Kim went bankrupt four years later, Ron's monthly alimony of $9,000 became public knowledge from her financial records.
