In 2010 Indiana couple Kristine and Michael Barnett adopted Natalia, a Ukrainian child born with dwarfism. The Barnetts believed Natalia was six-years-old at the time of her adoption, but later asserted she was lying about her age and abandoned her. The story of Natalia’s adoption has since been examined in an Investigation Discovery docuseries and now the Hulu drama “Good American Family” starring Ellen Pompeo and Mark Duplass.
What the Barnetts have said about Natalia Grace
In addition to accusing Natalia of lying about her age, the Barnetts have also claimed she has tried to kill them through various means, including by poisoning coffee and by knife. The pair had Natalia “re-aged” by a court (Natalia did not have her own legal representation during this process) from 8 to 22 and subsequently left her in an apartment and ceased communication with her completely.
The Barnetts also appeared to not take Natalia’s disabilities into consideration.

Good American Family presents a vivid retelling of a troubled adoption saga, its narrative steeped in real-life complexity and the weight of unspoken sorrows. It paints a picture of a family caught in a collision of memories and misinterpretations, where a young woman’s disputed identity and her guardians’ conflicting memories share space like fractured reflections.
Legal notices introduce each episode, serving as somber markers that remind the audience of the caution inherent in recounting events tainted by ambiguity. This structure invites viewers to linger in uncertainty, each scene slowly unraveling secrets without providing an absolute resolution.
Two opposing voices arise in the telling: one voice speaks through the adoptive parents, whose recollections brim with both tenderness and unspoken regret, while the other resonates with the enigmatic cadence of a daughter whose existence challenges the conventional script.

It’s clear we’re supposed to find Hulu’s true-crime miniseries Good American Family unsettling and upsetting. And we do — just not always for the reasons the show intends.
Good American Family, which dropped its first two episodes (of eight) on Wednesday and stars Grey’s Anatomy‘s Ellen Pompeo, dramatizes the real-life ordeal surrounding Natalia Grace, a young girl with dwarfism whose adoption by an American family in 2010 ultimately devolved into tragedy. That’s all I’ll say here about the outcome of the story, for those unfamiliar with the full Natalia Grace case, but her peculiar adoption journey...

When Natalia Grace was adopted from Ukraine into the Barnett family as a six-year-old child, no one could have foreseen that the situation would devolve into something that spurred court battles, criminal charges, and multiple documentaries and shows. How that happened is up for debate, with competing stories and narratives fighting for the right to be considered the truth.
This is what we do know: Michael and Kristine Barnett, a couple living in Indiana, adopted Natalia in 2010. They were told she was a six-year-old child who had been previously adopted and abandoned,...

When it comes to true crime dramas, I typically walk away feeling like I’ve wasted my time because they add too many perspectives and what-ifs to a sensitive situation.
The result is usually an over-stuffed affair that doesn’t do the story justice.
Thankfully, Good American Family zeroes in on parts of the Natalia Grace story that we haven’t heard much about, including Kristine Barnett’s perspective.
(Disney/Ser Baffo)
All we know about Kristine is how the media portrayed her, and, of course, The Curious Case of Natalia Grace, which didn’t show her in the best light or even include her side.
Ellen Pompeo did the bulk of the heavy lifting in the first two episodes, showcasing Kristine as this warm mother figure who slowly realizes something is amiss with the young girl she brought into her family on a whim.

The first two episodes of Hulu's ripped-from-the-headlines limited series Good American Family debuted on the streamer March 19 — and critics are divided.
The "mad and messy saga" is based on the story of Natalia Grace (played by newcomer Imogen Faith Reid), a Ukrainian-born orphan with a rare form of dwarfism who is adopted by a Midwestern family — only to be abandoned a year later when they start to suspect she may not be who she says she is. Golden Globe nominee Ellen Pompeo (Grey's Anatomy) executive produces and stars as Kristine Barnett, Natalia's adoptive mother, and Emmy winner Mark Duplass (The Morning Show) plays Michael Barnett, Kristine's optimistic husband. The project also features Christina Hendricks, Sarayu Blue, and Dulé Hill.
Told from multiple perspectives, Good American Family currently has a 40 percent at Rotten Tomatoes and a "generally favorable" MetaCritic score of 63 (based on eight reviews). Critics are split...

After nearly two decades and more than 400 episodes starring on Grey’s Anatomy, Ellen Pompeo exited the ABC medical drama as a series regular in 2023. She didn’t quite say goodbye, as her beloved onscreen doctor, Meredith Grey, has stayed on as the show’s narrator and in a recurring onscreen role. But the change was a needed one for Pompeo, who has said she was looking to try something new.

Fascinating, oftentimes maddening, and occasionally overdramatic, Good American Familyis thoroughly addictive television. Like its limited-series cousins, The Act, Adolescence, and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, the Hulu series presents a seemingly harmless child—or family—that are not who they appear to be. Or maybe they are. Either way, the tension builds to such a degree that you want to reach inside the screen and shake some of the characters you’re watching.

Good American Family is now streaming with the first two episodes on Hulu! The series is based on a the true story of Kristine (Ellen Pompeo) and Michael Barnett (Mark Duplass), who adopt Natalia Grace (Imogen Reid). She is a young girl with a rare form of dwarfism. When things start to get weird, as alleged by the Barnetts, they start to fear that perhaps she isn't a young girl, but an adult. There's some mature themes going on here. So what's the age rating, and how mindful do you need to be of it?
If you head over to the Hulu website, you'll find the age rating for the series. Good American Family is rated TV-ma. This means that a production could include scenes that aren't appropriate for kids and teens who are under the age of 17. So how serious is the maturity?

Like many scripted series drawn from acts of true crime, Hulu’s “Good American Family” opens each episode with a legal disclaimer. Unlike most disclaimers, however, the language evolves over the course of the eight-episode season. The first half of the limited run, we’re told, “includes certain events as alleged by Kristine and Michael Barnett” (Ellen Pompeo and Mark Duplass), the Indiana couple accused of child abandonment in 2019. Then, a new perspective interrupts the Barnetts’: Beginning with Episode 5, the dramatized allegations are instead made by their adopted daughter, Natalia Grace (Imogen Faith Reid), a Ukrainian American girl with dwarfism whose protracted conflict with the Barnetts drives the story. The Barnetts’ saga is already well known, with television personalities like Dr. Phil taking a vested interest in their case and Investigation Discovery producing a multiyear, three-season docuseries titled “The Curious Case of Natalia Grace.” With its bifurcated structure, “Good American Family...

While the ID Channel docuseries The Curious Case of Natalia Grace aired its final episode on Max back in January, Hulu's latest miniseries Good American Familymeans the infamous true story it's based on is far from over. The streaming service will continue to unravel the contentious case through this new dramatized retelling featuring Grey's Anatomy's Ellen Pompeo and Creep's Mark Duplass, as Kristine and Michael Barnett — Natalia's adoptive parents, who start to believe the orphan is actually much older than she claims to be.
Previously dubbed Orphan, the show will reexamine the captivating and real tale of Natalia Grace, a young Ukrainian girl with a rare form of dwarfism called spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita. The genetic disorder affects an individual's bone growth, resulting in short stature and skeletal abnormalities as well as vision and hearing impairments. For Natalia, the uncommon condition brings her age into question for the Barnett family.

Inspired by the Natalia Grace case, ‘Good American Family’ unpacks truth vs. fiction.
Adopting a child should be a joyous new beginning - but what happens when doubt creeps in, and the truth is no longer clear? “Good American Family” isn’t just another ripped-from-the-headlines drama - it’s a deep dive into the power of perspective, bias, and media sensationalism. Inspired by the real-life Natalia Grace case, this Hulu Original stars Ellen Pompeo and Mark Duplass as a Midwestern couple whose adoption of a young girl with dwarfism turns into a legal and tabloid-fueled nightmare. As suspicion grows around their daughter’s true identity, their once-stable family unravels in a battle that plays out in courtrooms and on TV screens nationwide. From a business standpoint, it’s rarely much of a mystery why this ripped-from-the-headlines true-crime miniseries or that one exists. The subjects are already household names. The topics at hand, typically scammers or serial killers, spark seemingly endless fascination. Make it polished enough, and it could go all the way to the Emmys. You can practically hear the studio exec arguing that not making this show would be leaving money and prestige on the table.
If the bottom-line calculus is clear, however, the creative impetus isn’t always. Just as often as not, what results from this impulse to lightly fictionalize a recent news story is an overly straightforward telling of the same facts we’ve been barraged with already. Maybe there’s a version of the Natalia Grace saga that could cast a new light on an already extensively covered case, or simply add enough panache to make it feel worth revisiting again.

True crime-inspired TV shows tend to fascinate and captivate audiences with their dramatic adaptations, and Hulu’s upcoming limited series looks to be no different. Inspired by the real-life story of Natalia Grace, Good American Family focuses on the disturbing story of a Midwestern couple who adopt a young girl with a rare form of dwarfism. Their lives are forever changed when they begin to suspect their new daughter is not a child at all.
Natalia’s story was first publicized in 2019 after her adoptive parents, former Indiana natives Michael and Kristine Barnett, who will be played by Ellen Pompeo (Grey’s Anatomy) and Mark Duplass (The Morning Show) in Good American Family, were charged with neglect, which they denied.
The dramatization is told from multiple perspectives and explores themes of bias, trauma, and conflicting narratives in its efforts to present the case from various viewpoints rather than adhere to one version of events.

Mark Duplass admits that when he got approached about starring in Hulu’s Natalia Grace drama “Good American Family,” he was “very skeptical.”
“Look, there’s a documentary, there’s a movie called ‘Orphan’ that has similar themes, it’s been in the press. Why do we need another ripped from the headlines story?” Duplass told Variety Thursday night at the show’s Los Angeles premiere (and FYC event) at the Directors Guild Theater.
But after Duplass sat down with showrunners Katie Robbins and Sarah Sutherland to hear their idea of telling multiple different perspectives to explore hidden biases, he found the “Rashomon” type-structure compelling. “That was really exciting for me because it hasn’t really been seen in the miniseries format.”

The eight-episode Hulu series tells the true story of married couple Kristine (Ellen Pompeo) and Michael Barnett (Duplass), as they adopt Natalia Grace (Imogen Faith Reid), a young girl from Ukraine with dwarfism.

After cementing herself in TV history as Dr. Meredith Grey, Ellen Pompeo is making a big pivot for her next project.
The actress — who has fronted Grey’s Anatomy since 2005, though she’s no longer a full-time castmember — is starring in Hulu’s Good American Family, based on the real-life story surrounding Natalia Grace. For those who haven’t consumed media around the real-life case, Natalia — a 7-year-old Ukrainian orphan with dwarfism — was adopted by American couple Kristine and Michael Barnett in 2010 and abandoned by them a year later when they began to believe she was an adult who was conning them.
Pompeo, who also serves as an executive producer, plays Kristine, and told The Hollywood Reporter at the show‘s premiere on Thursday that after 20 years as Meredith Grey, “I definitely wanted to do something that was completely different from what I’ve been doing for a long time and this came along.

The story behind Natalia Grace may finally be closed on the ID Channel docuseries The Curious Case of Natalia Grace that came to an end last month, but the saga continues thanks to Hulu and their new dramatization of events in Good American Family. The eight-part miniseries stars Grey's Anatomy's Ellen Pompeo and Creep's Mark Duplass as Kristine and Michael Barnett, the parents who adopted Grace from Ukraine in 2010.
A new trailer for the series (seen below) showcases what's to come from the Hulu original, which bares a striking resemblance to 2009's Orphan, which, contrary to popular belief, was not based on Grace's story. "I've always considered myself blessed. I've known I was put on this Earth to build a world where all kids can feel safe," Pompeo says as the trailer begins. From there we see Imogen Faith Reid in her acting debut as Grace. "Are you...

Ellen Pompeo’s familiar voiceover launches a new story with the anticipated trailer arrival for Good American Family.
“I’ve always considered myself blessed. I’ve known I was put on this Earth to build a world where all kids can feel safe,” she says in the first look at her Hulu series that releases on March 19 (below).
As the trailer continues, however, things are not how they seem.
Good American Family is a dramatization of the real-life story of Natalia Grace. Grace, who has a rare form of dwarfism known as spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita, has had her story told across three seasons of the ID docuseries The Curious Case of Natalia Grace, which concluded in January.
Now comes Good American Family, which focuses on an earlier family who adopted Grace, the Barnett family, who are played by Pompeo (also an executive producer) and Mark Duplass. Natalia Grace is played by Imogen Faith Reid.

The case of Natalia Grace literally sent chills down everyone’s spine with its suspense and mystery. Not only that but after a while several new elements about her came to light that only added to the unsettling events surrounding her life. In 2010, she was adopted by an American couple named Kristine and Michael Barnett and came to the United States. While everything was going well, soon the couple started noticing bizarre and unsettling things about her, causing them to abandon her two years later in 2012. The couple claimed that Natalia Grace was actually a legal adult and successfully managed to change her birth year from 2003 to 1989.

Investigation Discovery will finish The Curious Case of Natalia Grace‘s trilogy in January with a “long-awaited conclusion” titled The Final Chapter.
The Curious Case of Natalia Grace: The Final Chapter will pick up just after the bombshell finale of Natalia Speaks, released in January 2024, when audiences learned that Natalia’s allegedly happy conclusion with her new family — Bishop Antwon Mans and his wife Cynthia — was all a lie. The episode ended with a phone call from Antwon alleging that “something ain’t right with Natalia” and that “this girl is tweakin’. I feel like she’s the enemy of the house. And she said to us we have held her hostage.”
“Our series was already finished and locked, but we instantly mobilized with our producers to ensure that this shocking development was included in our finale,” ID president Jason Sarlanis told The Hollywood Reporter at the time.

If the plot of Investigation Discovery’s new docuseries The Curious Case of Natalia Grace sounds familiar, there’s a good reason. Natalia Grace’s case echoes the plot of the 2009 horror thriller, Orphan, starring Isabelle Fuhrman, Vera Farmiga, and Peter Sarsgaard. It’s believed that the true events at the heart of The Curious Case of the Natalia Grace were inspired by the film, which was inspired by a similar case involving Barbora Skrlová.
“This year, we’ve witnessed resounding success with our phenomenal lineup of documentary events and The Curious Case of Natalia Grace is our next, must-watch television limited series,” stated Jason Sarlanis, President, Turner Networks, ID & Hln, Linear & Streaming. “Following the stranger-than-fiction journey of Natalia and her family through a lens that hasn’t been seen before, this gripping content is a great addition to our catalog of blockbuster titles that make ID the ultimate destination for true crime.
