- The festival takes place since 2002. It is the successor to the Miami Hispanic Film Festival.
- In June 2001, the French-Hispanic Film Festival, an annual event organized by the French Consulate in Miami, merged with the Miami Hispanic Film Festival. Subsequently, the organization changed its name to Miami Latin Film Festival and widened its scope to include French, Italian, and Portuguese movies in its repertoire in addition to the Latin American and Spanish films it had previously focused on.
