Overrated movie that lacks it all. The story is ridiculous : some kind of monster man running around killing people trying to get revenge for a hooker he barely knew, in fact he makes it clear to the audience he was surprised that he ended up in bed with her at all... So what is the motive for this entire flick ? Beats me.
The lightning is way to dark - I suppose they try to resemble cartoon-alike surroundings. They try to hard - the movie is so gray and dark that it all becomes way too much - one grayish soup of buildings, raindrops and black back alleys.
The voices are good as long as the characters talk themselves, but the problem is that that the movie mostly uses the narrator technique : The main person elaborates his situation at all times with a hilariously deep voice (trying to be tough, e' ?) and reels of loads of bullshit that has no relevance to the story whatsoever.
And I'm usually easy to please with regard to "odd" movies. Save yourself from disaster - get another DVD to avoid spoiling the evening.

This movie is excellent. However, it took some 20 minutes for the characters to settle. Emily (Peet) stumbles upon Oliver (Kutcher) on the airport, and from there on their relationship develops, both for good and bad, over the next six years.
Scenery and camera angles are great, and there are many memorable quotes and scenes. While being a romantic/drama movie - it has lot's of funny moments too. I laughed out loud several times when I watched it by myself. It brings out the contrasts which anyone who has been in love sure will recognize.
While Kutcher seems a little nervous and uncertain of himself (especially in the start), Peet plays Emily in a brilliant way. You can really feel how the Emily character develops during the movie. Her disappointment when the couple reaches their downs is easily read in her eyes. Several times I just wanted to jump into the movie and tell Oliver and Emily what to do. That is a good thing - since it means the movie doesn't follow the usual drama/romance plot.
I want say anything about the ending to ruin the surprise for you. But prepare to drop a tear or four no matter what you are expecting.. :) I give it a 8 out of 10.
