“It was said that women would not be recognized”: Crunchyroll VP’s Difficult Past Could Open the Doors of Better Female Representation in the Anime Industry
Image
“It was said that women would not be recognized unless they worked two or three times as hard as men.” That’s not some soap opera line, it’s the real deal from Crunchyroll’s boss lady in charge of the anime production division, Emiko Iijima. And let’s be honest: if you’ve been paying even the slightest bit of attention to how the anime community works, this doesn’t sound shocking.

It’s more of a sad truth that fans and creators have been quietly well aware of for ages. So, Iijima just got listed again as one of the most influential women in international television by The Hollywood Reporter, which is pretty cool! However, she is not only producing hits like Solo Leveling and Bye Bye Earth, she’s also revealing how hard it’s been for women in anime, both behind the scenes and in front of the camera.

Mappa Launches ‘mappa records’ Music Label To Expand Anime Soundtracks & Live Events
Chainsaw Man (2022)

Shin'ichirô Watanabe
Lazarus Review:  Shinichirō Watanabe’s New Cyberpunk Anime Is Style Over Substance, But That’s Ok
Shin'ichirô Watanabe
Shinichirō Watanabe’s “Cowboy Bebop” was a lightning-in-a-bottle phenomenon. It is an artistic high that we keep chasing despite being painfully aware that it cannot be replicated — and arguably, it shouldn’t be. Everything else that Watanabe has lovingly crafted since then — “Samurai Champloo,” “Space Dandy,” “Carole & Tuesday” — contains slivers of this inimitable brilliance, encased with the passionate dedication of a seasoned auteur.

His latest, “Lazarus,” embraces the signature impulses of his ouevre: a deep love for a rich, diverse futuristic setting, a rag-tag group of misfits embarking on thrilling adventures, and an uncompromising vision concerning humanity. Although critics have only been privy to 5 of the 13 episodes that “Lazarus” has to offer, they paint a groovy, highly-stylized picture of a world on the brink of extinction. There’s a frenetic “Bebop”-esque sensibility that feels so familiar, yet “Lazarus” etches its own identity and stands on its distinct merits.

Mappa Studios’ journey within the anime industry has been a perfect one, as it has produced some great masterpieces. Founded in 2011, the Japanese animation studio has become one of the biggest names all over the world with projects like Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, Hell’s Paradise, Kakeguri, The God of Highschool, etc.

“I wanted to make it feel down to earth”: Kaori Makita’s Biggest Change in ‘Hell’s Paradise’ Made the Characters More Human
Image
The dark fantasy genre of the anime world has become quite popular in recent times, and one of the main reasons behind it is Yuji Kaku’s Hell’s Paradise. With only one season under its belt, the anime series has achieved such reputation and recognition that it has been added to the anime industry’s “Dark Trio” group, which is absolutely remarkable.

One of the reasons behind Hell’s Paradise‘s inevitable success was the plethora of characters and their battles within the series that added more thrill to the story. These battles were a little different than the manga’s narrative, as it made the characters look more human. Kaori Makita, the director of the anime series, once revealed the reason behind making this change.

10 Times I Was Shocked By How Good A Movie Was Even Though I Had Low Expectations
Image
As an ardent moviegoer, I love watching a movie with absolutely no prior knowledge about it. Sometimes, I'll even skip watching the trailer, so I can go into it completely blind. Experiencing a movie with no preconceived notions makes most films a surprise. However, sometimes you inevitably find out more about a movie beforehand, be it through trailers you watch in a movie theater or by word of mouth. Often they're negative things, but movies that exceed viewers' expectations aren't all that rare.

For example, after the disappointing Black Widow, and with the Infinity Saga over, I had no hopes for a good MCU film again, but I loved Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, one of the best movies of Marvel's Phase 4. Even when expectations aren't stunningly low, people can still be surprised, which is how Yuri! On Ice became one of the anime of the past decade that surpassed expectations,...

Why Did Yuri!! On Ice Become So Popular? The Secret Is All In Its Main Characters
Image
Yuri!!! On Ice focuses on Yuri Katsuki's personal development without a traditional antagonist, instead focusing the inward struggles of an athlete and performer. The animation set a new standard for quality, featuring real-life ice skating choreographies that put Studio Mappa on the map years before Jujutsu Kaisen. The prominent same-sex relationship between Yuri and Viktor helped normalize queer representation in anime.

Sports anime have always been popular, but Yuri!!! on Ice is a special case. The series, which was a Studio Mappa original written and directed by Sayo Yamamoto, marked a distinct change in the anime industry. It is a combination of a warming story of personal development, a blooming romance, sportsmanship, and remarkable animation on top of that.

The recent official announcement of Ice Adolescences cancelation, a feature film that would serve as a continuation of the story, became a major internet and pop culture phenomenon.

The Best Anime Under 100 Episodes
Image
Getting to the end of an anime can be a struggle. Often, this isn't due to the show's quality, but because of the immense length of many big-name series. The most extreme example is One Piece, which has over 1100 episodes and counting, meaning it would take nearly 20 days of non-stop watching to catch up. And One Piece is far from an outlier; many beloved anime classics have episode counts into the hundreds, with shows like Naruto, Bleach, and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure requiring days of intense binge-watching to finish.

Because of this, jumping into a new series can often feel intimidating, especially if the viewer doesn't have much free time. Thankfully, many excellent anime series tell a complete story in under 100 episodes. These shows cover all genres, from light-hearted comedies to intense action shows, meaning there is a short anime for every taste and timescale.

Yuri On Ice: Ice Adolescence's Cancelation is More Impactful Than It Seems
Image
Quick Links Yuri On Ice Brought Sports Anime To A New Level A Break From Immature Characters The Romance Brings the Bl Genre Out From the Side Lines What the Anime Industry Will Be Missing Out On

The news of Yuri On Ice: Ice Adolescence's cancelation has blown up the anime LGBT+ community. The film was announced to be produced back in 2017, only a year after the anime was released. Delays were announced in 2019 and no further news was shared until April of this year, 2024, when the project was officially canceled. The figure skating-centered series became popular primarily through anime fans of boy's love series, or Bl for short. It's been an anime prominently featured during Pride Month, but many overlook that this anime wasn't just about the LGBT+ community.

After Yuri On Ice was released in 2016, Mappa admitted that the 12-episode series didn't earn the animation studio much money.

Mappa Confirms ‘Yuri!!! on Ice the Movie: Ice Adolescence’ Is Canceled!
Image
Remember Yuri!!! on Ice? The ice-skating anime series was a big hit back in 2016, as it was praised for its aesthetical approach, character development, the depiction of ice skating (which was praised even by professionals!), anxiety, as well as homosexuality. And while the original anime series had only 12 episodes and one Ova, it is still dearly remembered by many fans as one of Mappa’s boldest outings. The series was streamed internationally by Crunchyroll, which enabled it to become globally popular.

The series was created by Sayo Yamamoto and Mitsurō Kubo, who co-wrote the series with Yamamoto serving as co-director as well. If you remember, back in April 2017, an anime movie sequel was announced at the Yuri!!! on Stage exhibition event, but it is 2024 and the movie has not premiered yet. Recently, Mappa issued a statement confirming the sad news that the planned Yuri!!! on Ice the Movie: Ice Adolescence has been officially canceled!

Yuri!!! on Ice's Victor Gets a Big Kiss From Olympic Skater Johnny Weir
Image
Yuri!!! on Ice fans will finally get the uncensored kiss they have demanded -- but not in the way they may think.

Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir posted a video of his visit to an ice rink in Niigata, Japan, where some familiar faces welcomed him. Three cardboard cut-outs of Yuri!!! on Ice's Yuri Katsuki, Victor Nikiforov, and Yuri Plisetsky surrounded the ice rink, Yuri K. in his "Eros" costume, Yuri P. in "Agape," and Victor in "Stammi Vicino." Weir playfully greeted Yuri P. and Yuri K. before joyfully greeting Victor with an enormous kiss on the lips.

Otaku Once Sent 'Human Bones' to a Broadcaster to Protest Air Times
Image
One intensely passionate fan took the news of their favorite anime changing their broadcast times really, really hard.

For the most part, the broadcasting times for anime episodes rarely change, making it one of the reliable things fans could count on to ensure they could record episodes of their favorite anime. The few times there are changes are because some other event is happening that takes precedence, like sporting events. According to Cola (@melonc0la), in 2006, that event turned out to be a table tennis match of the World Table Tennis Championships and one Inukami! fan became so enraged about the change in broadcast time of Episode 4, "Unwillingly Wearing an Apron!" they sent a parcel to TV Tokyo that included not only a handwritten letter of protest but a bag of, what appeared to be real human bones.

Yuri!!! on Ice Song Features in K-Pop Group Stray Kids' Show, Skz
Image
A Stray Kids video editor must be a Yuri!!! on Ice fan.

An episode of K-Pop band Stray Kids' solo variety show, which premiered four years ago, recently came to the attention of the hungry-for-content Yuri!!! on Ice fandom. In Episode 7 of "Finding Skz," the Stray Kids members try to guess Seungmin's most memorable prank. The guesses range from scaring people to flushing the toilet when another member was showering since, as Felix bemoaned, the vocalist pulls a lot of pranks. In the end, Han answered correctly when he guessed Seungmin's most memorable prank was when he fed him ice cream while he was sleeping. At that moment, the silly, kooky Ost "Warming Up!" from Yuri!!! on Ice begins playing to celebrate Han's win.

How The Director Of Cowboy Bebop Inspired Others To Change The Anime Industry
Image
The one anime series that I'm most excited about this spring is "Skip and Loafer." The source manga tells the tale of Mitsumi Iwakura, an ambitious teenage girl from the country who moves to Tokyo for high school. There she meets the easygoing Sosuke Shima, and the two of them slowly build a close-knit network of friends that includes local mean girl Mika Egashira, bookish Makoto Kurame, and independent-minded Yuzuki Murashige. Each of them is as different as can be, and yet despite bad early impressions, they find a common cause in each other. "Skip and Loafer" is too good-natured to be a "realistic" high school story. But it is successful at evoking the texture of adolescence in its banality, complexity, and sweetness.

"Skip and Loafer" is also the first anime in years to be directed and scripted by the great Kotomi Deai, who has now been active in the...

Chainsaw Man Trailer: The Devil Hunters Are Finally Coming In Gory Anime Glory
Image
Sharpen your teeth, because the highly-anticipated anime adaptation of "Chainsaw Man," Tatsuki Fujimoto's award-winning and extremely popular manga series of the same name is arriving on Crunchyroll next month. Originally serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump, the "Chainsaw Man" anime is directed by Ryū Nakayama, and tells a bleak and nihilistic story about Denji, a teenage boy living with Pochita, a painfully adorable dog err ... chainsaw devil as the two harvest devil corpses to repay the debt of his father. After Denji is betrayed and killed he makes a contract with Pochita to be revived as a "Chainsaw Man," which gives him the ability to spawn chainsaws out of his body, including a horrifying metal head with a chainsaw on top and sharp teeth to help him gnash demons.

The premise sounds like something out of a Clive Barker novel, but would you believe that "Chainsaw Man" is...

Yuri!!! on Ice: 10 Most Romantic Victor/Yuri Moments From The Anime
Yuri!!! On Ice (2016)
While the incredible visuals of Yuri!!! on Ice dazzle and entertain viewers, the emotion and personality injected into each routine raises the ante considerably; rather than just beautifully animated and choreographed skating programs, the action on the ice serves as a metaphoric expression of the skaters' psyche, their relationships, and their development as characters.

The human drama that drives the anime is compelling, and the connection between Yuri Katsuki and Victor Nikiforov serves as the show's emotional center. Initially, Yuri is reserved and starstruck in Victor's presence—the latter has been the former's skating north star. As they come to know one another personally, their growing intimacy not only lights their own competitive drives but also pushes the entire skating community forward.

Yuri on Ice!!!: 5 Ways Victor is the Best Skater (& 5 It's Yuri Plisetsky)
Yuri!!! On Ice (2016)
Throughout the entirety of Yuri!!! on Ice, the main cast of skaters competes not only with the intention of defeating one another but also with the goal of surpassing skating legend Victor Nikiforov. As the reigning world champion, Victor's absence from the season as a competitor is felt in a multitude of ways: a dominating shadow, a vacuum of power, and an insult to his self-proclaimed rivals.

Although the impressive career Victor has built seems untouchable, Yuri "Yurio" Plisetsky aggressively bucks the formal reverence and begins his career on a historic note that even Victor himself never achieved. Victor's place at the top of the skating pantheon is never doubted, but Yurio certainly shows the sort of genius capabilities that suggest he is the next big thing.

Yuri on Ice!!!: 10 Questions Fans Still Need Answers To
Yuri!!! On Ice (2016)
Originally airing in 2016, it's been a long five years for fans of Yuri!!! on Ice. The season finale's end card even seemed to hint that the "next level" would be right around the corner, that the veritable question marks and interrobangs that sprung up over the heads of viewers would be addressed soon.

Yuri On Ice!!!: 5 Best Figure Skating Routines (& 5 Worst)
Yuri!!! On Ice (2016)
In conjunction with its narrative and character development, the beautifully choreographed and animated skating routines in Yuri!!! on Ice propelled the anime into the stratosphere of fan and critically acclaimed anime. The show's animation garnered enough praise and adulation to win big at Crunchyroll's inaugural anime award show (earning gold medals in fields such as Anime of the Year and Best Animation).

While the show is full of breathtaking skating sequences, the anime doesn't shy away from depicting crushing missteps and error-riddled performances. The contrast between show-stopping jumps and heart-breaking falls creates a powerful, emotional tension that elicits both triumphant cheers and tears of defeat.

Yuri On Ice!!!: 10 Saddest Things About Victor
Yuri!!! On Ice (2016)
A major draw to Yuri!!! on Ice is its ability to dance with many themes—love, maturation, expression, and sadness, and more. On and off the ice; the cast of skaters push themselves personally and professionally as their struggles are metaphorically expressed through their routines. While these internal and external competitions take place, one figure casts a dominating shadow over the sport of men's figure skating: Victor Nikiforov.
