Scarlett Johansson's divisive and mind-bending sci-fi movie, Lucy, is a Netflix hit 10 years later. Written and directed by Luc Beeson, the 2014 sci-fi film follows a woman who, after a powerful drug is accidentally absorbed into her bloodstream, gains superhuman abilities, including telekinesis and telepathy, and seeks revenge against her former captors. Other than Johansson in the lead role, the cast also includes Morgan Freeman, Choi Min-sik, Amr Waked, Julian Rhind-Tutt, Pilou Asbk, and Lio Tipton.

Now, a decade after its initial release in 2014, Johansson's divisive and mind-bending sci-fi film is a Netflix hit. Lucy ranked eighth on Netflix's Global Top 10 chart for the week of August 19-25 with 4.4 million views and 6.5 million hours viewed. In the second half of the chart, Lucy is sandwiched between Tkunb and The Emoji Movie above it, and Night School and Kingsman: The Golden Circle below it.

Seasoned French-Swiss media executive Axel Duroux has been appointed CEO of EuropaCorp, the company announced over the weekend.

The appointment comes just two weeks after the company – created by Besson in 1999 – completed a restructuring operation aimed at getting it back on its feet after a near two-year production hiatus as it tried to rein in runaway debts.

Besson found a saviour last February in the shape of New York-based asset management company Vine Alternative Investments which agreed to bail out EuropaCorp in return for a majority stake in the company.

Could Valerian 2 actually happen? Admittedly, it still seems unlikely, but a new deal that Netflix has brewing makes it at least seem much more possible now. According to a new report, the streaming service is in negotiations with director Luc Besson and his company EuropaCorp to make new movies for Netflix. These would be branded as Netflix originals and are said to be projects in the $30 million budget range. There are a lot of moving pieces involved in this potential deal, but this is the best chance at seeing a sequel to Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, which bombed at the box office.

We've heard word about Lucy 2 before, but thanks to Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, EuropaCorp and Luc Besson are prepping to get the sequel made.

After the surprising success of Lucy, the 2014 action-thriller, Lucy 2 was inevitable. Although we haven't heard much about it for quite some time. During a EuropaCorp shareholders meeting in Paris, EuropaCorp CEO Marc Shmuger confirmed that original Lucy movie writer-director Luc Besson has already completed the script for this action sequel, although no production schedule is in place yet. While no specific story details were revealed, it seems that Luc Besson is eyeing another female-driven project to direct before he tackles Lucy 2.

The original Lucy followed Scarlett Johansson as the title character. The ramifications of the financial failure of Valerian over the summer are being felt at EuropaCorp. The European production company has overseen a slate of films that haven’t struck gold at the box office in the past year, also including Miss Sloane, The Circle and Nine Lives. As a consequence of these assorted box office disappointments, there’s nine figures of red ink to be mopped up.

TNT made a major play in acquiring Artificial Intelligence, a new show that will revolve around an “escaped” AI, and the efforts to monitor, stop, prevent, understand whatever it may be trying to do. The show is written by Luc Besson (who may direct the pilot) and Bill Wheeler, and marks a new step in TNT’s growing effort to include… “out of the ordinary” programming.

With Lucy 2 and the massive-budget Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets already on his plate, this shift in gears may make for one of television’s most interesting new shows. Considering the rather open description, which could lead us through a unique vision of what it means to live with an AI “out there,” there’s no telling exactly where this show could take audiences.

Say what you will about Luc Besson, but the director has a pretty stellar track record for creating badass female action heroes. And though Lucy had a huge number of problems, the pic still gave Scarlett Johansson a chance to power her own summer actioner, and the actress really delivered. Recently, it was revealed that Besson’s company EuropaCorp was proceeding with development of a Lucy follow-up, but a recent piece from Screen Daily posits that Lucy 2 isn’t just in the works – its script is already complete.

Speaking with select outlets during Comic-Con, the French director was vague about details for the sequel, which has its work cut out for it given the incredibly definitive ending of the first film. He did apparently insinuate that the story has been hashed out and the script is complete, but no word yet on when a team will come together to make the pic.
